Personally, I find these W Series cameras are frustratingly low-spec'd.

The poor optical zoom really limits their use for most people.

The 720p video is an utter joke in 2016 (although better than the video on my older model W Series).

Yeah, it's a Sony but it ain't a very good one.

      But for $69……..

    • does it take photos?

      • They all take photos LOL. But a Photo is not a photo.

For years I've used my old W series as the main "Ebay Product Photos" camera. Mine has the Carl Zeiss lens and far better colour quality than my other cameras. Resolution is not an issue - ebay images are maximum 1800 Pixels wide anyway.

The way that the Zeiss lens is configured seems to give awesome results - perhaps not folded as many times as Ultra-Zooms? I think mine is only 5Mpx but it gives much better shots than 12 and 16 pixel jobbies (especially in low light).

The main disadvantage of a small zoom is that you need to move the camera to get close-ups and macro shots, which is a PITA when you use a tripod. The W Series cannot really even get close enough to small item on a table when tripod mounted.

So recently I've started using a Panasonic 16Mpx with 20x Zoom. The overall image "quality" is not as good, so it needs more processing and editing, but the ability to jump 16x then crop means that the camera can stay on the tripod.nbut th, since the W Series are wide angle with very low optical zoom.

Camera for 69 is interesting hihi 🙈🙄🙈😳😜

  • Would this work as a non-extreme gopro? What is the widest angle it handles?

Compacts are finished, just use your mobile phone, piss easy to sms the photo too

Try using an rx100 and then you'll change your tune. They are considerably more expensive though!

      • This precisely. Sensors are much bigger in many compacts, allows for much better low light performance. No matter how 'convenient' it is to have a phone on you at all times, there's no arguing that compacts offer better quality due to the larger sensor - as M4/3 is to FF.

Not only in low light but much higher IQ and achieving a shallow depth of field. Megapixels do't mean much if your image is noisy and has distortion at the edges due to average glass/ tiny sensors found in smartphones. Having optical zoom is a significant advantage for most compacts.

Not to say smartphones aren't serviceable, but if you want shots that you can blow up or display on a large monitor or screen I would get a high end compact imo. I use a Sony Z2 phone for day to day shots but it pales in comparison to using an rx100m3 and using NFC to shoot the photos over.

Agree, i am not a power photographer by any stretch. I will almost always already have my phone with me, if I buy a camera it will be one more thing that i will have to carry around with me and potentially lose. I get it that the picture might be of a higher resolution etc but realistically, most of my photos are awkward photos of somebody's head with something interesting in the background so a phone camera is probably ok.

If you go kayaking for example, or go sight seeing while traveling etc, a lightweight proper camera is nice to have. But for everything else, phones are good. We just got back from a 5 day road trip, a camera would have had its use.

I got back a month ago from skiing in France & Italy, iphone in the pocket of my ski jacket was plenty enough. I used to carry a camera as well but why carry 2 devices when I only need to carry 1.

        • @2ndeffort: Becvause even the best phone cams in the most common phones have pretty ordinary camera bits. Its nice some get a lens, others a better cmos etc, but none get it all that I know of. Sure the pictures are OK, but a decent (not the one in the OP) pocket camera will kick its arse.

Let the wife carry it or the phone, or both.

        • @2ndeffort: And I'd prefer to preserve my phone's battery as long as possible when travelling longer. Yeah, you can carry powerbank, but then it defeats the purpose of having to "carry one", isn't it?

      • I think for compacts there is only two directions

Either you make them high-end and high quality like the Rx-100

or you make them special so they differ from mobiles eg. like GoPro (good for action etc and tons of accessories), HTC re (small enough, water resistant and works with phones) or durable like the Olympus line which is water resistant, shock resistant etc

because mobile phones these days are quite serviceable for everyday photo purposes (if you have a decent one) and many photos are just for the fun of it and never gets looked at much or printed out.

  • 1080p video and I am sold… No deal :P
