not ready to buy as its too early, but a few question.
Japan sim, so when ready we buy the sim from you,pop it in our phone (LG G3, Sony Z5, iphone 5) and activate it when we leave Aust? (or activate when we arrive). Then the phone is fine as a data only tablet (no calls can be made, well I guess you can use voice call via Messenger)).

When we get back in Aust we just pop our Telstra sim back in.

Do I have that correct, is it as simple as that? no setups at any time, no data lost or changed on the phone?

  It is basically when you land pop it in and it self activates. Depending on the APN settings on your phone you may need to make slight adjustments to those (though we have a guide sent with every sim to step this process through)! And yep come back home and reuse the Aussie sim. Thats it really.

    Can docomo use throughout japan as i am going tokyo, takayama, kanazawa, hakuba, kyoto and osaka. 16-17 days… Any suggested solution??

      Took one to Japan in November. You get the sim delivered here then put it in and turn on the phone in Japan. It'll automatically activate.
      
      I believe DOCOMO has the widest coverage. Never had any issues in Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Osaka and even some more rural areas.

  you can buy from vending machines inside the airport 24/7, so dont waste money buying a sim here which may or may not expire by time you get there

    is there a difference in buying it here - will it be activated vs the ones from vending machiens you'll have to activate yourself? Which may, or may not be an issue depending on how friendly and lucky you are with troubleshooting, given it'll all be in Japanese?
    
    I assume this includes the Haneda airport (where I'll be landing as well). And that you can choose what sim card size? Does it handle all the major networks that work throughout japan?

I would suggest paying extra from a company that stands by its product. Or get a sim when you get there. At least you will know that it works.

Bought 4 sims for USA and 1 was dead on arrival. So I had to spend my time and extra money to buy one in NY. Contacted them 3 times about this, and have not heard a word from them. This is several months ago. So i would say be aware that you will not get any support if your sim fails.

Have used T-Mobile in Hawaii and had great coverage.

Some people prefer to not have a local number but I find it makes booking things much easier (e.g. for reservations). Small price to pay fur convince and I have previously bought SIMs locally in the US, it wasn't cheaper!
