Looks nice but still a bit too expensive to me…I think the Acer 3810t 13.4inch $499 is a better deal…even the Toshiba $799 is slightly better as Toshiba is a better brand imo…

    • +2

what make you say that toshiba is better brand?. asus also give you 2 year warranty.

      • when it comes to brands, it doesnt really matter, as they're all the same on the inside, just comes down to the bundled crapware and the reputation for build quality

to ttkc u do know that the acer 3810t runs either a celeron or C2S (forgot which) which is in no way any better than the C2D in this, so for someone who wants some sort of decent power under their hood without the power thirst to go with it, this is pretty good

          You don't think there's a difference between a $799 Toshiba/ASUS and a $499 Acer..
          I'd back the $799 Toshiba/ASUS over a $1400 Acer!

It's not just what's on the inside that counts, it's how it's put together and what case it's put into!

Nice machine, nice specs. I'd trust this over a Toshiba. Also this is 12" which is smaller than the 13+ in Toshiba. This would run rings around any Netbook.

  • No DVD and you have to wonder what you get for the extra $300 compared to the Acer Timeline we saw recently which has 4GB of DDR3 RAM:

2 years warranty, weight. small screen. ASUS quality etc

      • weight: 1.56kg vs 1.6kg
        screen: 12.1" vs 13.3"
        thickness: 25.1/30.9 vs 23.4/28.9 mm

As for the processors I would guess that less than 1 in 5 people who buy this would ever get some real benefit from the extra power when its meant to be an ultra portable model mainly for web browsing and word processing. I agree that Asus has a better reputation for quality than Acer, but now I've got the timeline I'm really very impressed.

        • wow that thickness is a huge difference, weight not so much, but damn the thickness

          • @Trance N Dance: If this is sarcastic, when you put two laptops side by side you'll realise it does… sorry if I'm ranting but an exaggerated comparison is like an old nokia brick vs a smartphone. I'm just making a point here about the apparent lack of bang for your buck as far as the last $300 is concerned.

Also, the Acer Timeline has HDMI.

            • @inherentchoice: no it's not sarcastic
the 40gram weight difference makes little difference
but that thickness is a killer

    • minimal crapware for one
this is designed to be lightweight and small and have long battery life, that's what the price premium is for
and ram these days dont really matter if you have at least 2GB, 3Gb will give u some headroom for normal day to day use, besides ram is easily changed just like a hdd (which also means squat when comparing the performance of a computer, unless it's the spin speed and cache)
it's the processor that u should be worried about

damn, i nearly check ozbargain few times everyday, how come i still missed this acer timeline deal >.<

      • Yeah I can't believe it only got 17 votes. Maybe because it was posted by a rep?

    • 8 hours battery life is the real giant killer, worth the $300 premium alone…

      • +1

        Is that sarcasm?

They both have the same quoted battery life, and I know from experience the Acer easily delivers it - happily going over ten hours when you're just net surfing with the brightness down.

If you don't get it off COTD, you can still get it here for $809. Search for Asus UL20A-2X177V here, http://www.onlinevip.com.au/

  • So this retails for more than $799 normally?

  • no hdmi =(

  • Yup Asus has wayyyy better build quality than Acer.

    • I used to dislike Acer but the quality of the Timeline series is much improved over the old Acers. I was planning to get an Asus and ended up getting the Acer after I tried it out.

  • Isn't Lenovo's deal better & faster?
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/25098

    • it is faster, but we are talking about ultra portable machine here.

I'd rather import a ul30vt, it'll probably cost approx $950 all up but you'll get an 8 cell battery, nvidia G210m card, 4gb DDR3 ram, plus the "turbo" feature which overclocks to 1.7ghz as required.

Far better choice than this UL20A in my opinion.
