    What's the battery life like?

Can one of those Samsung SSDs be used in this?

    • as long as its 2.5" it can be chucked in there in replacement from the existing HDD in there.

    • If you use lenovo optimized (and why woudlnt you?) you can realistically get 6-7 hours.

The default power plan from the factoey is "high performance". So the CPU is stuck at 3ghz. That one yield estimate of 4 hours.

In other words, this notebook has pretty decent battery life is say.

Re: Cashrewards: Is the 8% cashback on the $888 amount?

    • Yes

    • +2

After getting this and upgrading the wifi card I totaled to $906. I only got $67 cashback. Was told by tightarse that the 8% was the total amount of sale before gst was applied.

You can see this on the term and condition from the cash rewards site.

"Rewards are payable on eligible purchases not including freight, delivery and GST."

If you need the notebook I'd say go for it. The total cashback effectively is around 6-7%. Not a bad deal.

    • @ahoihoi - Thanks for confirming. Looks like the Bearosaurus is incorrect. I suspected as much, I ordered a Lenovo G50 a few months go and the cashback was applied to the pre-GST cost. Slightly dodgy by Lenovo/Cashrewards.

  • Can you use the code on the student shop?

    • no

    • +2

Dont buy the whole shop now!

    • +1

Yea uh sure. Android? iOS? Take your pick.

Don't cut yourself with those edgy comments…

      I'm surprised you didn't throw in a Micro$oft

NSA Windblows 10. Am I rite?

  • Any deal for E560?

    • +1

No, otherwise I'm we'd know about it.

  • I got this during the last run on Ozbargain, even after upgrading the os to pro and replacing the memory to 16gb corsair, the performance (as compared to my T440 with 16gb, win 7 ultimate and ssd) still feels sluggish. The upgraded wifi also took significant time frame to download as compared to the t440.

Not sure what went wrong… Just pull the trigger for the Samsung 1t ssd ytd, hopefully the startup and opening programs or files will improve.

    • Obviously must be a software issue.

      • +1

Yea I hope it's a software or crap win 10 os issue. Gonna start fresh install with the new ssd, bugger all the man hours of software install and updates going down the drain :-(

    • You should do a speed comparison between both (ie timing the opening of an intensive application). Home vs Pro doesn't offer a speed advantage.

Edit: I understand, Windows 10 is on this vs Windows 7 on the T440. Sounds like a driver issue; Windows 10 is generally faster than Windows 7.

      • So used to win 7,,, yea I didn't specifically time it, but from the time I switch power button on to password screen, t440 nipped in a matter of less than a min. But the real fun begins when the password is entered to the time all background programs starts to run; t440 win hands down and I didn't even disable any startup programs. The e460 on the other hand struggles (u could even see the mouse lag when moving it around).

The win 10 pro has bit locker while the home doesn't yea?

        • It does have bitlocker but it's not enabled by default afaik

        • +1

Home can read a Bitlocker enabled drive but it cannot create one; Bitlocker does have overhead though. Is your T440 drive Bitlocker enabled?

As for the general condition.. that doesn't really sound right. If you can do a fresh install of Windows 10; you can download the ISO from the url below - your license will be tied to the hardware so no need to worry there.

          https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10I…

        • @DrStinge:

Yep Thx. I'm still tempted to revert back to win 7 though, since I am starting from ground up.

Yea I didn't noe about bit locker until I used the win 7 in the t440. Used to use truecrypt but developers no longer encourage use of it last couple of years.

I got the upgrade win 10 pro license from reddit, the first key failed and subsequent key managed to upgrade to pro from home smoothly. Not sure if I want to use the key again, suspect it's not retail key.

        • I don't understand how newer OS will beat older OS. Traditionally they never have. I still have a netbook with windows xp because I know a newer OS will slow it down. 64 bit vs 32 bit might be an argument, otherwise newer OS typically needs newer, more powerful hardware to remain in the ballpark speed wise. My 15yo laptop running linux is as fast as my dell i7 with windows 8.1. Needless to say, I'm not upgrading (sic) my dell to windows 10.

        • @LurvinOZB:

I got the upgrade win 10 pro license from reddit, the first key failed and subsequent key managed to upgrade to pro from home smoothly. Not sure if I want to use the key again, suspect it's not retail key.

The keys sold on Reddit are MSDN/Technet keys but they should work with no issues.

        • @Agret: I'm not clever at this but I once purchased a project in a retail pack from fleabay and when i tried to reinstall, it failed and had to call the MS hotline. Talking to that operator, was told it wasnt a retail and something like the msdn u mentioned. Wanted to transfer me to another operator in the US managing these type of keys and I hung up before he could even finish his sentence!

haha … didnt dare go near that disc ever …

I wonder if in future when i want to use the reddit key again and had to call the hotline, would the same thing be told..

    • +3

The SSD in your T440 compared to the HDD in the E460 will make a big difference. The Samsung SSD you bought should speed it up quite a lot.

      • I pray and I hope so. Was supposed to keep that laptop at around 1k with the wifi upgrade and 2 yr warranty but the ram upgrade already blew it over the 1.2k mark, now it's looking to be an extra $280+.

        Sigh

    • +1

Your T440 has a full powered Haswell CPU, as opposed for an U CPU on this one. In fact, the Sandy Bridge i5 on the *20 series 4-5 years ago is only ~18% behind this CPU. The biggest offender is the SSD though, its a massive difference in boot-time.

Try changing the power profile, and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows. The CPU is probably underclocked to converse battery and the OS definitely has bloats. Wi-Fi, the 3165 is a single-radio, consumer model compared to the 7260AC in the T440.

      • yea … that t440 cost me close to 3K without the ssd and ram upgrades, as compared to this e460. cant complain i suppose.

gonna have to spend the night downloading the drivers for the win 7 os.

    • Rounding this off, thought I share my findings.

SSD finally arrived yesterday, spent the whole day mucking wif the magician and migration which failed. Last resort 1am this morning; initialize the ssd on disk mgmt, format into a readable drive, removed the old hdd, in goes the ssd, plugged in a drive wif win 10 os and boot from there, works like magic!

In summary yes it's the lenovo bloat ware that causes the crawl, would highly recommend doing a fresh install instead of migrating/ cloning. Tip: keep handy the wifi drivers from lenovo website, save onto the desktop and slowly download the rest of the drivers selectively once the wifi is up.

Am now trying to find which driver is for the F1-F12 buttons…

Speed is good, quick crisp. Win 10 does have alot of rubbish apps pre-installed so google for removal instructions

TA, any similar deal for Yoga / Yoga Pro, Surface / Surface Pro (basically 2 in one small light laptop)? Cheers :)

    • +2
      • +4

Sorry TA, it's a good one but not small and light :( I would sacrifice performance for small and light package. Thanks for trying. Any future deal on those small and light variants would be great!

        • +8

All good. I'm constantly in talks with Lenovo now, so I'll do my best to find better deals going forward :)

        • @tightarse: thanks :)

        • +1

          @tightarse:

Keep em coming TA. I'm very much on the fence on that Yoga 14 deal - its very good value but think I would probably prefer the 12.5 (or even better a good deal on the Yoga X1!)

        • +2

@tightarse: Could you let them know that their next Thinkpad Yoga's should have Thunderbolt3 ports…dat external gpu for gaming/video rendering/etc, I care not for the non Thinkpad Yoga's, business grade only please. :D

        • @Wally Simmonds:

I'm much in the same boat as Wally and vsynca. Much appreciated if possible TA

        • -1

          @tightarse:

Any chance on an early end of financial year clearance deal on the T series?

          T460
IPS full hd (mutlitouch would be real good)
          Core i5/i7
          8gb ram
          1tb hdd
          Backlit KB
          Fingerprint reader
          Smart card reader

Total should be less than 2k.
Can lenovo priced it similarly to the current TAYOGA deal? ~1k?

I mean it would make sense. Let's say the component is the same as the one on this e460 (less the r7 m360 even). Why can't lenovo put the price of the T460 closer to this? After all we are just buying a nicer case. They can get the much more fancy yoga from 2 grand to 988. Why can't they do it for this?

I'd say the case alone shouldn't be worth more than 100 bucks. So having it over 100 bucks on top of this should be good ($988). I'd pay tad over a grand for it to come with the multitouch screen. (Which will make the notebook look sleeker).

  • Should I return the E560 and get this?

    • LOL When I got this, and the e560 popped up, I was wondering the same too! Haha

      Gd luck… Choices choices choices

      • Only benefit is it would be lighter but seems silly to pay slighly more for something that has a smaller screen.

        • Didn't compare specs weight but don't think u can feel much of a difference in real life, unless u lug the laptop around as u type and I could be wrong.

U seem to have the answer to ur qn

    • any difference beside the size?

      • -1

I got mine for $880 after cash back but inclusive of 3D camera (with ssd and better wifi). This one is $920 after cash back with no 3D camera.

  • site is down?

  • I don't know much about SSD. Will normal SSD fit in this laptop, or do I need m-Sata?

    • normal ssd will fit ( replacing the 1tb )

      • Thank you. With the Yoga deal, do you know if the m.2 SSD and HDD can be upgraded both?

  • Anybody know if this can take a 2nd drive? I googled but cannot find the info I want.

  • +6

I'll give the obligatory "spend the extra $17 on the upgraded 8260Ac wireless module. It'll save a lot of anger and time in the long run.

    • +1

Sorry I'm a computer noob. Are you able to explain the difference?

      • +2

Basically, it's faster and improved wireless technology.

        • Thank you

      • +1

As tranqme said. Also, I've found the 8260 to have far better stability and range compared to the 3165. Has 2x2 transmit/receive radios as opposed to the 1x1 on the 3165.

      • The 3165 is a single radio consumer/trash version, compared to the premium 8260 model

    • +1

Also make sure to customize your power profile and set wifi to be high performance on battery and pci express link state power management disabled if you want the max possible wifi speeds at the expense of some battery life.

  • +1

i must have pulled the short straw, sent my month old lenny to nsw last week for it to get repaired under w/ty. touchpad has issues and is not responsive
im sure this is a one-off and entirely not indicative of lenovo's build quality,,,, -shifty eyes-

    • +1

I can confirm I am also experiencing the same symptoms with my E460. Very intermittently the touchpad it will stop functioning, then randomly start again. Paid for on-site support and had this replaced, but the problem still persists (MB?). Also had poor wireless card performance (even with the upgraded Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260), and the screen was experiencing issues as well. I'm sure mine was probably in the minority of lemons, but I can't say I've had a pleasant experience.

      • +1

Did you turn it off and back on again?

      • Drivers, biod could be the problem, or the track pad was turning off due to USB power save mode, all maybes

And yes a fault board could be the reason, mirco fractures, bad solder job

        • Tried most up to date drivers from Lenovo support page. Also tried the older drivers that windows automatically installs upon clean re installing. NEither work
Re installed windows clean keeping no files. Doesnt work either

Honestly think there are faulty connections in touchpad.
Luckily for me, checked their website today for a status update, and it changed from FIRST INSPECTION to AWAITING PARTS. woo, i guess this means they're replacing the touchpad? hope this fixes my issue, but boy, awaiting parts sounds like at least another 2 weeks for shipment from the motherland of Lenny, China. and i'm plonked right in the deep end of a first year engineering degree. joy.

  • Is the graphics card any good for older games and likely
to make the laptop run hot?
Or better to get a laptop with integrated?

    • I believe there is a way to force what GPU is used when rendering, so you could have both worlds, also I believe the new ati drivers have same new power save modes, like a fps lock.

  • How fast would this arrive in Tasmania from time of order? Need it before the 1st April

    • It says ships in 1-2 weeks, so expect it after 14 days lol

    • +1

Oh they have the internet in Tas now? Neat!

    • Got the X1 on 24/02, said ships in 6 days. Arrived 17/03.

  • E560 would be nice for a home laptop, ta!

  • This laptop has the function key where the ctrl keys usually are. May take a little getting used to. Also, cheap feeling material.

    • You can swap the two keys around in BIOS, but it's still pretty annoying.

    • +1

You can swap that in the UEFI, at least at all Thinkpads I've seen so far.

  • Is there a dept store we can go and test out one of these machines? Would like to get a feel for how bulky or slim it is.

  • +7

Ensure you downgrade to Windows 10 Home Edition, then apply coupon TA-EDGE at checkout.

Downgraded OS on my current machine (took an hour, including backing up time) and was able to apply coupon code successfully.

    • Doh

  • +1

Really wish we could get a deal on one of the T460 tier ones… It's pretty much perfect but these ones have always felt a bit flimsy to me, I'm willing to pay a bit more but just not double the price :/

  • how's the graphic card on this thing? enough to play MOBAs or WoW?

    • It seems okay http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-R7-M360.142637.0.htm…

If you turn down the graphics settings on everything to low, you can potentially play a lot of the new games at 1920x1080 with 20-30 FPS

      • Bloody hell.. Intel Iris is better.

        • and unjustifiably expensive.

    • +1

HoTS is awfully optimized, its going to suck on everything

      LoL is easy to max

Dota is a CPU game, the graphic card doesn't make much of a difference

      WoW runs on everything.

  • +1

GTX950 or 960 then i'm in. IMO, Radeon especially the R5 and R7 are way too weak.

  • +3

Just gonna post my experience with Lenovo customer service, bought this for the same-ish price (when it was around $890) around late January-Early Feb.

Laptop arrived with headphone jack faulty, audio only playing through one side. Sent it in for repair TWICE and problem was not fixed, with Lenovo eventually asking me for video footage to prove it. Took about a two weeks calling between case managers, with Lenovo management eventually deciding to send me a replacement unit which will arrive in two weeks.

TLDR: Bought laptop over a month ago, still faulty despite two repairs, replacement coming in two weeks, hopefully it has no issues.

    • -6

I was just about to post a similar situation. It's been a month and I only just received the laptop this week. The screen is bleeding from two corners. Major bleeding, not small typical IPS screen bleeding. I called them up the day after, they said to reorder, then told me not to reorder the next day but to provide photos of proof and then they'll replace it. I just called them up and they said its not their departments problem and the girl I spoke to was new and I should call tech support for faulty products instead. Now they're just bouncing me between departments. I'm gonna just refund it and spend a little more on another brand. The amount of time they wasted wasn't worth the savings

      • +1

Sounds familiar. They suggested I send it in for repair for a 3rd time, but I was adamant on speaking to a case manager and avoiding the obviously in-capable repair company they use (QSL).

Im gutted i didnt refund and buy that $1320 asus zenbook (1080p touch, nvidia 940m, 256gb ssd etc etc).

        • Typical, we get negged even though it's within the guileless of negging a deal. The number of people within ozbargain suffering from faulty products warrants a neg. But nah, everyone likes TA.

  • Jeez I wish all new laptops just came with SSD (preferably M.2 NVM) as standard now. My ears would prick up a lot more when these specials come along.

5400RPM does not cut it any more when you're used to SSD. I'd even be happy with only 256Gb.

Such a shame they're still pushing those horrible HDDs.

    • +3

I almost prefer HDD because then you can be more selective about the SSD you put in. And you can do a fresh install without the crapware, which only takes an hour total with an SSD and good net connection for the drivers and updates. Then use the HDD for backup or as an emergency replacement if the SSD crashes.

      • Good point in a way I guess, just hate wasting $60-$80 or whatever they are and rather have that towards the cost of the SSD.

And M.2 NVM are MUCH faster than SATA drives and take up less room so we could have smaller devices or maybe more in them (dedicated GFX or Thunderbolt electronics).

I'd still also love to see (with the new bandwidth of Thunderbolt) and the fact it runs over USB Type C, docking stations with all the connectors we want AND a dedicated GFX card.

Small light to carry around, plug in when home for desktop replacement.

It just all seems to be taking so long. The technology is there.

Don't mind me I'm just very impatient :)

  • I think the other recent Renovo deal was better. Touch screen and all.

  • Man I wish there was a similar deal on a 15". I want to buy my wife a Lenovo but she NEEDS a full keyboard.

    • +1

There is a similar deal - $999. I got one and returned it. Horrible keyboard layout (invisible function keys, badly placed Fn key, useless keys in important areas), arrow keys were inserting numbers (some problem with the numlock key?), felt flimsy. Bland screen. Windows 10 was a pain with its compulsory random updating and other touch/tablet/phone OS annoyances, but now they have Win7 downgrade rights. Other than those problems, it's pretty good bang for buck if you swap out the HDD for an SSD. Delivery takes about 11 days to major cities.

      • +1

Similar experience, although I'm keeping mine. Arrow keys were inserting numbers, so numlock must always stay off. Delete key placed in bad position. Function key is in the bottom left corner, displacing the all-important left-ctrl. Shame, because the trackpad with discrete buttons is a great design. Screen suffers from some pretty bad backlight bleeding, although it's otherwise decent. The SSD it shipped with has good read speeds (~500MB/s), but the write speeds are awful for an SSD (160MB/s vs 100MB/s on a 5400rpm HDD).

To be fair, it has great specs for the price.

        • +1

Yes, mine had backlight bleeding too. Don't really notice that in use.

You having the same problem with the arrow keys means there's a lot of bad keyboards out there or a bad driver. My arrow keys were also slow. The cursor would hesitate in the document and then when you let go it jump a few places. Reinstalled the driver, but didn't help.

Also, the screen was horrible with underwater photos - bluish water turned green and everything looked muddy.

Surprisingly, the Dell Latitude business notebooks have similar keyboard layout. Seems more geared to kids (audio buttons for example) and elderly people (Explorer buttons for example), than for business. The e560 Fn key placed where the Ctrl key should be is unforgivable. I hit that about 50 times per day. Switching them in the bios is an awkward solution.

The Dell Inspirons have perfect keyboard layouts. But they are all HD instead of FHD. And some USB 2 ports instead of all USB 3, which slows things down. The e560 is all USB 3 which is another good thing about it.
