  • Wow great prices!!! - might just have to book!!

  • How do you find these deals ?
I went to the website and they are not advertised

    • +2

Quite simple. This particular deal is not on IWTF's homepage. To find it, go to the bottom right of the homepage then click 'And check out All of our Flight Deals' which takes you to the deals page. You'll see all the current specials there :)

$826 has to be one ofnthe cheapest prices mel lax?

    • Except for those of us that got them for ~$600 with QANTAS last year ;)

  • +1

    No Perth TA?

    • There wouldn't be any direct flights, as an OzBargainer you would simply book a Tiger or JetStar flight to Melbourne.

      • +1

Of course there are no direct flights from Perth, but that doesn't mean airlines don't have fares PER to LAX. Same goes for Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart, etc.

  • Anyone been around there able to comment on price of taxi/uber compared to here? For example using uber to go to santa monica, main attractions? I am guessing its probably expensive given our dollar?

    • Colleague was in us last week. Taxi was bit more expensive than here.

    • We were in Santa Monica last September and other half used uber share to UCLA and very reasonable and reliable - about 10 usd. I imagine if you are referring to Disneyland, it would be expensive.

    • I was in Northern California this time last year and used Uber a lot. They seemed to have a lot of promos on, and they're more aggressive about it than when I've used it in Melbourne and Sydney. Probably because they actually have a competitor there, Lyft. One of the promos was US$5 flat rate anywhere in downtown SF area, but my trips were generally no more than US$10. As an international tourist I could only use Uber cause Lyft didn't accept international credit cards or Paypal.

I'm sure United have changed since I last travelled from Melbourne to LA in 2012 but it was shocking. No personal entertainment, all screens where shared on the aisles and they repeated the same stuff again and again on the flight. I had no choice but to sleep for most of the 15 or so hour flight.

Nevertheless, these prices are great indeed. However if you are paranoid about the above I'd highly recommend checking if the specific aircraft provides seatback entertainment.

Haven't been on it, but I'm pretty sure Melb-LAX direct is a brand new 787 dreamliner.

A cnet usually business FF did a sort of review of 'economy plus' http://www.cnet.com/au/news/15-hours-on-a-boeing-787-dreamli…

      • Sydney is also going to be 787 dreamliner from the end of this month..

Flew SYD - SFO - IAD, JFK - LAX - SFO - SYD with united last Sept. 777 across the pacific all had personal screens and movie selection was good. Didn't like that if you wanted a "snack" between meals you had to buy it but soft drinks were free. All international flights landed on time.

Be aware that on the internal flights of less than two hours they don't stock food to buy which is not good with a small hungry child when they are running late and internal flights on the planes we flew had personal screens but you had to bring your own earphones!

Think of it as an above budget airline but not with the bells and whistle of others and thats what you get.. Note if you buy direct with United online, you actually get a 24 hour cooling off period where you can cancel no charge. I did this and got charged in AUD so no foreign transaction fees this time.

For the cheap price, I would fly it again but if I was paying close to full price and Qantas was only marginally more, I would lean to QF.

    • Back in 2012 United we're using aged 747's. In early 2014 they used newer 777, which had personal screens. More recently they use brand new dream liners. Much better facilities, however, as with any airline, pretty crammed in cattle class.

    • I've travelled Sydney to LA return with United Airlines in 2013 and US domestic in 2014, and found them to be very comfortable, with screens on the back of each chair and a very impressive movie/TV selection. I watched several movies that are still in cinemas, had enough choice that I wasn't watching the same stuff on the return flight, and certainly didn't get bored. Sydney to JFK airport in the back row of the plane (premium economy) got very cold towards the end of the trip. I had a scarf, gloves, beanie, shoes, jeans, trenchcoat and blanket on and was STILL cold. Air hostess would only offer me yet another blanket. Pretty decent food from what I can recall. My flight experience was only marginally below QANTAS.

"Air hostess would only offer me yet another blanket."

Not sure if it would be reasonable to expect much note …

        • Surely they have a thermostat or something?

      • "Air hostess" .. roll on the 1970s .. LOL .. :-) .. !!

    • Can confirm the United dreamliner is half good, half crap. The dreamliner bit is great, atmosphere much better, the windows are very cool. The United bit is the crap part. Crap stewards, crap food, meh seats, ok entertainment. I really missed the self serve snacks, drinks and amenities on Qantas planes. The Qantas meal offerings are also MUCH better.

  • @IWTF FTW!

We just got back used uber almost every were! With the exchange rate as is its not the best but compared to taxies was cheaper (as long as you don't use them when surging) also lyft had a sign up promo 5 x $10 rides for free for signing up so between my fiancé and my account a lot of the rides were close to free. We went Hollywood to universal for 15usd I think it was

    • What payment method did you use to use Lyft?

      • Just used PayPal :)

  • Once you find cheapest fare do you just book through whoever is cheapest? i.e. Travelgenio, Bestjet etc that pop up?

    • Yes, but unfortunately IWTF don't always display available pricing. I went to book through their link at BYOjet after finding a great fare, but when I got to the payment page the price was much more expensive ($300+).

Jesus. Pay the few extra $$ and at least make it worth your while in food, beverage & entertainment.
Qantas have similar priced flights operating A380's. Far more room, more comfortable, and at least you earn QFF points.

    • Deal is expired? And where are you seeing Qantas at similar prices?

      • +2

TA, deals similar in price to this come around quite often lately. You should know this..

        • Not sure what point you're trying to make?

  • Any idea what an American Airlines 747-700 flight will include regarding creature comforts?

    • Unfortunately American Airlines don't have any 744's…. Across the Pacific its Boeing 777-300ERs which are brand new to the fleet..

      • I'm a bit confused. Our flights (7380) are with AA, but operated by QANTAS (QF 0015Q). Are we flying with QANTAS or AA?

        • +2

You are on an American Airlines codeshare flight. So your booking is with AA, however you are actually flying on a Qantas plane

        • +1

@hindo: You are flying on a Qantas 747 which has all the standard Qantas international amenities.

  • Any deals departing LA to Melb?
