    Manufacturer refurbished!!

  • +8

I suggest please put Refurbished in Title

  • +24

Don't make the assumption you will be receiving a new product. Read their feedback. Some items come scratched, some with missing parts, faulty and other things too.

  • -3

Added to cart, checked out, applied code TEC20 code… still $498.75

    • +1

      CTEC20 works! $399

I brought a Sony Xperia Z couple of years back, then my screen got cracked and screen became unresponsive, and was quoted $350 for repair. Never sony for me again

    • +1

same story for me, i repaired it myself for ~$150, then it happened again after a few more months.

    • Exactly. My front screen cracked on its own in my pocket, searched it up and it was a uncommon but still confirmed defect. Sony's support, phonebiz, refused to acknowledge the defect and wanted $400 to fix it (bought for $409 at MSY), or $40 to post it back to me. I chose not to pay anything, after which they recycled my phone and I never saw it again.

Lovely phones, horrid support. Sony, never again (until they drop phonebiz).

    • Same happened to me, problem also similar with LG, especially if older model. I had to go 3rd party

    • Got a loose charging port for their phablet. was quoted a huge repair bill (apparently they're supposed to return it to almost new condition). Made a huge fuss, got everything done FOC.

    • fonebiz.com.au does it for $220 total.
They are the repairer for Sony, but you can liaise direct with them.
      Even accept international models.

  • how do you know: says refurb but generally the stuff coming from Sony eBay appears new?

    • I've bought stuff from Sony store before and it was a sealed new item - it happened to be end of line. The new X performance series are out now and this may be them dumping stock.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/222021
Comment about the camera I bought which was new:
"although it does state refurb, sony tags everything as refurbed on their ebay store.

but they list brand new EOL products as well, and also tag them as refurb. And since the mk4 came out…

      risk it for the biscuit"

      • Sony can get their opened or returned products sealed again and put it back to the market. They are then called refurbished regardless of sealed or not.

      • The X series & C series are two different models aimed at different markets. I doubt they would be phasing them out given their success with the model.

  • +4

    a lil hot potato

    • +1

I hear that was fixed in a recent update? Good for winter though.

      • +5

I bought a Z5C not long ago, hit 65 degrees c while using chrome for about 10 minutes, battery would die in about 2 hours of use. Took it back to the store, got a replacement, this one works great and barely heats up at all and gets about 6 hours screen-on time. It seems there is no fix for it, just a very large number of faulty units.

        • +2

the reason there is a lot of "faulty units" is because of Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 cpu .. i have it in my M9 .. it heats nice and toasty … LG, HTC and Sony got "burnt" (pun intended) by qualcomm quite badly because they were in the new phone cycle when that chipset was released…. LG got lucky and it was only in the flex (which my wife has and it doesnt heat up as the cpu is throttled) so for the G4 they went to the 808 as did a lot of other manufacturers …

simply if you see a 810 powered phone its pot luck how good/bad it will turn out… id just stay away to be honest

        • @scud70:

i use a SD810 for pokego and it only heats up when i evolve like 10 pokes at once, and gets very bad, needs resetting, other times its warm.

        • @scud70: yeh the problem is definitely CPU related, and the 810 is notorious for the overheating, but it's not a problem with all Z5Cs. Like I said, my first one overheated literally from the first time I used it after taking it out of the box, and would heat up to ridiculous temperatures within minutes of using it every single time. The replacement? Absolutely fine. Fantastic battery life, great performance, only ever gets slightly warm.

The manufacturing yields just must be terrible for the 810, and QA is seemingly non existent.

        • @MrFunSocks: it may be and it's just speculation on my part that newer batches have some sort of throttling, kind of like the flex2.. My m9 was ridiculously bad before a crap load of updates and now it heats up if I'm charging and playing a game at the same time… Otherwise rubbish camera aside it's a good phone… Still if someone asked me if they should spend money on a 810 phone id say no… Lots of nice mid range phones coming out and the 617 and 820 are good cpu/chipsets… :)

        • @scud70: I would probably agree with you. I wouldn't recommend this phone unless you can pick it up in store and get it replaced on the spot. The problem is that it's almost alone in its category when it does work - small and high spec'd with great battery life. That's pretty much why I bought it, size and battery life. Nothing else comes close, but nothing else also comes close to the horror stories of this phone lol.

        • @MrFunSocks: hahahaha i know what you mean i dont blame htc, sony, lg and the like as much as Qualcomm … they must have very lax QA to let the 810 through with all the issue's that ensued … i def agree with the category Sony do a good job with the compact range

  • +1

Did anyone receive a tax invoice showing the GST from Sony?

  • good price.

  • +8

Z5 compact has design flaws. If you get this one you could end up repairing it under warranty but not able to use your phone for more than 1 month, or it could just break after your warranty expires. I won't risk it. Don't expect too much from a Sony Mobile.

    • +1

Z3C wasn't exactly immune either. My Z3C has had the following warranty issues so far:

      • Volume down not working.
      • Top touch screen area stopped working (not an uncommon issue with this model).

Upside is my Z3C looks brand new. Was running a really crappy old lag phone for a few weeks while I waited though, was at my wits end at that time! If I wasn't doing Android dev by profession, I'd probably just buy an iPhone for a "walk into store and be looked after" experience.

      • +1

Sony is pretty bad when it comes to mobile phone's quality. In fact, including mine, Anyone I know with a Sony phone (Z1, Z2, Z3 you name it), has stopped working. That's significant. My Sony Z Ultra got a blurry screen when temperature is under 20 degree…… And it's not an uncommon issue also.

Anyway I'm done with them. They didn't offer me anything I hope from a "SONY", crappy camera, terrible sound quality, sub-par screen.

        • +1

Yeah, as amazing that the z3c has been while it's working, I may have to skip on the Sony brand now as well. It's no surprise they are supposed tobbe diverting resources away from their mobile division.

      • I can definitely say the only major Android manufacturer to take care of customers is HTC but that could be pot luck. Samsung is probably the worst but they supply us with plenty of stuff for work and they assure us they are learning lessons from the mobile Market(apparently customer service is a foreign concept)

  • +2

I bought a refurbished camera from them. The box was opened and the camera was used before but it was not damaged or anything.

  • +2

I'd consider checking out the large amount of negative feedback before buying from them. Particularly concerning refurbished products sold by them. Lots of unhappy buyers.

    • Most of the negatives I can see is non-delivery of an item which was then listed as out of stock.

  • +4

Worst phone I've ever owned. I've been a Sony fan boy since Xperia Z3 (Z3 - Z3 Compact - Z5 Compact). Never buying a Sony phone again.

    • Anything in particular? I bought this for my wife as she loves her z3c but it is starting to look a bit beaten up with use over the past few years

      • +5

        I'd pick Z3C over Z5C any day. I sold my Z3C to buy a Z5C. Big mistake :(

The issues I've had with my Z5C were:
        - Insane lag. Using both music app and chrome was difficult as chrome would lag so much. Even just using the chrome app on its own would lag. Sometimes the phone would freeze and I'd have to do a force restart

        • Camera is mediocre

        • The phone gets heated up easily. It was hard using the phone during my trip to Thailand.

        • WiFi issue. The WiFi would disconnect itself when it's in sleep mode and it'll not reconnect until you turn the screen back on. Sony claims that they've fixed this issue but it's bs. There's a huge post on it on the official xperia forum and Sony hasn't responded to it for months. The other issue I had was that my WiFi would stop working while using the phone, the only way to fix this was by disconnecting WiFi from the phone, then reconnect it. This will happen every 5-10 minutes. I thought it was my router's fault but I'm having no issues with it on my galaxy s7.

The list goes on and on. Maybe I had a faulty phone who knows, but I'm very with my galaxy s7 and I don't think I'll ever buy a Sony phone.

        • Sounds like a faulty phone as the same happened with mine before I took it back and got a replacement. Heated up like crazy, UI would lag and take seconds to respond, often wouldn't respond to touch input when hot, bluetooth would constantly drop and reconnect, battery life was abysmal (2 hours use would kill the entire battery).

Replacement is going great. I get 2 days of battery life with 5-6 hours screen-on time, bluetooth is perfect, doesn't get more than slightly warm, UI is fast at all times. Seems to be a very large percentage of Z5Cs are faulty, so I would be wary of buying one from the internet as at least buying from a shop you can walk in and get a replacement on the spot. I dare say a lot of these refurbished units are ones that have been sent back because of these problems in the first place.

        • +1

Saw your comments after I just said same thing….but reading other forums also there seems to be a very high number of users with these problems, including myself.

        • I have the same wifi issue as you on my z5 dual sim, it's a pain because usually I never go over my limit, but because the phone is constantly choosing GSM over Wifi my 2Gb doesn't last me to month any more. I also thought it was my router until I realised it happens everywhere, even while I'm actively using the phone, I could be surfing this site and hit a link and the wifi is off. I've had to resort to leaving Mobile Data off so that when it turns off it doesn't affect my limit.

I'm hoping it's a software issue because it was happening heaps when I bought the phone, but after an update the problem almost disapperaed, however a couple more updates and it's worse again (although not as bad as when I first bought it but at this rate it's getting there). Either way have you found any way around it or is there any information about how to minimise it or what is causing the problem? (If you can provide a link to the forum that would be great). Fortunately it's the only issue I've had.

      • This was also the worst phone I've ever owned, no exaggeration.

        • Main reason: Slowness. It's just a dreadfully laggy phone. 10 seconds to open the camera, 5+ seconds to switch between apps. The second you try to use it in weather above 12 degrees it overheats and gets even slower.

        • Ridiculous button placement. The buttons are on the BOTTOM of the SIDE of the phone. Who or what ever designed this phone has not ever seen a human hand. It just makes no sense. And the navigation buttons are on the screen despite there being plenty of bezel they could be on.

        • Ridiculous oversizing of everything in the UI. Everything on Android is so spaced out and oversized it just wastes the screen space as it is, and Sony's DPI setting makes it even worse. 4.6 inches is fine, as long as your software uses it in a way that makes sense (see: iPhone).

        • Not that great a camera. Sure, the megapixel count is high, but the pictures are noisy and muddy and dull, and there's no HDR.

        • Awful screen. The pixel density is nearly as high as an iPhone, but it's a terrible screen that lacks sharpness due to, I don't know, the sub pixel layout or something. And the contrast is bad, with light bleed at the bottom. It's just obviously worse than even an iPhone screen (which is itself behind some Androids).

        • The UI problems can be fixed with a different launcher. Nova launcher is great and highly customizable, can make everything smaller if you want.

There is HDR in the camera, you just have to switch to the manual mode, not automatic.

Agree on button placement and camera app opening speed.

        • @MrFunSocks: Switching launchers only fixes the launchers. It doesn't fix the actual apps once you open them.

Having to use manual to do HDR is still not the same as having auto HDR.

        • @MrMcHairyHead: Not sure what you're talking about then in regards to UI in apps. I haven't had any problems with stuff being oversized. What apps specifically are you talking about?

Not really sure what the difference is between HDR and "auto HDR" if there is even a thing? It just means that the automatic shot setting in the camera app doesn't have HDR, but if you go to the manually configurable shooting mode it does.

        • If the phone is slow, you should always perform a factory reset and don't install anything first. This will give you the true expected performance of the phone.

I'd imagine you had a fair bit of apps installed as my Z5C takes 3 seconds to open camera and is almost instant when switching between apps.

10 seconds is awfully slow I'd admit so I believe you either have way too much apps installed(when I say apps - different memory boosters, disk cleanup, antivirus, etc.) or the phone is faulty in the first place.

Other points I have to agree, volume rocker is kinda awkward and camera is great but not THAT great.

        • @wombok2: There was nothing wrong with it. I did a factory reset. It's widely known to be a slow phone.

        • @MrFunSocks:

Not sure what you're talking about then in regards to UI in apps. I haven't had any problems with stuff being oversized.

Try opening literally any app at all. Everything is oversized and spaced out. Look how few items you can see in the Settings app. Look how much screen space a notification takes up. It's like it was designed for the vision impaired. It's a problem with Android in general, but even worse on Sony phone.

It just means that the automatic shot setting in the camera app doesn't have HDR, but if you go to the manually configurable shooting mode it does.

Right, which means you can't shoot in auto mode and have HDR. Which is a problem if you want to shoot in auto mode and have HDR. You don't necessarily want to bother switching to manual mode every time, or having to set each setting each time. Every other phone on the market manages HDR in auto mode just fine.

        • +1

          @MrMcHairyHead:

If your phone is still slow after a reset, I'm positive you have a faulty handset. It might be slow after installing lots of apps, but it cant be that slow from a clean install.

If you experience phone being slow after installing all your apps, then one of them is the culprit.

    • -1

      Why worst phone? Please explain!

  • +5

Which reminded me the wife is wanting an Iphone SE. Only Futu Online is selling a 16GB model for $795, even though the RRP is $679. Seems like convenient pricing during the sale.

  • +1

Tempting, if only they had one in black!

  • The specs show this phone has having 1920 x 1080 pixels when in fact it is only 1280 x 720.

    • Yeah I noticed that to, how hard is it for major companies to list the correct specifications??

      • Looks like they just copy/pasted the specs from the regular Z5 - the Z5C is much smaller than the listed size as well.

        Actual Z5C size: 127 x 65 x 8.9 mm
        Size listed on this deal: 145 x 72 x 7.6mm

  • +1

I wouldn't recommend this phone. Had mine for 6 months, and for something that was meant to be pretty high-spec, ran slow as soon as I had a couple of apps installed, have needed to clean install multiple times, very buggy/crashing, and had problems with SD card.

    • I can corroborate this. It's an incredibly slow phone. I switched back to the 2013 HTC One and it was somehow faster.

  • +4

now the title in ebay has been changed to (NEW), and condition has been changed to:

Brand New: A brand-new, unused, unopened, undamaged item in its original packaging (where packaging is applicable). Packaging should be the same as what is available in a retail store, unless the item was packaged by the manufacturer in non-retail packaging, such as an unprinted box or plastic bag. See the seller's listing for full details

    really tempting at this price

    • If you get a good unit that isn't faulty that's an incredible price. It's got flagship specs and performance.

      • yeah it is starting to sound like a lucky draw……. a $400 raffle ticket :)

      • +1

        flagship specs, yes
        flagship performance, no

        • I am still sitting on the fence with all the bad exp shared by others, but with ebay's buyer protection, I should be able to get a refund pretty easily if things goes south? hopefully 6 months should be more then enough for any potential issues to rear their heads…..

        • @FW190:My Sony stopped working at 13 month…

        • +1

          @coolbbb888:
You should be able get it fixed under warranty as phones generally have a 24 month statuatory warranty as they are sold with a 24 month plan at most places or yu expect them to last at least 24 months.

Apple tried it before getting busted by the ACCC

          http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/digital-life-news/apple-k…

"Until now, many Apple consumers have reported on forums that store staff have only ever discussed with them a standard 12-month manufacturer warranty when selling, fixing or replacing Apple goods.

Apple has now changed this from 12 months to 24, which appears to bring it in line with Australian Consumer Law."

        • @leyton01: It is under 24 months warranty, however it took 5 weeks before I got it back, which was too long so I bought another phone. Then this Sony becomes obsolete. That is not an ideal situation. And 5 weeks isn't the longest wait I've heard.

        • @leyton01: the worst part isn't sending them back for fixing. It was the first time I sent it back, after 4 weeks, they sent it back with a letter says they could not duplicate the fault… If I re-send again and they still not able to duplicate, they will charge $65 handling fee… It means whatever I told them on the phone means nothing to them when I claim the fault.

So I had to send it back again with 2 piece of paper sticking on the front and back of the phone, emphasis the problem and how you duplicate it. Then I got it back fixed after 5 weeks.

Overall the experience was horrible and I just don't want go through it again, especially after learning so many people's Sony gone busted. Not a single one last 24 months without issue.

        • @coolbbb888:

I've got a Samsung and they are no better - no service centre in Brisbane, 4 week turn around via courier and this was for a phone within 30 days (DOA time frame).

Big companies just forget about customer service.

        • @coolbbb888:

Oh and there was 2 things wrong with my old Samsung and they only fixed one and wanted me to send it back again a second time for another month to fix the second thing (which was a faulty removable back cover and the refused to just send me a replacement cover)

        • @leyton01: My goodness… That's terrible… They're the same people right? Fonebiz?

The good thing about Samsung is that I don't see every Samsung phone got sent back for repairing like Sony did.

  • Yellow link broke

    • +2

      It's under warranty at Fonebiz

  • Damn it so tempting since I was waiting for this one to go on sale. But after reading all the comments about all the potential issues I'm not so sure anymore.

  • I have the Z1C version and its seems to be ok.

Biggest issue i had was that critical things (ringer, dialer, sms) stoped working after software update from Sony.

Had to back it up using the Sony software and then restore it. After that everthing went back to normal.

The problem is trying to find another phone which is well spec'd but in small factor (apart from Apple).

  • +2

A lot of -ve feedback on the Z5C. I'll chime in with mine. Got mine outright from JB earlier this year and couldnt be happier with it. Before update to marshmellow there were a few glitches where the battery would die in a few hours, it would get really hot and some apps would start slow. All of that has been resolved with the updates in my experience. Its reasonably quick. You just have to keep it clean, dont let bloatware build up, take care of it and it does great. Has an amazing camera, the videos and the lens on it are especially wow. Personally I think its the best mid-sized phone you can get right now. Waterproof, quick, great camera, fingerprint scanner that works decent, and regular updates. Just gotta take care of it. For those looking for a good specced, solid, mid sized phone, I would highly recommend this.

    • Thanks for the feedback. Have you experienced any heat issues like everyone?

      • Like I said in my comment, once or twice, and that was early before the updates, and happened when an app crashed or went into a loop aka some malfunction, not regularly, not since the updates. It does however get hot if you shoot in 4K or 60fps for over 5 or so minutes. Otherwise, nope, for me anyway

    • I had one. The camera certainly has a high megapixel count (23), but I didn't think the photos looked all that great.

      • In my experience - if you use the camera as intended aka in the 8MP mode where it oversamples, and using the intelligent auto mode, not manual, it gives some amazing photos, certainly on par with if not better than other industry leaders right now. If you use the manual mode you have to tinker to get good results, leave it in the default mode and its stunning.

  • nice…. I caved and bought. Nexus 5X purchased recently really is too big for my liking. (anyone want to buy one >_>)

    • Pm please

Good luck using this phone in summer. It's a furnace. It's like holding a small brick of lava. And it slows to a crawl to try to compensate for that. Had to get rid of mine.

This was the worst phone I've ever owned, hands down. Gonna reiterate what I said above about why:

    • +1

I think you'll fine there is HDR. In fact its quite good. Especially HDR Video
Also see above comments re the speed and overheating. You either need to update to latest software and do a clean reinstall, or you have a dud. A normal functioning Z5C doesnt do that

      • I did a clean reinstall when I had it. It fixed the battery drain but didn't fix the slowness or overheating. I'm not gonna sit around for eight months for software to maybe make my phone usable.

Besides, the slowness and overheating problems are well known. It's a hardware problem with the Snapdragon 810. Software might be able to mitigate it a bit with throttling, making the phone slower again in the process, but there's only so much you can do when it's a physical issue. There's no way these phones are magically running fast and cool now.

        • From memory, the consensus was that some 810's are showing that behaviour, not all, and unfortunately it becomes a bit of a probability. If you are still having the issues, I think it would be worth requesting an exchange based on that, as it is a well documented issue, but it is also well documented that a normally functioning z5c does not do those. Good luck

        • @thereisriceandcurry: I find it hard to believe that some would have that problem but still work. I could understand it if the CPU didn't work at all, but CPUs are incredibly sensitive - if it was faulty I think it'd just straight up not work, rather than work slowly. You can check the temps and clock speeds pretty easily, and if they're the same as a working unit, what could it possibly be?

I'm not saying it's impossible, but I think it's more likely rose coloured glasses by Android fans that don't want to admit their device isn't perfect

        • @MrMcHairyHead:

It's a faulty CPU that causes the problem, and as such it does not affect all phones with it. Like I said above, I bought a Z5C, had massive overheating and battery life problems from the first time I used it, even after factory resets, took it back and got a replacement, and the replacement unit has none of the problems. It gets mildly hot at worst, and gets 6 hours of SOT battery life (compared to 2 on the original unit).

Just because some units have a problem doesn't mean that all units do, and just because the phone turns on doesn't mean the CPU isn't faulty. Quality Assurance is obviously terrible with these CPUs.

    • After a factory reset and you're still having these issues it's most likely a faulty phone.

If it shows no signs of lag, then it's definitely the apps you have are causing it.

  • After reading all the -ve feedbacks for Sony Australia for just the last month. It just not worth buying from them.

  • +1

the SD810 beast was never meant to be contained in a compact form.

  • Bought. Thanks OP.

  • I decided to skip the X Performance as it only came out officially in Australia last week on Tuesday, then this happens.

    EDIT: Spelling

  • What I want from Sony is a proper PlayStation phone. Just put 4G in a miniature Vita. Done.

  • +1

Purchased a white one to replace my z1 compact.

The Z1 compact still goes like a champ, its had the battery replaced and is therefore no longer waterproof, or dust proof, and dust has got into the camera sensor.

I recently had it start to fail in a blizzard in Germany on a mountain due to no longer being water proof, so time for an upgrade.

There is nothing else on the market that is the right size, with good battery life that is advertised as weather proof.

Nevertheless, I am prepared for disappointment!

  • White sold out?

    • maybe I got the last one? bought 40 minutes ago
probably puts me at high risk of having my order cancelled because they kept selling without realising they were out of stock…

      • Maybe, but 120 seems too even to be all of their stock available. Possibly they had a set number for this sale..

  • Has anyone had shipping notification as yet? Thanks.
