big market for Skype and other apps is the free Skype to Skype Internet calls especially if people want video. and it costs them so little in infrastructure just call set up costs ..and no regulatory requirements as they aren't telco carrier type calls … as soon as you go to landline and mobiles that all changes they incur real costs to the other carriers and regulatory costs as now they operate in the carrier space …….and the different tariffs that vary country to country.

  • No Philippines no good for me.

Did you all know that Skype won't work on smart TV's shortly…?

We recently bought a new Samsung Smart TV and the overpriced $150 Samsung Skype camera required to be able to speak to my wife's family in the UK, and they bought the same setup. About a month or so ago Microsoft (Skype's owner) announced that Skype will no longer be supported on smart TV's (Samsung, Sony etc) come June 2nd. It will quietly stop working on 100's of models of TV's after this date. As her parents are elderly, they struggle with operating iPads etc (which also wouldn't have the same effect). I really feel sorry for all those with young families and persons with disabilities that this will unfortunately affect, so subsequently Skype can get stuffed - Microsoft is obviously feeling it's not making them enough money that they're so deprived of…

Wow I'm glad I didn't buy a camera for my TV when DSE was clearing stocks

      • I'm glad I didn't buy a smart TV. …… was always worried about end of life and how long the manufacturer would support apps on their platform and smart TVs ….. instead I bought a micro PC and camera …. runs Windows 10 , kodi Skype etc. and will probably get updates longer than a to platform.

Intel has computer sticks ….. there's lots of cheap android tv boxes ($60) and also cheap Windows 10 mini pcs .

I think it's better to think of a Tv purchase more like buying a monitor rather than a software ecosystem that will be supported for many years to come.

No updates to app. it's up to manufacturer if they remove it from store. If it's on the device, no real change, but it may stop working in the future.

      • I can imagine manufacturers loosing interest in supporting particular apps for their end of model TVs after a while especially if they change processors or operating systems ….. how many years do you support apps on a platform as the next model has more memory and clock cycles and people want richer apps when they go shopping……and you compete with the other makers latest bling …..

Correct - Samsung have publicly stated that the app will be removed come this date however. My biggest issue was the price they wanted for the camera initially, which was about 3x the price of what it should have been and I'm quite convinced Skype was getting a fair portion of those profits too.

Best case scenario is that Samsung create their own app, though I'm not holding out much hope.
