Samsung Galaxy S7 32GB on 24mth Plan with 8GB Data Per Month for $70/Month + "Free" Gear VR @ Virgin Mobile

860

My first deal, and I never expected it to be for a mobile phone plan but there you go.

Seems quite a decent deal, Galaxy S7 with 8gig of data per month for 70 bucks a month over 24 months on virgin mobile (Optus MVNO).

So that's $1,680 over the term. The phone is worth about $800, meaning your paying $880 for the service, or $37/month with 8GB of data. Plus you get a free Gear VR.
Seems like a good deal to me!

    Good first post.

Can you please update the Store with an @VirginMobile into the Title

  • I wouldnt sign up with Virgin Mobile if you paid me

    • +17

      Why wouldn't you?

I would totally do it if you paid me. Even if I don't use it, at least I can use it to subsidise my phone service with another carrier? :)

I know you're just trying to say they suck…

    • For what reason do you not like Virgin Mobile? I was thinking of getting on their 11gb $50 plan switching from Telstra

      • +5

        RIP coverage.

        • Located in Victoria where Optus was ahead of Telstra for a while…

        • Never had any problems while with Virgin Mobile in Brisbane.

          Switched to telstra -
          1) The didn't send the sim out for over a month
          2) Porting stuff up
          3) Sign up bonus not applied properly
          4) Plan allowances not applied properly
          5) Constant random phone diverts

though it ended up being mega cheap cause of the compensations……

        • @blehgg:

Dont know how they make any money! Epic stuff ups with my home package ended up with around 800 odd worth of credits for the hassle.

    • +3

I'm Virgin for years. Cheaper than Optus with same coverage. <3
If I were rich, I would go for Telstra but for now I don't have any complains at all :D

      • +18

        Are you still Virgin?

        • +6

With the alternative being Telstra, whose customers have recently been well and truly f…..

        • +1

          @banana365:

I am one of those (profanity) Telstra customers and still am.

        • He wouldn't be if he were rich.

        • Still with Virgin and still Virgin, thank you LOL

    • +1

I'm with Virgin Mobile for the last 2 years and I haven't had any problems with coverage. I live in Melbourne metropolitan areas, and when I was in the basement at The Emporium, I was getting decent reception while my friend had no reception (she's with Telstra).

      • yeah I live along the Sandringham line tried all 3 carriers ….. same coverage none work in stations so,it's bangs per Buck unless you have a tried and proven need for a specific carrier need for coverage rather than marketing hype .

    • +1

been with virgin for 4 years never had a problem , i think its more dependent where you live/work on what carriers are good/bad for you.

  • +1

Galaxy s7 24mth plan @virginmobile with 8gig data per month for $70PM +"free" gear vr

Terribly formatted but it's your first deal and it seems pretty decent so I'll give you a + for that.

Only significant disadvantage I can think of is being locked in for 24 months.. but that's the case with all these sorts of contracts (and I'm a pretty anti-contract person).

    • +1

I have a feeling this deal was submitted from a mobile :)

'+' from me, seems like a good deal.

      • Haha probably.. but surely almost all phones these days do auto capitalisation though?

    • Virgin don't charge you a fee for cancelling your contract early you just pay out the remainder of your handset

      • Yes but how much is handset repayment.

  • also maybe put the VR is via redemption from samsung via https://www.samsung.com.au/promotions/gear-vr-offer/Register…

    • Redemption should be pretty quick - I went to a Samsung shop today in Highpoint shopping centre and they had 60 Gear VR hanging on the shelf.

      • +1

Wtf, u can redeem via a store?! I filled out the online thing and still waiting for it to be approved

        • You can't, last time I went to store and they told me this process has to be done online.

  • What happens when I upgrade an existing service? Can I do it with 6 months left? Thanks!

    • +1

Give them a call. I have 4 months left and rang them up. They told me I can upgrade with 3 months left so will just get in before the expiry…. if I haven't screwed myself over with insufficient stock by then of course!

    • Any luck with virgin? I'm in the same boat and was going to give it a try.

      • I found that if you login to your account there is a section there where you can ask for an upgrade. They wouldn't let me do it with 6 months left.

  • +1

I have found Virgin mobile excellent and rate them higher than optus who I have been on a plan with prior. Their customer service is great, wait times less and plans are better value in my experience.

  • -5

    Would have to be free.

  • Just wondering if anyone have use both carriers before, how is Virgin compared with Vodafone in terms of quality of network, support, etc.. Vodafone have the almost identical deal just 1 Gb data different.

    • Interesting for highlighting to comparison. I think in that case you would have to clearly consider Vodafone to be the superior choice because of the investment they have made over recent years in light of the Vodafail situation. Your 7GB is more likely to come in faster and with a wider coverage than on Virgin's inferior network.

      • Last I heard Optus network was still bigger than Vodafone?

        • It might be bigger for 3G and 2G, however I have used Optus before and I felt their 4G connection is not as strong as Vodafone. With Voda, living in Victoria, I get good 4G signal at most places. I have not use Virgin before and it is interesting to know that it uses Optus network.

      • there's only 3 carriers virgin resells other people's network.

    • In Melbourne I found Vodafone to be better, always lots of dead spots and slow internet speeds with Optus (probably because they sell their network to a ridiculous number of MVNOs).

  • How come "Free" is in quotation marks? Are there other conditions to meet in order to qualify for the VR headset?

    • +3

I think because it's not exactly free, you're still paying for it one way or another.

    • +1

Just free by redemption… the quotation marks are just my own cynical view that it really just means "already calculated in Samsung's profit margin".

  • What's up with the S7 having only a 12MP camera? How does it compare with the 20MP+ Sony put in their xperia z phones?

    • +3

Way better in low light and absolutely kills them for focus speed (I have a Z2 and an S7)

      • Not really a fair comparison between the Z2 and the S7. Regardless, I would agree that the cameras in the S6 and S7 have been far better than Sony's offerings.

    • +2

Not sure about how it is in comparison to Sony but it is much better then 16MP camera they had it in Samsung galaxy S5. I know because i upgraded from S5 to S7 edge 2 weeks ago and camera is definitely superior, actually can't find any fault in the phone so far

    • +2

its not all about the size

      • its not all about the size

In this case it is somewhat…

All other things being equal, lower pixel count means larger pixels, which in turn generally means better light gathering abilities ;-)

        • +4

lower pixel count doesnt mean there will be larger pixels…

        • @astarman:

Hence why I said "All other things being equal" ;-)

I was getting at the fact that many manufacturers have gone for less, but bigger, pixels on a similar sized camera module, in the hope of improving low light capabilities. Bigger sized light gathering elements can make a difference…

Reducing the megapixel count, provides an obvious way to increase the pixel size…
Maybe I should have just said "It is about the size of the pixels" :p

    • +3

Have used both and although the Z5 is very good I think the S7 still gives a better picture, especially in low light :)

    • Samsung make the best phone camera on the market. By a margin. Actual replacement for a point and shoot.

    • I've used both, S7 shits all over the Z5 even. Low light is much better, colour is richer, etc.

Megapixels are an arbitrary measure, you're not going to blow up a mobile phone photo to poster size so 12MP is more than enough.

S7 takes the best pictures of any phone I've used (e.g. current models: LG G4, Sony Z3 and Z5, Nexus 6P).

    • If you're interested in low light video, the Z5 seems seems to capture more detail in shadows but the S7 maybe looks more pleasant over all. Comparison here Volume Warning https://youtu.be/kVLET7Quo3w Volume Warning

I have the S7 and I'm disappointed with the camera tbh, seems like a lot of software trickery going on to make photos look brighter without actually capturing more light. Maybe I'm expecting too much compared to my Sony RX100M3 compact camera but they aren't in the same league. Everything looks over-processed from the S7.

I say don't believe the hype, look at direct comparisons and samples and decide for yourself.

  • I'm currently with optus, anyone know the difference between the optus/virgin?

    • +6

YE, Optus is not a Virgin.

    • Virgin is a reseller I believe.

    • +1

Coverage wise? It's exactly the same. You use the Optus APN and everything. Customer service seems about equal to me as well.

Biggest difference I can really tell is that Virgin is a bit cheaper if you don't go over your data cap, Optus is if you do. $10/GB overage on Optus, 5.2c/MB ($52/GB) on Virgin.

      • Sweet, I'm currently on pre-paid OLD woolworths(optus) plan, $30(45days) - 5gb(data rollover) - $500calls - Free SMS
Its either keep this plan and get the S7 outright, or go on this plan

      • Virgin has data add on packs too. Just have to add them before you go over. $5 = 500MB, $10 = 1GB, $20 = 3GB and so on

    • I currently have accounts with Virgin and Optus. Virgin customer service is far, far better. I'll be dropping the Optus account asap and moving it back over to Virgin. Virgin also offers data rollover, which I think is quite useful.

    • Virgin is owned by Optus. Literally identical coverage; I am unsure how re-sellers like Amaysim work, but they may not have identical coverage like Virgin does, so YMMV

    • +1

This can be true for some cheap Samsung phones, though for the S series it's not at all the case. The feel on a Samsung is different to a more raw android experience on a Nexus device, though the S series doesn't feel at all bloated or "hacked together".

      • -3

Yes, it feels like a cobbeled together bunch of apps and changes to appease apple fans. Samsung do not make software, it shows. Surely it isnt hard to image the people who make the actual operating system for the specific devices, end up with a better experience than the people that try to hack the initial code, who only know hardware, not software.

I think people consider the s galaxies good phones because they have never used a real android phone before.

        • Eh, Samsung does mess around with Android a lot, I noticed that from few things I've seen while playing around with TW.

Coming from Galaxy S4 active, I found most of the "bloats" removed on TW on Galaxy S6. I found no reasons that compelled me to root the device (unlike S4 Active). There were few irks I had with Lollipop on S6 which I think both Google and Samsung had its shares in, that said, I think those are fixed on Marshmallow.

That said, I kinda don't see your point on apps being hacked together. Could you please explain it further? Do you mean it in terms of individual apps that Samsung ships their phone with or in terms of OS? In short, could you be more specific?

      • The s7 is faster than the 6p from anecdotal experience. I own both devices.

        • -5

I also own both devices, this is not the case.

See, two can talk utter bs.

        • +1

Do you want me to take a photo of both devices. Honestly touchwiz is fine these days it does not have much bloat like back in the s2/s3 days. Nexus fanboys are probably just salty they are getting a pos cpu for the price and 2nd tier parts.

        • -2

          @gottacatchemall:
I can get a picture of both devices too.
Touchwiz is not fine nowdays, your kidding yourself, the only people who would think that are people who havnt actually used pure android.

    • +1

what if its the Samsung Galaxy Nexus .
omg does that make your logic wrong?

    • I am not a fan of Samsung phones in general. But I don't think you can also claim Motorola phones as being great.

I have the X Style at the moment and the battery life drives me insane. I should've kept my Xperia Z3 instead of buying this new phone. Having to scramble for a charger at 3-4pm is not an ideal situation specially when you're out travelling.

And no, carrying a fast charger around everywhere is not a solution. It's a patch job for a badly configured device. It should have come with 3500mah battery, minimal.

    • Samsung offers Good Lock and several "different" UIs to the stock android. It gives us options to choose and isn't this all about Android after all? I hate some Nexus snubs who pretend that Samsung Tuchwiz is somehow "bad".

  • Virgin's Price is great, but difficult to get the service.

Applied virgin online and stuck with the security check, credit check.
    They work very slow.

Apply on optus, everything confirmed between an hour.

Just got s7 with optus 24months plan $72 6GB only and no rollover :(

    • Can you let me know how you negotiated your s7 plan?
I couldn't get them to budge from the $80 6GB/month.

      • $80 plan - 10% student discount = $72

        is that right??

        • yes u r right

        • Ahhh ok. Thanks :)

  • -6

Meh … S7 isn't that appealing. There were some 10bg plans for $40 a month. I'd rather that and a new iPhone 7.

    • +1

where? can you even get an iphone 6s for $70 a month with 7-8gbs…

    • +1

      Lol the iFail sucks!!

  • Is there diff ROM version ?
    This plan comes with 16GB s7 or 128GB s7?

    • 32gb

    • There's only one size in Australia, 32GB. It's got a MicroSD slot though.

  • For anyone that's processed a purchase when is expected delivery time?

    • Friends typically report a couple days to the door. But they have been known to make mistakes (e.g wrong SIM card and such). Would recommend getting it in store if possible so you know it's all good. But delivery is by all means fine

      • thanks i saw it said 3 days, heres hoping.

  • Few other bonuses with virgin mobile on top of your monthly plan inclusions
    + 1GB Guvera Bonus - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/214554
+ 1GB Second Service Bonus (if you are adding second service to your virgin mobile account) - https://www.virginmobile.com.au/second-service
    + Data Rollover

  • Mmm.. Not bad.. I'll see if S7 can be had for $60/mth with at least 2GB data

  • +2

Last week I was able to get a deal with vodafone 65/m for S7 with 7gb data, I was already on sim only monthly plan (no contract).

    • Same! Me too. The phone was delivered in 3 days.

  • +1

I'm hating these free Samsung Gear deals.. got my s7 in April and these are a reminder why I should avoid being an early adopter =/

      You're welcome

edit: easiest would be to submit a claim, and then send a message to the above-listed email address with your claim number.

      • Thanks so much!!! I guess it will be worth a try, submitted the claim just then =)

        • +1

Apparently due to all the people from March and April applying there's significant delays in getting the Gear VRs sent out. But at least you're getting one!

        • @Bronwyn Bishop: I owe you a beer or something because my claim just got approved! Massive thanks again! =D

        • +1

@Serapis: woohoo :) happy for ya!

    • My wife got her S7E in March, I was one of those pushing Samsung to allow the early adopters, they conceded and I eventually got them to update their registration site to except purchase dates from March & April without having to email them. That said, the type on the site still says from May 1st but it will still except a claim from March/April. :D

  • no international call inclusive. passed.

    • Are you sure? I've had virgin for a whike and it was always included

      • Just had a read, national AND INTERNATIONAL calls included
