Sony 50" FHD 3D Smart TV KDL50W800C $995 @ Good Guys, $998 @ HN

80

Not as cheap as the previous ebay deal with Bing Lee, but same as previous deals from HN.

Not sure if the $25 credit still applies with HN if signing up for the newsletter.

Might suit those who don't have the space for the 55" version for $1095.

    • So an extra $100 gets the 55" model. Also to get that $150 TGG EFTPOS card you need to purchase the concierge service (which by the looks is a Good Guys version of a store warranty which in my opinion is a major ripoff because you already get statutory warranty by the law for the first year) with the 55" TV which is $6.21/month or $74.50/year. Just some details that you need to know.

      • It's good if someone already has the concierge service. Doubt many people would though.

        • It doesn't matter because the giveaway terms of the $150 EFTPOS card states that a concierge service must be purchased with the TV (not before hand). In other words only valid if you add a concierge to the order with the TV. Not valid if you already have a concierge service on another TV that doesn't qualify for this giveaway. Just some thing to bear in mind.

So you basically need to pay $74.50/year to get a bonus $150 EFTPOS card from that. Still that $150 EFTPOS card pays for the first 2 years of concierge but then i believe you can only spend the card balance at TGG stores?. It's nothing really but a form of a $150 TGG gift card.

          @hollykryten: free $1 then! Still a bargain

        • @Cooties:

Yep it's still a bargain. Just saying this concierge service is nothing but a glorified store warranty and also that the only way to get the bonus $150 TGG card is to buy a concierge with with the TV purchase. Concierge is a bit of a waste of money for the first year since you're already covered by 1 year statutory store warranty.

        • @hollykryten:

Just done some research and it seems that the eftpos card can be used anywhere that eftpos is accepted :D Not a bad deal.

  • Hi guys, want to have your opinions about good brand FHD vs generic brand UHD. I am looking at this TV and Hitachi posted here. I want to know which one generally will give me better picture Sony FHD or Hitachi UHD. I am sure Sony screen is better than generic brand but how FHD and UHD is factored in here? Thanks.

I would likely go the FHD. Remember, unless your sitting about 1-2m from the screen, you won't really benefit from the resolution difference, especially at 50". However, from your normal viewing distance (probably 3.5-4m) your eyes will definitely notice difference in black levels/better colour accuracy.

      Remember the following with UHD:
-no 4K content available other than a few titles on Netflix, and I'm not sure if cheaper UHD TV's can encode x265 for Netflix 4K (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

-You'll also need 25mb/s minimum internet for Netflix 4k

-yes, 4k blu ray is dropping in May in Aus, but will you spend $600 on a player?

-majority of movies are mastered and projected in 2K. Majority of titles already released on 4K blu ray overseas are upscaled 2K, not native 4K.

-lastly, and most important, unless you've got a big projector screen, you won't see the additional detail UHD offers. According to 4k benefit calculator (link below), 50" TV sitting at 3m away offers 0% increased in perceived resolution. In fact, someone with 20/20 vision; their eyes at that distance with a 50" tv can only resolve a resolution of about 800p (aka FHD isn't even seen in all its glory).

Sorry for the rambling. In summary, I feel better FHD panel is better than a cheaper UHD. Blacks are important.

      • Hi edshays, thank you for your info. I thought so … good FHD panel is preferable than average UHD. Although the comment below about UHD 49" LG will be a bit difficult to decide? I mean LG is mainstream brand too.

        • Hi,

I'd probably go take a look in the flesh. I am not too familiar with all the current models etc so hard to comment. Whatever looks best to your eyes!

        • @edshays: Thank you for your reply. Eventually that will come to that. Although I have difficulties doing comparison when: 1) the store doesn't have both TV on display 2) The TVs don't play the same movie/program.

Any tips on what I should look at? Thanks.

        • @peuwayaqdq:
Yeah understand. Maybe go to one of those house home hubs that have a few electronic stores in one so you can see a few different stores in one (the home hub near me at castle hill nsw has good guys, harvey norman and jb hifi). Good guys and harvey norman usually have better lighting for tvs than jb.

As I said, I'm not all that on top of current tvs.

Just purchased a projector, and my tv is a plasma, as plasma rules! Sadly they don't sell them anymore

  • Note also that the UHD 4K 49" LG 49UF680T is currently the same price at TGG

Edit: and HN also, according to the post above mine, which I just noticed!

  • Tried HN, JB and TGG in Browns Plains during wkend. Not a store had 55" Sony FHD TV in stock. JB confirmed new stock should arrive this week but the special sales will end after 09/03/16.

  • With the 'CTECHIE' 20% discount code, you can get this TV for around $800 from The Good Guys ebay store.
