Anyone tried to walk into JB/HN and haggle on price? I feel like you could get it cheaper than this if you did.

    • Yep, there's not much "deal" in "$4 Off" at least for those near an ]over-]stocked store that carries 'em… :-/

      • They dont have stock of Chromcast

        • Some shop (below) seemed to have…

  • +1

So, "Chromecast 2" sales are -s-l-o-w-i-n-g- already?!?

PS What new features does it offer, over the orig'l one?

    • the wifi/casting is vastly improved …it's just generally an upgraded unit.

      • There's no upgrades outside the wifi bands and apps

    • +23

What new features does it offer, over the orig'l one?

When you're not using it for streaming, you can use it as a sink plug.

      • Waterproof, eh? :-)

      • When I am done with it being used as a sink plug, can I use it back for streaming?

    • +1

None except more apps and 5Ghz wifi

5GHz range is so short its not even funny.

Unless you got multiple APs in a house? Maybe apartment is fine

      • Just get a Dual-Band repeater (ie, with 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz WiFi)

    • The original would overheat, the new Chromecast does not. I think that is a good thing

      • What's symptom(s) indicate overheat in orig Chromcast?

        • +1

I'd hazard a guess at being very warm to the touch

        • @cornbeef: so almost like every electrical product ever made ?

        • Some people have reported that it is hard to stream anything when they get really hot, it was something that was mentioned last year when the new Chromecast was released. There are various pages when you Google the issue of people cutting the old Chromecast apart to add heatsinks.

        • @porsche804:
anyone tried the good ole' Ham Radio fix:

          • fan and/or
          • heat-sink

          …? ;-)

  • +1

    What's the RRP of CC2?

    • +2

      59.00

  • I'm after the new Chromecast Audio to attach to my AV receiver so I can stream Spotify directly, but in no hurry.

Will wait until prices retreat to high $30s as they occasionally did on the prior gen.

    • Don't expect such a big discount, ie, w/ ver 2.

For the orig'l, people didn't know what it could do
& needed a price draw to try it out.

      This time round, they don't need such a draw;
even if they don't own the orig'l, they may
have seen how friends' Chromcasts work.

      • I expect it to go down below $40, say $49 in EOFY sales, so just another few months.

    • I am using the previous model on my Yamaha Amp to steam Music and Videos (uses the front facing HDMI and power from the USB next to it).

It does the job…can switch the TV if I want the videos or just run music with this port!

  • +1

What tv shows and films do they have?
The description makes it sound like they have their own media database, for someone like me that has never used one before.
Or is it just me? Haha

    • +2

      All of YouTube, etc. ;-)

    • +2

The Chromecast itself is just a streaming device. Does not store anything. It is basically for people to stream content from their PC/Laptop/Phone to the TV without cable.

    • +1

whatever you have on your laptop/phone/media server :)

      • +1

        True.

But - in the case of (at least) YouTube videos,
even Chromecast 1 is "smart" enough to fetch 'em
directly via your WiFi Internet connection.

So, you can start 'em & use your control device
to do other things. Saves its battery, too.

    • +2

It isn't a content service, it's just used for streaming content from your phone to your TV.

Namely things like YouTube, Google Music, Spotify, Netflix, Pandora, Twitch.TV etc.

      • Is there an interface that you use on it?
How do you search for something?
Im imagining typing things wouldnt be that simple without a keyboard.

I have youtube app on my tv and typing in that is a nightmare

        • +1

You do the typing/searching on your phone/computer and then press the chromecast button on your phone/computer) and it sends it to your telly to stream.

        • +1

The interface is your mobile phone, either Android or iOS.

You can also use a laptop/PC to stream a tab to the screen.

        • @Sturmeh: wow sounds way better than the crappy tv app

        • +1

          @Barry Beetroot:
          Thanks mate!
          Might actually get one now!

  • If you find that you need 3 devices (either Chromecast or Chromecast Audio), then you can get it cheaper from HN by using the newsletter discount. And it will have local warranty.

    • +1

Or convince friends and family they NEED Chromecast or Chromecast Audio

  • Where's the cheapest price to buy the Chromecast audio.

    • +1

eBay UK $48.40 The only problem it comes with USB Power plug (UK shape)

      • Thanks mate… I might grab one here just for the plug.

      • +1

and the warranty isn't two years like the Australian-sourced units

    • -1

Currys.co.uk £14 which is around $28. Sadly they don't post internationally. I'm eyeing for a chromecast audio too but i'll wait patiently. That's a sign that prices will go down sooner or later.

  • be careful with DWI, if you have any issues they are not the best to deal with, often items are sent out of HK aswell for those that didn't know - look up their customer reviews.
I am currently waiting over 6 weeks to have my faulty phone replaced and heard nothing from them for about 3 weeks now.

why can't they do audio and video together? so they can sell Chromecast or Chromecast Audio separately? what a silly idea to leave the competitor to do a one unit has both at $69 or lower

    • One uses HDMI and does both audio and video, other uses audio cable and only does audio, which is good to plug into old set of desktop speaker in the shed.

    • A regular Chromecast has a HDMI plug and the Chromecast Audio has an 3.5mm audio plug thing. You still get audio out of your Chromecast through the HDMI.

    • They can do both. I've got an old CC1 plugged into the hdmi port of an amp that I only use for audio (mp3s off a nas, streaming radio, Google play music etc). It used to be connected to my tv for watching movies.

    • the Audio has a DAC in it for AV equipment that can't take digital input

  • +3

I grabbed mine from jb hifi. prefer to pay $4 for same day pickup! :D

  • Anyone compared the new one with the old one?

    • plenty of comparisons on youtube

  • Will this work to stream the AFL live app onto the tv with an Ipad?

    • +1

Maybe if the app has the Chromecast logo on it. Alternatively, you can get a free CrownBet account (plus get the bonus $50 bet thing they give you) and watch all the AFL games live from there. (Although not sure if that can CC as well)

      • I looked into the Crownbet account and it appears to require a deposit to access AFL live.

Which customers are eligible to watch AFL Live Vision on their CrownBet mobile applications? Exclusively available for all logged in iOS and Android application customers who have either deposited $100 into their CrownBet account within the previous month, or who have a current account balance of $100 or greater.

        • Ahhhh. Didn't realize. I got lucky at the Melbourne cup and have a few hundred in the account just doing nothing. I tend to add in cash when I see the old add $50 and get a $50 bonus bet deals as well.

    • +1

If it doesn't you can also mirror your screen.

I got the Chromecast 2 on the weekend and love it. Just be advised though that if you are planning to use it at hotels (ie their Wifi), if it requires things like a user login (eg Surname and Room number) to get on, then you will not be able to do this directly from your CC.

I'm researching ways to work around this but I think the easiest way is to:
A: Bring along your portable Router (eg Apple Airport or that nifty TP Link one that costs about AU$25)
B: Bring another Device that can Hotspot (Device B) and use Device B as the WIFI Access Point and Device A as the 'caster' (Note, this will chew up your Data allocation unless…C)
C: Install MyWi (Jailbreak iPhone app) and do 'B' but MiWi allows you to share your WiFi connection to the ChromeCast
    D: Google Chromecast Hotel

I'm still testing out what the best way forward for me is but as I'm stuck in Canberra this week I'll have to wait till I fly back this weekend and grab my Airport and try out the options.

    • What I did in a similar situation that seemed to have worked for me was this. It was kinda like B, but instead of leaving the device B's mobile data on, I've turned it off as soon as Chromecast (mine was 1, but I think it shouldn't make much difference?) was working.

Didn't run it extensively, so not sure whether it would cut out midway through your streaming.

      • I tried that last night and when I turned it off, it ran for a short while then died off once the buffer ran out. I was thinking maybe 15-20 secs though.

  • im going to the states soon. i wonder how much these are over there, and if they are cheaper?

  • I bought 2 chromecast for BHphoto for 50 USD, but now 35 for each plus 6 USD shipping fee

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1186572-REG/google_goc…

  • can't … resist

  • Saw these for $58 today at Bing Lee. So any bargains are going to be small ie a few dollars here and there.

  • +2

I got one. Not for the discount specifically but just the fact that it doesn't look like they'll go for much lower at least for the next few months, time that could be spent actually using it. It's cheap enough to be a toy, and the functionality tells me that it won't need to be updated yearly.

  • So with one of these I can get rid of my hdmi cable withe usb power thing that I need to play movies from my samsung tablet on the tv?

    • Yeah, you can stream certain things onto the TV without needing to plug in anything.
They are slightly different though (i.e. Chromecast wouldn't mirror your phone screen, it requires apps that support Chromecast for you to stream stuff onto it).

Something like Localcast allow you to stream your video from your phone or SD card, but there is limitations on what Chromecast can play (I think).
      From app description:

Please be aware that the Chromecast only supports a couple of formats. It can read containers like mp4, mkv, 3gp and m4v, but all these containers can use different codecs. If you can't hear the audio of a video, then the audio codec is not supported. If you can't see the video but hear the audio, then the video codec is not supported.

    • Due to the limitations of the chromecast as detailed above, i believe A wireless Disply adapter would suit your needs better.

  • thanks for that.
so it's still hit and miss if it can play all the movies I have for the kids on the tablet.
I just thought if I can playing the movie on my tablet then I could stream it to the tv using the CC
    without any issues.

    • Widi or miracast adapters would be better solutions with more functionlity for your purpose. I personally use a microsoft wireless display adapter (won an auction at $30 on eBay) that I am extremely happy with. Belkin and tronsmart are other popular manufacturers of suitable adapters.
