1st Choice - 20% off Selected Single Malts - Eg Glenmorangie 10 y/o - $60

640

Some pretty good deals on solid entry-level /core bottling single malts going around at the moment, I guess to celebrate World Whisky Day. All of these can be had at Dan Murphy's for 5c less (and with Cashrewards/Woolworths Wish discounts) but I'm choosing to post the 1st Choice ones as they were the ones who initially dropped the price, Dan's is just following suit as always these days.

My picks from the sale, especially if you're starting to collect and experiment i think these can cover a wide range of taste profiles so you can work out what you like!

  • Good choice of contrasts ….will need to check it out ….no first choice near me so will need to be price match .

    • Who does price match on alcohol ?

      • Dan Murphy's price beats.

        P.S. (Shameless plug (Muahahahah))

  • Thanks op

I wonder how she will react when I buy one of each?

    • +2

"Fine. I'll go get me-self that handbag and a dozen pairs of shoes."

    • +5

If you keep buying enough eventually it's impossible to track what's new and old…

  • We're spoilt for choice here. I'd include Oban and Cragganmore and maybe exclude Ardberg from your introductory list. I do enjoy Ardnerg but IMO it's usually appreciated by seasoned single malt drinkers who happened to like Islay whiskies.

  • +5

Ardbeg! Booya! Great price. I agree with earlybird that Ardbeg is an acquired taste. I happen to like the taste of whiskey that tastes like it has been filtered through an ashtray

    • +2

For me, nothing beats an "ashtray filtered whiskey" (Ardbeg Uigeadail) with a nice cigar (Joya de Nicaragua) a cold night in front of a fire.

      • +1

As long as you don't have a Mrs to kiss.

I once bought Uigeadail on a night out to see if I could scare off some women with the smell. They must have been really into my friend.

  • +2

Lagavulin down to $88 as well, normally $100.

    The best for peat IMHO.

    • +1

Looks like DM has it up for $87.95 at the moment!
      Here

      By far, my favourite.

  • +1

I have not tried Glenmorangie yet. How does it compare to Glenlivet 12 y or Glenfiddich. Glenlivet 12 y is my fav. This seems to be a bit expensive compared to these two.
Edit: Thanks OP for posting 1st choice.

    • +2

IMO Glenmorangie isn't anything like the 12yo Glen. My Fav is the 12 or 18yo Glen too. I didn't like the Glenmorangie, but everyone's taste is different!

    • Glenmorangie is a bit sweeter IMO. Depends what you like I guess

      • Thanks. Glenlivet is little sweet as well and not that strong in smell and taste.

    • sweet
      smooth
      flower-i
      very nice

    • 7 News reports on Aldi's whiskey selection? That's some fine scotchy scotch news coverage, there.

    • Anyone tried the Aldi 18 ?

  • Ardbeg 10 for $68!! WIN!! Thanks OP

Edit: Baha, Dans beats it by 10c at $67.90

    • I'd gladly offer 1stChoice my patronage if possible because they have consistently been a price leader whereas Dans have tended to play catchup reluctantly despite them trumpeting their 'lowest liquor price guarantee'. I'm still lamenting the demise of Aldi liquor.

      • +3

I don't know how true this is, I've seen quite a lot of times where Dans initiated the price drops and 1stChoice play catchup. And Dans monitors prices and changes their prices a few times a day.

        • Well said! they have plenty of specials themselves, plenty can be found on here. their 'lowest price guarantee' = catchup. They see a lower price and beat it. Doesnt that also mean they dont need to run as many specials as they are in effect lowering their price to 'special' pricing.

I can forgive them for not getting onto a price as soon as its lowered elsewhere. If they havent lowered it on shelf yet then just ask them, no diff from asking Office works or the good guys to match is it? 1st Choice is 30+km from me, Dans is less than 5km so its great a place is wiling to do it

      • +1

I find that to be the complete opposite on many occasions.

  • +1

Glenmorangie 10 - $59.90 @ Dan Murphys before cash back or gift card.

I'm really liking these discounts and price matching haha, cheaper stuff all around for everyone!

  • +1

Bought 2 Ardbegs. Great price, I don't usually see Ardbeg come down in price

    • Yeah it is one hell of a Whisky..

    • how much is Ardberg normally? I liked JW Double black so I want to try this one…

      • +1

        Ardbeg's are normally $88 at Dan's

JW Double black is like a watered down version of the Ardbeg. If you like smokey whiskeys then you'll like this one.

Other smokey whiskys are Laphroaig and Lagavulin.

        • thanks for the comparison, will buy one!

  • +1

Look at Jura Superstition $71 at 1st Choice $87 at Dans

    • Isn't that a blend included in the single malts specials?

      • Yeah has 13 year and 21 year old Malts from the same Distillery,. so still a single malt

  • These brews also looks like a pretty good deal…
    https://www.1stchoice.com.au/Beer/steamrail-pale-ale-bottle-…

  • Dalwhinnie 15 for $66 looking like a decent deal. Anyone tried it? I generally like Highland and Speyside malts.

    • +1

It has a fruity nectar note and you'll probably enjoy it if you like whiskies from the Highlands and Speyside. It's an occasional buy for me when there is a great offer like this.

  • +1 for first choice

  • +2

If you haven't tried the Glen Grant 10yo, that's a really gentle drop and fantastic value at $50. I am surely tempted by the Lagavulin though.

  • +1

Dans have undercut them all hehe. But I will buy from 1st Choice to reward their price cuts :D

How much is the Ardbeg 10 normally at Dans?

    • +1

Vintage Cellars/Liquorland has Ardbeg & Dalwhinnie for $85.
BWS have Talisker 10 at the lower price, but normally $92.

    • +1

I bought the Ardbeg for $88 on New Years Eve last year and this is the first time I've seen it drop in price.

  • I would like to buy from First Choice, but Dan's offers Click & Collect (and also accepts Woolworths gift cards that I bought at 5% discount.) I can't believe 1st Choice still haven't done this.

    • Click and collect is available in vic forst choice stores, rollout coming for ither states.

Waste of money. You know how much fruity lexia you can buy for that price? Don't tell me you drink for the taste. HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. Utter waste of money. If you are going to piss it out either way buy goon.

    • Why can't I tell you I drink it for the taste, when that's why I drink it?

I'm sad for you that fruity lexia is as much as your palate can handle.

One day you'll be a big boy and be able to drink big boy drinks too!

Until then, it's probably best for everyone if you stay in the children's section of the website.

  • Bought 2 x Dalwhinnie, a Glen Grant and an Ardbeg.

Had a quick taste and they're all delicious.

I did forget to rinse the glass after the Ardbeg and boy did it make the gentle Dalwhinnie all smoky!

Thanks pingponged for posting this, I haven't enjoyed a really good scotch since the Highland Park 18 year old for ~$110 deal was posted here a few years ago.

  • +1

And those with Fly Buys, check your emails and activate the spend $30 to receive 1000 bonus points valid from 20/05 to 22/05

You also get bonus points when activating and buying a range of Johnnie Walker whiskeys

  • I tried the Ardbeg and love the smokiness. Can you guys suggest some other malts with similar levels of smoke? I wouldn't like too much more smoke than Ardbeg offers.

    • +1

Laphroaig is equally smokey and does not have that disinfectant edge of Ardberg, and Talisker combines that smokiness with a tiny bit of iodine seaweed kinda saltiness. Bowmore doublewood is also good but not included in this deal.

    • +1

If you want to go up a notch - try Bruichladdich. The peat project appears to be on sale. If you can take more peat (I see you don't want to) Octomore 6.1 is available for 169.99.

Anyone managed to find any Japanese whiskey on sale? So expensive everywhere

    • +1

You will be lucky to find any Yamazaki or Hukushu on shelf let alone discount :)

      • This is true…so disappointing

      • Dan has them all but not sale prices

        • Which Dan? I saw only 2 stores so far got a few Yamazaki 12yo but none of the Distiller Reserves. I snapped up whatever bottles Yamazaki left on the shelf.

    • What is special about Japanese whiskey ?

      • +2

You should try - they are really good. While the Hibiki and Yamazaki get a lot of good reviews I think Hakushu deserves it too.

        • I didn't like the Hakushu much at the beginning but after half of bottle down the track I think it's a nice dram.

      • +2

I believe the Yamazaki was voted the best whisky in the world. Like the Sullivan's Cove did, disappeared of the shelf and sky rocketed in price

        • (wrong reply)

        • +1

I believe the Yamazaki was voted the best whisky in the world.

That's only for their aged sherry cask and by an ex-journo turned self-styled whisky connoisseur named Jim Murray that few Scottish distillers took much notice of until fairly recently.

I've had the Yamazaki. It's very good but much overrated and I wouldn't pay a premium for it if I can get aged Scottish drams for the same price.

        • @EarlyBird:
just wondering, why is Jim Murray such a popular whiskey reviewer?

        • @obiwan:
I think it's the social media effect after his reviews were shared by some bloggers and a new generation of drinkers started requesting them at their favourite drinking holes. Then there's that issue of image baggage as some youngsters don't want to identify themselves with the whiskies that their parents or grandparents drink. I know that doesn't answer your question directly and I'm prepared to be corrected.

Having seen it misspelt a few times in this post, I should like to point out that the correct spelling is whisky. Whiskey generally refers to an Irish whiskey or an American Bourbon.

      • Try it and find out for yourself. I've tried Yamazaki and Nikka and both are better than most other whiskies around their price range. I don't believe I've tried a better whiskey than Yamazaki and I've trued basically everything under $200. That's my opinion anyway (not a fan of smokey / peaty whiskies).
