  • Nice! Anyone know what model HDD is in these… 'Archive' or 'NAS' I wonder?

EDIT: Doh! Sorry, a two second Google search revealed it's an 'Archive' model: http://www.storagereview.com/seagate_backup_plus_external_ha… Not as cheap as buying the raw drive through Kogan last week but still a great price for mega storage.

This teardown reveals it as well. Wish they wouldn't sell SMR drives without some sort of disclosure.

    Waiting for the usual comments…

    is this a portable drive….
    does it require power….
can it be used in an xbox….
will this fit in a notebook….
does it have warranty in Australia….
I paid $288 for this after using the Amazon Converter or my crappy credit card charge so the post is wrong….

    • You should get closer to the ~A$279 quoted if you pay Amazon in USD and used a fee free card like the 28 degress Mastercard.

    • Except this time, the warranty question should be yes. With Sydney return address, replacement sent via Singapore.

It has been a long time since I had a Seagate warranty claim, so might have changed?

To think that I paid only a bit less a few years ago for a 5TB Seagate. Disappointing, but at least it's cheap.

  • @lyl, whose profile pic did you use today? ;)

I've used an original profile pic, totally doesn't look like anyone elses ;)

  • Great price. Has anyone used these in a NAS and can comment on reliability? It's pretty cheap and ~$1120 for 4x8TB sounds like an amazing deal.

Used a single 8TB Arhive HDD in a mini-NAS I built up for a friend last year. Been working perfectly and he's now considering getting a second to mirror for redundancy. I have heard others report of failures but not enough to stop me grabbing three during the Kogan sale last week :) Just under $250 a pop delivered however there weren't enough in stock to make it deal-worthy so I could only comment on it in the original Kogan thread.

      • Thanks. I've got a Synology 4 bay NAS so what are your thoughts on running 4 of these archive drives in a RAID 5 array?

        • I wouldn't run them in anything more than a mirror. The rebuild times are horrendously long. I have 2 mirror sets in my Synology DS1813 and they work great.

As an exercise when I first got them I deliberately broke a 4 drive SHR-1 set to see how long a rebuild would take. After 2 days it was at 15%…..it's a combination of the SMR drives and the fact that its a crapload of data for the unit itself to rebuild. Even if they were PMR drives I'd be wary of having that much data in just a raid 5 set - rebuild times are going to be very long and your drives are probably never stressed more than during that.

      • I bought one of these and it died after two days. Seagate was really helpful and emailed me a postage paid slip, and sent me a new drive. Total process was approximately a week. The new unit has been rock solid.

Currently I write about 4-8gb of backup files to it each night. It works well in this manner, as extremely large file transfers are quite slow compared to traditional drives.

A useful hint for those who use Linux, is to use Linux kernel 4.4 or above, which comes with a number of fixes for these drives.

  • Just give me fibre to the premises so the internet can be my hard drive. Can't be bothered with storage anymore, just deleting and re-downloading as required.
