Umart. Need some computer pieces. Awesome.

    • +3

Umm when I tried to pay for my Philips 40" 4k monitor earlier this year they said they don't accept Amex (West Ryde branch). Just checked their website and it says "Pick Up - You have a choice to pay by VISA,MASRTER or pay cash when you pick up your order."

      • When I checked the website just now, on the Payment page of the Help section, I saw "All prices are for CASH or EFTPOS only. A 3% surcharge for Master, Visa card, AMEX and Paypal."

Actually, I thought that there was a ruling recently that merchants can't surcharge higher than the actual fee from the credit card company. I'm sure that Amex is higher than Visa and Master cards.

        • +7

i think that doesn't get enforced till next year and only applies to businesses of a certain size?

          could be wrong though…

        • @edrift: Nah I think you're right
I can't remember the exact sequence of events but I think one of the new rules might be implemented as of November this year, and then the other one is July next year. Read it on Point Hacks.

        • @illumination:

In terms of charges - "The new rules will be rolled out in two stages. The ban will commence on 1 September 2016 for “large retailers”, and on 1 September 2017 for all other merchants. Large retailers are defined as either having gross revenue of more than $25 million, the value of its assets is more than $12.5 million, or it employs more than 50 people." Don't know if Umart falls into this category

        • @jasyoung:
I was under the impression the rule was ' charge up to what the purcher won't accept ie what the market will bear.' oh that was Banks and ..

      • +4

I can confirm QLD - UMart Eight Mile Plains branch accepts Amex.

    • +1

Computer Alliance and Videopro are also on the list. But they may only be in Brisbane?

    • Come to think of it, does Umart even take amex? I don't remember there was that option when paying in person

      • -6

As a true ozbargainer you would never pay Amex at Umart because "A 3% surcharge for Master ,Visa card ,AMEX and Paypal".
However, you'll probably be better off to if you're using this deal, so long as you're not spending too much.

    • $209 for a 500gb Samsung evo = $179 after credit. Cheaper than the current Ebay promo

They dont list AmEx as a payment option though :(

  • +2

Pretty useless if you're not in Sydney unfortunately.

    • +1

I think that applies to a lot of things in Australia.

      • +2

yeh like 7pm lockout laws….from nanny mike baird

        • +3

With nannys like millionaire Malcolm and millionaire Mike, who needs enemies?

    • In my experience, acceptance of AmEx cards by non-major retailers outside Sydney and Melbourne is pretty low. Gold Coast is almost zero, as was Port Macquarie when we were there on the weekend. Can anyone from the other cities indicate acceptance levels there?

      • +4
        • This list is not reliable even for Sydney CBD. Many shops in the list and they don't accept Amex.

    • And the Sunshine State. Oh well more credit card balances to spend elsewhere. Not for wife's eyes this comment is.

  • +1

wasn't worth it til I saw umart. Thanks OP.

  • How do you pronounce "L'Occitane"?

  • +1

    umart… yay!! maybe a PC upgrade then… :)

  • Ts and C's say in store only. I think a lot of people will order online and expect a rebate. Very shady.

    • +1

It should be added to the title, but its pretty normal for Amex to have online or in store only. Also sometimes even though it specifically states online or instore, the way the merchant has set up its payment systems means sometimes you can still be eligible for the credit even if you pay online.

      • +1

Trudat - unfortunately you don't know until too late. I thought they normally make it clearer in the promo material (I only saw it hidden in the T's and C's).

        • deal updated :)

note that online/phone can appear same as in-store, such as with dish'd previously in shop small

  • wow, Umart and Computer Alliance
    suprisingly great deal for Amex

  • Yes saw that instore as well for those 2 computer places :/
Hopefully someome buys online and posts the results here :-)

    • +2

I thought all umart sales were "online", it used to be you'd rock up at the store to buy something and if you hadnt preordered they'd direct you to a terminal to enter your order "online instore" Has it changed?

      • I think that's it's referring to where the payment is made (online or in-store). You can still pay in-store (I usually do).

      • im wondering if it will work if you used paypal to checkout with your amex?

        i saw this http://www.computeralliance.com.au/parts?id=13482

which is a great deal if $30 off at about 42cents per gb. which is rare for a 5tb+ single drive

but $19 delivery ruins it :(

        • +2

wont work because it will be charged through paypal, rather than the retailer. Hence it won't trigger the cashback

  • Useful for your tax return if you have two American express cards. H&R block will split your transaction across two cards

    • Yeh, I did that last year. Hopefully, my accountant can finish my tax before 31/07. They are usually busy day these days.

  • Umart takes surcharges for CC card, surely more for Amex cards, but still great deal

  • -1

Opal recharge possibly anywhere? The list otherwise is pretty useless for me.

  • Hmm Luna Park eh. Damn them, annual pass is $99.
Wonder if you can get LP to just charge a dollar more, call it a 'tip'… $70 is a pretty good deal for unlimited lunacy

    • I don't see why not. I've specifically asked to be charged extra before and if they ask you can just be honest. It doesn't affect them and if anything should benefit them seeing as they get extra money anyway lol

    • +2

      Buy a $100 gift card

    • I thought you could get the $30 if you purchase online, so I went to order and they charge a credit card surcharge which brings the $99 pass to $100.73. On the website it says "Luna Park Sydney is charged a fee to process all credit card and PayWave payments. As a result a credit card surcharge of 1.75% applies to all online purchases. This surcharge can be avoided by purchasing at a Luna Park Sydney Ticket Box using cash, EFTPOS or redeeming a Gift Card." I don't know if they charge the surcharge when you buy at Luna Park using Amex though?

Good I checked here first, otherwise I wouldn't have got the $30 if I ordered online.

      • Oh great news.
So can you confirm the $30 rebate came through ok buying it online?

        • No it doesn't apply online, only at the actual venue.

  • +1

    Quite a Sydney centric list.

  • Op, need to update the description, "up to 3 different participant merchants." which is important.

    • never mind, just read again 5 times to get the hang of it of "once per merchant"

  • TIL Minsky's serves food.
I assumed the carpets were sticky from spilled drinks, but is suppose it could be ground in food scraps.

  • +3

Does any of the partecipating merchants sell visa gift cards or similar?

  • +2

Online transactions and phone orders are excluded.

    Well that sucks

  • +1

Videopro has the Bose QC25 on sale at the moment. With the deal, it works out to be $304

    • if you're dying for the QC35s it's not a bad deal too for something so new.

  • H&R Block, just in time for my tax return this year.

  • umart

But they charge a fee for AMEX

  • -1

Too bad the surcharge and shipping negates most of the discount.

    • +2

Shipping? It says online transactions are excluded.

      • Curious how Amex are going to know if it was collected or shipped, wouldn't it just come up as a one line charge on the statement either way

        • paid online = online transaction :)

  • +5

Combine TGI Fridays with Entertainment book buy one get one free vouchers to save even more

  • H&R Block - hellz yeah, tax time!

  • Has anyone tried splitting a payment over multiple cards at umart or computer alliance? Are they okay with that?

    • Hardly they will do that, especially computer stores. Depends on the sales person, if you're lucky they will go all the trouble for you.

    • +1

I'll probably give it a swing in the next few weeks. ;)

Explaining why, and being prepared in advance having worked out the total amount including the AMEX surcharge, and how much you want each individual transaction to be, will probably make the person serving you more likely to help - and ultimately it's not like it costs them anything.

      • Bit late I know, but I was able to use multiple payments at UMart Milton. Young lass was a bit unsure at first but another bloke there told her to go ahead and do it.

Rebates haven't posted yet though (couple of days later). Interestingly I only got one "thanks for using your offer" email for each card even though there were multiple transactions.

  • Intel 535 240GB SSD for $80.16 (include 2% surcharge) from Computer Alliance. (similar price at Umart)

    http://www.computeralliance.com.au/parts?id=14955

  • Which is the Goldleaf restaurant? There's one in the Docklands and one in Springvale Vic.

    • +1

      All six of them.

      • Cheers for that. Btw where did you find that info? I couldn't find any details on Amex site. Also, I wonder if all of them count as one merchant, meaning you can't get cashback from two branches?

        • Sorry, thought you meant which Goldleaf restaurant would take the deal. Personally between the wife and I, we have 7 AmEx cards so we are covered for all of them with spare change. Hopefully you have a few cards of your own. I suspect you can only use it once per card.

        • @danielh:
As many of the merchants in this deal are based in NSW, I wasn't sure if the Goldleaf restaurant is the one in Vic and I couldn't find an address for it from the Amex site.

    • If anyone had success from Gold Leaf steam boat in Dockland, can u plz post here. Thanks

  • Hmm m50x for $170 from umart with this deal + 3% surcharge of course. If you can get them to split the transaction with another $1+ item maybe even better.

  • Im interest to get the new Bose QC35, would be interesting to see if Bose or Video Pro will split the payment into 4 x $100 slot ( i have two Amex cards)!! Tell them its win win situation :)

    • Yes, done it with breeze at BOSE and loving it!!!

      • If you had 2 cards this would bring down the cost to $379 for QC35. Has anyone actually done it successfully?

        • I have 4 cards so it was $449 - 4 * $30 = $329

        • Bose have these listed as $499 now, was that a limited special?

        • -delete-

        • @n1ck: not all Bose stores have that special price, but apparently some Bose stores can pricematch (e.g. audiotrend as posted on ozbargain).

  • +2

Since it says 'Redeem the offer once per participating Merchant, up to 3 times' does that mean I can use the same card at 3 different locations of the same company (eg videopro or bose) and be eligible for the cashback at each store?

  • -1

Redeem the offer once per participating Mid Year Merchant, up to 3 times. Exclusions apply.

Bit confused by this statement. Can you go to the same merchant 3 times, or only once?

    • +3

      It's perfectly clear:
"Redeem the offer once per participating Merchant, up to 3 times."

That means max 3 claims from 3 different merchants.

    • +4

Just to fully clarify this, I emailed Amex and they said that different store locations aren't considered different merchants; e.g. you can't get this offer from 3 different Umart stores as they are considered the same by Amex.

  • +1

Umart has a surcharge of 2-3% (can't remember exactly) for credit cards so keep that in mind.

  • max cards registered already >,<"

  • +1

Yeah WTF max cards already! :(
