Parking Thief - Should You Give in to Them?

So I was at shopping centre carpark looking for parking. A car on my left (right next to me) was about leave. So I tried reverse and wait for the spot. But another woman (and her 2 teenager daughters) pulled right up behind me and deliberately blocked me from reversing. I asked her to move back so I could reverse so the other car can get out, but she wouldn't. So I had to move forward a bit to let the car out. Then, the woman behind me jumped right in and took my spot.

Normally I would just swear it off and move on, but something got a better of me that day. My parents got out of the car and asked her to leave, she would't and said its her parking while her daughters giving us the finger. So my dad stood in the spot and wouldn't let her park either.
Another man drove past and jumped to her aid and screaming at us to leave like he about to punch the sh*t out of me and my parents. He said its her parking and we need to leave, and it's his sister (probably just made up)
Then another lady nearby started calling the police and said we were abusing the woman. Both of them had no idea who stole the parking but automatically came to the woman's aid.
Note: the woman is caucasian and so are both the man and the nearby lady. I'm asian background.
In the end, the security guys came and advised us to give in, they were nice enough to find another parking for us.

So, what would you have done? Should you just give up every time and let them just take your parking? Or would you step out and ask them to go away? Was I at the wrong because the person took my parking was female?

What's the moral of the story? Just give up because you just can't win in this situation.

Just give up and move on. Life is too short, and too many people are selfish, self-centered a#$%holes. You cant fight them all and will just drive yourself insane trying to. People like that don't learn, and you cant educate an idiot.

Hopefully karma will get them one day!

    • +54

And that's what I would normally done 90% of the times. But sometime, you just need to tell them to f*** off.

      • +27

Which only makes the situation worse (as it did in your case). I appreciate it feels good to stand your ground against injustice, but it rarely ends how you want it to. Sometimes its better to just move on and accept that some people are just scum who wont ever learn.

        • That's exactly right. I made me feel a lot worse and nearby people looked at me like I'm the a$$shole.

Just give up and move on.

That is precisely the attitude which enables exploiters to exploit exploitees.

Life is too short, and too many people are selfish, self-centered a#$%holes.

So why not stand up against the problem to benefit people in the future?

You cant fight them all and will just drive yourself insane trying to.

Not if you maintain your composure.

          People like that don't learn,

They won't if people don't bother to stand up to them.

and you cant educate an idiot.

It's difficult but I wouldn't say one can't. One needs to speak to them on their level without lowering themselves to it.

Hopefully karma will get them one day!

          It won't, it doesn't exist.

Which only makes the situation worse (as it did in your case).

OP and his family expressed their discontent, deterred the offender to some degree and were helped to find an alternative. Those were beneficial outcomes.

I appreciate it feels good to stand your ground against injustice, but it rarely ends how you want it to.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't even try. Progress can be made towards the desired end.

I applaud you and your family OP. :)

That's exactly right. I made me feel a lot worse and nearby people looked at me like I'm the a$$shole.

But those people probably didn't have all the facts. Most people here would think that the woman was "the a$$shole".

So don't give much value to what uniformed people think of you. If you know what you did was right, that's far more valuable.

Just say "take it don't worry, I'll key your car later" and drive off.

        • +22

I don't know, Sagiballs…. I'd just not make a fuss, let them park and then go back to key the crap out of the car. Screw the fear, let them have the pain!!! Mauahahahahaa. But jokes aside i'd have just moved on, its not worth the effort of getting out of the car.
@OP: Also, don't reverse park if you know there are cars behind you, you're just holding everyone up, just park normally and you'll avoid these kind of situations. You can't change the idiots around you, you can however adapt your own behavior to minimize the amount of damage they do.

Great idea! Like counting down to a naughty child, you don't actually have to implement the punishment.

I was going to suggest covertly letting the air out of her tyres. It's inconvenient, humorous and shouldn't cause any lasting damage.

        • +6

          @deal seeking missile:

I wouldn't key a car myself because honestly I don't think the punishment fits the crime. And I'd hate it if someone would do it to me for the same.

        • I've used a similar comment arguing over a parking spot.
I told the d!ckhe@d they are very welcome to my parking spot, and go walk off enjoy shopping while I watch over their car to make sure no one rams a shopping trolley into the side their car….
I drove off parked elsewhere, returned with a shopping trolley (just to provoke if needed) to find a different car in that same spot…
          Kudo's to people mentioning:
*Salt, brake fluid, fish sauce, pee, human/animal excrement, use of keys or karma related acts of retribution.

      • +12

Just draw a gigantic doodle in her bonnet using your keys, with spray pointing to the driver side.

Or just move on and find another spot. Scum is everywhere, so choose your battles wisely. That woman was probably just depressed because she let two guys trip into her which resulted in two imbecile daughters.

      • +1

Absolutely agree with you - you gotta do what u gotta do

I cant stand people who just have no public etiquette!! why do people pull stuff like this

I'm sure it doesn't make me any better but similar stuff has happened to me and I've absolutely lost my shit

      • +6

If you want to give someone the pain of knowing they can be got, without actually damaging their car, go into shopping centre buy one large potato and insert on the back of their exhaust pipe, give it a bit of a kick to make sure it is firmly inserted, their car should stall when starting or backfire loudly to shoot the potato out ;)

If in the unlikely event that someone asks what are you are doing, you can say you are playing a joke on a friend.

        • +4

I like the Beverly Hills cop banana in the exhaust better. ;)

    • +7

Well said…You cant educate an idiot….too many out on the road.

    • +24

      This.

Spend time and energy with people that matter.

I have a little mantra with people that cause drama or get my BP up (even at work as well)…. "do not engage!"

Do not engage at their level. Smile and move on. By the next morning, you will long forget the incident.

The times I have decided to stand my ground against passive aggressive people, I may have won the argument in that instance. But I end up thinking about it for ages. And the aggressor doesn't forget!!! Remember these people have been creating this situation for themselves for years and are experts at making situations.

      Smile and steer clear.

Never with trying to change someone else's behaviour. Taking the moral high ground or teaching them a lesson won't work. Imagine the number of people that have tried before you and yet this person still creates the situation.

    • +2

You can be vindictive, and wait around for them to leave and cut their Tyre. Not that I've gone that far but sure have thought about it with such people.

    • Selfish and self centred?

Did Malcolm Turnbull steal your car park? Wouldn't surprise me.

      http://m.smh.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/liberal-…

    • But one can always complaint to either local security of police. If the issue doesn't get sorted, some other person might suffer like the OP.

    • like four screw in tires after she left the car or nice key. karma some need a hand.

    • No Karma needed, If they're decent human being they will remember it , feel guilty & abit anxious right after they took your spot.
Happen to me once as I accidentally took someone's spot who already wait. Didn't realize it as they're quite far away

However they will easily forget & ignore it If they're scum & not human being. WHich mean it doesn't worth your time dealing with those scum because it cause emotional injury + damage.

Sometimes being Passive is better than being Assertive or Aggresive

    • Just smile sweetly at them when they get out of the car and talk calmly to them. Something along the lines of "You know you've done the wrong thing by me. I'm not going to make a scene or do anything about it right now, but I do know exactly what you look like, I have your car registration, a very long memory and many friends with interesting backgrounds" then walk away knowing that this will be at the back of her mind for a lot longer than it will yours.

At no point have you threatened her, you could just be boasting about how many fascinating friends you have, but she'll be worried about just what you meant for days.

    • Perfectly said. Tempted to get this printed on my coffee mug

  • +48

You stood up for yourself and you had every right to. Take comfort OP, that you undoubtedly live a better life than this woman. People who generally treat others with such disrespect usually live bitter and unfulfilling lives.

    • +5

But with the outcome, it wasn't the wise thing to do and I let her dragged me down to her level and it could get worse if the cops showed up. She had other people stood up for her and we didn't.

      • You had video proof though so I reckon you would win if it came to that.

      • +11

it wasn't the wise thing to do and I let her dragged me down to her level

Don't argue with idiots or a**holes, they just drag you down to their level and then beat you with their experience.

        • spot on!

    • -1

      A fact.

    • +3

It's good to stand up for yourself, but it's unwise to argue with a fool, otherwise people may not be able to tell you two apart.

  • +9

I might have a few choice words for them as I drove away, but I would not try and force them to give up the space. Then you are leaving your car in a space, and they know where it is.

I would not provoke someone who can then wait and damage the car. Sure, maybe you have a dashcam or the place has CCTV, and they won't get away with that either, but that is a lot of hassle to go through

    • Yep certainly it wasn't worth the hassle. It's just a parking. But then again, what if it was something else? Where will you draw the line?

      • +8

You could let down one of the tyres, don't think it's a criminal offence.

        • +10

I fell and accidentally hit the car while trying to hold on to something, with a key in my hand haha.

        • @mcp2kpro:

Still responsible to pay the damage.

        • +4

You could let down one of the tyres,

          Why stop at one?

        • That's exactly what my friend did in this situation.

        • You could let down one of the tyres, don't think it's a criminal offence.

See s469 of the QLD Criminal Code (or your state's equivalent) for the crime that is wilful damage.

But you're not actually damaging or destroying property, just removing some free air.

        • @trilby: My mind had obviously jumped to slashing the tyres as this is what this cow deserved. Just letting the air out… much easier to get away with.

    Just leave.

And then go buy a bag of salt. Return to the car. Pour into every crevices around the car and don't forget to peel back the window seals and get it into the doors.

    • What would that do? Just curious…

      • Salt+metal car=rust

        • Hmm… I think that would only work on older cars, cos car bodies would have been galvanised, and painted for the salt to get in. Wouldn't it be better to just throw an egg or two at the radiator grill? Though eggs are probably more expensive than salt.

You can pee up the door handle into one of the holes (on older cars) or into the vents at the firewall/windscreen (need strong bowels), ends up in hard to reach places with a hose. Hard smell to get out for weeks, even better if they have recirculating turned off.

Put shit (dog shit, human shit, koala shit, just as long as is pliable like playdoh) up in the door handle, no one will know until they go to grasp their door handle. Or just smeer it on the inside of the door handle so they dont realise and have a dirty sanchez moment

For the extremist. Get one of these, keep it in the truck with the jumper leads
