52x Computing/Memory eBay 20% off Deals @ Various Sellers (Links Inside)

Just thought I'd give this post another run since there's some more decent prices this eBay promotion. Thought compiling this post would be easy as I already had the last post at my disposal, but turns out that I still had to spend time removing/adding items, and trying to make sure that the link points to the cheapest available.

Apprecaite your effort but is this a duplicate of https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/257684?

    • +14

Not a dupe as this is a deal post rather than the coupon code post.

      • Could put a deal in the title, just to be sure? Definitely wouldn't be a dupe then. Wouldn't want the effort to go to waste.
Cheers for the compilation of details though.

This is against Australian consumer law. Please screenshot/archive.is this where you see it and let the ACCC know.

    • +5

Link for your claim about breach of consumer law under ACCC?

In lodging a complaint, people will need to show the particular rule that is claimed to be broken here, if they expect the ACCC to examine the complaint.

My understanding is the retailer may change their price or temporally withdraw product, as they are not offering the discount. That's how markets work, and shows how subsidies (by eBay in this case) distort markets.

It is eBay that is offering the discount - a different business. Disappointing - yes, but not ACCC territory.

That's very different to a business promoting it's own discount, but bumping up it's prices - a breach of consumer law. That's deceptive practice & works against the market.

      • +5

What a load of shi*t. You do not need to quote consumer law to the ACCC, they drafted most of it!. Just give them the evidence and your opinion. It's easy to lodge a complaint, everyone should do it. I've done it a few times when I've seen retailers doing the wrong thing.

As to the get-out-of-jail ebay/retailer explanation. That is a complete load of bollocks. You are right, apportioning % blame might be difficult depending on what the retailer and eBay knew in planning the deal. Something for the ACCC and courts to sort out. This is why it's important to submit the details of where you believe a breach of the law has occurred. They (ACCC) have extensive powers to investigate claims of misleading or deceptive conduct.

As it stands, I think it's clearly misleading to promote this 20% off deal where items have increased in price. This is abundantly clear in consumer law.
        https://www.accc.gov.au/publications/advertising-selling/adv…

Read that and I don't know how you could argue otherwise.

You are however correct about withdrawing a product. A retailer can withdraw a product from a sale. However, a retailer could not re-list that product at a higher price during the sale.

        • +1

See 2014 Forum discussing this issue - same old, same old…

As you have made numerous complaints to the ACCC, how many have been successful? That is led to the business being prosecuted (very rare), or more likely having to change its practices?

You don't need to tell the ACCC which section of the act you believe had been breached, but it helps. But you will need to show how your complaint breached a consumer law for any potential action to take place. In filing a complaint, you usually will be asked to state the section in which you think a breach occurred - on the form from memory. If it falls outside the ACCC bounds, they can't investigate complaints. If it falls within their area, most times it won't be investigated unless of public interest.

As for your abundantly clear in consumer law link - as I outlined earlier, that is for a discount offered by the 1 business, that also sells the product. That does not apply when the discount is offered by another business, other than the one providing the product & independently setting the price. So doesn't apply here.

In this case, eBay is subsidising the purchase from a range of sellers. Sellers can & will try to benefit from this decreased price to consumers. Its basic economics, not a deceptive practice. Consumer law will not control businesses from benefiting from the windfall to buyers.

I'm all for people helping enforce consumer law, but on OzBargain there seems to be an idea the ACCC are consumer police with the funds & resources to take on any consumer issue, whether the consumer law covers the situation or not.

I've taken a business to court on a consumer matter, despite legal advice it would fail as there was no precedent. They finally settled out of court during arbitration. Part of the settlement involved a changed business policy & staff training in better consumer interactions.

Believe me, lodging a complaint is far easier than following through with a case under consumer & other laws.

People should lodge complaints, where consumer law has been shown to be breached. I just can't see where there has been a breach of existing consumer law here.

          @Infidel:
1 was successful. 3 were added to the pile for follow-up enforcement action.

You don't need to tell the ACCC which section of the act you believe had been breached, but it helps

correct, but don't say this in your earlier comment.

In lodging a complaint, people will need to show the particular rule that is claimed to be broken

Public interest can be clearly demonstrated by the number of complaints, it's one of the best ways they would have to determine public interest. that's why it's important to tell the ACCC. Not to explain away why people shouldn't.

        • +2

@Infidel: God, so many edits to your post, you finished yet??

So much misinformation. It just keeps coming. Stop it.

In filing a complaint, you usually will be asked to state the section in which you think a breach occurred - on the form from memory. If it falls outside the ACCC bounds, they can't investigate complaints.

Your memory is pretty bad, or you could have just gone here and refreshed it. https://www.accc.gov.au/contact-us/contact-the-accc/consumer…
You do not need to state any sections of consumer law that you think has been breached. Just describe the complaint and be as helpful as you can.

If it falls outside the ACCC bounds, they can't investigate complaints.

True, but why don't you let the ACCC decide? Rather than deciding for everyone else? you said: It is eBay that is offering the discount - a different business. Disappointing - yes, but not ACCC territory.

In this case, eBay is subsidising the purchase from a range of sellers. Sellers can & will try to benefit from this decreased price to consumers. Its basic economics, not a deceptive practice.

eBay has stated that there is a discount, the prices have been raised just before the sale on a number of items. Resulting in advertising statements that are likely to mislead consumers about the potential savings. Seems pretty clear to me! However, these laws are fairly new, so you might be relying on older information??? Before this would have been fine, not anymore.

It is now clearly illegal to promote an item with a discounted (either -$ or -% or "WAS") price, where that discount is not a genuine discount.

EVEN IF, as you say, eBay or the retailers have wiggled their way out of the consumer laws on a technicality, the only way the laws will be updated or expanded is if people complain! The ACCC needs to know this is in the public interest, best way for them to show that is for complaints to roll in.

          Get complaining!!

        • +1

@Infidel: I agree. I've had experience with the ACCC - gave them a beautiful clear cut case; they couldn't do anything. I believe the ACCC is just there so that people can say or believe that we have some such ummmmmm, service. Allan Fels was really successful when he was in charge; he gave big business a fright. Government soon stepped in and took away most of the ACCC's power. Now they just satisfy the criteria of making us feel better for their existence but they don't actually do anything.

Each ebay store that is part of the sale is clearly not part of the sale without their knowledge or consent, they have worked with ebay to set this sale up and thus are responsible.

  • Double storey house, 80m2 a floor. Fibre is a fairytale so ADSL2 only. Would a good router improve wireless movie streaming over what a standard ISP modem can deliver?
Seems the attached drive's speed may be the bottleneck.

    • +1

Possibly. What you want to look at is the wireless signal type (b,g,n,ac) and the strength of the signal as seen by the receiving device. Different devices are going to have slightly different range to them depending on the signal type or other factors. Some devices like the Chromecast can give you a rough idea of the signal strength they are receiving, others you need to trial and error it a bit.

The important questions to your scenario are

      1. Is the movie being streamed from the internet or locally?
      2. Is the device playing the movie up to handling the bandwidth/format served to it? (PS3 does not like 1080p over wireless or wired in certain conditions)
      • I don't have a current setup at the moment, will be something to get going again soon.

Last time I switched to Apple Time Capsule - easiest for both backups & Apple TV. Worked well, much better than ISP modem.
This time I'm hesitant to go back to the same config, may use Chromecast as it's 1/5 of the price now. I have a portable hard-drive (USB3). Local movies. Connection is ADSL2 so everything should be able to keep up with that for streaming content.
Soniq TV is a 'smart TV' (the recent JB $997 special) so there may even be something direct it has built in instead of needing Chromecast, haven't looked yet.

4k content is something I haven't dealt with before and I'm assuming will require some decent bandwidth compared with traditional content.

    • +1

get one of the ubiquiti unifi access points.

    • +1

Would a good router improve wireless movie streaming over what a standard ISP modem can deliver?

Wireless shares the connection bandwidth on that channel. So, one stream might be fine, but then somebody else connects to Youtube and bammo, your movie stutters.

Also, 5.8GHz WiFi is absolutely terrible for penetration through walls and floors. I did heaps of tests and the best between my front and rear rooms was using 2.4GHz on 20MHz Spread (not 40).

Seems the attached drive's speed may be the bottleneck.

No, it's the way that you are connecting.

You need to connect non-portable devices (PCs, TVs, etc) using Ethernet.

You need separate access points on upper and lower levels

You need to use a WiFi analyser and test what config works best.

      • Ethernet not easily possible.

It's around 8 x 8m2 over two stories with little interference - 1 modem has been ok before, just thinking towards future 4k content.

Not actually home right now for testing. Not that it'd make buying a router or not any easy given it'll be an educated guess at best.

        • +1

          Ethernet not easily possible

It's always possible to get a cable at least upstairs. Then a second access point - that will significantly ease the traffic congestion and might just solve the problem.

That's what we've done - we have the main router and two access points. And we are on one level. And everything is wired connection except for iPods, Phones and iPad.

Test your WiFi signal strength first, buy routers later.

In my opinion you are crazy even considering streaming 4K over WiFi. Transcode it down to 720p using Plex or something and it'll work, but you cannot reliably stream over WiFi and use the internet at the same time.

Actually, one way to do it is to make a Movies SSID and stream only on that, saving the other band and other routers to serve internet.

        • @llama: Power over ethernet is obviously easy. The layout is a bit tricky, was definitely built in a "works now and don't worry about later" fashion. It's got quite a number of corners to go around, I know from installing the security system it's not something anyone wants to do (I'd have put the panel in the location I'd want a secondary router). It does have two phone outlets, though don't think that can be utilised in a useful way.

What is the bandwidth rate roughly for 4k? I wouldn't have thought it'd be that much to trouble ac connections, though of course the speeds thrown around in IT generally end up not even close in reality.

No problem with 720/1080 that's what we've used before. Was thinking of a future-proofing purchase, hard to know as don't want to buy a product to find out it's not much better anyway. Time capsule with Apple TV worked fine, but that was ~4 years ago setup, didn't want to go back to that exactly as surely something better by now.

Will this be good enough for a duplex flat? Any ideas ozbargainers?

    • +1

It will more than likely be enough, especially if it's centrally located.
I've installed 4 of these for family and friends, ranging from a 2-storey 2 bedroom unit, to a 2-storey 4 bedroom house.

      • Thanks for the input. It won't be centrally located though. Ican only install in the bedroom in the lower floor. The bedroom in the upper floor is identical and right above it. The problem is the hall which is away from the room on the upper floor.

Currently without an antenna router it barely reaches midway. I'm hoping this would reach the entire hall.

    • Umm any clue why this product has: PLEASE NOTE: THIS PRODUCT IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH 'FTTN' NBN CONNECTIONS

I think my internet is something called fttb :
      https://www.wondercom.com.au/

      This shit is so confusing.

      • +1

I don't think the Archer D7 will work with FTTB (Fibre to the Basement). I think you need a VDSL modem/router (not ADSL).

You should confirm whether your current modem/router is VDSL and then look for a suitable alternative:
        https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/fttn_registered_modem_router

If you want a relatively powerful unit with external antennas, take a look at the ASUS DSL-AC68U or Netgear Nighthawk D7000.

Also, check if you need a VoIP port (phone connected to modem).

        • +1

Thanks buddy. You are right. It seems like I am in need of VDSL modem/router. I hope I find something on deals. Thanks!

        • Hey mate. Just another question. If I was just going for a router (assuming I would use my current one just for the modem) I don't need a specific one do I? Why are there some routers that specify not FTTN compatible? eg. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ASUS-RT-AC68U-Dual-Band-AC1900-Wi…

        • +1

          @vchan:
If you're going to Bridge your modem/router (to use the Modem feature only), then you can connect it to any Router.
However, some VDSL modem/routers cannot be bridged or bridged easily (refer to https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/fttn_registered_modem_router ). If you want to use this option, make sure your existing modem/router can be bridged.

Most customers prefer an all-in-one device to deliver internet access. Some devices are specified as not FTTN compatible because they will not support FTTN on their own (you need a 2nd device — a VDSL modem — to make it work). The RT-AC68U Router you linked to cannot be used to deliver FTTN/FTTB because it doesn't have a modem, but it can be used to deliver networking (WiFi, Ethernet ports, routing, etc) if connected to a VDSL modem.

        • +1

@1bug: Understood. My current router can be bridged according to the link. Thanks a lot! Super useful stuff!

  • So I'm pretty sure I did the right thing snagging a 980 Ti for 599 shipped.
I think the only way I could've done better is by holding out for one of those EVGA 1070 deals that pop up on Amazon. As EVGA offer a global warranty. They tend to sell out in what seems like minutes though.

I feel bad leaving the red team since my 9800pro 15 odd years ago, but AMD didn't have anything that could compete at this level. Especially since I have a 1440p monitor.

Looking forward to playing nothing but dota on my overkill GPU!

    • EVGA 980ti's have been as low as $538 shipped from Amazon though, but $599 for local stock is still pretty good considering that some others are still buying used ones for >$600.

        Did I misspelt the word?
        Haven't try those chips myself.
        Looks good.

  • Cant decide on the D7 or D9… Anyone got some real experience? I have read a ton of whirlpool forums. Does the wireless coverage improve that much? My 7800N is nearly dead, also about 6years old.

    • unless u have devices that can utilise the d9, the d7 should suffice

set the 7800n as modem only in bridge mode and connect it to the d7

      will be amazing

      • set the 7800n as modem only in bridge mode and connect it to the d7

No need to bridge the 7800N unless you connect it to a standalone Router. The D7 has a built-in ADSL2+ modem.

        • oops confused the D7 with the R7000

          my bad

  • SanDisk 128GB Extreme Pro CZ88 USB 3.0 BUNDLE VOLANS Portable 4-Port USB 3.0 Hub
    $79.20 after CTEC20
Faster and cheaper (per MB) than Sandisk Extreme 64GB USB3 $43.96 and has a portable hub.

It seems odd though as the stick on its own from Wireless1 is $149 (before discount code)

  • Any deals on the Logitech G930 headset?

no good prices on NUCs, you're better off buying from amazon

    • I thought the skull Canyon NUC was significantly cheaper

  • 2x Sandisk Ultra MicroSD 80Mb/s 128GB $55.11

    1x Sandisk Ultra MicroSD 90MB/s 200GB $103.96

      I'd get 2 x smaller ones.

Less $$ (and content) lost if you lose one.

And you can use one while sharing or clearing off the other one.

  • Any good Mobo/cpu deals?

    • I didn't see any good mother boards worth buying. But I did buy a I5 6600 for $299.

  • What is the fastest micro SD card available? I would like to get a 32gb one to mount as the main hdd in my phone.

    • Samsung Pro (Technically Pro+ but it's not available here), or Sandisk Extreme Pro.

You can get Samsung 128GB Pro for about $104. R/W speeds are 90/80.

Sandisk Extreme Pro is $53 and is very slightly faster but only goes up to 64GB. Price is about the same per GB.

If you're after a fast 128GB, the Samsung Pro is your best option. But you can get a Samdisk Ultra for just over half that price..

      • Great thanks for your help. Also I have researched this a fair bit last few hours.
For anyone buying an SD card for their phone… Find out how fast the microSD card controller is in your phone. Mine can support about 35mb\s. So by this logic a UHS-1 or 2 would be overkill as the phone physically couldn't utilize the microSD cards max speed. Just something to consider.
