I have the R7000 for home and bought one for the office two weeks ago, rock solid performance. Highly recommend it.

    • +1

same I bought R7000 last year at office works for home use almost 9 months - two iPads, wifi tv, laptop and two iPhones works great on same time without any speed lost. Highly recommend it. I paid $259

    • +1

Yep, the R7000 is a great router.

I am running DD-WRT firmware (April 2016 build) and have 30 wired and wireless devices connected here at home.

YAMon runs nicely via USB stick, logging the traffic usage of every device, by hour, day, month.

    • agreed. I can't remember the last time I rebooted it, which is the most important thing for me!

      • +2

Mine is configured to reboot at 5AM every Friday morning.. just in case (since its doing a lot of logging to USB stick).. but yeah overall they are solid.

  • Cheaper at Futu without bonus sd card.

    • & looks like its been matched at wireless1

      • Thanks. Updated.

  • +3

highly recommend the ASUS RT-AC68U. Wireless range is awesome, and the capabilities like NAS, UPNP and traffic analysis/QoS is awesome. Just sad I purchased two weeks ago when cheapest price on ebay was just under $240 :(

    • Can you run YAMon on the ASUS RT-AC68U ? And how do these routers rate against the Linksys WRT1900ACS (Please note the ACS and I don't need Time Machine integration)

  • +1

I have both loaded with merlin firmware. You can't go wrong with either tbh.

    • Any preference? I have an old Asus RT-N66U but was thinking of giving Netgear a shot this time.

      • +1

        Get whichever is cheaper imho.

R7000 has slightly faster processor is the main difference i guess.

      • I think the Asus firmware has features that Merlin for the Netgear doesn't. My understanding is that Merlin WXRT is a port of the Asus firmware. Asus made the Merlin WXRT developers take out certain features because Asus owned the intellectual property. Someone with more knowledge than me may clarify. I've got the Netgear running the Merlin firmware and I'm happy with it. I'd probably get the Asus though at these prices.

    • Can you link me to asuswrt (Merlin) for the D7000? I can't seem to find it.

  • Would any of these be a good upgrade over one of those 2wire ones they give out with telstra? It's a 2wire 2701hgv-w

    • +3

They are in totally different league if you ask me.

    • Added. Thanks.

    • Bought this just last week for $325 welp

  • Ugh. Bought the RT-AC68U for $239 today. Weird that they dropped $9 in a few hours.

    • Futu Online have it for $220 (before discount):
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-RT-AC68U-AC1900-1900Mbps-Dua…

      • Thanks. Updated.

      • Is futu an authorised asus dealer?

      • +1

They were $239 before the sale, then went up to $250 when sale started so I bought one from Wireless1. Now they drop to best ever low of $220. Scoundrels!? :S

  • Nso I have a standard Telstra adsl modem, which one is the best option ? Will just a router do?

  • I'm with TPG, the wifi signal for my tv not working very well, I use a dlink ac750 modem now, I want to know if I use a rounter, would it significantly improve my wifi quality?

    • Wifi has nothing to do with ISP. It may help, but best to check your wireless network for interference (change channels, etc) first.

      • no idea what that is, sometime my tv box can't connect to the internet or connected but still no internet, I the tv box provider said the wifi is not stable. also when I upload sometime it takes a long time and really slow.
        ant suggestion?

    • +2

      sadly not on RT-AC68U

    • The AC-88U looks like mountains all over the place….

  • I'm streaming 1080p videos from my nas to my shield TV wirelessly and I constantly get buffering
Will an upgrade to an AC 5ghz router help?
I'm just using an old netgear n300 modem/router at the moment.

    • Apparently the Shield TV has really good ac wireless, so it should help.

    • There are many factors at play here:

You should consider how big these 1080p videos are, if your nas is beefy enough to serve these up at the required bit rate and so on. If possible, try using the shield with ethernet to your netgear and see if that stops buffering. If it does, one of these will most likely fix your problem :)

      • Just tested a high bitrate 4k video from my nas to the shield TV using a long Ethernet cable (down a set of stairs, so it can't be permanent)
It played pretty well, would probably buffer every 2 minutes, but again this is a high bitrate 4k video, I wouldn't be using anything like this normally.
Played using wifi and it didn't play well
So I assume the nas is up to the job and connecting it to the gigabit ports in these routers would further the performance

  • Asus 68u or the unifi lr ac? Which one will have better range?

  • Does NBN (fttp & fttn) requires modem, or these wifi router will be enough not require a modem?

In addition, I get confused with DSL, VDSL and VDSL2 naming , are they referring to nbn?

    • fttp what i have does not need a modem as that's already installed inside your house somewhere wherever they installed it.

    • Thnx Axelstrife, I also found this info on whirlpool:

NBN is the generic term use for fiber optic services an breaks down into many sub categories which are

      • FTTH ( fiber to the house ) – no modem needed as its part of the install , (As known as FTTP —> fiber to the premises)

      • fttb ( fiber to the basement , aka vdsl ) – needs a vdsl modem

      • fttn ( fiber to the node , aka vdsl ) – needs a vdsl modem

      • cable internet ( telstra and optus ) – needs a cable modem

      • fixed wireless ( skynet ) – no modem needed as its part of the install

      • FTTH ( fiber to the house ) – no modem needed as its part of the install , (As known as FTTP —> fiber to the premises)

Saw it referred to on a tech article as Fiber to the Nerd LOL

  • So I'll be getting fttp nbn.. Do I still need modem/router? Or just router if I have internal house cabling?

    • -8

You would still need a modem. And you would want a router (or a modem router). Your smartphones won't be able to connect to your internal house cabling.

      • +1

FTTP does not need a modem as we already have the NTD box installed inside which you plug the router into.

        I have NBN fttp

        • Wow! I didn't know that. FTTP sounds amazing. Really a bummer not everyone will get it.

        • @ltwo: https://www.tpg.com.au/support/nbn/ntd

here's it what NTD box is.

basically i had 4 ports for 4 separate isp services.
and two ports for 2 phone line

you can plug an Ethernet cable directly from it to your device if you wanted to

    • You'll need a wireless router. But you won't need a modem/router.

      • Good to know. Which is the best option here? The router these days just confused me lol

        • Well, I just ordered the AC68 from this deal. But that was thanks to advice given over forums.

      • But a modem wireless router would still work right?

        • Sure it would. Just that you're paying extra for the modem part that is of no use.

    • +1

Wireless NBN also does not need a modem as like FTTP they supply an NTD.

Just to throw a spanner in the works, when I had Telstra for my NBN they would not give me the SIP settings to setup my VOIP phone on my own router (Asus RT-N66U). They wouldn't even give them to their technician. Which meant that you had to use the telstra router and your normal phone. Probably not a big deal for most people but if you do have a 3rd party router and want to setup VOIP on it you may have problems.

It's possible their policy has changed since I had the problems as most ISPs will give you the SIP settings for VOIP so this is just a headsup.

  • R7000 or RT-AC68U, Which one is better?

    • I would say the R7000. The R7000 beats the AC68U in range in both 2.4ghz and 5ghz. The only thing that the AC68U beats the R7000 is the 2.4ghz output not by much though. I'd rather the range. http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/tools/rankers/router/ranking/…

      • +3

I trust ASUS more than Netgear personally. ASUS has better support.

      • Just setting my 68U up now
Couple of annoying things with the ASUS compared to the netgear
        Can't hide guest wireless SSIDs
Can't set wireless isolation level per SSID

With the TP link it looks as if you can set access restriction to both time and url for device whereas with the ASUS you can only set time based restriction

If someone knows how to hide the guest network please post

  • Anyone know how these compare to the cheaper TP-LINK Archer stuff (C7, C9)?

    • C9 is a good unit but performance is not quite up with the ASUS or Netgear. It is middle of the range, cheaper and probably good enough for many users

  • Finally made my decision and went with the Asus RT-AC68U.
    :)

  • Great price for the Asus RT-AC68U. Been wanting one for a while. Picked up one last night!

  • My ac68u needs to be manually reset every so often, running merlin firmware

    • That's with the latest Merlin? Can you restore back to stock ASUS firmware for warranty?

      • Yeah if I need to I can

  • thanks, currently building a home that has FTTP, so getting the asus RT-AC68U

  • NetGear Nighthawk R7000 Router can't do VOIP right?

    • It doesn't have a VOIP adapter built in. You'd need to buy a VOIP adapter or an IP phone to plug into one of the LAN ports.

  • Which one for nbn I'm with Optus and the wireless signal of the stock modem is crap

  • +2

I have been using an AC68U in bridge mode with my Telstra cable modem for just over a year now, I can't fault the thing. Excellent Wifi reception, solid speeds and very reliable. I can highly recommend one.

    • Thank you for sharing your opinion. I was wondering if you are using stock firmware that came with ASUS or Merlin firmware. Everyone is raving about it. Can you restore to stock if needed?

      • Using stock firmware.

  • Just bought the Asus assuming that this will make the video streaming faster as we currently have problems of speeds when streaming videos. Currently using netcomm wireless nb604 for the last 3 years. Can anyone advise if this router will help redone the problem?
Do I just plug Asus onto the netcomm modem router port or should I buy a new modem as well?

  • -1

Had this, after 3 replacements, gave up on it. Biggest pile of shit for this cost of it, looks just like a fancy router. Maybe just the luck of draw, but it has literally died 3 times. Always the WiFi going bust. First time, the entire wifi module was borked, this was after 2 months using it. Then got a replacement, and the thing kept going on a reboot fun ride. Now the third one, I can't even change the SSID, for some reason every time I do that, I can't connect devices to it, until I reset the damn thing to factory wireless credentials.

I mean I wasn't even setting up anything fancy, couple of wireless connected devices. All default settings as well.

    • +1

      The Asus or netgear?

    • Oh! Should I cancel the asus purchase?

    • +6

Might help if you identify the product you're talking about…

    • +1

Sorry, I was referring to the NetGear, forgot that the deal had other routers.

  • Finally bought this ASUS RT-68U for bridging Telstra Gateway MAX

  • Which one would have better Wifi range for a big house?

    • From reading around the 68U has excellent range and speed for existing n clients, and has a wide ac band for devices going forward, including some proprietary extensions for Broadcom chipsets, with a 50% boost.

I bought one primarily for stable+fast N client usage around a large home, which as I said is apparently top notch. AC seems to have quite a bit of astericks around its use, specifically walls can thump data rates?

  • +1

Spent $35 more on the ASUS RT-AC68U on the 15% eBay sale as I needed a new one and it's worth every penny. Can get WiFi outside the house for about 20 meters. 1080p videos doesn't buffer via Plex over wireless. Not once has it dropped. It's perfect using stock firmware. Haven't even needed to explore custom firmware yet.

  • Is the ac68 sold by futu oz stock with asus warranty? There's nothing on their ebay page confirming this.

    • Futu Online = Shopping Express
IIRC they don't sell grey imports.

  • So I purchased the AC68U yesterday for $191 on Wireless1's Ebay. Is there a way to price match somehow? Or get $15 back?

    • I'm in the same boat.

I've asked Wireless1 to refund me so I can purchase the cheaper one.

We'll see how it goes. I was pretty annoyed that the price dropped after I bought it!

      • Ok, would like to know what happens if you can be bothered.

        • Yeah I will for sure. They're taking their sweet time to respond.
I'm tempted to buy the cheaper one through Futu…but it's risky because Wireless1 might not refund me.

        • @j4ck: For the sake of saving $15? Don't think it will happen because W1 will still be hit for Ebay commission?
I did the same early purchase yesterday from Wireless1 and whilst annoyed, I'm still happy as a pig in poo with the 20% off with Wireless1 deal.

        • +1

          @deltakilo:

Yeah, why not? $15 is $15 and they said they'll refund the difference!

You never know until you ask. And it's OzBargain after all :)

        • +1

          @j4ck: Good score :)

        • Definite extra Brownie points to Wireless1 for customer satisfaction. Gave me refund too on price difference.

  • If you are buying the D7000, for another $8 you can get a 64GB USB 3.0 stick included.

    Netgear D7000 Nighthawk VDSL/ADSL Modem Router + 64GB USB 3.0@ $268

    • That's modem + router remember, not router alone.

      • Yep, that's why the link says "VSDL/ADSL Modem" :)
