  • Good offer if you don't use it to watch movie. Gear VR resolution is pretty bad.

    • +3

Doesn't it just use the phone as the screen though? E.g 1440x2560 for a gs7.

      • From reviews I've seen, people were talking about how higher resolution would be better. You do have to bear in mind that the image you are seeing is using half the screen each (for each of your eyes).

I did try one out in Korea at one of thoes event booth. It was S6 version, but it wouldn't be much different in terms of resolution. It may have been because of my glasses and my eyesight, but it did feel slightly blurry (though, I really didn't have the chance to adjust it properly so that may be the reason).

      • +6

Yeah, but only a small piece for each eye, the screen door effect is bad. Great device though, works really really well.

      • +2

Honestly I've never used a VR headset myself… But I just can't see resolution being a problem with these. The HTC vive, which is the highest rated (and most expensive) VR system that's readily available has a resolution of 2160x1200, less than the resolution of a gs7.

        • +3

The Galaxy is pentile though, so subsequently has a third less subpixels than the equivalent resolution in an RGB stripe LCD panel.

        • +2

Found a reddit thread on it.
          https://www.reddit.com/r/GearVR/comments/3yta3g/why_do_peopl…

I think this sums it all up, in a way.

"I can still see pixels. Therefore, the resolution is too low."

It's not comparative or anything like that, I think many people feel that 2K resolution is low for something that you stick right up your face.

        • +2

          @Oversimplified:

Interesting, I guess I'd have to try one out and see. Holding my G4 up to my eyes as close as possible I can't see individual pixels lol.

        • @Oversimplified:

Its true, these things are useless. All you can see is pixel city

        • Mate i can tell you from personal experience it's okay for a little bit. there's some limited (way overpriced) content available and it's a cool little gimmick you'll enjoy for a couple of weeks but I haven't used mine in about a month now.
This is new tech, kinda, but in the next few generations it'll start to get really good.

The screen door effect is… significantly noticeable most of the time.

        • @brad1601: Hold it up to your eyes and look at it through a magnifying glass … thats whats happening withe the Gear VR. I've got one and its great fun for games, dont use it for movies though

        • +1

          @brad1601:

          That's not how it works.

There are big-ass lens in front of each eye, that use the two halves of the screens and then magnify it substantially. Thus the screen door effect.

I have a GearVR. Pretty cool with games… but content of a…ahem rather 'sinful nature' is where it blew my mind. :P

        • I have tested both, Vive is the clear winner

        • Side note, HTC Vive uses THE EXACTLY SAME SAMSUNG DISPLAY as Gear VR.

          https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/HTC+Vive+Teardown/62213

Anyone who says Gear VR is pentile thus HTC is better is a clueless moron.

      • Own one.
Divide the resolution of the GS7 by two and minus the pixels it has to keep black to display picture. Overall res of like maybe 800x600/1024x768 per eye.

Cheapest S7 Edge that meets requirements/can be price beat at Orifaceworks ?

  • +1

Oh it's only valid for people who bought the phone today (and onwards). I didn't notice.
    Disappointing.

  • +5

Thanks for the heads up was just about to put in an order for Samsung S7 later this week so this comes in handy !

redeeming $450 of jb hihi Ecard gift vounchers from Qantas Frequent Flyer points so saves me some $$$ already 1149-450 = $699 for S7 and now this promo - sweet !

  • Mmm nice if you're gonna grab the Sammy anyhow.

Apparently this is really the only "add a phone" VR solution that works "decently" due to GearVR having specialised motion sensors that came about as a result of working with Occulus. Although it's still no replacement for Rift/Vive/PS by any stretch of the imagination.

  • what about if people get the phone on a plan? would they still be able to claim?

    • +1

I'd assume yes based off this: "Copy of your original proof of purchase (tax invoice or copy of contract)"

  • +9

I was using mine on the train on the way to work and had my bag stolen from next to me… On the way home I missed my stop.. It was a bad day…

    • +2

      Because you looked like this?

    • +1

      ROFL.

I could not put this on in a public setting let alone if I had other property that wasn't attached to me.

  • +3

Ah yes, now all of us who purchased or signed a contract (like me) after launch but before today are going to be mildly annoyed.

Then we realize how little we would have likely used it in order to cope.

    • +1

Thats not the OzB way of thinking! I would be quite annoyed at this, and would shoot them an email about 'supporting early adopters' of the S7 as well.

      • But not early enough for not pre-ordering? :P

Just kidding :) But yeah, I'd try email them - or perhaps a specific marketting team email addresss if you can find one rather than the usual customer service bin.

And yeah, I'm afraid to say, its actually a pretty cool toy. The games are overpriced as others have mentioned but some of them are a good few hours of fun and some of the 3D film content is pretty good.

  • Would this be applicable if I were to get Galaxy S7 on a plan with Telstra or Vodafone?

  • Bought the S7 edge on the 29th of April FML. (Thanks anyway OP)

    • Yeah me too with the eBay deal…..very annoyed and it still hasn't arrived due to arrive may 5…. so I wonder what the odds are of bing Lee changing the date on the tax invoice?

  • +2

Got my S7 edge today, thanks for posting.

    • +1

      Same. Cheering.
Signed new deal with telstra via cashrewards for a $150 cashback and then found this!

      Thanks poster

      • Is cashback just on personal plans, or business as well?

        • Any plan is my understanding - it said contract and didn't define the end user.

All you need is the IMEI # and Proof of Purchase (Contract or Receipt)

        • +1

          @BKZ: Awesome, thanks.

        • @C0123: oops i read your question incorrectly. It has a set of rules for the cashback.
          From the website

Cashback is only available when you take up a new phone on a 24 month Go Mobile plan and handset repayment.

  • My mate bought an S7 edge on the 28/4/16 from an Aus retail store. Anything he can do?

    • +2

Return it and then buy it back maybe?

  • +1

I've got the s7 edge with the Gear VR and it's amazing. Resolution isn't problem at all. The phone screen works well. It's so much simpler than the Oculus Rift, without wires or cables etc.

Mine is paired with a Moga Pro Power Bluetooth controller so I can play Golden Axe on the Oculus Arcade and it's a fun machine. Seriously, for a free add-on, the Gear VR is an amazing piece of kit.

Also, there's more than enough free stuff on the Oculus store to keep you occupied for many many hours. Facebook integration is coming, and the social apps are pretty fun too.

The Circe De solei apps are great to show your friends as well!

    • Oculus and HTC both source their OLED displays from Samsung. I dont see a reason why there will be any significant difference in temrs of quality of a display.

  • +2

Where's the cheapest/best place to get an S7 right now? Contract just expired too.

  • +1

Goddammit got my s7 last month so fell right in the gap between free gear VR for preordering and this promotion. FML.

  • For any planning on jumping on board with this, consider getting a controller at the same time. Its a pain finding one locally (I couldn't at all) so I ordered a Moga Hero Power from Amazon - took me 2 weeks and ~$30 + delivery but it improves the longevity of games a fair bit.

  • I need to buy a silver S7 outright soon. Missed the 15% off ebay deal with bing lee. Wonder if there will be a better deal like 20% off or more?? Preferably aus stock, no grey imports

  • Just a caution from the T&Cs:

    e) "Participating Retailer" means a retail store, operator or an online retailer in Australia that sells the Participating Product, and excludes online bidding or auction websites (including www.ebay.com.au) or any unauthorised retailer/operator, or a second hand store. The Promoter recommends that prior to purchasing a Participating Product, the customer verify that the retailer is authorised to participate in this Promotion;

    • That would suck if i was to buy an s7 through bing lee on an ebay code sale :(

    • I would almost guess that online stores that sell through eBay, like Bing Lee and the Good Guys, would be fine. They issue you an invoice from the store itself, not through eBay. I could be wrong, but I read these T&C about eBay.com.au about buying "new" phones from anyone on eBay. I.E. eBay.com.au is not an authorised seller. Maybe…. Who knows.

EDIT: I should have read down a bit further, someone mentioned the same things.

  • I registered on Tuesday. My claim number is in the 10,000

  • @xitrapharlax

If you buy from say TGG/BingLee ebay site - but choose to pickup in store.
Do you still get an ebay invoice ? or an actual in-store invoice ?

I too am waiting for a 15%-20% discount sale. But this T&C doesn't fair well.

    • Good point, I've actually just gone back and checked an eBay order from the Good Guys for a Chrome Cast I got on a previous 20% eBay sale. It looks like you do get a store issued invoice and no reference to eBay on it. So it might be okay to go with eBay stores provided they have a store front associated and issue a separate invoice.

      • +1

I posted a question on their facebook post, but no reply.

I'm thinking. If I buy it now at RRP price, I can get it anywhere and be eligible for the VR headset.

OR I can wait for 20% off via ebay or other discount.

If it was via ebay, it would be a bonus if i can redeem the VR headset. YAY!

If not redeemable, I have saved $249.80 (s7 edge $1249 rrp) in comparison to buying at RRP now for the $159 VR headset.

        • My partner is getting the S7 soon on a plan so he will be able to claim a VR, whereas I am waiting for a 20% off ebay discount so I can buy it outright. For us, it wont be worth it if we have two in the household right? Thats if a 20% ebay sale comes along AFTER the promo period. perhaps just one VR is enough..
Come on ebay, where is that 20% off?!!!

        • @khdsl:

I think i will wait for 15-20% off.
Not in a rush to get the s7 just for a free VR headset. If i want the VR headset, i'll get it separately after my purchase.

But really, i think the headset will be for sh*ts and giggles. I have seen a video where they played a VR game, and the mobile overheated and needed to cooldown b4 continuing. So not sure if the s7 will be viable for extended usage under VR.

        • Lol probably becomes useless after a few oohs and aahs

      • I bought from TGG and the Tax Invoice has an item for 'eBay Delivery'. What should I do?

        • It's fine, TGG is still a bricks and mortar store. Just select TGG from the list of sellers as you submit your claim. Mine was delivered to me so i had a pdf of the invoice and just attached that file in.

        • @khdsl: Did the invoice you submitted have an item for eBay Delivery?

        • @MatthewS: yeah it did. I submitted my claim 24 May and the status is 'In Progress' so it hasnt been approved yet. Just still being reviewed. Fingers crossed.

They're now offering it for people who purchased in April as a goodwill gesture.

    • Thanks - added to OP

  • Ohh what the … I bought my S7 just after the first promo ended toward the end of March.
Now this promo starts off as May and is also covering April as well ?!?

So in the last 3 months, I happened to buy mine in the week or two that this isn't covered.. ? :(

    • Just contact them anyway, they're likely to offer it to you, report back!

      • Yeah I thought I'd have a good chance of it but… I guess not.

"Thank you for your interest in registering for the Samsung Gear VR Promotion.

Unfortunately we cannot honour your promotion claim as you have purchased a product outside of the Promotional Period as defined in the terms and conditions of this promotion (which can be found at https://www.samsung.com.au/promotions/gear-vr-offer/conditio…).

As a result, we will not be awarding you with a Gift."

What a joke… I was 6 days after the first promo and I'm 14 days before the current promo. :(

Oooh bought mine April 2nd. I'll find my receipt and email it in.

  • A friend of mine was asking about deals on this phone. Whats the best option?

  • If I purchased around 8th April, I'm eligible right? Kinda confused on this T & C

no later than 14 days after Purchasing a Participating Product from a Participating Retailer in accordance with clause 6a), visit www.samsung.com.au/promotions/gear-vr-offer ("Website") , follow the prompts to the online claim form ("Online Claim Form"), and

    • All good, can anyone point out what the proof of purchase number is?

  • Has anyones claim moved from registered yet? I applied on the 2nd and still no movement

    • Just checked, still 'Registered'. Claimed on 15/05

    • Mine still says "Registered" too. Applied on 10th May.

  • Woot, mine now says in progress

  • Now been updated to include March purchases according to people on Whirlpool.

    • Thanks - Do you have a link?

        Galaxy S7 Gear VR Promotion
        Valid from Mar 11, 2016 to Jun 30, 2016

        • Awesome, thanks. However I dont seem to have the ability to edit my original post anymore… Admins?

  • Yeah I emailed them a couple weeks ago and they said they couldn't help me.
They then sent me an email a few days ago saying:

    "Thank you for your email.

As a goodwill gesture, if you have purchased a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge (Australian variant) after the 11 March, you are eligible to claim a bonus Gear VR, if you otherwise satisfy the promotion terms and conditions of course.

We are in the process of updating the website to allow purchase dates from 11 March and will let you know when you can visit https://www.samsung.com.au/promotions/gear-vr-offer/ to register your claim.

Once advised, please register your claim asap and before the 14 July 2016 .".

Website hasn't changed yet though, so nothing we can do until the website is updated from what I gather.

EDIT: Scratch that, I just logged my claim for 14/03/16.
Their T&C's still say from May onwards on https://www.samsung.com.au/promotions/gear-vr-offer/ … but the online form allows you go back as far as March - so give it a shot.

    • Yeah they still haven't changed the T&Cs, but my claim for my April purchase has been approved so no issues there.

  • +1

    Just checked my claim, approved.

  • Just bought the S7 from TGG Ebay store with delivery (no stock in-store for pickup). Hopefully I will get TGG invoice, not Ebay. Has anyone in the same situation successfully claimed the GEARVR yet?

    • +1

You will get a TGG invoice. Only my phone box was delivered wrapped in bubble wrap. I had to call up the store it was sent from for the invoice to be emailed to me. They may have just forgotten to email it in the first place. The invoice will say that it was an Ebay delivery. Im still waiting for my claim to be approved. It is currently still being reviewed but i only put the claim through about two weeks ago anyway. Ill let you know how it goes.

      • thank you. Please let me know.

Mine won't arrive till 22nd June, according to their ETA.

        • Just replied indirectly to you underneath

        • My claim just got approved today woohoo!

        • @khdsl: nice, thanks for the update. Still waiting for mine to arrive….

  • Thats ages away!! I ordered mine on a Tuesday night and it arrived Thursday. From Oxley, QLD to Sydney! My local stores didnt have any for pick up either and i got the last one available on ebay at the time (during the recent 20% ebay tech sale)

  • Bought my S7 from Bing Lee a couple of weeks back, with the 20% off through their Ebay store.
Samsung knocked back my receipt, I assume because it says Ebay, despite coming from Bing Lee,
    and not an 'auction'.
    Buyer beware!

(If anyone has had success with Bing Lee Ebay receipt and Samsung let me know.)
    Thanks.
