      • Some of the 2015 Members Favourites have gone MIA which is surprising and they aren't servo's or newsagencies' either. I can understand if they're cleaning up the list and getting rid of servo's and newsagencies as they are somewhat a necessity and don't need an extra push to drive foot traffic there.

Excluding online sales is really taking the mickey though.

    • My guess is that the Opal/Myki top-ups have taken the takings over the threshold of being a small business.

  • camberwell newsagency accepted amex for my myki - even though receipt says myki no amex/dinners (sic) :)

  • MYKI- COBURG - Halfpenny Discount Pharmacy. No surcharge and confirmed working.

  • Where do I complain if the shop does not accept amex but it's in shop small

  • +1

If anyone is near neutral bay there's a double whammy

Wycombe road newsagent and the young street one just the other side of military both did opal top ups for me a few hours ago. The shops are about 100m from each other so easy to pick up a couple of credits.

Worth the trip if you have more than one card… Both very close to military road so easy to get on most buses from city out that way. Both have $1 surcharge though. No wonder no one normally pays Amex

Cincotta Chemist on Beamish street Campsie works. No Opal but they're a pretty cheap chemist to begin with. Plus Kotex U pads & tampons already on sale.

    • Discount drug store at Campsie also accepts too. No opal but can stock up on certain items

  • Any success stories for Opal top ups from Sydney CBD today?

    • +1

Wu's pharmacy and World Square newsagency. $0.50 and $1 surcharge respectively. But havent received any confirmation email after 2pm.

      • Thank you! Did you find them on the Shop Small map? I'm having trouble finding them.

      • Dunno about WS newsagency, but Wu's pharmacy doesn't come up on the Shop Small map for me this time around.

No Daiso, Pattison's Patisserie (only Bangaroo), 7 Eleven, IGA, and a lot of the petrol stations and newsagents pulled out too.

      • Is Wu on the map now?

  • +6

Shop Small is a huge let down this time. I did not make one spend. Why? only 2 days and on a weekend. No petrol stations, weekends I'd rather cook and eat at home…. And I just can't be bothered using the amex map to search for places to shop. Why can't they give us a LIST??? And better introduction/description of the actual shops, if a shop sounds like it's got something I want, I might give them a go. But now they just appear randomly like lost souls on a huge map. hmmm.

    Nov 2015 estimate spend:

    4 x petrol
probably 16 lunches (4 x lunches per week)
    probably 6 x shopping at small businesses/groceries

    May 2016 spend:

    nothing

  • I know it's too late now, but anyone know where "Evergreen Fruit Markets" is in Chatswood?

The address given for this business, "SHOP 1 2 ENDEAVOUR STREET", on the Shop Small map led to a "New Yen Yen" building which housed an Asian supermarket, butcher, and greengrocer. The greengrocer there does not accept AmEx. Did I go to the wrong shop?

  • +1

Melburnians looking for places to spend….

Myki top up available at the Summit Convenience shop at City Road, Southbank - no surcharge

Asian groceries (mainly Korean) at 342 Flinders St, Melbourne - no surcharge as well.

    • Hmm Summit charged me 50c, or $1 for my 2x cards. Good on you though!

  • Opal results from Sydney CBD:
City convenience @ 11 Alfred St (near Circular Quay): $22 for a $20 Opal topup.
Ezymart (Menzies Newsagent) @ 14 Carrington St (near Wynyard): $22 for a $20 Opal topup.
Ezymart @ Rawson Place (near Central): $21 for a $20 Opal topup.

All up: $35 for $60 worth of topups after the rebates. 42% off.

Received AMEX emails within 30 mins for all three purchases. Good exercise for the weekend.

    • damn it I thought the rawson place is closed on sunday

    • +1

Rawson place guy was eating a halal snack pack when I went in. Top bloke.

      • just went there the guy said the machine is broken :(

    • That's hilarious.

Alfred street convenience must have got wind of the shop small promo. 7.30am Saturday they charged me $1.

      Opportunists!

  • +4

Two Ezymarts in close proximity to the other in Bondi Junction accept AmEx for Opal.

    237 Oxford St, 70c surcharge
    26 Bronte Rd, $1 surcharge

    All with email confirms

  • Anyone know how I can get 25 AMEX cards? There was a Chinese guys today rocked up with 25 AMEX cards at Ezymart Church St Parramatta for opal topup. This will make him a rich guy!! $20 topup for $21, so $9 profit per card. $9 x 25 card = $225 and he said he will do 2 more stores, so $225 x 3 = $675. More than what most of us make a day at work.

    • +1

i think this is more a mindset on amex rebate. i dont call this profits at all but rather a 50% max discount for each purchases. you are technically still spending money but no doubt the promo has great value over normal purchases.

    • Supplementaries and cards linked to his bank for his mortgage my friend.
I guess opal is something you will always need to get around town?
I used my cards at various pharmacies to get household essentials.

    • Yeah those are probably supp Amex card. One for each of his family, friends and enemies.

  • Done and dusted. 2 opal top ups (Ezymart Rawson Pl $21, Ezymart 237 Oxford St $20.70) and a lunch up in Townsville, all with immediate emails. Pretty happy with that. Will be better prepared next time with supp cards :)

  • You know who probably loves this promo?
All the convenience stores that charge 5-10% Amex surcharge for doing nothing! Isn't Amex 3% at most?

    • +3

      You know who else?

TfNSW, who suddenly bank thousands of dollars of public money.

      • Haha classic! Never thought of that

        • And sitting in their bank account without paying any interest. Their bank will love us all who pack the Opal money there.

Did anyone go to a listed retailer and find that they don't take Amex cards?

If so, you should still be able to get your $10 credit. Have a look at this thread:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/219095

I've just made a claim. Will hopefully hear back soon.

    • I had one not getting cash back even if it accepted my Amex without issue (and it's the same cafe I always went for shop small promo in the past without any problem on getting the cash back). Filled up the form on your link yesterday, haven't heard anything back until now

  • Was sure that Kinokuniya bookstore, Townhall, Sydney on the list. Spent $80 on books but got no confirmation.

Today check back with the Amex map and can't find it.

Did Amex sneakily change the list ? Anyone shop at the same bookstore ?

Edited: Found it now on the map. Was hidden under Member Favorite.

  • Anyone got credit back on the Amex card?

    • You should get an email back straight away

      • Sorry I meant the actual $10 credit on the card. Not the email notifications.

        • got 1 from Amex Discovery so far.

    • I got 2 of them. The other one is sitting under pending and cleared today but I got all three emails.

      • I didn't get an email or the cashback… Anyone else have the same issue? What can I do about it?

        • I've got one that didn't get an email. The other seven I got emails for. If I don't get the cashback by the end of the week I was going to contact them using the link someone posted.

        • All of mine have now come through including the one that I didn't get an email for. Just missing one on my wife's cards which she got an email for.

      • Out of 3 transactions, I only received one email (which was also the only purchase where I had to insert the card) - the payment for that and one of the others (both done on Saturday) have come through, still waiting on cashback for the one from Sunday.

    • Thanks for the replies. I got 2 credits back. Third transaction was done at world square news agency which I didn't get an email or credit as of today. Might ring Amex up tomorrow if it hasn't appeared on my account

      • The cashback for the Sunday transaction came through overnight - hope yours have appeared in your account now.

      • Did you end up getting the $10 from WorldSquare news agency? I have not received it until today..
Any link to complain to Amex?

        Cheers

          https://www316.americanexpress.com/iFormsSecure/un/iforms.do…

Last time they were quick to respond, but this time, they replied asking for a receipt (which I wasn't given) and for me to tell them the amount of the transaction (which was already written in my original message). Messaged Sunday, heard back and I responded Tuesday. I'm still waiting…

Also, their 'secure email' is a pain to use.

        • +1

I called up Amex with the no. at the back of the card. They told me it might take 2 weeks

        • I got the response back saying WorldSquare News Agency is not a participating store. They also not honoring $10 credit for City Convenience Store at 525 George St. Pretty hopeless of Amex this time, I never had trouble in past with these two stores!

        • I received an email about one transaction saying they will give me a $10 credit to thank me for the feedback (rather than acknowledging that the store is on their map and the credit didn't apply automatically). I'm still waiting for a response about my other card used at the same location. It's been over a week.

  • +5

Maybe I should hand in my OzB membership - I didn't ended up using a single transaction. At all.

  • Is anyone game enough to claim the surcharge from Amex?

    • Amex guy told me next one is in September so get prepared this time lol

      • All cashbacks received today.
Thanks Amex, shall see you in November, but won't complain if its earlier!

  • Spent $63, only got $10 back, what should I do?

    The txn details:
18 MAY AMEX SHOP SMALL CR SOUTHBANK $10.00
17 MAY MELBOURNE CONVENIENCE STO MELBOURNE $22.00
17 MAY THE SUMMIT CONVENIENCE ST SOUTHBANK $20.00
16 MAY SWANSTON ST LOTTO MELBOURNE $21.00

  • just ring amex and quote the purchases…they will fix it up for you
