  • gezzz.. the hotels prices overthere are like aud 300+ /night

    • Yeah its not cheap, but I must say, once you get there you realise why you pay that much. Certainly not an budget getaway.

  • they are that good.

  • -1

Just went to Hamilton Island in early Feb. Spent $2,800 in 3 nights on me and my girlfriend. Went on an overnight cruise, scuba diving, snorkeling and quad biking. Stayed at the cheaper hotels but managed to get cheap stay because we took a gamble and waited for last minute deals. I dont regret spending so much. Best holiday I've ever had. And 3 nights was NOT enough. So much free things to do and see that we didnt get a chance to enjoy.

    • wow 2800 can fly me (jetstar) to japan and stay there for 2 weeks (alone)
anyway, for the hotel: how much did you pay, which hotel and from what website did you booked (last minutes deals)

      Thanks

  • Haha yeh I am aware that I could've had a longer holiday elsewhere. But seeing the great barrier reef tickled my fancy more than going elsewhere. I stayed at the Reef View (coral sea view room) at approx $260 a night from memory. We didn't use any website. Rather we called up the hotel 1-2 days prior to our arrival and asked if they had any cheaper rooms for the next few days. We only heard this was possible because the lady who booked our overnight cruise suggested it. Here's a rough breakdown of how I spent my money, hope this helps you (and keep in mind this was for 2):

Overnight cruise incl. scuba and snorkeling with Fantasea (HIGHLY recommended) - $1000
flights and insurance incl return to Syd - $500
Accomodation at Reef View - $500
    Quad Biking - $300
Food, souvenirs and miscellaneous - $500

    • thanks will think about this later ~ yup you did get good deal for the room, normal price is $360

  • Zhenjie is right, once you're there, you will appreciate the value of the expensive rate on Hamilton Island compared to Cairns or Port Douglas.

The standby rate is a common practice in that region, but like wonga said, it's a gamble, the rate can be go sky rocket at last minute if they are running at a high occupancy.

Just come back from Hamilton Island last week, the cyclone didn't damage the island at all, though the water is murky due to that, wasn't ideal for snorkelling.

  • I went during the valentines weekend and that should indicate their rate of occupancy during their wet season =]

  • Just searched adioso and it looks like theres a fairly limited amount of virgin flights going there for $99 from Sydney. Might be worth checking it out.
