If, like me, you are asking what are the differences between this ML10 and a HP MicroServer Gen8, this forum thread is helpful.

  • +1

This machine has a lot of life left in it… s1150 means you can use a heap of decent cpus. It also uses plain ddr3. The x8 video slot isnt the best but it should be fine for even heavy-ish gaming. Will probably buy this given I spend more on video cards.

    Discount for pickup?

    • +1

I own one of these. It replaced a N54L as my main server running Windows Server 2012 R2.
      More than happy with it,
Not sure your comment re the "plain ddr3" is correct. I think it requires ECC RAM like the Gen8 microserver. Do you have a reference otherwise or have you got some non-ECC working in a ML10v2.

This price from PC Lan is a great price though, $60 less than the previous best I have seen and what I purchased.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/234755

      • Is your server used for home or business use?

    • +2

The 300W power supply would have to be replaced if you were to use a heavy-ish gaming video card . You would have to check whether this even has the extra 6/8 pin power connectors required by higher end video cards .

  • HP Microservers NAS have improved a lot. The processor in this machine is more efficient and powerful than my current processor in main working machine (Intel Core2 quad Q9300 2.5ghz)

  • +4

    +2% handling fee apparently

  • Great Price for all-purpose PC. Add your own GPU for a gaming PC!

    • You would probably need to replace the PSU and RAM if you were going to use it for gaming.

I've been collecting the old win 7 PCS from hard waste day and upgrading to win 10 ….grab the license key from the sticker …..same at the good guys dumptser. ..haven't been told to move on yet…they have pc recycling bin….more success with lap tops than desktops at good guys.

    • But then you have Windows 10…

      Why?

      • you can upgrade to windows 10 for free for win 7,8 and 8.1 till june 2016

Got a spare one handy? :)

      • me too! interested in a spare code

Wow awesome price. I paid about 230 for mine from these guys through an eBay sale.

This server is awesome - very expandable and reliable.

Few Questions about this as I am considering using it as a Media Centre for my lounge.
      1. Is it noisy?
      2. Is it well ventilated? I have concerns with overheating of the drives (I will install my current 7200RPM drives; 2 x 5TB and 2 x 3TB)
      3. Are the 4 x 3.5in LFF HDD bays internal or included in the 5.25 external bays?
      4. ECC or NON-ECC memory?
      5. Suggestion on Media Centre Software? I am thinking Win7Pro and KODI/Plex/Media Portal?
      * I Want the best display interface for my Movies/Photos and Music.

      Thanks in Advance.

      • Good questions.

I'd like to add if someone has some experience with:
        -rough Power consumption measurements
-What CPUs/price has someone swapped out in these?

      • +1

Seems too noisy from Amazon reviews:

        Cons :
        * The fan.
        * The fan.
        * The annoyingly loud case fan is the only fan in the server and is temperature controlled by the inlet air ambient temperature. At anything above 28*C ambient temperature, it is exceedingly loud and I would not recommend this server for anything but a temperature controlled office. Here in the tropics the unit sounds like a hair-dryer in my room. I will be changing the fan (not an easy process as the connector is non-standard) for a 92mm Noctua PWM unit.

Verdict : Great performance / dollar but held back by the poor cooling design decisions made by HP.

          poor cooling design decision

Pal it's a commercial grade server, the fans are supposed to be like jet engines.

        • @LoopyLou: You can replace fans with more quieter fans

        • @LoopyLou:

          commercial grade server

          Really, at $200?

      • +4

        (1) As others have said - the fan can be noisy depending on ambient temperature. Sometimes I don't notice it's on, but when it spins up it can get noisy.

To be honest, even a N40L/N54L has enough fan noise that I would locate it away from my TV.

I use mine purely as a server, and have a client HTPC (Intel NUC) connected to my TV pulling media off the server.

Alternatively you could run an HDMI extender over CAT5/6 solution if you were set on using the server as the primary HTPC.

        (2) I believe it's well ventilated - it's got a lot of internal space. It occupies a significantly larger footprint than the N54L.

        (3) There is a metal drive 'cage' that you unscrew and pull out from the front of the unit. There you can screw in four 3.5" HDDs. You then re-insert the cage, and reconnect the SATA/power cables.

There is additional space above the cage for the two 5.25 external bays. It comes with the molex power cables provisioned for the 5.25 bays, but you need to get your own SATA cables if you want to connect an additional two HDDs.

        (4) ECC memory. But unregistered.

        (5) I run Windows 10 on my machine. I use Kodi on my HTPC. Love it. Very easy to get up and running.

Keep in mind that this is a proper server - the boot POST process takes a fair while, so ideally it's a machine that you'd keep on 24/7.

On the other hand, you get access to HP iLO (integrated lights out) management software. This means you can remotely manage your server, EVEN if it's off. You can have a remote desktop window watching the whole boot POST process, and load/attach virtual media/drives through the remote desktop interface. Very handy.

        • @atlas
Do you still have to buy an iLO license to make is useable, or does it come with an advanced license?

        • @tyrotex: Not sure to be honest - I installed my license straight away. You can find the license on eBay for about $20 - a no brainer really!

        • +1

@tyrotex: There was an unlimited iLO license posted to reddit months ago, have a google..

        • +1

You can use brackets like these http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MM52T35/ to handle 2x 3.5 Drives per each 5.25 bay, these is what i use in my N36L to handle 7 drives.
So you should be able to add 8+ 3.5 drives in these units, as might be able to add some more drives to the empty space at the bottom of unit

        • @asa79: To do that I assume then you need to install another controller as there are only 6 sata ports?

        • @atlas: I installed PCI sata controller

      • Worst choice ever for a Media PC.

        It's a file server.

  • Is it worth upgrading a N40L with no issues to this device?

Currently running Windows Home Server 2011 w/Twonky and Kodi. 8GB Non-ECC RAM.

    • +1

It depends on it's intended purpose.

If you're currently using your MicroServer as a HTPC I wouldn't bother as the ML10V2 isn't the quietest setup, if you're wanting to upgrade to a more powerful server for expand-ability reasons, then sure.

    • +1

      This was my exact scenario.

Running out of space on my N40L, so bought the ML10V2.

Will relegate the N40L to weekly backups.

      • How many drives did you fit in?

        • I've only put four 8tb drives plus an ssd thus far.

  • +1

How would this compare to a N54L? I've found the CPU a little lacking on the N54L with some video playback.

    • Add a graphics card?

      • I have a HD6450 installed in it, but sometimes 1080p mkv files seem to lag.

        • What CPU are you running?

        • +1

@tranqme: The N54L has a AMD Turion II Model Neo dual-core @ 2.2GHz, which I believe is not upgradeable

        • +2

          @alex1019:

          Hmm fair enough.

Personally, I would turn the server into a Plex box and stream over the network to a Raspberry-Pi or similar dedicated kodi device.

  • +1

How would this go as a plex server?

    • Great.

    • .. and could it be a Plex Media Player as well with a GPU added?

Does Plex have good GPU-offload support?

  • strange - warehouse1 sells the same SKU for the same price but advertises a 1TB HDD installed

EDIT: looks like they dun goofed the product title

    • Could be correct. HP might be dumping the product due to a new model coming.

      • +1

        New model already announced.
        http://www.servethehome.com/new-hpe-proliant-ml10-gen9-low-c…

Would expect these (the g8) to go on sale at most of 'the usual' outlets soon.

Doesn't seem to be a significant upgrade, possibly a downgrade in some aspects. Especially if you're after the base model.

        • +3

          No iLO - big downgrade!

        • @atlas: Yep, no iLO no go on the ML10 Gen9 so bought one of these. Thanks OP.

    • +2

I just called and spoke to 'Jack' who confirmed there is a 1Tb drive with it. He couldnt confirm model number or any details though :)

I took the plunge and brought through PayPal

EDIT/UPDATE: I just got this email as per below

      Hi Sunny,

I believe we spoke earlier regarding this one, my Manager has informed me the information displayed is incorrect and this product ordered doesn’t include a 1TB HDD.

Please advise if you’d like to go ahead with the order or alternately we could arrange a refund.

      • I believe this one for $269 comes with 1TB HD

  • Would one of these be suitable to run security cameras through as recorder?

  • thanks op, bought one

  • +3

    avoid warehouse1 - terrible service.

    • +2

Clearly based on the comment above. Don't even know their stock!

  • Very tempted to upgrade my N54L, how many HDD max can you put in this unit with modding?

I got 5 SATA drives +1 SSD for the OS in the N54L, but looking at the specs for this unit it only reads 4 HDD's?

    • +2

6 hdd. 4x via cage, 2x via 2 onboard sata

these are better value and more options than the gen8 micosrv.

u can easily mod.. eg fans for quiet operation. But u need a lil modding skills so not to trip sensors etc…

      • Can you elaborate on that last part about tripping sensors/why its tricky to replace fan with quieter one?

        • Non standard pin out but it's pretty easy to swap them over to the correct slots…

        • @wisc: …..confused!~

        • @Xizor: hey zizor, that was what was so difficult about changing the fan over for example on a normal fan pin 1 could be 5v, pin 2 could be speed, pin 3 could be ground… On the hp, pin 1 could be speed sense etc… So you need to remove the plug and change the pin order…

Unsure about tripping the sensor… I know you have a case intrusion sensor switch on some cases… But that's just a counter.

        • +1

@wisc: I think he means the fan speed sensor. If you don't do the pins correctly the system will assume the fan is 0rpm and trip an alarm.

        • @Agret: Cheers…. sounds like i'll just pass on this and wait for a more brain dead appropriate option.

        • @Xizor: you don't have to change the fan… Some people like to do it to make it quieter.

        • @wisc: Yeah i know, thanks man… that is me though haha, if i cant just use any old quiet fan to swap without any stuffing about then i just cbf with it. Will wait for something else.

      • +1

sorry.. yes. if the pinouts aren't correct you'll get some sort of a fan failure alert when it cannot sense any speed.

Alternatively without any real modding, you can just add a silent noctua fan so u can help push some air thru the cpus heatsink. THis somewhat tames the temperature to keep the HPs' Delta fan from going full throttle.

  • Is it good for Home NAS?

  • Maximum drives you can put into one of these ? Going to replace my 2 x N36L ZFS boxes which currently have 6 drives in each. Looks like 8 would be a go with 4 in the standard bay and 2 in each of the 5.25" bays ?

    • According to this post the limit is 6

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/3618295/redir

      • +1

technically if u can find the appropriate Small form factor backplane + Cage that can take 8 drives (2.5"), then add a pcie Raid COntroller.. you can have more. But its cost prohibitive and hard to source. fyi though many of the HP Proliant ML310e Gen8 v2 parts may fit the ML10v2. THe Ml310e gen8v2 is the next step up.

      • -1

If you added a different HBA then you could get 8 in with 2 of these fitted - http://www.frozencpu.com/products/15856/hdc-93/Akust_525_Bay… - , all 3.5" disks. Just thought there might be a more elegant way to do it.

  • hi gents,

sorry dor the noob questions below, much thankfull if someone can kindly advise me.

i am new to this server stuff and dont have an experience setting up one.

    1) is it hard to set up?
    2) i am a photographer, and would like to use it as a server for all my photos for my client plus would like to use this as a home media unit. is this possible?
    3) i understand it can fit at least 4 hdd, but due to budget, i would prefer to upgrade bit by bit slowly. can this unit run with only 1 hdd? and i might add another hdd feom time to time?
    4) i am a general mac user, not a techie with linux and any server OS. i assume the easiest is to install the windows server OS? that means i need to purchase the software? or should i use a freenas? or something free and user friendly OS?
    5) in order to run this unit, other than hdd, what other hard ware do i need to purchased? ram? graphic card? router?
    6) any advise which site is good for me to learn a bit more of this?

Thank you , and do appreciate your time to response thank you

    • +1

      1) If you know how to set up a Windows computer, broadly speaking, you would know how to set this up
      2) Through Windows File Shares, yes
      3) Yes
      4) For your needs you may not need a Server OS. FreeNAS would work well but it can be complicated(ish) to set up
      5) It has RAM. Just a HDD.
      6) No idea :(

    • +1

For 6, YouTube is usually a good start. I learnt most of my computer knowledge from simply watching videos about different IT related things I wanted to do.

To sum up the rest, this server only needs harddrives and it'll be ready to go. It only needs one drive to run. Adding extra drives is fine, you simply instll them as you buy them. Setting it up may be a little complex, though watching a few YouTube videos will make the process quite easy. I'd also recommend FreeNAS as well btw.

  • Very tempted as i would like to stop using a hotway external box for 5HDD's but am worried about the noise of this…. ??

    • +1

Well unlike a HDD caddy, you can place this anywhere you have network access.

      • Unfortunately, in terms of cabled access…. that's pretty much the same spot.

  • +2

Minor hijack - does anyone who bought a N40L from a couple of years ago have updated BIOS file somewhere? HP website no longer provides it and so onboard GB LAN always says it is unplugged under Windows 8 and Windows 10.

  • Anyone got a source for ozbargain priced unregistered ECC ram? Looking for probably another 4GB since I'm going to be running WHS2011 which only supports 8GB.

Which leads me to me next question.

Is anyone running WHS2011 on one of these? Any issues? HP has drivers for SBS2011 so I'm guessing it will be ok.

    • Cheapest was Amazon for 16gb Crucial kits, but they no longer seem to ship to Australia.

Next cheapest was futu_online combined with an eBay sale.

But if you're only after 4gb, you may be able to find pieces offloaded by other owners.

  • Is this "better" as a NAS than the HP Microserver G1610T? I currently own an older N36L and N40L but the PSU on the N36L died recently and buying a replacement PSU is just too costly (>$100 I think?) so I am thinking perhaps I might be better off replacing the whole box.

  • Many thanks. Grabbed a few.

  • Ugly as sin

    • Servers aren't made to be out next to TV

      • Doesn't mean they need to be devoid of design.

        • Why would they put effort into design if they are only going to be looked at during installation?

        • @test34forone: They've put some effort in, it's just that the design is shit. Wtf is the deal with those ugly slotted holes all over the front of it? I wonder if it has filters or if it's just going to suck a whole bunch of dust through it. A more conservative or conventional design would have been way better than that eyesore.

        • Design is in performance, features and value rather than looks.

        • @Juddy: Filters are not a good idea for servers as they often get left for many years without being shutdown due to 24/7 deployment. Once the filters block then you have no airflow then overheating can occur. You will notice this design does not have a cpu fan as such but a powerful case fan that drags the air over the cpu heatsink. That is good design for servers.

        • @shane_au: The same argument goes for dust accumulating over the same period because of no filtration, especially in the fins of heat sinks or the fins and motor of the exhaust fan. Filters are usually way easier to remove and clean than it is to dismantle & clean the whole system, creating down time.

Poor maintenance is a bad idea any way you cut it.

        • +1

@Juddy: Well you sound like you know what your talking about here. Maybe you should head over to the hp forums and enlighten them on how to build cooling systems for servers.

  • This does hardware raid 5 with its controller ?
