Thanks for that well thought out argument. Really nailed your points.

      • -4

Frankly, I'd agree. Done similar things before - they are always a letdown. Generally, you see a city. There's a bar there. Its really not great.

        • +1

What else do you expect? You go up and look at a city from a pretty unique perspective. From a practical level, that's all you get to do at the Eiffel Tower too…

        • @TheZohan:

Which is why I'd rather look at the Eiffel tower than go up it.

Sometimes I think people should have to respond to a comment to be able to neg it. Dunno why I've got two neggers for having a valid opinion.

So this is for SkyDeck entry only?

    Or for 'The Edge' only?

    • What is the difference?

      • +1

SkyDeck entry is entry to Level 88 of Eureka.

Entry to 'The Edge' is the glass box which protrudes out of the Eureka at Level 88.

      • They are different. With this ticket you can only go upto that floor and look around. However if you want to go to the edge, you have to buy a separate tickets from that floor.
I went there last month with some friends visiting from Sydney, we gave up on going to the edge as there was a long queue for tickets and it's not really worth that long wait. Can't remember the exact price but I remember it was $12 or 16 extra for the edge.

        • It's still the tallest building in Aus. However another building is coming up which is taller. You may as well go there if you haven't, before it loose it's title as tallest.

        • @rmamila: Incorrect

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q1_(building)

          Tallest in Melbourne; yes.

        • @SnowDragon: Hey you gave a neg for that. Please check this next to the url you gave.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tallest_buildings_in_aust…
QLD one has got a pole/antenna at the top to go past Eureka Tower. Who can climb that pole to get the tallest view :)
Eureka is a highest possible view you can have in Southern Hemisphere atm.

        • +1

          @rmamila:

I wasn't the one who gave the neg.

        • +1

          @rmamila:
Ridiculous that height of spire is counted. Eureka's observation deck is 50m higher than Q1, that's what counts.

    • +1

skydeck only by the looks of T&C's

      • It's a $9 upgrade for The Edge I think, I hope that is applicable! If that's the case, total of $17 means it's still cheaper than a Full Adult Skydeck ticket ($20)

        • +1

i took it as $9 for skydeck and $12 extra for edge ($21 total)

        • +1

          @h3h3:

You know what, you're right - I saw the wrong pricing. $21 for both, vs $20 Full price for Deck only - my mistake.

        • +1

@jubbing: Still a good deal at $21 then

    • Click on the link and you'll see "9th birthday admission tickets are not valid for the Edge Experience or Sun and Stars. Edge Experience and Sun and Stars tickets are additional."

      • Cheers.

    • SkyDeck only. Edge is extra.

  • +1

How much is it normally? $8 because before today it was 8 years old? 😂😂

    • +6

It's normally $20 for an adult ticket.

  • -1

anyone read the conditions, is this skydeck , the edge or both ?

edit read it myself, it's only skydeck, the edge is excluded, even on special this is such a rip off

    • +6

can you name an observation deck for a building in a major city preferably 60 stories plus - that charges money AND is considerably cheaper than this?
i know malaysia is free but you have to line up like 2 hours beforehand to get the free tickets (i did it) but I dont know of any others that is much cheaper than $9

eg. just checked empire state is $32 US for a standard ticket. and burj charges $46AU approx

      • I guess the age of entitlement hasn't disappeared yet…

      • +1

Skytower at SkyCity Auckland NZ is $28NZ for an Adult… https://www.skycityauckland.co.nz/attractions/sky-tower/

So this seems alright to me :)

        • Better view from up there though

      • +3

The interior lighting in Melbourne is very poor for an observation deck. Unlike other observation decks which have dim lighting, the Melb version has lighting which reduces the ability to see out the windows at night. If you go outside, it resolves the issue but that also limits the appeal for colder nights. Overall, I was disappointed with the Melbourne experience.

$9 is a discount and the conditions are good (6 month period) so I'll upvote the deal but I recommend visitors select a warm night to visit since they need to go outside for the best chance to see anything.

        • +2

It's actually really terrible for taking photos, constantly getting glare off the windows depending on angles.

      • +4

taipei 101, worlds tallest building for quite a while, approx $10 - Eiffel tower about $20 depending on euro fluctuation.

I don't like the practice of baiting to go to the top and then be hit with the edge price, just place a fee from the beginning. there isn't much to do either once you are up there, yeah a bar… possibly a toilet ( i didn't look).

I was disappointed it was a tourist trap without even the perks, and felt like a rip off (and i'm not on ozbargain because i like splashing cash)

there is much more to do in melbourne for the same price, museum/art wise or even a river ride which my parents liked

        • I don't like the practice of baiting to go to the top and then be hit with the edge price, just place a fee from the beginning.

from my 2 examples empire state also has an added experience that they charge extra for - same with burj - im sure many other places would also have "extras" as addons. Just accept it as part of many places buisness model.

eg. NZ place linked above has skywalk addon.

I dont deny that there is much to do in melbourne for a cheap price but imo thats a poor comparison - the comparison is for a tourist trap observation deck. Have you been to that southern star wheel thing? You would LAUGH if you have and try to compare it to this.

          oh and mate - just checked taipei 101 - its $21 - not $10.
          http://ticket.dingok.com/Taipei101/2/2016/5/10/23 ($500 taiwan dollars)
eiffel tower is $26 not $20
          http://ticket.toureiffel.fr/index-css5-sete-pg1-lgen.html (17 euro)

The interior lighting in Melbourne is very poor for an observation deck.

I agree with this … Ive only been twice so I dont know if they have changed it - maybe they cant due to stupid HR regulations?

        • +3

          @voter1:

yeah no worries, it's just not something i'd recommend to friends. I haven't tried the wheel it just looks so awkward to get to.

wasn't my point to argue, just give a visitor's opinion

          (i had paid 400nt for 101, and 17euros was 20aud a few months ago)

        • @juki:

yeah no its cool - im just saying that for an observation tower melbourne's one is pretty standard - nothing extraordinary but I dont think its overpriced either. Now with the $9 special - its pretty cheap.

        • +1

          @voter1:

Spare an hour sometime to go watch the sunset there, it's quite amazing. I got there early to guarantee a decent spot, bought myself a drink then sat in a comfy sofa watching the sun go down. Well worth the ~$12 (+drink) or whatever the deal was at the time.

If you're going at a generic time in the middle of the day I agree it's pretty average, but at times like sunset/sunrise/etc it's quite awesome.

        • +6

@dyl: This is the same rule I use for all observation decks - go before sunset so you see the city in daylight, sit and wait for an hour while the colour hits the buildings, then look out over the city lights. Three very different views of a city in the one ticket price.

        • @moooooooo:
Exactly what I did, was worth the money.

        • @dyl: Hey dyl Ihave a question. 'Edge Experience and Sun and Stars tickets are additional' Does it mean you have to pay extra if you want to experience both night and day? Is it $5.50 extra according to this?https://www.eurekaskydeck.com.au/tickets-pricing/

        • @Durant:

Sun and star is 2 separate tickets to be used over 2 days concurrently (NOT 1 one day and the other a week later).

If you time it as mentioned in other comments above, you can get all 3 - day, sunset, night - in one visit.

I agree with other posts also, lighting is horrible and destroys photos so leave the camera at home, unless you're zooming in/taking a tele shot which will eliminate the smudges and reflections.

Worth it for a $9 relaxed view. I felt it was overrated at $20 but I'd never been, so sucked it up as part of a nice day out with my wife.

        • @Durant:

The extra is for if you want to watch the sunrise, leave, then come back a second time at night for sunset. It's basically a two-use ticket, rather than one visit. Second use only valid within 1-2 days of first.

      • Bitexco Ho chi minh can be under $10 and includes free drinking water while you are up there.

        http://www.bitexcofinancialtower.com/?p=3948

        • You can only go to the 49th floor though, and it's in a dirt cheap country where everything is a tiny fraction of the prices in Melbourne!

      • Tokyo Skytree is super expensive as well, paid, AND I had to line up for 2 hours (my mistake going on a Sunday).

        • Tokyo also has the Government Building for a free city view.

I also found the view from Caretto Shiodome to be worthy of a visit - you can see over the fish market during the day and Daiba light show at night.

      • +1

The Hancock building in Chicago is FREE. If you go to the 95th floor there is a bar, you can get a drink and wander around the 360 degree view. Magnificent. I used to live just near there, and call in for a beer Friday nights.

    • +1

Edge is ALWAYS extra, why would you think its included?

also not a rip off, when its normally $20…..

    • +2

It has cost a lot to make this building so tall. So they have to recover all that cost from selling tickets to show it's height. ;)
It only cost money to look down from the top. If you go there and look up from the bottom it's free.

  • The edge is $12 dollars

  • For those in Melbourne, I noticed recently that the Tower is looking a bit shabby at the top. The golden top windows part is now a mishmash of window colours and looks odd - theres not that full veneer of gold anymore.

hHave a look up in the daytime and you'll see what I mean.

    • +2

Sure the variations aren't due to reflections from the sky?

      • Definately not. Have a look up next time. its a mishmash of different window tints.

  • great, anniversary surprise sorted!

  • +3

There are a few buildings under construction in Melb which will be taller or same size. So they gotta make the most of their attraction now haha

  • +3

surprised no one said anything about the date.
    Friday the 13th…….

  • Can't wait for their 88th birthday…

  • Lucky Friday 13 :)

  • +1

Perfect! And with 6 months expiry they will still be valid for when my family come from overseas in October/November.

  • least you get Better view's than that ferris wheel in docklands…$35

  • +1

Buy online, redeem within 6 months, good!!!

  • Thanks op! Got some overseas relos coming in a month and visiting Melbourne for the first time. Perfect! :)

  • +1

I went up there at night once when I first moved here. I found all the random coloured scrolling text readouts really annoying as they reflect in all the glass windows.

  • Having just paid 26 pounds (AU$51) to go up the Shard in London this is deal of the year!!!!!

    http://www.theviewfromtheshard.com/en/tickets-packages/ticke…

  • Brings back memories of when my workplace had a party in the bar on the 89th floor. Even the toilets had awesome views! I would recommend, but then again I really love a nice view.

I proposed on the skydeck and divorced 2 years later

It's off to a good start hey!?

      • Reminds me of the days when the airlines released 1 cent flights to Sydney.

        • I only conveniently picked my phone up at 10:04 albut only just remembered the deal went live at 10:00am.

  • Apparently while browsing my old emails, i noticed that the price of the tix compared to last years has gone up by a dollar =( It was 8 bucks same time last year when they had the sale for their birthday.

    • Might as well be free - you can't book it anyway - 20 mins in and the site is still down…

    • next year will be $10 I reckon.

  • Guys, if you missed out, Entertainment Book Melbourne has this buy one get one free. Since is $20 per person, it will come down to about $10 pp using the voucher.

    • How can we missed out if the deal will be running all throughout the day? and it just started 20min ago

      • Haha probably an honest suggestion, but can't help but laugh at the timing/delivery. No sales pitch at all……

      • it didn't work even at 9.55, 5 min earlier than the start point…

  • Good photo taking spots or are the windows all dirty/scratched?

    • Random fingerprints but they're the least of your problems. The reflections/lighting/moving text on the floor is the biggest paid. See my reply earlier RE my experience and attempting to take photos.

In short, if you're not there for photos, the lighting, reflections, etc can be ignored easy enough and it's an enjoyable enough view.

  • +1

Anyone get the site to work yet? Ive been sitting here refreshing for 30 mins lol.

    • +2

Nope - doing the same with no luck
That 386 with the 14.4K baud modem must be struggling :-)
