Hot damn, that's an insane price for a backlit, branded keyboard with genuine Cherry switches!

  • Has anyone used it. Is it good for day to day use involving alot of typing?

    • +37

No numeric keypad is a killer for me. Otherwise I'd be on my way to MSY now.

      • Same here - after struggling with crappy keyboards at work I've been looking into mech. keyboards.
If this had a numpad I would be all over it.

        • +3

I had this conundrum, ended up with a Ten-Keyless Filco Majestouch 2 (MX Browns) and bought a standalone membrane numpad.

        • +3

I bought my own mechanical keyboard for work. Was a bloody good investment along with a wireless trackball.

      • Grab a separate mechanical keypad

    • +2

Blue or brown switches seem to be better suited to typing a lot.

      • +1

I find Blues too loud for an office environment though. I'm currently typing this on a cherry red actually.

Cherry reds have the same actuation force as Blue but not click, which is similar to the Browns. So best of both worlds really.

        • My co-workers best get used to the click-clack. Either way, I've had no complaints.

This is an insane deal BTW, but i've got enough mechs.

        • @Jorkus: TBH, membranes also have the click-clack sound (at least thats what I've noticed) so it's not much different. It's just Blues are slightly louder than the membranes and reds.

        • @ProjectZero: Yeah, plus i find that bottoming out the keys is way louder than any switch anyway.

        • @Jorkus:

Yep - most people mash their keyboard pretty hard, so they are usually louder than a mech. keyboard anyway

Don't get started on ladies with nails…..

        • Typing this on the keyboard in question. The issue with reds is that they have no actuation feedback until you bottom out in the keystroke. I prefer the brown and blue switches. That said, it's still a good keyboard.

        • +1

@Jorkus: I would have murdered you if you were in my office. I cant stand people who type loud on membrane keyboards let alone a mechanical! =P

I bought it during the Christmas sale have had if for a few months. First mech keyboard, quality is great for 59$ had dedicated vol and back-light which is a nice touch and overall build is very solid. Numeric keypad can be docked on but is it not sold separately but is sold as the thunder k7. typing is not the best but it is fluid and feels nice once you get used to it. It has a matte coating on the key which can attract oil very easily as well.

    • I have this exact model and I really like the red switches for typing. Don't miss the numpad at all but it depends on if you're a frequent numpad user or not.

    • Brought it during Christmas. I'd prefer brown/blue for typing, but its a solid improvement over a Membrane

    • +1

Basically having no numpad makes it unsuitable for data entry and the cherry reds aren't great for typing either as there is no tactile feel.

Essentially this keyboard is geared mostly at the gaming market where no tenkey is great for saving space + better ergonomics and the cherry red switches are easier to double tap for gaming.

Personally I still don't like cherry reds even as a gamer because you still do type a bit so the keys will end up feeling all mushy when you do.

    • +1

I can't seem to get used to the Cherry MX red switches (as used in this model). My accuracy significantly dropped vs a membrane keyboard, due to the 2mm actuation point and no tactile click, resulting in many wrong keys pressed. Switched to MX Blue and my typing significantly improved. Just my experience, I'm a relatively inaccurate typer.

  • Is it possible to buy a numpad extension for these? Not knowing a thing about them, it looks like there's a slot off to the right there, or is that just the style of the keyboard?

  • I have one, not bad for typing, although I prefer Black\Brown over the Red. Seems to detect when I don't completely depress the keys. But very silent is a massive +ve in an office environment. No Num Pad was a big kicker too.

    • I was thinking about getting this for my office but no numpad is a bit killer for work :(

      • Lol use it as a reason to get one the mice with num pad on side.

  • +2

My biggest issue with keyboards is not mechanical versus membrane, but the printed letters rubbing off.

    • +1

If that is an issue for you, you may be pleased to know that mech kb can have their keys changed quite easily whilst membrane requires you to change the whole thing or at least write it back on yourself.

      • +1

If that is an issue for you, you may be pleased to know that mech kb can have their keys changed quite easily…

It's nice to have the option to replace keys but - as usual with these things - the only problem is a high price.

You can buy several regular keyboards for the price of key replacements for one of these keyboards. It amazes me that with today's technology they can't make the key lettering last forever. Or rather they probably don't want that. Keyboards themselves are reliable enough today that we don't need to be buying new ones all our lives.

Far more durable lettering is needed.

        • Das make a keyboard that the lettering will never rub off - http://shop.daskeyboard.com/collections/products/products/re…

        • I've used two mech KB so far, one for work and one at home. The letters haven't worn off yet and I've had the one at home for 2 to 3 years now (though I haven't used it much for the past year and a half because I mostly just game at home) and the work one for about a year and half.

A lot of ppl that do touch typing, have blank keycaps with no writing at all :)

    • Mechanical Keyboards have a custom community, you can replace every aspect of them.
Keycaps can be found are here

      • Or if you want somewhere local, at MechKB (which is in Australia and is cheaper, though, not too sure about the quality).
I should've bought keycaps when they were on special. The rep does post on Ozbargain sometimes.

      Somebody needs Mavis Beacon…

    • I used to have that problem until I switched to backlit keyboards. On all the ones I've owned so far, the letter is not actually printed onto the key, but is actually a cut out where the light shines through, and will therefore never rub off.

  • Nice! Yeah, very unforunate that it does not have a number pad

  • Why they don't make wireless mechanical keyboards? Because of potential lag?

  • +2

For those looking for a mechanical keyboard for work/work processing, look elsewhere, TKL keyboards are generally suited towards gaming.

    • I can understand that a work keyboard can't be used for gaming (programmable buttons, multipress), but how come a gaming keyboard can't be used for work?

      • I think he meant that without the numpad, work related tasks may be a hindrance.

      • 'Gaming' keyboards can definitely be used for work but there are a lot of people commenting on this deal complaining about the lack of keypad, or asking if an optional numpad is available, when this keyboard is clearly marketed towards gamers.

        • +1

oh. the way you worded it i thought it was something inherant about the keyboard and not the numpad. thanks :)

    • As somebody who get shoulder pain and RSI from normal size keyboard I beg to differ.

  • Good price for a tenkeyless, cherry based board.

  • Not going to have time to go in store to MSY. How's their delivery service??

    • Postage is $10

Anyone want to pick one up for me at $59 and i'll pickup from them (so long as you are in Melb and not living too far away from 3189)

      • Try Click and Collect. Buy now and collect later?

        • Looking at store times, i cant get to them during the weekdays at all…..only saturdays.

          they have click n collect??

edit: cant find an option to pickup the item…..

        • @mhs m0nk3y: http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/content/1-delivery. Look at Pickup. But you have 48hrs to pickup, I guess you can't make it on weekdays regardless

how's this one comparing with kogan's one ?
    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-backlit-tenkeyless-mechan…

    • +1

Kogan's one is a bit unpolished and buggy.

  • You got me at "mechanical".

  • +1

If someone was working next to me using one of these, I would be inclined to place it somewhere not anatomically possible.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdV7xGOzGv4

    • click click clickedy click! ….

  • Typing this on the same keyboard. Has been this price a few times before.

If you are in the market for a tenkeyless, and you like the feel of Cherry Reds, I wouldn't hesitate.

  • Pretty good for 59$! :D

    • Just wish they would deliver to Darwin.

  • Aaand there's one just put up on eBay for $80 min (auction) + $15 postage.

  • Picked one up, been wanting a cheap entry to mechanical to see if I like it… Thanks!

    • Please let us know your experience

I can't wait to buy one for my programmer boyfriend.Thank you for your post.

    • +1

I find it not that great for programming/typting. its more suited for playing games though. Keys are very easily pressed making more typos.

      • I barely understand Mechnical Keyboard. Can you recommend some Mechnical Keyboard suitable for programming? Thank you for your help.

        • It's a personal preference thing but the keys in this one is pressed very easily. What you want that is more suitable for typing are keys using the" cherry brown switches".

        • @supnigs: Sorry, I don't know what does cherry brown switches mean. Can you explain it for me?

        • @Normadx:

They are a specific brand of switches used in the keys. Colours mean different things. Reds are for gaming and are soft to press and register fast. The Browns have a slight tactile feedback and is soft to press too. However it's the tactile feedback that makes typing a joy for long hours.

Kogan sell a cherry brown backlit for $79.

        • @Normadx: If you're not sure which of the keys you like the feel of, you can get a cherry mx sampler

          https://mechkb.com/cherry-mx-sampler-6switches

They have all possible cherry keys for you to test.

        • @supnigs: They're usually about that price in stores too… so you could save some money if you find one close to you.

  • Got one with numeric pad for 79 @centrecom 3years ago. Was so lucky. I never find a similar deal anymore. 59without a numeric pad is still a good deal.

  • Thanks OP grabbed one.

  • I have one of these, awesome keyboard!

Still preparing the invoice? Did I do something wrong?

  • do msy have this deal every couple of months or so? I see ive missed out on this one

    • +1

They do seem to have deals for mechanical keyboards every so often. Last time i missed out on the cm quickfire one for $79 and i have been beating myself over not being able to get it ever since. I jumped at this deal when i saw it. But yes they do seem to bring out a deal every so often (varying the model and price). All the best in your patient hunt :)

  • Plus from me, I'm waiting to buy this for someone as a bday prezzie, I'm looking for a kb with a numeric kb, so I'm guessing blue or brown keys, when it comes out.

  • Mini Review: I much prefer the cherry reds in this to the cherry blues and browns in my last two keyboards, the reds feel epic, even for typing, never going back to blue or brown.
