$200- $400 Phone for 13 Year Old

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a decent phone for my tech savy 13 year old? She is currently using my old iPhone 4 which has an unreliable battery and she can't get the latest apps because the phone can only run an old IOS.

She has asked for a Xiomi Redmi but I really have no idea which one to get and was a little put off by posts around flashing the ROM/bootloader but maybe I have no need to do this at all? Plus I can't tell the difference between Prime, Pro, Note etc!

She plays music, Skypes, plays games on her phone etc.

Could someone suggest which one I should get for her?

Many thanks!

      (hijacking top post)

Dnkei just gave away an iPhone 6S Plus 64gb for free, maybe contact him if he has another one

      • not cool :)

    • +1

Agree; got one for the wife recently also. Great phone. In fact, I ended up getting a Z5C as a result. Sony has upped the anti major…

  • -6

    Maybe a Nexus 6 or LG G3

Or if you are willing to spend a bit more … The OnePlus 3

    Avoid Xiaomi

    • +4

Avoid Xiaomi and buy a phone that is best known for "boot loop"!

      • +4

That's the G4, not the G3 that has the issue.

        • -1

It also has a lesser known problem where WIFI and Bluetooth both either become intermittent or outright die. First one died in 3 months and replaced by JB Hi Fi with a new phone. Then less than 6 months later the replacement developed the same fault and of course this time it has to be sent off. So I'm back to my old Samsung Galaxy S4 till I get it back. 2 days and I'm already feeling withdrawl symptoms. It's a real pity that the LG G4 has this flaw because despite some quirks when it's working it's actually a pretty great phone.

        • -2

The g3 is garbage, I have one.

      • Mate, not all G4 phones have the issue and it's been resolved now anyway. Barring that point, it's one of the best Android phones in the market for its price.

    • +12

Avoid Xiaomi? Why? We have two users in our house and the phones have been excellent and terrific value.

    • Why Xiaomi? I've gone out of mine way to get the latest one from China when it first came out and rooted for english firmware and appshop and it's been one of the greatest phones I've had compare to other cheap android ones you get here, which goes spastic after it gets a little full. The great thing is you can use almost all the storage it cames with.

They do have knockoffs I guess, which could be carp.

But for the price you can't really go wrong, even if you lose it it's only like $100-$150 bucks, just get a new one.

      • Not sure if Xiaomi are better phones than LG G3, G4 and G5 though.

  • +8

    Wow I wish I could have had a $400 phone when I was 13.

    • +14

I said I would pay for a $200 phone if she worked really hard and improved her grades. I am just not wanting to lock myself into buying a cheaper phone that may not be suitable or last. If we end up getting a phone towards the $400 mark, she will need to contribute some money from her birthday/Christmas money :)

      • +5

Cheap phones can last as long as expensive ones. As long as you take care of it…

LG Optimus 4x HD still ticking.

        • First gen galaxy s still ticking too.

        • @fm:

Have Samsung Omnia (the one before Galaxy S) to current Galaxy s7, all still ticking =)

        • @Serapis: gold!

    • +7

My daughter is also 13 and has been moaning about wanting an iphone, not because she knows anything about phones beyond the basics, but because several of her friends have them. A typical apple customer I guess.

I said no way are you getting a $1,000 phone you may break or lose (already lost one phone before). However a friend of my wife has a water damaged iphone 6 128GB and the apple store say they will provide a brand new replacement for $400. She already has a new phone so has handed this opportunity to us, instead of the obvious route of buying it and then selling on herself at a handsome profit. So we get to stop the moaning and acquire a phone that still sells for around $1,000 for $400.

      Win win.

      • That's really great

        • Now an expectation has set though, what happens when the iPhone 7 comes out?

        • +8

          She can get a job!

I worked in a school and I had an LG G2. At that time..G4 wasn't out yet, but lots of kids were owning top-notch high end $500 phones like Galaxy S4's and $700 iPhone 5s's. On top of their phones, the seniors had Dell Latitudes (worth 1.5k each, specced with SSD's and Core i5's) and the juniors use iPad Air.

Then again, this is a private Catholic school and the parents have money to burn. And the annual tuition fees are 19K so I guess a $500 expenditure on a phone isn't too farfetched..

Still, 12 to 14 year olds with phones twice as expensive as mine, you have to wonder if it's out of neccessity or just wanting to 'keep up with the joneses'

        • Totally not needed I agree. She has been using a Xiaomi Redmi 2 for about 18 months and its been great. No problems at all and is still going strong. Not 'cool' enough though… Will be a fine back up to keep in a drawer if anyone's phone dies or goes missing.

There is definitely an element of being seen with these things, especially when it comes to Apple stuff. Lots of kids have the latest phones that retail for well over a grand. Its ludicrous as they only have basic usage needs, its all about being seen with them. Obviously it is not the kids that buy these things so parents are driving it.

I would never pay full price for an iphone for her, but getting one at this price I can accept. Now to find a sturdy case for the delicate looking thing. If she loses or breaks it, back to the Redmi 2 for another year!

        • -1

Still, 12 to 14 year olds with phones twice as expensive as mine, you have to wonder if it's out of neccessity or just wanting to 'keep up with the joneses'

Definitely the latter + pester power.

I'm surprised children flashing about their $2k worth of gadgets on the bus aren't targeted by thieves. :|

        • To give my kids humility, I'm giving them a windows phone.

Note my kid can't talk yet 😀

Get it for yourself and relegate your old one… It's still a 1k phone, even if you get it for 400…

  • Flashing Xiaomi Rom is really easy in my experience - I was worried about this too, but took about 10 minutes total.

    IMO Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro - $230 for 16 gig - $260 for 32 gig

We have two teenagers with phones in our place.
I have purchased them cheap supermarket androids, all less than $100.
One kid is very rough with her phones and typically has cracked screens etc.
    The other is very responsible.
They both want iphones. The cracked screen girl saved her wages and recently bought an iphone SE. So far she is looking after it well.
The other kid doesn't work, so can't get what he wants yet. He is rooting his phone and installing alternative firmware etc. to get the most out of what he has.

Both these things really impress me as a parent.
I think if I just gave them costlier devices they wouldn't have shown these initiatives. My ozbargain way is to try and get the best value out of things, and I think this is working so far for them.

    • I like your son more…

    • That's good parenting, and you teach them to look after their property and the value of things.

  • +3

I gave my 12yo my old Nexus 4. The dreadful battery life also makes sure she doesn't spend too much time on the phone :P

Maybe looking for a Lenovo K3 Note? They were popular on OzBargain a year ago, and are around $100 USD on Aliexpress these days.

    • +1

yes, a Lenovo K3 Note. I've been using one for the last 6 months. great phone. decent camera (except in low light). I haven't flashed the ROM and it's still the best china droid I've owned. just travelled 2 weeks in Japan using it and it was great.

and as Scotty states - US$100 on aliexpress

  • My 15 and 12 year olds both have second hand iPhone 5's and they are great…good battery life and work well with their school iPads . We paid about $350 on eBay…might be a bit cheaper now :))

  • Get her a Xiaomi Mi Max, $298 now.Giant screen with Great battery, good for gaming.

On seconds thought it maybe too big for 13 years old
what about Sony Z3 compact $330
    http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/Mobile-Phones/9355/i.html?_from=R…

or Xiaomi Mi 5 its the flagship of the brand and it has International Edition. Within budget you need to wait for the special but its selling for $430 atm.

Generally Mi series has better quality/update than red-mi series.

    or iPhone 5s for $399
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/iphone-5s

  • I will attest that the sony z series are great phones,
    water resistant and robust,
although gaming kills the battery in the long run

    • Running Z5C atm; "best" phone I've ever had.

Moto G - 3rd edition. Bought for as low as 220 - last ozbargain deal. Great phone for the price!

    • I have a Moto G 2nd gen, also a fantastic phone for the cheaper end of the spectrum.

  • -1

I don't see $250 worth of difference between some of the sub $100 units and dearer ones mentioned here, do some of them brew coffee now?… my kids $390 phones are as fast as my $39 phone.

  • I'm looking at the new Vernee Thor for my 13 year old daughter. Sounds like it's well made and has some good reviews.
About $166AUD from many places including gearbest.

    http://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_343579.html

    • +1

Not a bad phone. Won't get great coverage if you're with Telstra (lack of 850MHz 3G support), but should be good with Optus/Vodafone.

  • Easy choice if you want to spend about $350. Fantastic phone that will do everything you need. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/255255

  • Got my son 13 as well a xiaomi redmi 3 pro.
He loves it. Hasn't touched his iPad since.

  • +2

I bet there will be one catch, it must play Pokemon Go….. This will kill the battery of any phone.

    • In this case Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 pro is the only one that can last long enough for battery but takes ages to charge.

Pokémon Go is the craze. Your kids grades will go down the drill. Bad Nintendo + Steve Jobs causing pedestrians not looking on the roads.

The new drugs on the street is Pokémon

      • +2

Dude, Steve Jobs has been dead for quite some time.

        • +1

So he can't defend himself? Perfect!

  • +2

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Am leaning towards Xiami Redmi Note 3 Prime despite my concerns about having to flash the ROM. Is $169 US for unflashed version https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/255165.

    • you should consider that Xiaomi Redmi 3 Pro also as it is newer by about 3 months and has a bigger battery size with a smaller screen. I personally think a phone with a 5.5 inch screen is way too big for a child to use. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/256563

      • I agree it may be too big but Redmi 3 pro come with Snapdragon 616 which is alot weaker than Snapdragon 650.

Also the Redmi Note 3 retains CPU - Helio X10 on your link is not a good choice, but I am not sure its performance.

Sony Z3 compact is a better choice with Snapdragon 801 and 4.7" screen which is just a bit weaker than 650 I believe in term of gaming. But downside is its $330 AUD on eBay.

        Side note:
Do Not buy any phone with Snapdragon 615,616,617 or 625 for gaming.
        At OP's price range, should target on Snapdragon 650, 652, 800, 801, 805, 808, 810

  • +4

Moto g3 or moto g4 is a really good phone for under $200

  • -2

Maltopia… before researching for a phone, let us know what you want out of it.

Do you want her to use the phone rarely, to improve her grades?
Windows Phone. Very boring, lack of quality and quantity apps.
Suggestion: Microsoft Lumia 650 (New ~$250)

Do you want a very easy, no-headache experience?
Grab an iPhone. In particularly make sure it has a 64-bit chip, as the rest are obsolete.
    Suggestion: Apple iPhone 5S 32GB (Used ~$350)

Do you want a complicated experience that could frustrate her, but might also lead her to learning?
Grab an Android. She can learn about hardware and software. About drivers, kernels, APIs, ROMs, MODs, Apps, etc etc.
    Suggestion Cheapest: (~$160) Xiaomi Redmi 3 (16GB)
Suggestion Midtier: (~$290) Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro 4GX Int Ver (32GB)
    Suggestion Used: (~$480) Nexus 6P 16GB
    Suggestion Expensive: (~$400) Nexus 5X 32GB

But feel free to see what's out there in terms of variety!

    • -1

Haha wtf, you have to learn about drivers, kernels, apis, roms, mods, if you use an android phone?

      Funniest thing I ever heard.

Next time don't buy a cheap chinese import, then you won't have to do all that.

      • +1

        Learn to read properly.
Not "have to learn"… but it reads "she can learn".

And by the way, learning = good thing (if you ask me).
        Are you against learning ?!?

I wasn't advocating any particular OS or phone.
That's why there are phones listed from the top three ecosystems.
If I posted only Android phones, that could be represented as biased.
And I also did a quick OzBargain/Gumtree/eBay search for price brackets of each suggestion.
Why? Because I was helping the OP, unlike you're post which had NOTHING to add to the matter.

    • Spot the Apple fanboy.

About drivers, kernels, APIs, ROMs, MODs, Apps, etc etc.

Unless you are trying to install CM on an unsupported phone, you literally just pick an android phone up and use it.

      • So I guess you are from the Master Race, and you're against learning too.
You made assumptions about what I said, and the assumption made an ass-of-u.

Because I literally said "she can learn", pegging it as an advantage.

Is it more complicated than iOS?
Definitely. But that complexity is needed.
For instance, I like having to choose custom actions and default applications.
Complexity can be bad for some, can be good for some….that was the point on its own.

The "could frustrate" is just that … could frustrate.
Because some builds have bugs. Some software is incompatible. And some devices lack documentation and sources.
That's the frustration part, and in no part, does that mean ALL android devices are frustrating to use.
And since when is frustration a bad thing?? Life is full of frustrations, its all about how you handle them!!

So Android devices = its a personal preference!
Some prefer iOS, others get satisfaction from the learning experience!

I'm sure Maltopia can read better than you both, and make a decision.

        • After glossing over the fact that buying into Apple gets you into an ecosystem of expensive probable future upgrades, you positioned android as "a complicated experience that could frustrate her". You didn't put any conditionality on that. The above responses are not surprising to me at all.

Android devices, in my experience, are perfectly easy to use. They only get complicated in the way your characterisation implies when the user makes a definite choice to delve into the guts of things.

        • @3 Hyenas:
Ummm, its not just Apple. Buying into the Windows or Android ecosystem can be expensive.
The trick is to be smart with your money, and spend it how you please.

Android is easy for me to use as well. Hell, I've been at it since 1.6 Donut.
          They are more complicated full-stop.

That can mean it is a little bit more complicated, or a lot more complicated.
As you said, it depends on what you do. And I don't mean complicated just because of MODs.
Even day-to-day use is different and a bit more complicated. Sometimes moreso, I've given a quick example.

Don't try to read in-the-lines, or make some assumptions, take what I've said at face value.
(And again, complexity = good for some people / bad for some people)

Why are you trying to steer the OP away from iPhones?
I was at least open with my message saying, look, you have options and here's what they look like.
I can see you're biased against Apple.
I was too at one point, but none of that matters. That's the best thing about an open market :D

Again, this has gone waaaay off-topic.
I hope we can go back on topic, and actually help the OP !!!

        Brilliant spot Brouw3r

  • EBay is doing as new Motorola play for about $250. Or a second hand samsung s5.

  • Pain free if you buy another iPhone 5s for $399

  • +1

I gave my 13 yr old son a nexus 4 from a deal posted on ozbargain. He is always on the phone texting, instagraming or watching you tube. I told him when the phone breaks he will be upgrading to a Nokia E5 blackberry lookalike non smart phone. The same phone that I use for work oncall support. Hahaha thanks Dad.

    • Good strategy for teaching your kids how to look after their things :-)

  • Following. My daughter is turning 13 next month and needs a new phone.

  • +1

The local stock oppo phones (JB Hi-Fi) seem to have pretty good specs for price. I have only played with them and they seem pretty quick, however I can't vouch for them.

  • Similar situation recently. Fixed by the 5s for $399 deal mentioned in a couple of previous comments. Is it now the 'norm' for 13 year olds to have far more expensive phones than their parents, or are we being tricked? :)

  • +1

    Lumia 950 or 950 XL.

    Excellent camera.
    Easy to use.
A bit more durable that most phones. Can be knocked about a bit more.

Can't get all the apps on the apple or android stores, so it won't cost much to run as she won't be able to buy all the 'must have' apps.

No official Snapchat or Tinder apps, so some additional piece of mind there.

  • +2

LG nexus 5X is a good phone for the price https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/lg-nexus-5x

  • I have a 32GB iPhone 5S myself. If the 20% off eBay tech sales were still on, I would have upgraded myself to a 6S and given her my 5S as the most preferred option.

  • $99 Lumia 640 locked to Optus networks (Amaysim etc).
    Leaves $100 - $300 for extra Ritalin.

  • Motorola Moto X Play or Google Nexus 5x are brand new phones that can be had for sub $400 which I believe are both quite good. I'm still using my Galaxy Note 3 after 3 years and it's still going pretty well, and can also be had for sub $400, might be a bit big for her though.

  • Some decent suggestions in the thread. I do suggest taking her to the store and putting a few phones in her hand to get an idea of the physical dimensions.

A lot of these androids run at 5 inches and when I was 13 that would have been annoyingly fat to hold awaits peepee jokes

  • What about the OPPO R7s?

Can be had for under 400.

4G/LTE, Dual Sim, 4GB RAM, Octa-core. VOOC charging. 5 minutes gives you 2 hours talk time.

I switched to one not long ago from an Lumia 930 and I love it. Build quality is very good. Good bang for buck imo.

  • Buy her a budget Microsoft Lumia. She can access all the popular social media apps and it takes pretty good photos. Easy to use and works well with Microsoft Office.
A Windows phone will be my next phone. My S7 Edge is the best smartphone I have ever used and by my most measures the best in the world, but I don't see the point in spending over $1000 again. I don't utilise the phone to its potential.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/mobile/phones/all#order_by=l…

  • I've got two kids at later stages of high school and one in grade six. We bought cheap new android phones for the older two when they reached year 7. However they both hated those phones but they did however look after them. So when the eldest reached year 8 he both wanted an iPhone. At first I bought one an iPhone 4S second hand. It latest well for a year then they sold that and upgraded themselves to a 5 for not much more. We couldn't be happier with the phones. They have been kept in a good case with glass screen protector and are still good as new. So when it comes time to update again they will still be worth good $.
My youngest in grade 6 has been given my old Samsung S4 and he is happy with that, but then again he hardly uses it yet as he has a Nexus tablet for playing on.

So my advice is: go for a 2nd hand iPhone. It will cost the same the same or less than a new cheap Android model, but it should last longer. Plus you will have more chance of selling it later on.

  • +1

nexus 5x or second hand iPhone 5s 32gb

  • So many choices! Redmi looks attractive for its price and has great battery, but will take time to ship over, inferior warranty/RMA, and also may have to flash to international ROM to get OTA updates.

Her grandma has a Redmi (5.5 inch I think) and I will get my daughter to spend some time with it to see if it is too big for her hands and wallet - thanks for that suggestion.

Bought my 13 yo brother a oppo f1 its cheap at 200 locked to optus or 300 unlocked from jb i think, otherwise go with the r7 or r7s from oppo again great value orientated phones and you always have the option to return it to the store in case you have issues with warranty etc. Just put a launcher like google now launcher or nova launcher as their UI is a bit to iphone like for me. the R7s is 5.2 inches and the R7 is 5 inch so not to big either both hit the sweet spot in terms of size for me the cheaper f1 is also 5 inch just lacks the power the r7s and r7 have

  • Moto G (3rd gen)

  • Samsung Galaxy J1. It's like a poor mans S series. $180 can't go wrong for a 13 year old.

Overpriced because of Samsung logo. 768 MB of RAM, 480px display, 4GB of internal storage… Don't buy that please. I wouldn't even consider using that as my backup phone.

  • Another vote for the Motorola G 3rd Gen for $200. Officeworks will price beat Kogan (https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/motorola-moto-g-3rd-gen-xt1541-…).

    • That's awesome if Officeworks will price beat it! Did you do this yourself? Any chance you please could pm me the receipt for me to show them?
