  • What's the appeal of the Surface Book compared to the Pro?

Genuinely asking because I had a look over the weekend and the hinge design is hopeless. So much wasted space when closed that it's not really that compact.

I mean, there is such a big gap between the screen and the keyboard that just makes the closed position unnecessarily bulky.

That is not a necessarily a bad thing. Keys on thin laptops (ultrabooks at least) often rub on the screen. Over time they rub into the screen marking it.

At least that has been my experience.

A big problem with detachable laptops like that is that the screen angle can only go back so far before the whole thing tips over because it's top-heavy. The ones I've used always don't lean back far enough for comfortable use.

With this design, the base of the laptop effectively becomes larger as you open the hinge, so the screen can lean back farther without the whole thing tipping.

      • good point - the model at JB was fixed to the bench, so didn't pick up on that aspect.

      Pros:
The sb is bigger than sp4.
The sb is lighter than sp4 in tablet form.
The sb in laptop mode is more stable than sp4.
The sb has dgpu in high cost setup.
      The sb has better keyboard.

      Cons:
      You have basically covered.

      • Thanks for the info.
I'll have to look at it again - currently I prefer the form factor of the Surface Pro, but I'm seeing the advantage now of the SB.

      • Battery life is much better in SB (in laptop mode, but rubbish in tablet mode). Also, the trackpad is very good on the SB.

    • The hinge does make it quite big compared to Macbooks and the Surface Pro. But because the surface book is a detachable, I think it is a good compromise for people that want tablet capability and a full laptop experience.

I agree, the gap isn't optimal, but it adds less than a cm to the closed height on that end and coming from chunkier laptops, I personally still find it a lightweight and slim device. I think they may find a way to get rid of the gap altogether by the 2nd or 3rd generation Surface Book but for now it's here to stay.

I loved the Surface Pro and found it to be a great device when trying out, but I still wanted a full laptop experience. Lapability is still an important point to me and I just couldn't see myself using a Pro on my lap on the bus or train.

Also the Book has better battery life than the Pro, I manage to get 6-13 hours depending on my use, while I would get roughly 25% less with the Pro. I got the Surface Book so I would never have to worry about getting through my longest uni days without running out of power and I've never ran out.

    • They have cheaper options you know. Still too much for my budget though

They have cheaper options you know.

Yep, but the one in the link takes you straight to the 5K one… I almost had a heart attack…

  • It's cheaper if anyone wants to get it. will ask them if this apply to cashrewards.

    • It's cheaper if anyone wants to get it

      where ?

        i mean this post.

It took MS 3 generations to get surface pro right. And 4 gen to perfect it.

I will pass the 1st gen surface book thanks.

Actually you can look at the surface book as being a branch off the Surface Pro line, therefore it has all the learning of Surface Pro built it, so it isn't really a true 1st gen.

There were some software teething issues early on when they released it, but then again all laptops with the new intel chips had the same issues in regards to standby / sleep.

Therefore now is actually the best time to get the Surface Book because pretty much all the firmware / software issues are sorted.

  • dont wanna be too picky but even if it is "4.8% cashrewards cash back" - it would likely be 4.8% from the reduced amount… therefore 4.8x0.85 which is 4.08% plus the 15% off it makes 19.08% off. However I might be wrong, i.e. I bought galaxy s7 in the recent ebay 20% off deal @ good guys and they have given me an invoice with the full amount, not mentioning the 20% discount whatsoever - going overseas in a few days will see how much I actually score at TRS :)

    • Yes you are right. 4.8% off the reduced price.

I bought from Jb Hifi Surface Book at 10% last week and today I show then the deal, they happily refunded 5% in gift cards.

    • And thats why JB is awesome and why i own there shares! Everyone loves JBH

  • Can it be stacked with the student discount?

    • Microsoft sales rep said no via the chat function. :(

  • Isn't JB at $1899 still cheaper?

    • Yep totally is. I think JB is only having a sale on the basic i5 128 gb model though

  • is this sale because the next version is expected to come out soon?
