I'm at work and was able to connect via our HTTP proxy. (i used a VM so i didn't need to install the client on my work machine)

myself and a few others have confirmed this works.
1. download "Download distro AN VPN tool" and install
2. run program and click "openVPN" to install openVPN (set proxies if required)
3. select a UK server
4. press connect.

  1. remove proxies from your IE if you have them.
  2. go on over to steam and buy L4D2 just make sure it doesn't say anything about the "low violence" change your address to Great Brittan and pay.

                I just went and checked my receipt, didn't need to gift it, I just purchased it by loging in with my current steam credentials to the UK steam site. I did not need to use any overseas IP address - i did it on my dynamic internode one.

                I recall changing my country code somewhere to UK, and I noticed I used my credit card when normally I use paypal. sorry can't remember the details.

                using the paypal converter it says thats just about 75 bux or close to 19 bux per copy
                (pauyal adds 2% for conversion.)

                i'm not going to guarantee a uncensored version but i am buying from the UK country code and in UK pounds.

                OK i got three people already just hope no one backs out.

                You have to pay by credit card and you leave all your address details the same except you change the country to the UK. This is how you do it but some cards work while others are rejected.

          I'm in. But I've heard that if you try and play multi with anything other than the local version on Steam, you'll be patched to the local. If so, it may be pointless getting international versions.

            @m00npatrol: I have the UK (uncensored) version (but I live in Australia), and have played it multiplayer with other Australians. It did not get patched to local version. However, I have heard that if you play with people that have the censored version, then one of the censored 'uncommon commons', being the SWAT-looking guy, will not appear. The rest of it will still be full-gore for you though (but your poor censored friends won't see the same gore you do).

              @salem: I'm pretty sure the censored versions ended up having the 'uncommon common'. At first they were gonna cut them out but according to my friend who has the censored version, the riot police etc are in the censored version. Just the gore and disappearing bodies.

      Me and a mate managed to get 2 uncensored copies through from CDWOW. But shipping took more than 2 months and we thought they were lost in the post so CDWOW refunded us and we bought from UK steam site.

      the 2 copies arrived a couple of weeks later. my mate still has 'em… we don't have a use for them and hadn't been bothered selling them.

    "Low Violence Version" says Steam. It's censored. I think the zombies disappear before they even hit the floor.

    Don't support this cut of the game, other games have fought with the censors and released uncut versions, L4D2 was not one of them.

          Get over yourself. I have the low violence version and it's almost exactly the same. The gameplay is UNAFFECTED. And it's definitely not worth a negative vote, even if it seems important to you.

            cause there is less blood over the screens
            and monsters disappear instanly when they die
            which tells u faster when they are dead so u can focus on anotehr monster

            just depends
            after playing a few hours
            seeing all that blood and being able to chop arms off loses its appeal

            less laggy too!

          I agree with Zeromus. It's a shame there is no "warning" rating to alert people to possible gotchyas.

              but i do kinda agree that forcing a censored version is lame, i guess if they have a massive reduction in sales (specially if people are buying the UK version increasing there sales) it makes them want to try harder in future to lobby the government to allow R18+ games.

    Just get the US version gifted to your account from an IP in the US. This will allow you to play the uncensored in Australia.

    I barely play this game anymore anyway, too many issues.

      I've clocked over 120 hours in L4D1 but only 7 hours in L4D2 and I got it a couple months ago. I personally prefer the first game. The characters are more likable and I like the levels for their simplicity. The L4D2 levels are like a maze and the overall feel and atmosphere has become too comical…and god I can't stand Ellis..
      Sometimes more isn't necessarily better. Too bad the L4D1 community is pretty much dead..

    which aint as many

    Just in case people are wondering - from the comments in here and other places, you'd think the two versions were drastically different, and that in the censored version the guns shoot flowers and the zombies spout rainbows. I have the censored version that I haven't bothered to crack, and I've played the uncensored version on a friend's computer.

    The differences really are negligible. The gameplay itself is unaffected, so you're not missing out on any of the actual game. After you shoot zombies, they disappear after a little while in censored, rather than staying on the ground in the uncensored version. Thats the only real thing I noticed that was different. The censored version is pretty gory too. I have no idea why they just changed the 'bodies on the screen' thing.

    Don't get me wrong, I'm protesting as much as anyone else the fact that Australia has a nanny-state-gamers-will-kill-your-children version, I think it's ridiculous. But don't let politics cloud the game. If you can't manage to get the uncensored version, you're not missing out on much.

    A long time gamer here. I got L4D2 uncensored a long time ago, during the 'early holiday' sale right after L4D2 was released for 30 usd.

    To the person who is buying, you can't use PayPal unless you have a credit card from another country. The only way to buy from other steam stores besides Australia's that I know of is to either use a Mastercard or a Visa because they do not cross-check your details. Make sure to put your country as US when buying. Then enter the rest of your address as normal.
    Check out pcpowerplay.com.au to those who want to be in a group buy. That's where I got my copy of L4D2 back then. :D

    Also here's a handy trick when you want to view other steam stores without going back to the main page.
    Say you want to view the L4D2 page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/550/
    Simply put ?cc=(country code) behind it. So for the UK, it becomes http://store.steampowered.com/app/550/?cc=uk
    Works for all pages in steam.

    Besides L4D2 you might also want to check out Bad Company 2. The squadpack brings the original price of 50 USD down to 37 AUD(UK store). This expires on the 2nd of April so be quick!

    And you REALLY WANT the uncensored version for L4D2. This was the difference that people made a whole new steam account for even though they already bought the censored version.

        Try a random address in the UK for the city, state and postcode. But keep your 'Billing address' the same.
        Unless they changed it very recently, it should still work. People have been successfully using this trick for a long time.

        I hope no one buys the censored version. It's a completely different experience and takes nearly everything out of the game. The only plus is that you experience lag less often. That's not worth the sacrifice IMO.

        If you do buy it, either by accident or you are just desperate, if you change it to the uncensored version by modifying some files (like someone above posted), your steam stats/friends will all be screwed up. It'll be basically unplayable. Just thought I'd warn others before they make the wrong decision.

          No, it works fine. I've had a 100% positive experience with them.
          Also heard stories where people got a used key by accident. They contacted support and got another key.

          Should take note that now they wait for the e-cheques to clear before sending you the key. I was told that this was because of the increased number of scams.

          But buying from Steam directly is better. Cheaper, legit and faster.

      It's a PC game, there's no "region" to worry about.
      The xbox version may have region control, but this is a Steam deal which means PC only.

    For L4D purists, you can play the L4D maps in L4D2. I cant access the sites at work, so google will help you find them. Once you play the new infected on the old maps, you can understand why the maps between L4D1 and L4D2 are drastically different, so many spots are just instant death.

    I bought the AU censored version previously, but refunded it immeditely and bought the UK version. The difference in the feel/mood of the campaigns is drasticly different. No doubt the censored version is easier on your cpu, and your not blinded by blood splatter, but hey this is a game about killing zombies in a very violent fashion.

    Imagine watching any old or new zombie movie where there is no blood.

      I'm thinking a good workaround is to set up a new Paypal account based in the UK, credit it with enough to buy the game from my Australian Paypal account, then use the UK Paypal account to pay for the game..

    I logged onto steam store with UK ip. and purchased with my mastercard with country set as UK.

    paypal didnt work. says some message about my account not authorized to make purchases for that country.

          This worked for me too, but only in Windows.. On my Mac, the VPN would not connect.
