Don't forget, because this is a Amazon Kindle device that was marketed towards American users with wide availability to the internet and Amazon Cloud services, it eschews an SD card slot, so you're stuck with the onboard 16gb storage.

    Specifications from Wikipedia
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_HD

    • Actually, thanks for reminding me. Was just about to buy one but no sd slot makes it a non deal.

How do people think no expandable storage is a good idea. It means you will be forced to replace your product in a few years.

      • Eh, just look at the iPad, xiaomi mipad and so on. There are plenty of flaghship phones and tabs out there with no SD slot.

For those wondering what this variant is, this is the 2014 version running the big.LITTLE Mediatek processor.

Sure, these products can be successful. I mean the nexus series is infamous for it too. But it's a hallmark of our expectations now days. We buy a phone and generally expect to replace it every two years. It's nothing like the old attitude where people used to expect things to last for many years to come.

  • Is this the Amazon customised version of Android 4.4?

I see nothing to indicate they have they hacked it to run Cyanogenmod.
Is there any other android version available for Kindle Fire?

But it does seem to be the 2012 version, with a vulnerable bootloader.
I have the 9" version, and its still good with Cyanogenmod.
Would not want to bother with the trouble to mod this one now.

    • Looking again, its the 2013 version, so you are stuck with Amazon's bastardised version of Android.
      No Google Play Store.

      See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_HD#Models

Michael15286, what makes you think it is 4th gen?

      • If its the 4th gen is that a good thing in relations to changing OS?

        • +1

I think it is the 3rd gen, reflashed to fire-os 4, same OS as 4th gen, so no software difference.
You can side-load play store, but i'm not sure how well it works.

Difference would be just a new SoC, presumably faster.

        • @manic: ook

You reckon it's worth getting this tablet?

        • @GameChanger:
Not if you want play store.
          Otherwise its a bargain.

        • @manic: I don't have android devices; assume playstore is akin to Apple App Store? So not able to download apps?

      • I compared the description of the product listed on IWOOT to this wikipedia list of specifications of the Kindle HD series. The 3rd generation is a dual core while this is clearly described as a quad core. Also it couldn't be the 5th generation since the site description specified a single band wifi chip rather than a double band one the 5th gen has.

If the description on IWOOT was accurate it definitely is the 4th gen Kindle Fire HD.

  • Did a bit of reading and it turns out to be the Kindle Fire HD 7 4th Generation (2014). $66 isn't too bad for a 2 year old tablet

  • The price has increased to $45 pounds

  • I've decided that this was actually a good bargain, just not for me.

  • Missed it :-(

Any other good tablets within similar price range?

  • Anyone have thoughts/recommendations on a cheap tablet for comics? (7-9" and preferably decent screen spec)

    • For comics I highly recommend a full 10.1 inch display. Better if it has 1080p but isn't terrible with 1280 * 800.

Should be plenty of cheap Chinese tablets like Cube or Teclast that fit the bill.

For a locally sourced option try the Samsung Galaxy tab A from Target, but the display resolution is very poor (1024 x 768). Might be ok if your comics are of very low quality or small image size.

      • Cheers I will look into Teclast some more
