The English is really, really bad…

Yeelight intelligent lamp built millet smart home Wi-Fi module, the gateway can not connect to the home WiFi, and controlled by a mobile phone.

The original (?) Yeelight worked via BT, this … I don't know. Does it have wi-fi or does it not? Can it or can it not connect to the home wifi? Do you need to buy a XiaoMi gateway like you do with other smart lights?

    • You are right. This can't be trusted to use with WiFi
They need to come up with solid evidence.why can't they provide a video?

      • -1

They spend a lot of money creating pretty decent products, yet for some reason they can't be bothered describing them properly.

        • +2

They use machine translation for a lot of things. I guess it's more economical to do so when your website is listing literally thousands of different products, it's not always possible to have an English proofreader check each and every one of them. you might do it for flagship items like Xiaomi phones and such, but not for minor items.

    • +2

This uses inbuilt wifi. It does not use Bluetooth or a Gateway like the previous versions. It's simply a bad translation - it will be fixed.

      • Well ok… I'll get a couple then. @_@

You're killing me here. For some inexplicable reason I want to replace every light in my life with these.

    • +1

Then you will become a magician

    • +1

Tell me about it. I was very sorely tempted when I saw the price - the cheapest it is elsewhere is like a solid $10+ more. Sadly, the more I read on the details… the less interested I become.

      • All of my light sockets are bayonet style and these seem to be screw in ones? I'll see if I can find bayonet and maybe buy 1.

        • +4

          You're screwed

        • +2

I'll see if I can find bayonet and maybe buy 1.

They only come as Edison Screw, but you can get a bayonet converter.

Bayonet to Edison converters are an eyesore but pretty cheap.

I bought an adaptor from eBay for a few dollars for my daughter's LIFX bulb…. as long as your fitting has got enough space for the extra length it works fine.

        • @altomic:
Apparently. Oh well, converter option below seems to be a possibility. Might look into older/cheaper versions of this though.

        • @Miss B:
Or above, as it ended up.

          @rekabkram:

Bayonet to Edison converters are an eyesore but pretty cheap and almost certainly dangerous and illegal.

The lampholder portions (2 of them) in lamp converters are High Risk "declared" or "Prescribed" articles, and it's an offence to offer them for sale unless they have been tested any certified.

However that won't stop most people here on Ozbargain from recommending that everyone uses them.

        • @llama: Purchased these before and got an email that my order was sent back to the seller as it couldn't get past customs.

You can always get them at IKEA. 2pk for $2.50

          Safe and legal.

        • @rekabkram: Only if they're not hidden in lamp shade or similar.

  • Is this bright enough to be the main light bulb for a room or only good for a lamp?

    • 600 lumens is more than enough… assuming this really reaches 600 lumens. ;)

    • +1

is this bright enough to be the main light bulb for a room

That's a question that nobody can answer. 600 Lumens is not much light, about the same as a old 60W incandescent bulb.

I don't think the rating is very reliable, and my guess is that it's a theoretical value based on all 3 LED chips running 100% flat out. That will not apply if you have it mixed to a normal "white" light, and it especially will not apply if you have it in "colour mode".

So, I'd say that it's a nice toy but only for effects.

      • yeah agreed, 600lumens is probably even closer to 50watt incandescent bulb. So, yeah, more suited to a lamp then lighting a room from a ceiling fixture.

That said, even the wemo globes are only marginally brighter at 10watts (700lumens) and are twice the price and only a single colour! Again, really only suited as a secondary light source.

        • OK, thanks for the feedback! These bulbs do look interesting though.

  • Just an FYI, code is for one discount, so if you want more than one, you will have to checkout multiple times.

  • With PayPal's exchange rate, the item costs AUD$28.97.

    • $28.58 for me

  • So I grabbed the original one of these via an OZB deal, only a few months ago, and already the wifi won't register via the app, which I had to sideload onto my android device and now basically crashes all the time. Not ragging on Xiaomi or anything here, because I found the Mi Band to be an excellent starter fitness band, but the original Yeelight has been super flaky for me.

Anyone had a better experience with this one? The colour shifting is really appealing, but if it's going to stop working in a few months I don't see the point.

  • it's said 5-7 days shipping. so does it come with tracking + registered post?

    • Free shipping will take 3-4 weeks after processing. It comes with tracking.

      • international tracking?

        • +1

Until it reaches Australia. Auspost are good at not updating it until it arrives at your doorstep.

  • I'd buy this if it supported IFTTT.

  • Hey rep,

Any idea if the (plastic?) top is removable?

We have some really 'short' bathroom vanity fittings.

    • It's not removable.

      • Ah well, I'll still find a use for them elsewhere in the house =)

Do any of the app(s) have an 'alarm' feature to slowly increase the brightness (from 0-100 over a few-several minutes)?

  • How on earth do I set these up? I have the Mi Home app installed.

comments above say a gateway device is not needed

    Edit: ANDROID ONLY.

Rep, how do iPhone users go about compensation for this issue?

    • Search for Yeelight in the app store.

      • Which app? Mi Home does not support the YeeLight on iOS.

        • @Clear: It's the MiHome app on Android, why would it be a different named app on iOS?

As stated everywhere, this is the WiFi model (although I have a feeling it uses bluetooth for the initial configuration). I do not believe it is a "Blue" model - which are all 100% bluetooth.

        • @Lukian: Yeelight is the name of the bulb. I'll confirm it with Geekbuying.

  • +1

Note: These require/request a firmware update on first setup.

  • +2

Ok…. Received this yesterday and have set it up.

The app you need for either android or ios is Mi Home .

I couldn't get the thing setup on android, and had to use my iPad to get it functioning. Now once connected to the home network, the android app works fine.

The globe itself isn't as bright as I though. It only emits 9watts in bright white light mode. Any attempt the colour the light will result in significantly less light output.

    • +1

I got this today i got it set up in around 5 minutes on android. Pretty pleased with it given Phillips and other prices

    • +1

Couldn't find that app on the iPad… do you have a link? I found MiHome on Android and that located the light bulb.

      Found it: https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/mi-home-make-your-phone-cent…

      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xiaomi.sma…

      • MiHome is an iPhone app, so you need to select "iphone only " in the drop down box. But it sounds as if you've sorted it!

My only disappointment with this globe is that it doesn't remember the last colour selected if you turn the light off at the switch. if switching it this way it defaults to bright white (6500k).

        • I'm having some issues sadly… three of four bulbs have arrived, and one refuses to pair no matter how many times I reset it. I've tried on my phone and my iPad - do you reckon I've got a dud?

Edit: fixed it… my router had max of five devices connected, changed to 10 and all fixed.

Edit2: tbh I find them quite bright. Maybe I have small rooms?? :P

        • @kwchaz:

LOL…..maybe because you have four bulbs (and I only have one)!

        • @ash2000:

Ahaha I didn't put them all in the same room (and I only have three, fourth one is AWOL :( :( :()…
