To be fair, when the 500gb Xbox One S comes out the price for the original 500GB XB1 is going to fall through the floor, so it looks worse than it actually is at the moment.
I still wouldn't recommend anyone do it though - sell it privately for more than $170.

The fact that people buy games from and trade games in to EB shows that they are able to pull a fast one over lots of people. People will go in and buy second hand things from them for $3 less than a brand new one, so they will be able to resell these consoles easily for more than $170.
It doesn't change the fact that when the new model comes out the price of the one they are offering this trade in on will fall through the floor. Not to $170, which is why they are giving $170, but not much more.
I was told last night that you can also score your EB Level bonus AND the 30% pre-order bonus (if you trade in your XBOX one towards this pre-order). If you're level 4, you're getting $255 credit ($170 + 50% ($85)) towards the ONE S. I'm seeing second-hand consoles for about $250-300 on Gumtree on the moment so it's not that bad.
This way you don't have to meet up with strangers and time-wasters on the local classifieds to squeeze those extra few bucks :P

You take the extra amount off the final price. So it should be $549 (normal price) - $170 (plus extra trade in credit). I'm level 3 so it should cost me around $300.
Combined with a 50% bonus voucher, it totals $340 credit, making it quite a decent trade value.
Usually those bonuses say they can't be used with any other offer (say the 30% extra). Could be worth a shot trying!

I doubt they will allow it, and current gen trade values on XB1 and PS4 games are almost worthless. 3DS and Wii U fair a little better due to Nintendo titles holding value like they do.

You are not recieving the value in dollars, you are receiving it as an option to trade items with one party that chooses the terms of the trade.
Not disputing what you're saying, but as an avid gumtree seller and buyer, I have yet to encounter a single time-waster.
Stranger? Most certainly yes. But I don't really see how meeting strangers could be an issue. At least not for me. The effort spent on local classifieds is exaggerated in most cases. As long as you are offering reasonable quotes and using common sense to filter out spammers you'll be fine.
Not even considering the pretense in your argument that one has to be in level 4 until the credit received is close to the market price of a 2ndhand XBox. You'll have to have dumped a trashton of money into EB already. If one is already lvl 4 then go ahead but I doubt it will be worthwhile for a new lvl 1 to boost to 4 to share this benefit.

I'm yet to encounter a single buyer who pulls through. I'm exaggerating, it's literally 10% or less. People on there are a freaking nightmare to deal with.

I dunno, I've sold my PS4, PSV, 2 phones, an iPad, a kindle, and bought a phone, a watch, a WiiU, through Gumtree. And they are just the stuff that I can think of to begin with. All of them were pretty satisfiable experiences.
Maybe I'm just not using it enough or I'm being very lucky, but Gumtreeing has already become my first preference when the necessity of a stuff arises. It feels just natural to check if it is being discounted on ozbargain, and if not, if somebody sells it on gumtree.
Whats the trade in price for trading in a xbox one alone? How much extra do we get for putting it towards the one S?

Xbox consoles don't really have good resell values, you might find a collector willing to pay over the odds, but is it worth it in the long run? Probably not

From my personal experience when I traded in my xbox one 500gb for an Xbox one Elite, I would keep the controller, they only value the controller value at $10!!

Being an early adopter isn't always a good thing. We do not yet know what issues would be present or what kinks would need to be ironed out before the experience is hitch-free. I wouldn't spend my money on a product that would require several patches before I can enjoy it. I'm not trying to be the first person on my street to get a Xbox One S.
Then again, this is just my opinion.
There is a special place in hell for whoever birthed the idea of preordering stuff.
EB don't pull anything like you hear about Gamestop do in the US, so there is nothing wrong with pre ordering especially hardware or limited editions if that is your thing. People just like to get on bandwagon movements like bashing COD, annual releases, getting on hype trains for Falliut 4, Doom etc. if a console is going to be faulty it's likely to happen straight out of the box and if not you've got your consumer guarantee 👍

Just flog it on gumtree or eBay and get twice as much for it - then you can upgrade to the 2TB model for half the out of pocket cost.
Not arguing with your opinion but how much u can sell 50" gb one on gumtree? New bundle for 500 gb are on sale for $199 so if u have old one I don't think u can get more then $100 and if u do mange to sell for more then that then do refer that bloke to ozbargain.

I went to the store today and the rep showed me a picture of the Xbox one s costing $579 instead of $549 in the description. Does anyone have any more information about the trade in bonus?
I put in a preorder anyway, just in case I wanted it. Seems like a good deal. Not really thinking about project Scorpio at this stage, because it looks like all the equipment involved will easily cost over $1000, so it's not exactly the same class of machine as the regular Xbox.
