  • Cheapest ever.

  • Would this handle running as a Minecraft server?

  • Looks good, So THis is an empty Nas / Server, we have to then buy Hard disks to go into this right ? to make this into a NAS.

    • +2

Plus an operating system of some kind.

      • +4

        freenas, rockstor, xpenology.

just learnt to install xpenology and its brilliant.

        • xpenology have any issues with upgrades and so forth?

        • @dcarbonetti: i only just installed it less than 36hours ago. im still very very new to all this. infact, im still trying to find out how to use the NAS properly.

    • correct

  • not sure about favourite.
it sounds pretty good until u get a closer look.
    weak celeron,
    weak PSU
    2GB of RAM.

size is nice, but could build something similar for close to asking price. its basically mobo/cpu/psu in a case , nothing more. 2 x 1GB of ram is bleh.

    • +3

For $260? With 4 HDD slots, iLO, and a concise chassis?

It's not meant to be a powerhouse, but unlike the gen 7 you can upgrade the CPU to a Xeon processor.

    • +1

Do some research, there are a few decent CPU upgrades available, plus it's not hard to wack an extra stick of RAM in it.

Also, not too sure what you mean by 'weak PSU' but it's a MicroServer, isn't the point to be as green as possible?

      • just saying. pretty sure with such a crappy CPU you can build a box for around the same money.
PSU limits upgrade path, overall yearly power saving is not even worth mentioning.
        my five cents.
why research upgrades before buying? pretty backwards thinking.

        • This box is favored because of it's small form factor, I'd like to see you try to build a custom PC with the same specs/size for less.

Again, this box is chosen because it's small and efficient, it's wasn't designed to be a monster and much like most OEM pre-build machines, wern't manufactured to be upgraded, but more of a plug and play server.

Why research anything before buying? Because that's what you do if you're smart and like to know your options before committing to a purchase like this.

        • I wouldn't be so quick to call it a crappy CPU. It reportedly has double the performance of the CPU in the previous gen 7 like the N54L, and plenty of people found that machine sufficient for their purposes.

        • @atlas:

          have one. its pretty crap.
          i3 2105 is better

        • +1

@millusions: Perhaps then this server doesn't suit your requirements.

FYI you can also stick Haswell i3 chips like the 3220 into the G8.

    • You're half right. If you are not going to upgrade the RAM and CPU this isn't a great buy - if you need something plug and play.

On the other hand, why would you not upgrade the CPU. There are other faster and / or better options, but something like an i3 3220 (eBay is full of them) will work nicely and can be had for around $100: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-Core-i3-3220-SR0RG-3-3GHz-3…

~$500 for this + i3 3220 (or better) + 16GB RAM is an absolutely killer home virtualization server / NAS.

  • +1

I use this at work - it runs two web servers for internal use, hourly backup and two virtual machines with 6gb of ram. It works for my purpose.

  • I was looking at this pretty closely but i noticed that it only does RAID 0/1/10, surely that is not great as a NAS when you want Raid 5 or JBOD?

    • +1

JBOD would be okay? Use Drivepool or another software solution like Freenas to manage your array.

    • Just use software raid like ZFS Z-raid under AHCI.
I don't use the raid card with mine - it's just an additional point of possible failure.

      • +1

Make sure ECC RAM are used when running ZFS

        • +1

The HP Gen 8 only takes ECC RAM anyway.

    • JBOD stands for just a bunch of disks - anything that you can plug multiple disks into is JBOD :)

  • Any 8GB kits for these servers on these sales? Can't convince myself that I need 16GB…

  • I'm really tempted by this…if I just wanted to use it as a 1080p streaming file server, do I need to upgrade the RAM? Is it just a matter of putting in Xpenology/FreeNAS etc and I'd be ready to use it as a standard NAS?

If I wanted to transcode 1080p at a good bitrate with Plex, what would I have to do? Upgrade the CPU to an i3 and also add 8GB RAM?

  • Great timing my N40L purchased 5 years ago died today (shows as CPU overheating whenever I turn it on) so grabbed this and the 8GB. Perfect!

    Thanks

  • No problem. I purchased mine as a backup for my N40L!

  • That Amazon RAM is $140 to ship (so total $300aud) from Amazon to Australia and takes almost 3 weeks. Not a good deal.

    • Say what? It's $124usd shipped now that the price has changed, which is about $163aud.

      • Here's a copy paste from my cart right now:

        Items: AUD 154.79
        Shipping & handling: AUD 139.31
        Total before tax: AUD 294.10
Estimated tax to be collected:* AUD 0.00
        Order total: AUD 294.10

  • Are these suitable:

    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/crucial-16gb-kit-8gbx2-ddr3-160…
    $179 + $7 shipping = 186 shipped - takes ages to deliver

    http://www.i-tech.com.au/crucial-8gb-ddr3-1600-mt-s-pc3-1280…
    $111 per 8gb stick + $14 shipping = 236
    in stock apparently

    • Anyone able to confirm if these work or advise what RAM they have ordered/used?
