Avatar BLURAY $24.95 @ BIG W on the 28th of april

530

Hi Guys,

I was bored while waiting for a freind free at BIG W, checking out Blu-ray titles and the counter rep showed me a special @ BIG W, Bluray AVATAR for $24.95 on release date and DVD $19.95

This would mean there's little reason to trade your games @ JB HI-FI unless you don;t play em anymore.

This will be shown on BIG W's catalog next week.

Not sure how other retailer will respond to this, but i shot gun one copy on bluray @ that price

ENJOY!!

sounds a bit hearsay from me, but worth a +ive, man i still gotta go watch this at the cinema in 3d!!!

    • I've seen the catalogue — this is the price (although it's 24.96 from memory, but no biggie!) :)

    • worth seeing.. i went to watch it twice in 3D, IMAX was the bomb! a 3D version in Blue Ray won't be realease till 3D television are in demand which may take a year or 2, depending on how they market the product, but 3D technology also comes at a 5-15% increase compared to a equivilent FHD LCD. also the glasses are active 3D glasses which counters the flickering in 3D motion, they require charging and cost alot.. at the moment it will be like bluray vs hd dvd, till one dies and a benchmark goes mainstream.

      • aparently 3d version is coming out later this year

        • HMM wonder what sort of 3D technology they would use? because if they use the red abd blue glasses it will be crap… but if they use active 3d glasses? would you pay $150-250 per frame(glasses)? and a 120hz television? i personally wouldn't. watching a movie is a social event "are you gonna fork out $2000 for a 3d tele and one 3d glass and watch it alone?? just watch it at the cinema, its cheaper, better and you won't be known as a loser.

          • @mr: gotta agree with you there mr, I wont be buying a 3D TV, I honestly can't see them ever becoming mainstream

            • @[Deactivated]: cant wait to watch you guys eat your words!

although i do agree in there current format they may not become main stream, i had a pair of shutter glasses about 10 years ago, technology wasn't that good. (used them with my TNT2 when HL 1 was new)

but new and better technologies will come out that will be 3d and much better than we currently have, id prefer to buy 2 sub 1,000 dollar projectors, filter them, and use the standard glasses they have at cinemas.much cleaner than the shutter glasses.

              • @wisc: I know I should probably f'n google it, but where can I read more about the 2x projector setup??

              • @wisc: honestly I can't ever see me going Back to the future and wearing shades to watch TV, I haven't bought a Wii cos I don't like the idea of jumping around in front of the TV, I'm a couch potato dude, I sit and watch, if my hand reaches out for something its gonna be a beer or ps3/360 controller, not 3D goggles or wii wand

  • damn for a latest release DVD coming in at 24.95 .. thats hell cheap!

    • ohh thought i mentioned it incorrectly. Blueray version is $24.95, dvd is $19.95

not bad, didn't like the movie though, over hyped

    • +9

why do people neg that comment, he gave the deal a pos, just said he didn't like the movie…

he gets a neg cause he didnt like something? you guys are crazy!

heres a pos to balance them out… i think its a valid comment.

    • Yeah. It was all about the 3D. Gonna wait for the 3d blu-ray release.

      • +2

Because we have a bunch of idiots who seem to visit the site now to dish out anon negs and make themselves feel better about their feeble real lives? If I neg a comment I reply to it and explain why I believe I should be negged. I think we need to add the code here to show who negged or plussed a post by clicking on it that way we'd get less of these silly votes.

      • WhOops double posting iPhone

  • Yeh BigW/Target/KMart usually sell these new releases cheap for the first few weeks, then the price goes up.

  • Noticed that Lasoo shows Toys R Us giving $10 gift card with its pre-order - can't tell their price on their site though - http://www.toysrus.com.au/pre-orders/

Looks like we have another LOTR debacle coming up. They have been talking about releasing an extended version of Avatar with extra scenes cut from the cinema version. sigh.

    • lol.. i just hope theres a option to play the cut version because some uncut movies really get to sleepy man

  • Although this is cheap for a latest release Blu Ray, I'll still be trading at JB, my trade game cost me less than $10. :D

    • last week harvey norman had a games sale, got fallout, GT5 prolouge $5 Street fighter 4 for $15.. should of got a game which was eligible for the swap haha!! JB is a good deal, but i have no games to trade =(

    • I'm curious as to where else it is cheaper (for cash, of course)?

    • ur a hard cookie to please. 25 bucks is awesome for a new release avatar.

    • +2

Explain further or revoke your negative. Not liking the movie is not a valid reason.

      • Whoops can a mod remove my neg from Wampus' post above? I done it by accident, tried to pos it but my ape thumbs hit the wrong part of my iPhones screen…
I was just trying to balance out the neg votes that were given to all the posts that replied to toxicdave's post

hmmm wonder where they all came from lol

        • I canceled out your neg with a pos, but obviously there's still another.

I have to wonder how Dave would feel if people were arbitrarily voting all of his deals (as a rep from LayeredNetworks) negatively: "might be cheaper than some hosting, but not a bargain". Bit silly, I must say.

          • -4

@pais: Silly but it happens all the time. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I got nothing against this film.

            • +1

@toxicdav3: Opinions, yes, but the voting adheres to guidelines as outlined by the staff members with the help of the community. You can't compare apples and oranges when it comes down to voting (notice the ridiculous number of negatives on your original asinine comment) — "Might be cheaper than some latest releases, but its not a bargain"; what does that even mean? It's cheap, but not a bargain? Am I missing something here?

The bottom line is that you must be able to produce a comparable alternative for your vote to even be mildly valid. You haven't, which is why it's an unpopular "opinion".

              • -1

@pais: Well… This movie has no extra features and won't play in older blu ray players. It also contains advertising and piracy warnings. At this price, no thanks.

                • @toxicdav3: how do you know this? you already have a copy? doesn't every disc have adds etc?

                  I'm voting +1 to trolling…

                • @toxicdav3: Extra features are irrelevant. It's like saying "neg on this 3D TV deal, autostereoscopic TVs will be released in 5 years" — it makes no sense in the context of the bargain.

There are no comparable alternatives available. If you don't want to purchase this product because it lacks extra features (and includes ads), then that's your prerogative. Having said that, it's not a reason to vote negative as per the voting guidelines that have already been linked to. Have a read of them some time, mate. Vote based on the merits of the deal.

                  As I said:
“Might be cheaper than some latest releases, but its not a bargain”; what does that even mean? It’s cheap, but not a bargain? Am I missing something here?

For what it's worth, every single major DVD / BD (old/new) that you buy comes with advertising and piracy warnings. It's been that way since… laser disc?

                  • @pais: i think the warnings were around back in the day's of VHS .. and possibly even BETA.

    • +1

Seriously?…as per above, would love to know where you can get it cheaper then that? Even importing is more expensive….

    • +3

toxicdav3, can you please mention a place where you could buy it for less. Your vote may be withdrawn as it does not reach the guidelines

I reckon 6mths after release till nearly market saturation point with this release. Then uncut versions out. 6months after that 3D. 6months after that 3D uncut collectors edition with action figure… That should bring us to Avatar 2 ;-)

    • sounds about right
and i wont be buying any of it haha

Probably a combo edition with Pocahontas DVD / Bluray to compare the similar storyline

  • I bought a $15 Wii game from HN and pro-ordered at JB. Good deal and also with the guide book which BIGW doesn't have.

    • Which game was it?

      • Some unknown kid game from HN.

One JB refused to take it said that it is an UK game and they cannot scan it.

I took it to another JB without problem.

  • For those unaware, it has already been confirmed that the proper extended editions with extras will be released in November: http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=4456

  • -1

If you intend to see it again then why not watch it in August when it's re-released in cinemas with the 6min of extra footage? IMAX would be your best choice as the movie was made for it and surely they would re-release it there as well…

3D using glasses at home is the biggest gimmick ever, what about 4% of the population that cannot see 3D, what about those that have non-standard spacing between the eyes, what about people who wear glasses, what about any possible damage to your eyes after longtime viewing, what about possible damage due to radiation as a wireless transmitter sends signal from the TV to the glasses so the shutter operation matches the screen picture and you wear them around your head where it gets absorbed for hours?

    • Your comments are inaccurate on so many levels.

3D using glasses at home is the biggest gimmick ever

Purely subjective but I think it's pretty cool.

what about 4% of the population that cannot see 3D

I doubt 4% of the population is blind in 1 eye and has no depth perception.

what about those that have non-standard spacing between the eyes, what about people who wear glasses

A bit of challenge for manufacturers but they have mentioned plans to make glasses of different sizes and also glasses that fit over most prescription glasses.

what about possible damage due to radiation as a wireless transmitter sends signal from the TV to the glasses so the shutter operation matches the screen picture and you wear them around your head where it gets absorbed for hours

What the hell? Where do you get this info? All the transmitter does is sync the shutter operation on the glasses. It is an infra red/radio signal and is completely harmless. There is no radiation to fry your brains.

      • Just use common sense in what gimmicks past 100Hz, 200Hz…1337Hz? and SuperDuperXtraThiNn® can they come up with to cash in on the sheep now that they maxed it all out, oooo lookie 3D, wooo it's three… and its… :D

As for the rest don't be a sheep and believe everything they say on TV, do some research before making a claim, the spacing is not about the glasses but about the distance between the two cameras recording the source broadcast which is simulating the average distance between human pupils, heh infrared/radio signal, same thing aye? Quick googles for you regarding 4-5% of the population that cannot see 3D:
        http://www.vision3d.com/whycant.html
        http://www.cnet.com/8301-31361_1-20002742-254.html

        • Radiation from a wireless broadcasting? Uh, better dump your mobile phone, never pick it up again and put your tinfoil hat on :)

If you fall into the margin of people who can't watch 3D… well, you don't get 3d - obviously. I have no idea why this would even remotely impact your decision to get one… nor the need for it to be mentioned. There are people who are colour blind (about 5% of males) who probably think your red car is really green, but you get it anyway (because it's for you), right?

I won't be buying a 3DTV any time soon either… but I'm not buying one simply because I don't want to. I don't need meaningless rationalizations for it!

          • @pais: barely use the mobile, working on titanium foil for my hat (tricky :P ), my recommendation was to stay away from 3D at home and go for it in the cinema as it's a marketing gimmick, see how it matures in the next 2 years

        • Icy, it's hard to discuss anything with someone who can't make sense. Are you trying to educate me on how 3dtv works? How does that help your argument? Regardless of your pupillary distance, you will still be able perceive the 3D effect. It does not have to match the exact lens spacing during filming. There is no "standard" pupillary distance. I may not be an optometrist or an opthalmologist but I have learnt enough during my elective term in opthalmology while I was still in med school to know this.

I never claimed infrared and radio is the same. Just 2 different methods the manufacturers are implementing communication between the player and the 3D glasses. You still have yet to explain why you think use of the tv/3d glasses causes damage from your so-claimed radiation.

Also, the 4% number you claim is highly exaggerated. The true number will be revealed once these screens become available. The incidence of Amblyopia is extremely low and even if combined with the rates of individuals with reduced function of 1 eye, it still does not reach 4%. If you are one of these unlucky ones, too bad. Just don't mock something because it's new and you don't understand it.

          • @Livert: Well doctor, since you need it broken down in simple terms - I mentioned people with non-average spacing between their pupils (causing them headaches/eyestrain the more their pupil distance deviates from the average) and you responded with manufacturers are designing glasses with different sizes, however approx 7cm distance between cameras is how it is filmed in the first place… So how exactly do you propose (with all your opthalmology knowledge) that design of the glasses is going to help you resolve issues of watching 3D for hours on end, day after day?

4% is not a made up number, if you bothered to look at the links I sent you or looked it up for yourself you'd see why CNET claimed 4-10% are not able to perceive it OR are seeing blurry images and experiencing headaches/eyestrain which makes the whole process unenjoyable, Vision3D site claiming 12% are having some sort of a problem with their binocular vision.

As for any longterm effects and/or effects of heavy use, we shall find out in due time, should the precautionary principle not be used? WHO for example had to admit in October that longterm use of mobile phones may be causing cancer after all
            http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/mobile-phones/6420093/…
also in recent news a 30-year study has been launched in Britain…

    still, I ain't wearing 3D glasses :)

  • Traded GTA on 360 (Which I've had for about 2+ YRS) at JB HiFi for their avatar blue ray promo.
JB HiFi said that GTA was worth $16 to them
EB Games said that it was worth $15
And Game said it was worth $14

So technically I guess i got avatar on blu ray for just $16. I'm happy

  • -1
    • Jeeze, you really must dislike this bargain.. (Mod: Removed personal attack)

"For a release as big as Avatar I'm sure Fox used the latest BD+ encryption they could and possibly a net set AACS keys, it wouldn't surprise me if several player models have problems with it - although the Pioneer BDP51 seems to have more than their share is playback issues."

Bit unfortunate that you couldn't actually read the thread you're linking to — it's a firmware issue with specific hardware (which has nothing to do with Avatar, and is the responsibility of, say, Pioneer to update their firmware - but I'm sure you already knew that). Grasping at straws a little, aren't we?

      • -1

I've read the thing, its more than just that Pioneer which is affected. Not everyone knows how to update firmware, nor will every player get capable firmware. Plus its not the hardware manufacturers that are the cause of this issue.

        http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines
"Negative votes are also appropriate when there maybe something wrong with the product."

        • Hi toxicdav3,

If you provided the link in your initial post when voting negative, then yes your negative vote would be justified because you have alerted others about the known firmware issues with certain hardware (which was not mentioned in the initial post).

However your vote got revoked because you voted negative and made the following initial comments:

Might be cheaper than some latest releases, but its not a bargain.

Comments like these are not helpful, as they do not really indicate why you don't think this is a bargain.

Unfortunately, we are not able to easily reinstate your negative vote once it's revoked. So in future, please try to justify your negative vote with as much details as possible to avoid your vote from being revoked.

  • A+ though for arguing the point and changing your reason for neg vote, you ever tried ice skating up hill?

  • +1

uhhh yeah you did, that wasn't the post that you negged on, it was the first post by you mate - "Might be cheaper than some latest releases, but its not a bargain."

    Nice try ;)

  • Target has bluray copies for $20.00. DVD $15.00

    • The ship's sailed on that one… Deal finished shortly after you posted (today) and wasn't available everywhere.

  • I picked up the DVD today from Big W Macquarie Centre, NSW

  • Picked up the Blu Ray copy from Big W yesterday…

  • No sign of Avatar in Melbourne CBD Target.

So I wandered next door to JB Hifi who had copies everywhere for $24.95 so I picked it up there.

  • read this and went to Big W to pick a bluray copy. thanks.
