        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: can we pay off the BT amount prior to 12 months to avoid annual fee without penalty or we have to pay in 14 months plus $150 annual fee ?

        • @yht: I don't know of any credit cards that prohibit you from paying early… where they make BT > 12 months on application for a fee free card, I'm pretty sure it's a deliberate ploy to get an annual fee out of you, rather than a closure before 12 months.

  • does anyone know if balance transfer counts as the $1000 spend?

    • I remember seeing that it has to be purchases.
Therefore bank fees, interest charges and BT are excluded from the spend count.

    • definitely not.

    • shame, luckily $1000 is easy to spend

  • received my 40k points, 2 weeks after meeting the min spend. Westpac Altitude are also offering a 15% bonus points for converting to Velocity (ends this month) which is tempting to convert it all the more as I predominantly use the Velocity program

  • Whats the conversion rate from Altitude Rewards to Velocity? Is it beter than Qantas to velocity?

  • I have the ANZ FF card that was posted a few months back, could I also go for this card? I'll likely keep the ANZ card as the points per $1 are better.

  • Can I convert Qantas points for Velocity points and if so whats the rate?

    • No you can't, but once you have received the Qantas points, you can call up and request to transfer future earn to altitude rewards, if you prefer to have discretion as to which airline points to credit to, including velocity

David Jones AMEX is much better value. With Altitude Westpac you need 2,000 more points to accrue a $100 voucher and it's less points per dollar compared to DJ's Amex… Have a read into it. Only card benefit is having a VISA where AMEX is not accepted & the shop small offer.

  • -1

Hmm…. what is the worth of 40,000 points nowadays?

  • Seems like the ANZ deal is better?

  • Tempted to sign up for this but banking (no pun indented) on Westpac to add bonus signup points to their Altitude Black CC

    • -1

Thats what I've been thinking too.

40K doesnt seem that good to me - I got 50K off CBA for platinum late last yr and am in the process of getting 70K from ANZ for their black card.

      Westpac seem a bit stingy!

Think I will wait and see if a black offer with around 70K+ comes out.

      Also this seems better too:

        Hey it's free

  • I just applied for a Westpac card recently and got rejected (with 65k+ income) so don't think I'll try this again :(

    • wow that's rough! Maybe you have a lot of debt

      • It is a mystery how some of these are calculated. I got rejected for a CC, applied for the same CC six months later and got it.

      • Not really. Over 20k in savings and a maybe 4k on car loan. Unless they factor in HELP/HECS debt?

        • Yeap HELP/HECS play a part to them access whether you can service the cc or not. My home loan once got declined purely for that reason.

    • I had issues with them not understanding my pay slip, so I needed a letter from my employer.

    • I am in similar circumstance. 20k HECS debt, decent amount paid off (was about 35k). And income around the 50k mark. Yet I still got rejected for two credit cards, woolworths and commonwealth ($150 bonus).

I applied for the Westpac card as a current customer, which I was already in first stages of opening one of the bank accounts. REJECTED.

I then thought, heck, 40k points…it's worth more than the $150 annual fee, and it's for two cards. So I applied anyway, REJECTED, 2 days later. ACCEPTED…Hi, please confirm your income, final approval was sent through barely an hour after.

  • +1

I talked to them on the phone. They said I am still eligible for 0% balance transfer and 0$ annual fee so I guess I will go that way. Got accepted for $20,000 limit which is an ~800$ saving to my home loan over the year :)

    The cap limit sucks

You will need to wait 5 years to accumulate enough points for a business class flight

    • You're doing it wrong…

Your primary source of points should be from promotions and sign-up bonuses.

Even then, you do not "wait 5 years to accumulate points". You simply spend as you would anyway, and after 5 years you eventually have accumulated a significant amount of points to get something decent.

It's getting a small return out of money you'd be spending anyway.

      • That's right, if you haven't hit 500K points in 5 years - you're doing it wrong.

        • -1

If there is a cap 3750 pt per month how are you supposed to earn 500K in 5 years?

          Do the maths

          5 x 12 X 3750 = 225000

        • +1

@Aceboy884: Did you not read my comment?

You're not supposed to look at getting 500k by simply spending on your credit card (especially in Australia)… unless your goal is just to help the bank build up their profits?

Besides, if you're looking at spending to get those points, then clearly you're not rationally spending. You're looking for excuses/ways to spend to get the points, then getting frustrated when you realise that you have to spend so much money to get there.

Using credit card general spend to get points is just to give your usual spend a bit of a tiny reward (usually less than 2%).
Signing up for credit card bonus points like these is what you should be targeting to get heaps of points for very little spend.

No one is going to really argue with you about needing to spend $500k to get 500,000 points.. it's not like you're wrong on that.

        • @illumination:

Well you see, I'm not the average Jo

I use a my card to pay suppliers and yes I do spend my way to accumulate points

Hence I'm able to accumulate at least 250K a year

For the average person who don't have the need the spend then yes it's a good deal

But likewise a card for business is a bad deal because of the cap

        • @Aceboy884:

That's awesome then! Because that means for you, you're earning points on money you're spending anyway!

But I guess then your neg was interpreted the same way as if an average Joe (like me) negged a business card which had no cap on earn rates because of an annual fee of $1500 (despite an earn rate of maybe 2pts/$). And then you'd be there commenting and saying, "this might not suit an average Joe like you, but for people like me who have a business and spend $200k+ on paying my suppliers, this is an awesome card and well worth the annual fee."

Having said that, there was a recent case reported on Australian Frequent Flyer forum about someone's business expenses resulting in his accumulated points being rescinded. Pretty sad, unlucky and unfortunate, but you can't really argue with the bank because they do say something along the lines of "business transactions are excluded".

  • I never done any balance transfer at all. Can anyone let me know how it works ? I received a phone call on the other day from Citibank offering me a balance transfer and he said what he will do is giving me a cheque $$ then I don't need to pay it in full until 12 months, but I have to pay the monthly amount ($$ / 12) and I am not able to pay more or complete the full payment early. Is that right with this Westpac one ? I read in the other forum that we have to be careful when make other purchase (out of that balance transfer amount), they will charge interest as you owe them the full amount + new purchase. So it means, I can get them to give me $5K cheque then pay $357.14 ($5K / 14 months) monthly, then hide the card somewhere so I don't use it until 14 months lapsed. Is that right ? Can I pay in full before 12 months (to avoid annual fee being charged ?

  • Signed up for two, Thanks OP now what to do with all my extra $$ might look at buying a summer house

  • Did anyone get the welcome pack and it says first year free? As mine says $150 a year?

    Might call them.

    • +2

Called looks all good. Documents just give u normal card info with the 150 a year fee etc etc

  • Does anyone know which is better? 40K Qantas points or 40k Altitude points? (base on gift card, otherwise I know upgrade is the best…but you have to have the spare money to travel and etc….)

    • +4

Velocity points generally better than Qantas points, but 40k Altitude = 20k Velocity points. So better to take 40k Qantas points, then change to Altitude if you want to keep the card.

  • Do you earn points on Bpay payments with this card (ie paying bills online)?

  • +1

The 40k points appeared on my first statement after achieving $1k spend.
I applied after cancelling my Black card just one week prior

    • How do you choose what points they turn into whether it be altitude or qantas, I can't find the option to change it.

      • +1

It depends on what option you picked when signing up. If you provided your QFF number at the time, then Qantas. Better give them a call if you think you've got the opposite of what you want.

  • $30K salary req for a platinum card? This has become a joke.

Platinum used to be for the creme of society

    • +1

As did gold, with something like $60k minimum income back in the 90s. Then they put in a high level platinum (equivalent to the Amex Platinum in prestige) tier, which has slidden down to the average level now. Presumably simply because they get higher interchange fees for them, they give them to whoever wants one.

      • +1

I'm holding out for a Palladium card.

Edit: who am I kidding. I'm a credit card whore - I hold out for nothing!

  • 2 statement cycles and QFF points showing up on both Westpac statements with the correct QFF number, but nothing added to my QFF account. Anyone had the same problem?

    • Yes, me too. First statement issued last week with points showing as 'to be transferred', but nothing arrived on Qantas account.

      • Don't worry, they're probably using Australia Post.

    • I'm the same as you. Gave them a call but the guy just told me it had to do with the statement close date which had already well and truly passed so I don't think he knew what to do. I have just paid my balance in full again so will see what happens this month. My bonus 40k points are showing on statement for this month so fingers crossed they get transferred to Qantas.

    • still nothing shows up on QFF account but points was transferred on previous westpac statement.. strange!

      • Revenge will be sweet. As soon as my points show up on my QFF a/c I will be ringing and cancelling. Now I have a solid reason to cancel !!

    • Did you get any points in your QF account yet? I still haven't

  • Hmmm nervous to apply now, seeing as though some for rejected

Currently have a CBA platinum and an ANZ black

  • Is it normal for the welcome email to say that your annual fee is $150, and make no mention of the fee being waived for the first year?

  • Does anyone know if a current supplementary cardholder applies (they have no other accounts), they will get the 40,000 bonus points. The person who is thinking of applying is currently an additional cardholder of mine with the Black Qantas Amex and Mastercard.

  • I read the part about 'eligible purchases'…but nothing about ATO payments, as some cards have, and dont give you points for that.
Does anybody know if this card is the same?
    Thanks

  • Has anyone received any points at all from their Westpac account? My first statement had some QFF points however it has not posted for a couple of months

  • aceaceace1234,
Just by any chance does it say anything about 'ATO PAYMENTS' not counting toward points/ or not eligible purchases…please

  • Tried to open a saver account online, got rejected, told me to visit a branch. Bummer. Will see if I can get it today and whether their service is any better than Commonwealth. Fighting for months to get my points out of CBA!

    • +1

I called CommBank the other day to cancel my card, and they offered another 5K points to stay until my renewal in a month. I asked for 10K and they complied. Now whether I actually get these points before my renewal (ie. cancellation) is another question!

      • Good luck…

I cancelled one of my two cards after putting through over $20k in 10 months, didn't get any kidn of offer.

Still chasing my 40,000 qff pts for sign up on the other card now on the 4th statement for this card

  • Received my 2nd statement and still no points transferred to my qantas account

    • Yep, please join the long queue ;o)

      • +2

        lol :(

        • +3

I called them up and they said they did not have my QFF number on hand, I suggest you guys call them up and ask them where it is at. The statement says QFF number supplied but I would not trust this going by my call with them.

The points have been just sitting there, including the 40k, for a while. They said the points are transferred to the QFF every 22nd of the month or something

        • @aceaceace1234:
I called up also, and they said the same thing. No QFF number on hand. And to save people getting transferred 4 times like I was… call altitude directly. They can transfer you from there, while the general westpac number can be a pain to get through on.

I haven't received my first statement yet. But it should have my points on it.

        • +4

@broy: I also called Altitude Rewards on 1300 887 820 (available weekdays between 8am-8pm EST) who could see the points waiting to transfer, and linked my QFF number properly. They apologied to me and explained their rewards/QFF systems are seperate and sometimes don't get linked properly (even though my QFF appeared on my statement). Points will transfer to Qantas on my next statement.

        • @muncan:

I only applied for this card for the points so I am going to cancel as soon as I get my points. The conversion rate on this card isn't as good as the ANZ plat.

Basically if you follow up about your points it will just sit in a balance and not be released due to the qff number not linking

        • +3

@aceaceace1234: Hands up if you're only here for the bonus points 🙋🏼

        • +1

@muncan: Statement received today AM, points received today PM. Account closed tomorrow AM :-)

        • @muncan: Thanks, ringing that ph 1300 887 820 number worked a treat !!

        • @muncan: Did u open it in March? There telling me cause I did not open it in April?

        • @JakeTheMuSS: I signed up in February 🙋🏼

        • @muncan: i also had to do this

        • @aceaceace1234:

22nd has passed and I haven't received my points. Do you recommend other people call up to check if qff number is linked to account? Although they do say it can take up to 12 weeks to credit points.

        • @watwatwat: Yes ring them. I rang them a month ago, and they said that my qff no. was there but not correctly linked. Today, still no points, so I rang them again, and they said, that yes mine is 'now' correctly linked, and that they can see now that my miles were transferred on 21 May. I guess that is progress. I am sitting on my hands waiting from them to hit my QFF account. When I rang them today, no explanation was necessary, and so it is apparent that it is a very common problem.

  • On the application page for the eSaver account it states "The Westpac eSaver account comes with a Westpac Choice transaction account. One will be opened with your eSaver account, so you can easily transfer money in and out". I checked and the Choice account has a $5 monthly fee. Any way around this?

    • +1

      Any way around this?

Open a Reward Saver instead (and don't put anything in it). Worked for me.

  • The website says this offer is extended, now expires 6 July

  • Hmm shizzer I opened it when u posted this, but promotion only started in April?

Did anyone else open it early?

  • +1

Hi guys, i made a mistake not reading the full clause, dont make the same mistake i did with this pathetic bank. This offer is completely useless for existing westpac customers or if you cancelled recently. I cancelled about 3 months ago and applied for this offer. I managed to get the free annual fee refunded through my branch but i haven't received any points and i dont think i'll be receiving any. I've called the call center was told by some i'll receive points and some said i won't receive.

This is really pathetic, i had such bad experiences with westpac in the past and this is nail in coffin. Sick and tired of these guys. Plenty of offers out there, no reason to stick with them. I'll be cancelling my card soon. Their customer service is also terrible, they are well known for very rude customer service personelle both on phone and in branches.

    • Can confirm I'm existing card holder with Earth Black. I applied via existing customer link to receive no fee first year. I also spent the required amount for the bonus points and on my third statement they have just been applied. So rest assured you should receive the bonus points.

  • Can someone clarify the balance transfer application a little for me please? I'd like to BT $5k from another card to this Westpac card, what information do I need to supply in regards to this upon application, and how does Westpac then arrange the transfer?

Could I draw $5k as a cash advance (@2% cash adv charge + purchase rate interest) from another card, then Westpac BT's that amount?

  • I am having an issue with Westpac in that I applied for the card on the 23rd February 2016 and received it on the 9th March 2016. I transacted $870 on this card prior to the 21st March which is when Westpac issued me with a statement (so 2 weeks after I received the card!) . I subsequently transacted another $300 on the card on the 24th March. The terms of the offer were to transact $1000 in the first 30 days.

I have not received my points and so I called up Westpac and they tell me that the $1000 has to be transacted in the first statement cycle which in my case was 14 days after receiving the card.

In this instance they have changed their terms of the offer and so I have missed out on my points.

I believe that the card agreement is not in place till the card is actually activated and actioned on and in my case this was 9th March.

I am just annoyed that they can do this..as it is misleading.
