Wii Console (Refurbished) + Wii Sports (Preowned) - $28 @ EB Games

3530

OK, this is one for those families who may have missed out on the Wii phase, may have not bothered, may now have kids old enough to play that weren't able to before. Whatever the reason, this is basically chump change for a fun console that can be easily soft-modded to play from USB to get more life out of it! Buy a 2nd remote and have fun :)

What's included?

Nintendo Wii Console (Refurbished, colour of console may vary)
Nintendo Wii Remote
Nintendo Wii Nunchuck
AV Cable
Sensor Bar

        • @MxBlue: Thanks! That's awesome. My gf is going to love this! :D

  • +4

Is this the older version that also played GC games? If so then it is a real bargain.

    • +4

EB website says some are and some aren't (family edition).

    • *The console could vary between an original Nintendo Wii or a Family Edition Nintendo Wii. Due to this, we cannot guarantee that the console will support Game Cube Controllers or Games"

    • It depends on what each store will stock, so best to head in or call to make sure.

    • +1

I would still soft mod and use 'nintendont' with a classic controller. Not sure if you can do that with a console lacking the GC bits but I'm guessing you could as it uses the Wii software layer.

  • I just ordered one for pick up

  • Thanks, picked up the only one at Albert Street in Brisbane. I think there's another one at Myer Centre in case someone wants to get one from Brisbane CBD

  • +1

The run Netflix from memory, sounds like a brilliant way to get a cheap Netflix ready TV.

    • +4

      Not here they don't

Netflix supports streaming on the Nintendo Wii in the following regions: Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Latin America, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

And besides, it's only 480p streaming!

    • +7

I've got mine running netflix (in Aus). I think I had to log into the UK store, download the app, then log out and go back into the Aus store. It's doable, and looks fine (for me) with 480p. The interface is a bit slow though and quite basic.

      • I use the same thing for my folks, didn't know if they would like Netflix but my dad absolutely loves the documentaries on there.

Pity the Wii's wifi seems to be a bit dodgy, but it does work pretty well just as a Netflix machine if you're not worried about HD.

I would be tempted to buy this, but not sure after using the Dolphin emulator and all the goodness that comes with that if I could go back to 480P :-P

    • +1

I'd strongly advise copping the extra 20$ and getting a chromecast for HD and to avoid the sluggishness of the wii if netflix was a primary reason for you.

    • +2

Lol, you know what a Chromecast is, right?

    • +1

      In 480p…

      • +4

        Too Hi-Res for my B&W TV unfortunately… :(

        • +1

How is that wii-u going? ;)

        • +1

          @Spackbace:

I don't get to play on it since the Kids got Minecraft… :(

  • +3

Still have mine next to my PS2 and Xbox ^_^

    • +1

yeah same lol. only bought the PS2 for singstar and the xbox was only used for XBMC -_-

    • Yep, though PS1 here. Have an original Xbox, still sealed in the box. Was going to be an xbmc but ended up using a PC instead.
Sitting alongside the Sega Megadrive and Amiga 500.

      • +1

Amiga 500 + Supercars II ftw!

  • +9

don't know why i bought this

    • +2

      Because it was on Ozbargain.

    • +4

when a deal gets voted up heavily like this i feel obliged to buy it regardless of what it is or whether or not i'll ever use it, lol. My mind is like: sheez, OzB says its a good deal i better quickly get one.. dunno what im going to use jousting sticks for but who cares ;)

  • Thanks, bought one for pick up

  • Bought one with pick up. Thanks op.
Now any deal in some good games?

Can install wii homebrew on this?

    • Local cash converters $3 a game. You can pick up 20 copies of Wii Fit there too.

      • Though you need the Balance Board for that game.

The best games for this console still aren't cheap. Try to find a copy of Mario Kart for $3 - good luck.

        • +1

… which is why there are 20 copies of Wii fit

  • +2

Note there is no online multiplayer since Nintendo shut down servers in 2014

    • are there other online services like virtual console ?

      • The nintendo eShop (or whatever it is called) for purchasing Virtual Console games is still available.

  • +4

you'll get $28 of fun out of it easy.

    • +3

Yeah im thinking not a bad way to get the gf into gaming possibly :D

      • The sports game is lots of fun especially with another player.

  • +1

It's about time the Wii made a comeback

  • +3

If I bought it I'd never use it.

Not a bad place to get ideas for games to try.

Mario Kart Wii for the win.
Get a Wii component cable, I would.

If trying Gamecube games (on Wii units with Gamecube ports), "Mario Kart Double Dash!!" is a unique Mario Kart experience: 2 players in the same Kart. One throwing weapons and one driving.

To play Gamecube games you'll need a controller or two or three or four:
    https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Super-Smash-Classic-Gamecube…
Sadly (in my opinion) the controller is branded "super smash bros" but is actually made by Nintendo themselves. I prefer the original Gamecube controllers since I dislike Game-branded releases of anything. Also available in black.

If wanting to hook up the thing to a VGA monitor without component or composite ports, you could do worse than:
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MayFlash-Component-YPbPr-to-VGA-A…
    (around 20 bucks)
Sound must go to separate speakers if your monitor has no audio (and you still need that Wii component cable, so it's a good idea to get one).

any old PC can emulate Wii games even without a dedicated graphics card, but this is a good price.

    • -1

      But not the motion controls

      • And not every game emulates well. Some don't work whatsoever - this was my experience with Dolphin emulator about 18 months ago… not sure if things are better now.

        • +1

You should try it again. The newest release Dolphin 5.0 has been a massive improvement with compatibility with games.

      • +2

I'm pretty sure they work fine…

    • No. For most wii and even gamecube games, even with the latest Dolphin 5.0, you'll still want a dedicated GPU.

  • Can someone tell me what the difference is between the Remote and the Nunchuck?

If I want to play split-screen two player, do I need to buy buy another controller?

    • really depends on the game mate. A lot of games don't require the nunchuck.

    • Nunchuck is just an add-on accessory, used in only a handful of games
If you want 2-player, yes a second remote is needed. But a lot of the games just work on a 'party mode' system, in that you just pass the remote to the next player as you go along

      • I'm interested in playing Mario Kart and Mario Party.

Which would I need to buy to play 2 player split-screen, the remote or the nunchuck?

        • Remote

        • @Spackbace:

Cheers, just need to hunt down a cheap remote now.

        • @as01: remotes the minimum for Mario Kart, but I prefer using the remote and nunchuck. It depends whether you want to control the game with the motion controls or whether you'd like to use a joystick. I find the joystick offers better control, so would also use the nunchuck.

        • @Smigit: There is also a Racing Wheel attachment for the remote for Mario Kart, it came packaged with it in most cases.

        • @sparkles: yeah thats what I meant by motion controls. Wasn't overly nuts on the wheel…but our kid liked it.

      • Handful? It's required for a lot of games!

    • +1

There are enough games out there that need a nunchuck, so I think it is basically required to have at least 2 controllers and 2 nunbhucks when playing 2 player games. Not all of them will need the nunchuck though (thankfully).

    • Thanks

    • +2

Nunchuck is mainly used where you want to use a joystick in your game rather than the D-pad on the remote. It comes in handy when you're playing platformers like Super Mario Galaxy. It's also used for things like boxing in Wii Sports.

Just be sure to check the back of any games you buy - up in the top left or right there's a little pictogram that shows which controllers are required or optional for that game.

There's also the classic controller, which is essentially a gamepad like you'd get on the SNES. Like the nunchuck, it's plugged into the remote.

  • The old wii is up to another young one so to lose it now would be sad. Good to have a spare if the unit ever died.

  • +6

Our wii died and we have heaps of games, kids are going to be happy tomorrow when they find out dad splurged overnight (cool points for a bargain price).

  • +6

My life long dream of flogging my Wii on feeBay for $50 has been shattered.

    • +1

Was going to flog mine to contribute to my Classic Mini pre-order :o

    • +1

I am on the same boat but I haven't lost hope. There are people dumb enough to buy a WII with couple of games at $70 on eBay.

      • Depends on if the games are actually physical copies. Collectors would definitely pay if you had games like:

        • Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
        • any of the Operation Rainfall games (Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, Pandora's Tower).
        • Have all of the OpRa games :D
Also have the artbook for Pandora's Tower

      • This is $28 with a single, non-motion controller and nun-chuck. With two motion controllers, two nun-chucks, and a few games it will be worth $50 easily.

    • easy…
      1. buy 3 from this deal
      2. sell 3 at $50+ each
      3. netting you over $50
      4. and you get to keep your wii…

      :P

    • Im sure in 5 to 10 years its value will be back up there. They haven't been worth anything second hand for years but.

  • So does anyone know what the cheapest option is for extra controllers?

    • definitely buying a Wii second-hand (gumtree or ebay…or here)

    • EB are selling refurbished ones for $15. You can get brand new after market ones on ebay and at some retail stores but my advice would be go genuine if you can.

      • Genuine works better with Dolphin, the ebay fakes don't work at all with my bluetooth and only sort of pretended to work with my DolphinBar.

    • +2

by 2 of these and flog the extra console on ebay for $20?

  • +2

Dont forget to do homebrew, otherwise no point of buying this antique.

    • what's homebrew?

      • +1

Homebrew apps are unofficial applications, not authorised by nintendo.

The most popular would likely be emulators, so that you dont have to mess around with installing official 'eshop' releases of each nes/snes/megadrive etc game to the limited internal Wii storage.

You can copy the emulator and a few 100 roms over to the SD card in the wii and play almost any old 8/16 bit era game you like, with superior emulation to the nintendo releases (more features in the emulator).

There are also ports of doom, quake and some other old PC games, and of course ISO loaders to let you run wii/gc games from a USB drive.

  • So the store pickup is only available in Sydney, is it? The price should include + $8.60 delivery cost then, since everyone doesn't live in Sydney. Still cheap as chips though.

    • +1

You can pick up from anywhere, have to change your location from sydney to where you are. I posted above i ordered pickup from brisbane CBD

      • Can you? I don't know, when I add it to the cart the only location I have is Sydney. Tried to change it to Adelaide and it doesn't show anything. Will try again. Ta

        • +1

in "your cart" simply click the pencil icon next to "pickup @ store" and select where you are

        • That being said, it's possible stores in adelaide dont have them in stock, i dont know.. but you can definitely change the pick up store

        • +1

@Iggemo: Got it. I had to delete all the info in the box and search my location with a postcode. I was initially trying to swap the state initials and city name one by one (just lazy lol) and it didn't do anything.

And thanks, I got the only one left in an EB store from a shopping center near where I live. :)

  • is this controllers good? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Built-in-Motion-Plus-Remote-Nunch…

    hong kong ones.

    • i saw that listing before but it's dodge. The "Remote" only shows a nunchuck and is $4. It's incorrectly labelled which is not a good sign. And then the "nunchuck controller + skin" actually shows a remote so they have them the wrong way round.

  • +1

Don't forget the OLD models are easy as hell to mod, and can even play Gamecube games! I'm gonna chase on tomorry just for this purpose.

    • +1

All models can be easily softmodded, even the 'family edition' or the later 'wii mini'.
You just loose direct gamecube controller support on those models, you can even play GC games via nintendont (which also works on modded wiiu).

  • Good price but how good are refurb wii units from EB?

    • +1

bought one 2 days ago for $38 (yep ripped off! :) works fine for the young kids to get some hand eye coordination fun, unpack, <hour to homebrew it, console isn't brand spanking new white but it does all it needs to do.. cheap entertainment for the holidays.

  • +2

    Pretty good for $28.
Don't mind the graphics, besides, everyone's going back to 8 bit gaming anyway.
    Must haves:
    Super Mario Galaxy and SMG2.

  • +2

Not sure why I bought another one, I barely use mine.

    • Well that's 28 bucks well spent.

  • will these gamepads work with this? have a wii already but don't like the motion remotes for my young kids ( 3 under 7 )
mainly just to play mariokart etc.

    • those need to be plugged into the Wii remote controller which then communicates wirelessly to the console. And they are cheap rubbish that will disappoint you with stuck or non-working controls (don't ask how I know…)

      • thanks for the heads up ..

these ones seems to plug directly into the console - would they be better?

        • Those can be used on those (older) Wii consoles with Gamecube ports, mostly for playing Gamecube games, but also some Wii games are compatible too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wii_games_that_use_the…

Wii games were basically designed with wireless in mind, so it's hard to avoid brain-fry waves with this console. Personally, I'd get the Nintendo originals and wouldn't bother with a third-party Gamecube controller (I have tried one and again it was rubbish).

  • Does this have any warranty?

    • On EB site it says up to 3 months.
