Yeah…just got an email. Who knows if it will turn up.

"Congratulations on being among the first to register for a brand new Raspberry Pi 3 to use with your free Watson IoT Platform trial! In order to accelerate the time it takes to begin exploring the cognitive world of Watson IoT, we are including a microSD card AND the latest Raspberry Pi (the Pi 3) at no cost to you. You will be receiving them at your registered business address over the next few weeks."

        • @jimbler: I got one too.

Send us the link at <IBM Raspberry Pi Promo/India/Contr/IBM>

Obviously using Lotus Notes. Checks out.

        • @jimbler:

          Anyone received there's yet?

        • @captain smash: nope but its coming from OS so im expecting a month, if its sooner then better but yea…

        • @captain smash: Will post when/if it arrives. People in Sydney/Melbourne will probably get it before me.

    • +2

I've been chosen to receive this. Got the email.

      Thanks OP

    • got one on saturday

  • I got my email too…cool.

  • Fingers crossed!!

  • +1

Got my e-mail as well confirming I got one. :-)

    • Same here, but they send it to the work address!

      • Didn't you use your work address?

  • got the email too,

    thanks OP

  • Congrats to those who are getting a freebie. If you happen to be in that category, but are not actually planning on doing some development on the hardware you are about to receive, it may be nice to pass the freebie onto someone who might actually hack on it. If there are generous people here, I'd like to put up my hand for one - I'm interested in hacking the hardware but my application to IBM went unanswered.

    Cheers - Thanks.

    • +6

It still is basically the cheapest computer around, you could always just buy one!

  • -4

Got the email and replied to ask the delivery address to be changed to residential, no reply, has anyone tried same thing?

  • Any signs of the Pi turning up?

    • Came here to check too :P

      No sign yet.

      Take a load off Fanny

      • -7

        Are you crazy

        • +1

You are boycotting a company that you admit you never buy from over a free initiative & you ask me if I am crazy?

        • -6

          @crazyperpman:
Why should I pay for a FREE raspberry pi
I boycott companies that do not honor their freebies

        • @fanny: Who asked you to pay? I thought you didn't get a response and this is why the boycott is being enforced. I don't see this as a "freebie". This is a chance for a company to put the hardware in the hands of developers using their platform to see what it is capable of.

From my understanding, you have signed up, been lucky enough to be selected in front of others that may or may not have put the hardware to better use and now because you don't want it shipped to your business address, you are upset. I would think IBM would need the business address is to somehow limit the items that would be snapped up by people who would not be able to assist them in development.

As someone else has already pointed out, the item is very cheap to purchase comparable to other computing devices and you can purchase one and have it sent to wherever you like.

        • -5

@crazyperpman: What if I am a developer working from home? And my business address is for different job, their policy is to reject all packages for purposes unrelated to work? I miss out on the hardware, and IBM waste courier fee to try to ship to me. Even a polite email reply is missing. I see their email address is in India, cant say I am surprised at the lack of response. And I am not spending money on something I should have gotten for FREE if they follow email instructions like they should.

    • +3

Have you even ever bought anything from IBM?

      • -4

No I am a Microsoft and Intel bunny

        • +2

So… You think they care that you're boycotting them?

        • -3

@Spackbace: They care about bad publicity I giving here

        • +2

          @fanny:

Oh right… Of course they do

        • -1

@Spackbace: FYI google show my complaint here if search about the deal, that is bad publicity

        • +3

          @fanny:

That's nice, search IBM and see how many pages you need to go through to find this post.

        • +4

          @fanny:

I'm sure we can all thank you for being such a great person and improving the chances of any company giving away developer products in the future.

Bad luck to them for picking you as a recipient, it'll teach them a lesson!

        • +3

@fanny: the narcissisty of some people is simply staggering….

and like IBM, or in fact ANYONE would give a shit about your moronic boycott. anyone that would come to this thread would instantly see how your acting and write off any opinion you had… but hey, i bet you have IBM organising an emergency stock holder meeting right this very second to see how they can possibly go into damage control……..

        • -1

@nosdan: How am I acting wrong? Do you like your emails to be ignored by a company supposed to be reputable? Do you like to have personal items mailed to your business address without asking for correct address first? Do you like to be told how lucky you are to be selected to get items mailed to the wrong address? The comments of some people here are staggering, lets call this the big boys with business address snob club, get real not everyone has business address

        • +4

@fanny: so, you also lied about "your" business address to get this sample? and you actually did not qualify for the product in the first place? hahaha oh it just gets better and better.

People with narcissistic personality disorder are characterized by exaggerated feelings of self-importance. They have a sense of entitlement and demonstrate grandiosity in their beliefs and behavior. They have a strong need for admiration, but lack feelings of empathy.

        • -2

@nosdan: I did not lie. Obviously I qualified for it because I receive the email.

        • +2

          @fanny:

Obviously I didnt actually qualify for it because I lied.

          FTFY
i hope you see the errors in your way and can slowly rebuild your life, or probably not. obviously another "victim" of the dunning kruger effect.

        • +2

          @fanny:

You qualified based on the information you provided. If you want it shipped to a personal address perhaps that changes your qualification?

Thanks for possibly making it harder for these kinds of things to happen in the future. I'm sure IBM was looking to risk manage the possibility of complaints from people like yourself by qualifying developers they were to send the device to - one unresponded email - instant boycott… seems unfair to IBM to me..

It's users like you that make me wonder whether it's worthwhile taking the effort to post up bargains or freebies for the community. I continue to do so because most OzBargainers are decent people.

      Fellow Adelaidean, got mine too!

    • Mine was delivered today (WA)

  • +2

I got mine today in Adelaide too.

    • Me too. This was one of those OzB gems, I had totally forgot about it and bam!

  • +1

    Nothing in QLD so far…

  • +2

I received my Rasp Pi today via "signature required delivery"!

Complete with little booklet on how to get it started + 16GB mSD w/SD adapter.

Just in time- my uni son is doing some stuff re: pi so I'll have a helper to "test"- maybe we'll come up with something cool to use it for.

    Yay!

    :)

    • getting started is simple, plug it into your network, power it up and ssh into it :) they can be setup completely from scratch never once seeing the desktop. ive run mine in the past this way. :)

if you have a wireless wifi dongle you can set the network stuff on a decktop/laptop with linux on it then you can simply plus the dongle in and power it up. dont even need to plug it into a network

      • +1

The Rpi3 has an internal Wifi chip, so you no longer need a dongle.

    • Are you sure it is 16gb , I am pretty sure mine was only 1 gig microsd..unless I was reading how much data was already on it..

      • mines 16, ive not looked further yet but you may have to expand the partition (plenty of step by step tutorials online of how to do this)

      • -1

It is 16gig, you need to reformat it to get the 16gb

        • when they make a backup they shrink the partition size to only just bigger than is needed, so on a 16gb card tehy will shrink it down to, in this case, 1gb. once you restore from backup, which is the state you have probably received your card, you need to regrow the partition back to its full 16gb size. it retains all the data still but just increases the partiton to fill the card.

ive been playin with RPi's for a few years now, by far no sort of expert but there certainly is a learning curve associated with them :)

          http://elinux.org/RPi_Resize_Flash_Partitions

ive not actually double checked on mine, i should probably ssh into it to check.

        • in fact i forgot about the built in config program. at a command prompt type "sudo raspi-config" and there is an option in there to resize it automatically

        • Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
          /dev/mmcblk0p1 8192 2289062 2280871 1.1G e W95 FAT16 (LBA)
          /dev/mmcblk0p2 2289063 30797823 28508761 13.6G 5 Extended
          /dev/mmcblk0p5 2293760 2359293 65534 32M 83 Linux
          /dev/mmcblk0p6 2359296 2488319 129024 63M c W95 FAT32 (LBA)
          /dev/mmcblk0p7 2490368 30797823 28307456 13.5G 83 Linux

looks like its already extended out of hte box, lukeloop are you trying to read the sd card in a windows machine?

        • @nosdan: yes I am trying to read it on a windows machine, I wanted to try and put Kodi on it for starters. I thought I needed more room to put Kodi on it, I figured re-format and then dload noobs and openelec or something. I don't have a power source yet so I am just reading up about it. My mistake possibly, I just thought I couldn't add more data to the card as it was locked to 1 gig or something.

        • windows can only see the FAT16 file system which is only the boot partition. the linux partition is the 13.6gb 2nd (extended) partition which can only be read with linux (debian on the RPi, ubuntu or any other flavour of linux you might want to use)

if you stick with using debian on the Pi you dont just "put" things on it as you would a windows machine you generally use apt-get if your using command line or one of the software managers. using linux is a hell of a lot different to windows and its a bit of a learning curve but a few years ago i finally got around to learning it (with the help of loads of googling) and now my HTPC, laptop and various micro-pc's (RPi and beaglebones mostly) all run some flavour of it with only my desktop now using windows because of the game support.

as for not having a power source, you can just plug it into a USB port on a computer or TV to get it going.

also fwiw, i couldnt stand noobs the couple of times i tried it, i found it much better to just download the image of what ever OS i wanted to run and burn it to the SD card on my windows machine using Win32DiskImager but ymmv

          hth

        • @nosdan: What do you mean by "you can just plug it into a USB port on a computer or TV to get it going". Obviously I would need power source to run Kodi though.

        • you just need to plug RPi's into a normal micro USB cable to power them up.

the only 2 cables you need to get them working originally is a network cable and the micro usb power, then you can log into debian via your pc across the network…

as the RPiv3 has onboard wifi once you setup the wifi the only thing you need to have plugged in is the micro usb to have them working… this is how i have one setup currently outside logging temperature data in an outdoor pond.

as for using this as a kodi player, im not sure, the only time i tried xbmc was a few years ago and it was rather hopeless…

  • No signs of it turning up in sunny CBR :(

  • Nothing down here in New Zealand yet either

    • Just had mine delivered in Auckland NZ

  • I hope they are sending them out in bulk lots or something. Got the letter that it's on the way a few weeks ago, but nothing yet in Brisbane.

  • Received my RPi3 today in Adelaide. (13/4/16)

  • +1 received for NSW.

  • I received this email from IBM:

We have been trying to send your Raspberry Pi 3 and microSD card, but an issue with your shipping address has occurred. Can you please provide your full shipping address in English and reconfirm your phone number and company name? Once we receive your information, we will ship the items as soon as possible.

Not sure what happened, I supplied the correct info, my work email & office address.

Seeing as others have already received the pi, I have reconfirmed the info and hopefully the pi comes thru.

    • -4

OR IBM delete you from their list without giving reason
They did that to me when I sent them an email

      • +1

        You no longer qualified eh

    • +5

      thats awesome.

i have this mental picture of you actually qualifying and being in the que to receive one but your incessant narcissistic bitching in your emails was enough for them to say "screw this guy, who does he think he is? he misses out now"

NO RASPBERRY PI FOR YOU, NEXT!!!!

or maybe it was your boycotting of IBM that threw them into financial ruins and they were forced to close up shop after sending mine but before they got a chance to send you yours.

either way, you have put an all day smile on my face now. thanks.

      • -6

idc, I gave them a neg for not honoring the deal and removing me from their list for no reason, that is my justice for the day.

        • idc, I gave them a neg

haha, dont worry that isnt going to take long to be revoked. already up to 4 neg votes on your comment, the next person to see this shit im sure will join in and neg you, revoking your pathetic neg.

          for not honoring the deal

i got mine, others got theirs….. seems they did honour it. i bet they even sent yours to the fake business adress you tried to pass off as your own. hey thats another happy thought, maybe where ever you had it sent they now have a shiny new RPiv3 because you arent actually at that address.

removing me from their list for no reason

oh, there is PLENTY of reason…. your comments here are perfect reasons….

that is my justice for the day.

wow, short lived "justice" hahaha. then again if you think boycotting them was also "justice" i guess having a neg revoked soon after will be as poorly satisfying in its own narcissistic glory

        • I have reported this as an invalid negative vote. "That is my justice for the day"

        • @crazyperpman: BWAHAHAHAHA thats gold. good work. :)

        • -5

@crazyperpman: Report all you like nothing will happen, I reported nosdan falsely misquoting me and nothing happen

        • @fanny:

Report all you like nothing will happen, I cried a little then reported nosdan but the mods said he was too awesome, purple monkey dishwasher, nothing happens. a potato.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA it just gets better than better.

        • +2

@fanny: Negative vote revoked by community. People listen and stuff happens if you have a valid point.

"That is my justice for the day"

        • -6

@crazyperpman: So what, all it means is you have buddies to circle jerk with on ozbargain, im still right in my neg and we all know it

        • @fanny:

So what, all it means is you have buddies

i dont even know anyone on OzB, but nice try. looks like you fail again. its just that people can simply see through your bullshit and are calling you on it.

im still right in my neg

obviously wrong again, hence why your neg didnt even last a day…

          and we all know it

votes seem to show the opposite of your statement https://www.ozbargain.com.au/ozbapi/comment/3615063/listvote…
arent you sick of being wrong yet?

        • -1

@nosdan: Prove to me what is the "bullshit". You cant because you have no proof. Otherwise I can say all kind of lie about you, without proof, does it become truth too?

        • @fanny:

Otherwise I can say all kind of lie about you, without proof,

oh please, PLEASE P L E A S E do this. its been fantastic value so far and i can only see this getting better from here.

    Just got this email:

Thank you for registering for the opportunity to attain a Raspberry Pi via our promotion. Due to overwhelming demand, we could not accommodate you in our promotion to the first 1500 registrants.

Thank you everyone non-genuine who ruined it for genuine users

    • did you get the initial acceptance email?

Thank you everyone non-genuine who ruined it for genuine users

meh, who says your somehow more important and worthy than the next person?

      • I'm only annoyed with the non-genuine users, not the genuine ones :)

I have an actual project to use it for, not just making it a Kodi device, so I will just buy one.

This was my first email back from them.

        • not just making it a Kodi devic

ahh yea fair enough, i agree with you there. i have a feeling some/several of these will just end up going to waste in a cupboard somewhere because people have no idea, never used linux before and wont care to learn it.

i dont really have a plan yet as to how im going to use mine, feels a waste to use it to replace my Piv2 thats currently working just fine in its job. ill find something that needs it tho.

  • Hoping i receive mine soon.. did get the email everyone else has gotten.

  • I got the initial email in March, but nothing since. Was there a confirmation email in between or will it just show up soon?

EDIT: Looks like it's arriving for people so I'll hang tight for a while more :)
