  • I'm looking for a new gaming laptop. Is the 965m to 970m upgrade worth the extra money? Any thoughts?

    • +3

Looking at this deal i would say it all depends on your size need. The 970 is more powerful than the 965 and it worth paying extra money on it. But If 17 is too big and 14 is too small then you dont have much option. I like the specs of the 14 and at that price i believe its a good deal :)

      • yes, that's the hesitation here. I would prefer the 15 970 model.

    • +4

The 970M is a big improvement in performance, roughly 30% better in most benchmarks.

    • why not build a vidock

    • I just read a few of the other comments here and to be honest it's a tough one to answer. Since all 3 laptops are different sizes I think go for the one with the size that suits you best.

Normally I get asked between the GTX970M and GTX980M and my response is save your money and go for the GTX970M as the extra $450 for the GTX980M (double the price of the GTX970M) offers a FPS jump by only 25-30%.

The 14" P640RE doesn't have a full size keyboard, and the screen panel is TN. However RAM is DDR4 2133MHz.
The N150RF and N170RF have a full size keyboard with Numpad on right, Screen is IPS on the N150RF, TN panel on the N170RF, but RAM is only DDR3 1600MHz.

Other than that the specs are very similar.
Yes the GTX970M will offer better gaming performance and if the laptop is mainly for gaming then (in my opinion) go for the P640RE. Plus it's smaller, lighter and easier to carry around.

      Cheers

Customer service for these guys is excellent, would recommend buying off them. Very helpful and prompt, kept me updated on the progress of my order.
My metabox is awesome too and still going strong after almost two years.

    • Fantastic, cheers for the kind words. This business is my whole world so I want it to succeed.
It puts a smile on my face when I hear that customers are happy :)

I can vouch for that. I purchased an MSI gaming notebook from them in the past & can't speak highly enough of the customer service.

@Kong Computers any chance for a P650RE promotion in the near future?

    • We just finished one of these. So we don't have a P650 deal at the moment, sorry.
Send me a PM and I'll see what I can do :)

  • I only checked out the P640RE but the quoted price includes neither HDD nor SSD so you have no storage at all. You have to add around $100 to the price to allow for this. This price also excludes Operating System (+$140). So you're looking at least $140 extra on top of the quoted prices.

    Adding Windows 10 Home ($140) & a 500GB HDD ($99) brings the $1549 "bargain" to $1787.00 (total 1837 minus the $50 OZB discount)

Not quite as good a deal as I thought while reading the OP post.

Hi Agret, Yes that's correct. Thanks for offering me the chance to explain all this. The headline character space is too short (when uploading the deal) so I mention this in the first line of the description - "BYO Windows OS and/or HDD/SSD, or select from the menu options on the right".

Metabox laptops are renowned for being extremely flexible when it comes to upgrading. A lot of customers like how you can customise the laptop exactly to have what they want and not pay for features that they may already have in an older laptop that they want to transfer over to the new one. The main two items are Windows and storage, So we start off without these and the customer can pick and choose what they want.
This is the same as the Metabox website.

A lot of students can get Windows for +$69 or (some have told me) free.
Other customers prefer to swap their existing storage over or say they can buy cheaper online elsewhere and install themselves. You don't void the warranty if you open the back of the laptop up and upgrade the RAM, Storage or Wi-Fi card.
Metabox also provide support for laptops that aren't bought with an Operating System too. So if you install yourself and have difficulties then Metabox will be there to help out. Just email us or Metabox direct :)

      Cheers

Yes that is true, if you are a university student you can get Windows free. I received many free licenses from my uni (Deakin) because I was studying an IT related course I had access to Dreamspark Premium. Other students are eligible for the free Dreamspark which lets you download Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition which with some effort can have desktop services installed and setup for use as a desktop operating system.

I think swapping over existing storage from an old laptop is a great idea as long as you customize your metabox to add an M.2 SSD as your boot drive. This way you can still benefit from the extra 500GB/1TB you had in old laptop and have a nice fast computer running off your 120/250GB SSD.

I appreciate your thorough reply as the flexibility certainly is a good thing :) Just if you don't have access to these (or want to have it for business use which student licensing is technically not legal for this) or want to continue using your old laptop then the deal isn't as attractive as it immediately appeared.

  • Dammit I just missed this deal, any chance you will be doing something like this again?

    • Hi petematmcc,
We currently have this deal on the P640RE, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/246351
It is better than the one here. You get a free 120GB SSD instead of $50 off.
      Kris

    • Hi Again petematmcc,
I just tried sending you a PM but your message bank isn't activated.
Could you send me a PM and we'll organise that deal for you.
      Cheers
      Kris

      • I think I sent one though, hopefully you have it

        • Yep, I just saw it and replied.
          Cheers
          Kris
