  • Looking for a cheapish but reasonable quality chef's knife, any suggestions?

It's quite hard to make a suggestion without knowing your preferred type of knife. If I wanted a cheap knife I'd go for a victorinox, they're cheap, easy to maintain and have a wide range of styles. If you want a seriously cheap knife you can't go past kiwi brand knives. This Ivo looks ok for the price, I've used them before, they're a bit clumsy but damn, 10 bucks for a European made knife?

      • Sorry, that knife is $20. Still crazy cheap. After discount they're $39 from our supplier.

As magnafunk said, go for Victorinox. I believe they make the swiss army knives and their knives are excellent for the price!

    • Another vote for Victorinox as a decent budget knife.

I'd suggest staying away from Kiwi knives though, they use cheap crappy steel that's difficult to sharpen and doesn't hold an edge.

    • Victorinox are good, but really it's worth going into a knife shop and trying them. I was going to order a victorinox online since I like the one my brother has, but I checked my local knife store and found that I much preferred the Icel chef knife - it was just more comfortable to use.

      • And i can't stand the Icel, the handle feels quite square in the hand after 10 minutes use, which reinforces the fact that you should go try a few out, what we suggest may not suit you

    • if 100 bucks fits your definition of cheapish I'd have a look at Tojiro DP gyuto on ebay. I think they come in 210mm, 240mm and 270mm.. depending on what size you like.

    • Sharp brand can be good, usualy a 20 or 25 chef will cost you $20.the 20 is about as wide in blade as a victorinox broad blade 20cm, German steel, sharpens easy.

If it was for me id buy a cheap knife like the sharp 25cm chef knife for $20, a op shop bread knife for 10cent-$1 a victorinox paring knife for bout $8 and a accusharp knife sharpener for $20. Add a cheap knife steel and for 50-60 bucks its every knife id need and a way to maintain.

Dont use accusharp on expencive knives as it takes more metal off though.

Hey the Ikea 1 piece knife is pretty good to. I got a full set and love them. I don't need to be as gentle when sharpening them as when I am sharpening Globals.
