Decent price for a quality laptop. Few years old now, but the 2520m doesn't perform far off the newer i5's, just uses a lot more power.

"Seller Refurbished."

$260 for the E6520 if you want 15.6" and a number pad.

  • good for a basic lappy with 8gb ram :) HDD is a bit on the smaller side but if it's just for basic use it's quality

    • 4gb ram*

      • +3

yes! thanks i was reading "maximum supported RAM", papa bless

  • "Seller Refurbished."

Just say used, so budget for a new battery if you want to use it off-grid a lot.
    Nice laptop otherwise.

HDD is a bit on the smaller side

For what? Your movie collection? Anyway, best replacing HDD in a used laptop with a new SSD.

    • exactly, just a used ex-lease laptop from a big company like Telstra, Govt etc.
reformatting and installing win 7 isnt refurbishing.
refurb should mean like new and battery changed on this, 4-5 year old computer.

  • +3

    refurbished in title

    • +3

Used, in title would be better.

      • Probably… I think all they do is re-image them.

        • yep, its still an old 4-5 year old laptop thats been used almost every day and all day.

        • @PVA:

I got a HP elitebook for around that price.

        • @jv:

did the keyboard break on your old notebook?

  • The heading says 4gb of ram however the description of features says 8gb

    • 8gig max capacity, only 4gb installed.

      • You can get another 4GB for it for $20-$30

        • Max RAM is likely 16gb YMMV, contrary to published specs. I've run 16gb in mine for 18 months. You can look around online to verify this.

  • add $55 for 1 yr warranty, what is the warranty if not pay that $55 ?

    • no warranty, used computer so buyer beware.

Also remember that free Win 10 upgrade ends July 29

    • Statutory warranty applies to second-hand goods too, unless purchased at auction.
      In theory.

remove the optical drive and put in a SSD as the primary.

  • +2

Upgrade the Ram and throw in a SSD and you have yourself a good value laptop.
I use the E6220 (12") version that I got second hand. It has 8gb Ram and Core i7. I threw in a solid state and a new battery and it runs really well and will do me for at least another few years. Nothing under $1000 would even come close in terms of performance.

  • NB, they do have E6440s if you want an i5-4300. $749 before discount though.

  • +1

E6420 RAM can be upgraded to 16gb on at least some and maybe all e6420's. I have run 16gb RAM in mine for 18 months.

More RAM and one or two ssds make this machine. Yes you can buy a carrier on amzn and replace the DVD with another ssd drive as DVD is in a removable bay!

Original hdd's in these are infamous for being dogs. If you buy one, job 1 is replacing the HDD. Both memory and HDD are easily upgraded via panels on the underside.

Down side is no built in usb3… If you want that, you have to get a separate card, and due to the card bandwidth you do not get quite USB 3 speeds.

I do photo editing on mine. Ideally you want one with the discrete graphics, not just the Intel graphics, as the Intel graphics tank your Windows score which would otherwise be good with upgraded RAM and ssd.

At this price whatever the graphics, it is a steal.

If you have a tight budget then go for it, but I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy a used computer ever.

    • I'd trust this laptop to be more reliable than some brand new cheap HP laptop. These Dells are solid.

      • Then they should sell these used laptops with a 5 year warranty since they're so reliable and never failed.

  • Wanted to check just how much use these "refurbished" laptops had.

    Sent. question:

    e
Dell Latitude E6420 Core i5-2520m 2.5Ghz 4Gb Win 7 Pro Cheap Laptop Notebook 14". offer.

Can you tell me how many hours have these done (crystal diskinfo can give the readout ).

    Reply:
Sorry we can't give you that information

For me then that made any. buy decision easy.

    • I am tempted but I know how people treat work laptops. I mean just the screens, those non touch matt screens cop a beating from oily fingers and pens.

Hardware wise: not much. The lenovo has a fingerprint reader. Dell one looks a lot nicer, and has a metal exterior if that matters. The IBM doesn't have a HDMI-out like the Dell.

      • cheers donnot. Probably can get display port to HDMI adapter also. Curious about build quality too - always led to believe IBM/Lenovo were pretty sturdy. Want to use it a HTPC and output lossless audio through HDMI - wonder if display port will handle that also???

        • +1

Not sure if audio works over display port.

Can't speak for the T420 but the build quality amd sturdiness of the Dell is top notch. I own the E6520 (the 15.6" model of this), and it's fallen off a table onto brick pavement ~1.2m a couple of times and suffered no issues other than a couple of scratches. Same happened to an Asus laptop and the screen shattered, dented, USB and audio jacks died, and half of the keyboard stopped responding.

EDIT: Seems that the t420 supports display port audio.

    • +1

T420 has better after market support.

  • Thoughts on the HIP elitebook from the same seller?

    i7-2720qm
    8gb ram

    $399—>$320 after 20% off.

other than the battery, seems like a moderately useful unit?

    • Definitely, the 2720QM is a very powerful CPU even by today's standards so if you can manage with the 1366x768 screen, I'd say it's a good deal. Could hook it up to an external monitor and have a decent system.

  • have replaced the hdd with a SSD.
wanting to remove the optical drive and install the mechanical hard drive.
anyone found a suitable bay for this?

    • +1

Something like this looks like it should work. Maybe slide out the optical drive to make sure the layout is the same (the adapter says for the E4300 but should be identical in the E6420 and most laptops).

      • thanks mate! will give it a measure :)

        • Just took out the drive of my E6520 and that should work.

This one shows in the pictures the same connector and positioning as the Dell. The one I listed earlier doesn't have a photo of the back side.
