  • Overpriced.

      Better price is where?

I've been looking to get some plugs like this and also light sockets so I can remotely trigger lights and appliances and set profiles for travelling instead of messing around with timers and lamps.

    • Well I can't find it cheaper (not that I can find many sources for it). Care to explain? Or are you just comparing it to the Belkin Wemo which is a totally different product.

    • +2

Can you provide an example of who in Oz sells a Zwave (AU frequency) switch cheaper?

A different technology product does not count or mean this is not a bargain for what it is.
A lot of people have Zwave networks in their home for motion sensors, door/window sensors, smart controllers, light switches etc, and may not want to use a different technology product (like Belkin WeMo) for 1 power point..

    • +1

agree. I am currently using xiaomi smart home. way cheaper. about AUD$17 each. and you can mix and match so many cool stuff like plug/motion/temperature etc. banggood have most of their collection.

      • What radio technology do these use? I saw mention of an optional "Ray sensor Zigbee modules".
Would be good if they use Zigbee, as it works worldwide, although still an issue for people with Zwave controllers that dont do Zigbee.

Is the Xiaomi Smart Home gear certified / legal for use in Australia ?

        • +1

I remember one or two of their products have a zigbee version but mostly use their own proprietary tech. while they work excellent from the smartphone app (both android/ios) there are no open APIs for interoperability, say ifttt. That's the only complaint I have. I am not sure about the Australian certification but their products are generally of very good quality, and comparable to wemo.

  • +2

For that price I would expect it to be a 4/6 port powerboard with individual 'smart' outlets. Not worth it for 1 outlet

  • Just think - 71 dollars and 20 cents later you will no longer need to get off your couch to flick a switch.

BTW - If you're looking just to control an appliance with a remote there are heaps of cheaper options. BUT they will most likely not be z-wave.
ALDI have a good remote and 4 points set that pops up every now and then.

  • Lol i like the babysitter description on their website.

    • I know right, i was like.. that sounds dumb.

      • Becoming less relevant now that every kid has a battery powered device!

        • If my kid was so stupid they couldn't use another power plug I'd disown him / her.

  • I can see how this would be useful but this write up seems dumb..

    Safety.

"such as leaking air conditioners and fridges, when they fail."

What does this have to do with this?

  • You can get a Belkin Wemo switch for $55 from Futu. Officeworks sell them for $69. I have a few in my house. Very reliable, and a trusted name brand.

    • +2

      That is a different technology.

      • Oh really? How so?

        • This is a z-wave product. Wemo is not.

        • @hcca: Hells bells, thanks, just had a quick read up on that technology. Damn - there is too much going on in the tech world for me to keep up - lol. Yes, they are different indeed.

  • You wont actually save vampire drain money on these will you? I mean the highest appliance I have is an amp that drains 5w when it's off. Everything else complies with the <1w standby drain

  • This is confusing, "Control it via remote from up to 150 metres away from anywhere in the world via a smart phone or tablet."?

  • +4

I got one of these at home: http://www.banggood.com/BroadLink-SP-Mini-WiFi-Smart-Home-So…

Works really well. Can't use remote control to control it, but the app on my phone works really well. And I can put a timer on it.

  • rep how does this product automatically turn off fridges or air con when they fail?

    • Can be linked up with a flood sensor - these are quite an expandable system.

  • +1

All Z-wave devices require a controller or gateway of some kind to enable all of their functionality. Z-wave water or flood sensors are also available and could be used to identify a problem (sense water from a leak) and then respond by turning any device on or off any device as well as send a notification of the problem.

    • pretty misleading description then really

  • +4

Well, I am impressed… Not by the price, I still think these things are a rip either way, but impressed by what they do…

For everyone out there complaining about Wemo being cheaper and to those getting their hackles up because "they're not the same thing…" I did some research for both groups, because until now, I didn't know what a z-wave was either…

So far, I have found that the Z-wave stuff has a load more options. It's more of a monitoring system as well as a triggering system. There are so many other things you can control with it than just sockets. But!, the price of this system and the set up is astronomical! It also requires a base station that all the z-wave devices talk back to… If you were to "really" automate your home, this appears to be the type of thing you would use…

If all you wanted to do was turn on a desk lamp or a fan on and off and wanted to use existing hardware to do it, Wemo cough rip off cough or one of the other countless wifi devices on the market would better suit your needs.

In closing the TL;DR is this, if you have z-wave already or are looking at full house automation and system monitoring, this is what you would get. If you want to turn on your tv while you are in Bali, get a Wemo.

    Aeon Labs Z-Wave website

    • It's not that bad - certainly not "astronomical". Personally I think that the wall plugs should be somewhere around $40-50, but there is so little available to the Australian market that there really isn't a lot of choice.

Also, it's modular, so you can buy a controller (as cheap as $60-70 for a usb stick) and then just add the switches etc whenever you want, but yes, if you just want to control one light or something, this is not the system for you.

If you were thinking of wanting to automate a few things in your house (eg. air conditioner, garage door, a few lights etc), then z-wave is a superior and relatively inexpensive system.

No problem, if you use voucher code 'fibaro20oz' you can save 20% off that item. Please note we are very low on stock of the Fibaro dimmers and only have 4 left in stock. Happy to take back orders but the item will not be available again until the end of next week.

    • Great - thanks so much. I've ordered the 4 in stock and will order more assuming testing works out in my house.

  • +1

It's time people stop comparing Z-wave to the more consumer grade wifi/rf products. As an individual product, sure at face value it may appear to be the same, but Z-wave as an automation 'solution' is streets ahead of anything you could throw together with a few wemo or likewise modules. Horses for courses but before you start mouthing off about the price of Z-wave products, start looking at the cost of Clipsal C-bus. Because that is more the level of functionality that it should be compared with.

Incidentally, yes this is a good deal.

at home i use raspi3 ($65) with RF controller ($2 ebay) hooked up (no soldering needed) - this guide https://timleland.com/wireless-power-outlets/
then buy RF outlets like these ones ($45 for 4 outlets) - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/4-x-Remote-Control-Power-Points-P…

and bit of computer skills, boom, $100+ you'll get very simple basic automation. if you want to make it more awesome, hook it up with https://home-assistant.io/. bam you'll have a smart home :)

with this set up is unfortunately only 1 way communication.

Im happy to share bit of notes I have when setting up mine at home, just PM me.

  • Hi rep, what about a deal on Fibaro movement detectors and all the other stuff: how do I buy the dimmers if they are out of stock?

And to anyone thinking about these products, the quality and functionality of the Aeon stuff and the Fibaro stuff is mind boggling. With Wave you can operate anything in your home from anywhere in the world. It is seamless and amazing. Furthermore, both products continuously monitor and feedback line voltage and current usage

  • +1

Hi oraserat, we have changed the Fibaro dimmers to allow for backorders, stock arriving late next week. We have also created a discount code for 15% off everything. Code is 'ozbargain15' and is limited to 5 uses, thanks

  • thanks REP
