Broadlink RM2 Wi-Fi IR Blaster $32.47 Delivered ($24.64 USD) @ AliExpress

140

I found this in the Aliexpress daily super deals. It will be available at this price for another 4 hours or so.

I have 2 of these which I use to control my Fujitsu Aircon's from where ever. The app isn't too bad compared to most Chinese home automation products but if its not to your liking there is a fantastic third party app available for $6 on Android. I have a fair few broadlink products and have found the support from broadlink to be pretty good.

Here are a few links if you want to read reviews on this unit:

I haven't purchased from this particular store but the feedback looks reasonable.

  • Can you tell me in what applications have you used this device?

I've thought about using this to control the aircon before I get home, but then you're never sure that the aircon received the command, as the IR is only one way, you won't know the status of the aircon.

    • Thats what network webcams are for.

    • The included app won't give you any feedback but the third party app will tell you if the command has been sent successfully or not. With the third party app you can set the command to send a few times if you want to be sure. I have a solar system which lets me monitor my consumption remotely so I can see my usage go up when the aircon switches on. You can get a temp reading in the official app so you might be able to monitor it that way, its not perfect but its a cheap solution.

    • That looks the same as one that ALDI had last year. I use mine to open garage door, alarm, control all my AV with my phone. Works with RF too so I programmed in my RF power points. Just make sure you don't access the app at work and open your garage door remotely over 3/4G :P

      • I don't think this one has RF. Do you have a link to the Aldi one? I am curious to have a look.

        • Support: Support IR + RF controlled devices

          1. Support all IR controlled devices such as TV, Air condition, DVD and etc.
            1. Support 433MHz and 315MHz frequencies
        • @scubacoles: Thanks, I hadn't noticed that. I will have a play around.

      • May I know how do you program garage doors? Interested in this one.

  • Great for pranking your colleagues with the heatpumps.

    1. Just trying to get an idea of what i can use this for. Besides turning on the air con or garage door what other practical uses could it be used for? Could my smart phone replace all my remotes with the added functionality of being to be to turn things on away from home?

    2. I'm wondering how powerful the app is, can i customise it to fully control my amplifier/smart tv?

    EDIT:
Just found this on Amazon. Perhaps its not a good remote control replacement but good for turning on things when you're not at home or opening the garage door. I see some use in it for home security.

"If you're going to replace a bunch of hardware remotes with a single hub — don't waste your time and money. It's a cheap trinket for geeks with smart phones.
A typical process of controlling a, say, TV unit looks like this: Find phone, unlock phone, look for the app, tap, wait for the app to load, wait for the app to connect, find action, tap, wait… You must be really patient to enjoy this process, believe me. This is not the problem of this particular hub, it's common for all universal remote hubs."

    • 1.Just trying to get an idea of what i can use this for.

For controlling a device when you are not physically near it.

Could my smart phone replace all my remotes

Easily. However remote hub this is certainly not the correct way to do that.

This is not the problem of this particular hub, it's common for all universal remote hubs.

      Well, of course.

If you want to control a "non-remote" device (for example if you are in the same location as the device) then you would just control it directly.

    • I'm going to use mine to control the playback and volume on my outdoor speakers, while I'm outdoors…
At the moment, I need to
      1) remember to take the remote outdoors with me
      2) walk back inside to get the remote cause I invariably forget
      3) point the remote through the only window that has line of sight to my Amp
      4) Get up, find the remote and walk to the window to change input or skip a track
      5) remember to take the remote back indoors with me when I'm done
      6) Walk back outside to find the remote cause I invariably forget.

If you want to replace a bunch of remotes you need to pick up a Harmony.

      • The remote is your phone, so its harder to forget

  • I imagine something like this would not be all that hard to build with a rpi and if you have the time/knowledge sounds like you could through together an interface that might be a bit quicker then the apparently clumsy app.

  • came with Chinese documentation only.
