You can also get TGG or HN to price match JB and pay with AMEX for $50 rebate if registered for these offers.

  • +7

No kidding, this 3 years old product holds its value very well.
    Edit: 2.5 years old.

    • +1

Same here. Had mine for same period and going strong. Only downside is storage of apps is difficult with a 16gb.

      • Thought storage was expandable on s5?

        • -5

You can't move apps to SD. It's a side effect of Samsungs Knox tech

        • @scrimshaw: what version of Android are you running? Ive been able to move quite a few of my apps on my S5 running Android 6.01

        • +2

          @scrimshaw:

Yes you can. Not all of them but most of them & your phone doesn't need to be rooted. Ive got a S5 - G900i

You go into settings > applications and click on each application and it will have 'move to sd card'. The ones you can't move will be greyed out.

        • @Kaboda: Did you purchase that in Australia? Just checking if we can upgrade? Some apps can't be moved which gets annoying

        • +1

@tight-ass: This only moves some of the data on my S5, not the whole app and so storage is still a huge issue for me. I only have 5.0 though, and press g software update says everything is up to date?

          https://imgur.com/WxZlnJA

        • @scrimshaw:

Yes you can though it gets moved back to the phone's memory when the apps gets updated. It gets tendious having to move these back over to the sd card after each update.

        • +1

@markj: no I didn't I bought it refurbished online. You can always resort to rooting and using using apps2sd

        • +2

@tight-ass: Yes that is correct. However with non root Lollipop each time your app gets an update it reverts back to Phone Memory. A real pain in the tight-ass. Then of course there's a build up of cache you have to manually clear if you get the "out of memory" message when installing updates.

For light app users 16GB is ample but definitely 32GB should be the minimum for future phones.

    • i still have mine, great phone, just moves on for a bigger screen (QHD) when they did the motorola for $300 at voda, but else its a great phone, and has better band coverage than those chinese phones for the same price, and it's water proof.

  • +6

damn good phone s6 was a failure. s7 is back on track. i like versatility

    • u didnt mention the overheating and battery drain doe

      • +7

I like my S6m why was it a failure?

        • No microSD expansion. That is a huge piece of crap that apple likes to pull off. Charging $200 more for extra 16GB of storage when the actual chip itself cost a few $ to buy and assemble.

Also not a lot of hardware improvements for the +$300 price difference.

  • Nice phone with lots of features like IR blaster, NFC, removable battery and external storage. Rotate is slow and so is camera with standard app.

My Telstra S5 is still on Lollipop but we're told it will get MM… one day. This is a good price. Not sure if T shop is still selling for $600.

    • My Korean s5 is on Mm.

      • How are those LTE bands?

        • better than xiaoami's we always seem being spruced on gear best, ali express etc.

        • Seems to work on the optus network.

          It's model gs 900k

        • +1

It'd be the Telstra one, so model 9001:

          LTE band 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 28(700), 40(2300) - G900I

That's about as good as you need for Australian carriers :-)
          Err, Kaboda, Gsmarena don't list a "k"]

        • @terrys:

Ultimately, all Samsung Galaxy phones are Korean in one sense or another, but I think Kaboda meant that his was a variant released for the Korean market, specifically for KT Telecom. My Note 3 was for SK Telecom, another Korean carrier, and it has just band 3 and band 5 of the Australian bands. Good if I'm with Voda, but I'm not.

        • @strangeloops66:

Ah right - tho I'd be surprised if JB was selling the Korean market model given that they are a Telstra reseller. I'd dived on to Gsmarena, then had a hunt around the traps for what model Telstra had offered.

    • optus are still flogging it off for a high 600 price tag.

  • -1

one of the only phones with an sd card?

    • +10

      No?

    • Sony Xperia Z5, LG G5, Galaxy S7, HTC 10, Moto Z, Huawei P9, Zenfone 3 Deluxe all have microsd slot and are their companies' flagship phones.

  • Does JB or HN price match Mobileciti?

    • JB does

  • +1

Good phone, but AWFUL camera unless outdoors in bright sunlight.

    • +1

Yup camera is the worst. Main reason for selling my partner s5 and got her LG G4. She loves it only downside is the battery.

    • I wouldn't say the camera is awful. I played around with the settings and it is taking great pictures (in most conditions)

    • +1

agreed - the camera doesn't perform the best, depending a lot on the lighting conditions. Shots can disappointingly come out blurry, despite tweaking the stock camera app settings.

  • +4

    Lagathon.

  • +8

A decent deal, I purchased my SGS4 3 years ago for this price and the S5 only now hitting that price point.

Problem is, do you want this fairly old tech, or put it towards something like the new One Plus 3 which is roughly ~$550.00?

Only $150 more and the One Plus 3 will annihilate the S5 in every area except external storage - but 64GB aint bad…

    • +1

      where can you buy one?

    • +2

I'm thinking even what about something like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, Note 3, or Xiaomi Note Pro?
These are all cheaper. Arguably slightly different product as the ones I've mentioned all have ~5.5" screen but I think I'd rather get those, especially when you consider the fact that they are cheaper than this too.

    • Lol where can you walk into a store and purchase a local stock OP3 for $550? You can't even get it online for that amount lmao

  • well i think i have found my upgrade.

been going along with my note 2 for some time now and i think it deserves an upgrade.

funny thing my MiL needs a new phone too and i dare say this phone is perfect for her…. shes rocking a sony xperia e1

  • +1

I have this phone - it is a pretty solid performer but, as some others have said, the camera is oddly bad. That said, with the updated google camera app it seems to work much much better.

  • +2

If only I bought this instead of my WP

  • Damn, only 16gb? What about the others? Is there expandable space?

    • yes there is like all samsung devices bar the s6 versions.

on my note 2 with only 16gb space i have some big games on there that i have some data to the sd card which is a 64gb sized one, apps wise i do have here maps (the beta versions) with 750mb map pack as well.
16gb….. 11gb of user space isnt too bad as some might think.

  • +3

Got mine for $150 second hand on eBay. Easy to root and install marshmallow cyanogenmod. One shortcoming of thr update is no heart rate monitor gimic. It runs smoothly although it has a quarter the score on geekbench compared to S7. I highly recommend it but I don't think that price is great.

    • Got a refurbished one from Asia for ~$290. I had CM but went back to stock when 6.0 came out for my model (G900T). Having CM gives you a Nexus-like experience and having the fingerprint sensor working is a big plus.

      • Fingerprint sensor does work on Cyanogenmod 13/Marshmellow (my build is 13.020160517-NIGHTLY-kltedv). I've only noticed the heart rate monitor not working but later builds may have fixed that.

        • Yeah the developers don't have access to the coding and stuff required for the heart rate monitor to work. This used to be the case with the fingerprint scanner.

  • +5

I just cant recommend this phone for $400.
Finally got rid of my wife's S5, it was so slow, even with the latest Lollipop and a fresh wipe and rebuild.
Its so full of bloat and 2GB ram just doesnt cut it, the snapdragon 801 is holding well given its age, but its not fast my modern standards. The only thing going for it is the SD card and the nice AMOLED screen. The plastic build is as bad as it gets, the highly scratchable fake chrome plastic around the edges looks shocking when its older than a month too.

That said, it was a good phone, in early 2014.

    • +1

That's weird because I have an S5 running Android version 5.0 and it has never been slow. Is it possible that the updates are what slow them down? I really have no idea. I don't understand why the phone would be slow after a reboot? Can anyone explain why we are having the opposite experience?

      • I didnt say anything about a reboot, but if you are talking about your phone then of course its going to be slower after a reboot, thats basic computing, the RAM is flushed and everything is reloaded…

I suspect we have different levels of what fast it. Ive owned or tested about 20 smartphones in the past couple of years and im a computer engineer and i build Android ROMs for fun, i can tell you there is a lot of Samsung services/apps running the background and it causes most things to be ejected from the RAM constantly and need to be reloaded, thats why its sso much slower than modern phones with more RAM and less services/apps.

      • +1

Yeah mine hasn't slowed either. It's been almost a year and haven't had any problems with it.
The other guy seems like full of crap mainly because there are worse and cheaper phones which make the S5 NOT "as bad as it gets". Remember this is coming from someone who's "tested about 20 smartphones". They mustn't have taken care of it if they've scratched it so bad within a month.
And what the hell is a "computer engineer"? What uni offers such a degree?
That sounds like the equivalent of saying I graduated in Arts and not specifying a major because it's THAT vague.
AFAIK, most of the top uni's only offer electrical eng/ comp sci / electronic eng / software eng / mechatronics eng / comp & network systems ; ones which sound remotely similar and actually exist

    • Was slow as hell on Lollipop. The MM update has improved the speed and performance dramatically. Then god knows how long until Australian carriers will release the update.

  • How can I upgrade it to Marshmallow?

What I used. Make sure you get the right image for your device model number.
If you haven't rooted or flashed a phone before I'd do some reading and watch some videos on it first.
If your not confident then don't do it; you will have to wait until your provider pushes the update to your phone instead.

  • So if the s5 is bad, and the s6 is also bad (according to these posts), the only viable option is the s7? Any other good phones selling cheap at the moment (<$500/400)

    • ask this question on www.whirlpool.net.au discussion forums - you'll get a million answers :)

    • Most Samsung phones are a laggy mess bad. Look around ozbargain for other phone deals with 100+ votes and you'll be right. Some examples for around $500 would be the LG g4 heaps better camera and better specs. The newer oneplus three, Xiaomi mi5 and something cheaper would be the redmi note 3 pro.

  • How does this compare to a Nexus 5?

i like the fact that it is IP rated, expandable storage and removeable battery.

      • Thanks for that. Seems to be pretty much same-gen tech as the Nexus 5, so not much of an upgrade there. Might wait for something newer to drop to this price range.

        • i think from the comparable table the s5 is at the bottom of benchmark tests but from looking at the big picture it has a lot more to offer if you are after that sort of stuff.

    • +2

If you've got the N5, stick with it. The GS5 will feel very slow in comparison once you get past the initial 'break-in' period.

    • Had a Nexus 5, worst smartphone I have ever owned. The 4 replacements they sent me all had issues as well and had a lot of trouble getting a refund from them. Bought an S5 and it's still going strong. Highly recommend getting one over a Nexus brand phone.

    • Slightly better camera. But everything else is much worst. The s5 is a laggy mess whereas the nexus 5 is still smooth as silk up there with the latest phone. I've owned both phones. Specs does not show the whole story.

  • Really tempted to replace my s3…

  • +4

I can't help but think that a phone 2 generations removed from current should be cheaper than this, perhaps sub $300.

  • I love my S5, upgraded from a S3 in December last year.

    • Also, just bought one for the missus at Officeworks with the 5% price match on top.

Note: 2 black left at Five Dock (Sydney)

  • +1

Thanks for this OP. Rang OW and got them to price beat - so paid $379.05! Now I've got to cancel the one I ordered from OW on Friday for $425.60, price beating HN (its on its way to my local store, so can't cancel it while its in transit).

  • +8

checked in hoppers crossing HN store, store supervisor informed they can't price match with JB, though initially the store rep told me that he can do price match it !!!!

Later reached out to HN website online chat, got the help from the help desk rep after sharing the JB's online deal and was able to order two mobile phones (only black & white available) using my two amex cards.

Latest update : Both the phones are ready to be picked up from the same store (Hopp crossing HN store) where they said they can't price match it :-)

    • +5

Latest update : Both the phones are ready to be picked up from the same store (Hopp crossing HN store) where they said they can't price match it :-)

Hoping that the same guy hand the phones to you

    • Why are they not willing to price match though? I'm pretty sure it fully satisfies their own price match policy..

  • -2

    2GB of ram? Really?

    • You should have said those words when they were announced, not 2/3 years later.

      • This 'deal' is posted now, not 2/3 years ago. I have 3GB of ram on my LG G4, and it occasionally lags. There is a reason why this is cheap. If you're already willing to spend $400, spend that little more and get something more recent. And if you're saying that you don't need a good phone, then why are you spending $400?

  • +1

I'd say a OnePlus One makes more sense for $386 with free express post. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/OnePlus-One-Black-64GB-13MP-camer…

You get 64GB of eMMC (albeit no microSD slot), 3GB of RAM, a nicer build, way better speakers, and faster Android updates.

It is bigger though, which some may not like (there's always the OnePlus X), and you lose the waterproofing.

There's also no Band 28, which is unfortunate. It's a choice between cellular coverage, and features/specs.

  • +1

The waterproofing of the S5 seems pretty good. I accidentally left mine in my jeans pocket when I put it in the wash and it survived a complete cycle! Also used it when snorkeling off some Pacific islands on my last cruise 4 months ago. Soaked it in fresh water for 10 minutes to flush out the sticky salt water and it's been going as good as new ever since.

  • 2 left at Jamison home centre. 1 white 1 blue

  • got mine thanks OP GST free. Well once I leave the country next month I'll use the TRS.

  • Who did vote this for 399? Really? (I have s5 but this is not a very great deal

  • +1

Thanks op, put my parents on to this deal, they picked up the last two units from maroochydore officeworks with pricebeat😊 may be some better phones around this price, but for people like my parents who want low hassle and peace of mind of 2yr aussie warranty, this is a great phone for this price

  • +1

One good thing about this phone is it's the last galaxy that has tons of support for different ROMs

  • +2

For this price you might as well buy a top of the range Xiaomi phone

    • One thing that puts me off China droids is the lack of LTE bands that I want.

Were I live I see that my note 2 suffers whereas my zte fit doesn't even sweat and the spped tests show it.

      • This older s5 doesn't have all the bands either. Lte band support is about equal with this phone.

        • s5 G900I LTE

          LTE band 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 28(700), 40(2300) - G900I

          xiaomi redmi 3 pro LTE

          LTE band 1(2100), 3(1800), 7(2600), 38(2600), 39(1900), 40(2300), 41(2500)

          note 2 n7105

          LTE band 3(1800), 7(2600), 8(900), 20(800) - N7105

so the s5 has band 28 that is a key band in optuss network.
