Wii Console (Refurbished) + Wii Sports (Preowned) - $28 @ EB Games

3530

OK, this is one for those families who may have missed out on the Wii phase, may have not bothered, may now have kids old enough to play that weren't able to before. Whatever the reason, this is basically chump change for a fun console that can be easily soft-modded to play from USB to get more life out of it! Buy a 2nd remote and have fun :)

What's included?

Nintendo Wii Console (Refurbished, colour of console may vary)
Nintendo Wii Remote
Nintendo Wii Nunchuck
AV Cable
Sensor Bar

  • Cheers! Thanks for the post!

  • +2

How is this not sold out already? I reckon the stock levels on the EB games website are off.
Good chance that some people will be disappointed tomorrow

  • I knew i should have went to sleep. Bought one. Thanks op.. i guess

  • +1

may have just bought two lol

  • +1

Well that's 28 bucks to tide me over until I get a GTX 1070 I guess.

  • +4

Haha poor EB staff members when they start their shifts tomorrow!

  • I've actually successfully resisted the urge to buy this unnecessary item… i'll just log my self out now

    • i've got a wii u that i've played once or twice from a OzB deal last year, duno what i'd do with this lol

      • Softmod it and play any wii/gamecube game you want, or copy some emulators over and use it as an 8/16 bit emulation machine. :)

        • Hmmm, i might just do that on the wii u lol

        • +1

          @Godric:

That's true, a little bit more difficult to softmod wiimode on the wiiu, but not much :)

  • Bought one for my parents! (no, that's for me)

    • +1

Thats why i ended up with two of these. Originally had one but my old man got so into it i ended up leaving that one at his place and i bought another one for me.

Thinking of buying this one for my little cousins to play with.

      • Umm, I think I'll play it with my parents then :p

        • I do. whenever I am over their place but since I don't live with them. I bought one for myself when friends are over for a little bit bowling along with some friendly sledging.

  • Stupid question but does this come with the power cable as well?

    • Stupid question but does this come with the power cable as well?

It comes with a power brick.

The console has no power supply inside, and has a strange special cable and plug (to the powerbrick).

  • +1

I've always wanted one. It's such a cheap price! I just had to get one!! Thanks OP!!

  • Wow, is that all they're worth now….

    • They are nearly 10 years old. Still fun for casual stuff, but pretty old tech. I still bought one.

      • Yeah of course, just thinking they still need to buy it, presumably spend time to clean it up etc, and make a profit at the end of it all.

        • I know what you mean, but these are basically clearance. They got them as trade-ins - which helped them sell newer consoles, and now they're just selling these to get them out of their hair.

  • -6

You know, some deals get absolutely hammered on this site. And then there's this 10 year old console getting two pages of glowing endorsements. Unbelievable.

    • +6

Dude, it's $28. What do you want for $28? So what if it's 10 years old. It has an extensive game library and a lot more family oriented games than the newer consoles.

  • Thanks OP.

Grabbed one for the kids. Been about 10 years since I owned one of these.

Also grabbed the Wii Play game too as this looks right for primary kids.

  • Thanks. Add on a 500GB WD USB hard drive and play as many game isos as you like. I used to have one but sold it ages ago. My kids miss it so i'll get another one just for the hell of it.

  • Even though we have an xbox, my kids still use the old wii quite a bit. AS others have said, add homebrew and an external drive with all your games that you have backed from the disks that you purchased

    • -1

Of course, legally purchased from an authorised retailer. No one would ever dream of playing a "backup" game otherwise.

Now, can someone please tell me how to get this thing emulating GBA so i can play pokemon games on it (that i obviously own physically)?
      pwetty pwease?

If you're new to console softmodding then modmii is probably the easiest way: https://gbatemp.net/threads/modmii-for-windows-official-supp…

Personally I've always done it manually following (some of) the guides here: http://gwht.wikidot.com/

        Once modded you just
        -Download the relevant emulator (https://gbatemp.net/threads/new-vba-gx-fork-2-3-0.371284/)
-Copy the emulator folder to a location on your SD card (plenty of guides around, the included readme.txt likely also has info),
-Copy some ROMs over to the SD card also
-Launch the emulator via the wii homebrew channel (installed as part of the softmod process)

If you want you can also install a 'forwarder' channel for the emulator to the wii home menu, which just allows you to launch it directly from the main wii menu rather than having to launch the homebrew channel and load it from there

        • Thanks heaps for all that info! Im favouriting this page and gonna use your advice to try set it up :D. Much appreciated !

        • im new and im still confused what SD card should I buy?

  • think eb might not be able to handle all sales.. very unlikely they will have so many devices in their stock seeing the response here. Yet, they still havent sold out yet.

  • +1

2009 I remember I paid $600 for the whole set with drive modchip. Since then soft mod. It was a good investment. Kid still too small to play will keep it for them for the future.

  • Order cancelled.

    Got an email:
It seems the team at MacQuarie Centre couldn't find your items. They searched high and low, but nada. Zilch. Zip. Nothing.

However, all is not lost! There may be a chance that we can ship your order directly to you from our warehouse at no extra cost!

Just click the button below to see what we can do.

When I go to order history the Wii order is not there.

    • when did you put your order in?

    • +2

Got the exact same cancellation email this morning. Placed my order at 11:30pm last night.
Funny thing is, I tried putting in an order again, and all Sydney stores reporting "1/1 Available", including Macquarie Centre.
My guess is, EBGames would rather take all our money, earn some interest, and refund them later, if needed.

      • +1

Ahh.. so, the Gerry Harvey Method™.

    • +1

I got a phone call saying they have the console for me to pickup but no Wii Sports. But they'll reserve Wii Sports and let me know when it comes in.

    • +1

Yup, just got exactly the same email. Looks like what few individuals were saying last night, about the deal not still getting ozbargained and the likelihood it'll be cancelled, turns out to be true. Hate when businesses do stupid shit like this.

      • +1

I hate how their email is worded, trying to be funny but it's lame as hell.

        • I agree. But the good thing is at least they were giving people a free delivery option instead. Thought about asking for a refund, but $28 isn't that much so I opted for the free delivery offer.

  • +1

I got my pickup confirmation :)

    • Which store?

      • Rouse hill, nsw

  • Yep mine cancelled too :(

    • which store?

      • Chadstone VIC store - I reordered from Box Hill VIC and got another cancellation however this time received the free delivery option (was not available with the chadstone one)

        • I could have picked Forest Hill, Box Hill or Doncaster. Picked Doncaster and just picked it up now! :D

        • sorry mate i picked mine up at box hill today

  • Cancelled also :-(

    • which store?

      • +1

The Galleries in Sydney - funny thing was that I checked on the status again this afternoon and was able to select free home delivery. Will see what happens …. fingers crossed.

  • Thanks OP…. bought one for reason no. 3 :)

  • +1

Now you guys are making me regret selling my wii last week with all of the games and extra controllers and bits.

We hadnt used it in 5 years and I figured it was time to go. And the Pokemon came back and now I miss snap :(

  • got my pick up email this morning.

  • +1

They cancelled my order at Sydney Galleries EB Games store. When I ordered from there, they were showing 2 in stock.

However they sent me a link to change my order to a delivery order (for 'free') from their warehouse.

I've chosen that so will see how it goes.

    • Same happened with me. My order was with EB Greenwood Plaza, North Sydney.

  • Nice one. Got one at Stafford City.

  • I just ordered one for pickup in sydney. No idea why I bought it as I already have one! OZbargain has done it again!

Do these work with gamecube games?

Also when they say refurbished, is the casing new? ie no scratches?

Also any top gamecube games to get that are not available on Wii?

    • Refurbished is a very loose word for EB, tested working and put in a bag and labelled is more correct

      • Sure beats the system in the States. Watching Hardcore Pawn (yeah quality show), they sell products 'As-is', no refunds no exchanges.

        At least we're protected!

        • It's funny because when I was there everyone was saying customer service in retail had gone mad, people could buy a large flat screen TV and take it back for a refund out of warranty just because everyone wanted the best reputation. Not sure about pawn brokers though

  • Cancelled my order at Southland VIC. Placed the order at 11:30pm last night while the sore was showing 1 remaining.

    • +1

I also ordered from Southland, EB contacted me this morning and said they will ship from their warehouse at no extra charge.

  • +1

Just got an email from EB, local store can't source the console.

So they are going to ship from their warehouse for no charge.

Not bad customer service, considering most places would just cancel the order.

    • +1

When i spoke to them, they also told me that if you order directly online you have to pay shipping for your order (unless you get one of those free shipping options), but for anything if you go into their store and order it to be delivered, delivery is free.

  • I also ordered another one (after first order cancelled) from a different store - Sydney World Square - and this order was also cancelled.

I called them up and they told me that they still have the console available, but just missing the Wii Sports game.

So if anyone else wants JUST the console, you can go pick one up from World Square Sydney.

  • +1

wow that was quickly, I got message that my item ready to pick it up.
    great

  • For anyone picking up in-store, might be worth asking what accessories/games they have!

Might be able to make a bundle up pretty cheap :)

    • what kinda accessories (non-game) should I get? Is there other controllers worth getting (nunchuck? or some motion attachment thingy)? I never got a wii so no idea…

      • +1

Motion Plus is needed for the 'newer' wii Sports - Wii Sports Resort. Archery was kinda fun on that one :)
Classic controllers, and gamecube style controllers are handy for games like Super Smash Bros
The steering wheel helps kids play Mario Kart

Get any spare remotes you can :) Or try to at least have 2 if possible

        • thanks mate :)

  • +1

in the order summery it showing
    1 x Wii Sports - Nintendo Wii $5.00
1 x Wii Console (Refurbished by EB Games) - Nintendo Wii $23.00

wondering if it is possible to return the wii sport for $5 refund which will make it sweet deal for $23.

  • +2

Thanks OP; Collected mine at Toowong store in Brisbane.

4.3E firmware, and gamecube ports on the side.

Store salesman stated they only pay $8 to buy a Wii console from a member of the public.

Obvious that no attempt was made by the store to give the thing a clean, it was pretty filthy.

I was going to buy a few classic games for the kid, but they are hideously expensive at EB - up to $40. Salesman stated because Wii U is backwards compatible, it keeps the price of Wii games high.

    • +2

Before selling a Preowned console we:

      Inspect all ports and inputs
Perform a check on all hardware components
Format the hard drive and restore the system
      Give it a good clean!

    • Yeah, the console is cheap but don't expect too many cheap Nintendo published titles. Most will cost more than the console.

    • The guy at my store said they pay $10 for the consoles. That is still a hella good price, considering 3 month warranty and all that

  • +1

Wow, that was quick ! I bought it with pickup from the Hobart store, expecting it to get an e-mail about no stock, but instead received a 'Your order is ready for collection' an hour later. Score ! Thanks OP :)

  • +8

There was a really long thing I wrote but it basically boiled down to this.

. Buy Wii for 28 here (or 29 at Cashies, since that's been their normal price near me for the last year or two but whatever)
. Buy this HDMI adapter, or a cheaper one, this is just the first response for me http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Genuine-OEM-Nintendo-Wii-HDMI-cab…
. Buy Lego Batman for 19 at EB (https://ebgames.com.au/wii-143635-LEGO-Batman-preowned-Ninte…) and look up a guide on Nintendont, it will make sense later.
. Return Lego Batman when you're done with that, and buy an actual controller with the returned money, 15 at EB, cheaper on eBay but I like the warranty, (https://ebgames.com.au/wii-139029-Wii-Classic-Controller-pre…)
. Download a shitload of Game Cube ISOs onto an SD card or hard drive and go nuts.

43 bones down, and you've got literally the best possible Game Cube emulator. You can also download (or legally acquire) Wii games, but who cares about that?

The Wii is a really easy system to hack, and there's a million emulators for it, but really, the only thing you can do here that you probably can't on your phone, is PERFECTLY play Game Cube games. Which it does, perfectly.

    • Regarding the HDMI adapter…the listing is just for a HDMI > HDMI cable? Is it supposed to be HDMI > Component?

    • +1

There is no need for lego batman to softmod a wii and install nintendont. There are plenty of other exploits (easiest would be letterbomb exploit for 4.3, or bannerbomb if you dont want to upgrade to 4.3 for some reason) that dont require a game in the way bathaxx requires batman.

      https://sites.google.com/site/completesg/exploits

Perhaps you were thinking of wiimode on a wiiu?

    • don't need batman btw? letterbomb or bannerbomb.

edit: see above comment after i posted.

    • Agreed - Batman is NOT required.

I used bannerbomb - I am pretty sure I installed it off a 1GB SD card, as I found the card the other day.

There is "all in one go" setups now days, so make sure to Google for MODERN setup guides. A lot of the information on this stuff that you find online is massively outdated.

      • so are letterbomb or bannerbomb considered "modern"?

        • The "method" is linked to the firmware version installed. I am not talking about that aspect.

To run homebrew there are numerous steps involved. This is not the place to discuss it, and it was so long ago that I cannot remember the details.

Basically, you want to find a method where you just load the SD Card, click a button and bammo it's all done.

You also need a Homebrew loader, and there are tons of choices for those. I have no idea how well they are supported, but when we were active with it the covers, artwork, manuals, etc were all automatically loaded off some servers on the internet.

It's quite a complicated system to set up, sort of like Rooting an android phone. There are easy ways and difficult complicated ways. I cannot assist more, I haven't played with this stuff for a LONG time.

Read the link that CountDuckula posted.

        • @llama: thanks llama will have a read :)

        • +1

          @homersyd:

I just skimmed that site. I recall that I liked the appearance of WiiFlow, but USBloaderGX was heaps more stable.

The whole thing is not simple, and not 100% automatic. If you do it properly, then it's really professional looking. We owned the games, but used the USB and Loader as it was heaps easier and faster. Plus the interface (especially with WiFlow) was awesome.

You need to spend time on the PC to set up the games, cover artwork, etc and be systematic in how you name and archive things. Handled correctly, it's fabulous. But there are frustrations too, as not all games will work properly on some configurations.

You can rip the games off the Console to USB. Don't try to rip from a PC, it's too hard to find the particular LG CD/DVD Drives required to do that. So, Disk > Wii > USB HDD > PC > edit and clean > USB HDD > Wii again to play.

You strip the games (and compress them) to make them smaller. All Wii games are a 100% Full DVD (I think 4.3GB) so not many fit on a USB drive. But you don't want or need all the the blank padding on the DVD… just the GAME itself which are usually quite small (especially Gamecube). You use PC software to strip that crap out, which reduces the filesize massively.

        • @llama: This is great! Thanks mate! :)

        • +4

          @homersyd:

llama is right, the process is certainly not fully automated, but if you're reasonable with PCs and can follow step by step instructions its really not so bad.

Modmii seemed to be the most popular 'newb friendly' means of modding a wii: https://gbatemp.net/threads/modmii-for-windows-official-supp…

I've always followed the manual process outlined here: http://gwht.wikidot.com/
The wii has (i think its) 256 'IOS' slots. Each is an API, the way a game talks to the wii hardware. Think of them like different versions of directx on your PC it that helps.
We need to install a few hacked IOS files, then a launcher (I use cfg usb loader) that is configured to use one of the hacked IOSs to run games.

-Upgrade the wii to 4.3 using the normal nintendo update method
-Install the homebrew channel, using an exploit (if you've upgraded the wii to 4.3 then you'll use 'letterbomb'): http://gwht.wikidot.com/homebrew-channel
-Install IOS 236, used to install the other IOSs: http://gwht.wikidot.com/ios236
          -Install 'D2X' IOS (V2.2): http://gwht.wikidot.com/d2x
-Install CFG USB loader, and configure to use the D2X IOS you installed above: http://gwht.wikidot.com/usb-loader
-Install a formwarder channel (so you can launch CFG from the wii menu directly rather than via the homebrew channel): http://gwht.wikidot.com/forwarder
-Format a usb HDD to FAT32
-Either use CFG USB launcher on the wii to rip your own wii discs, or use http://www.wiibackupmanager.co.uk/ to transfer .iso or .wbfs files to the HDD from your PC
-Plug the HDD into the USB port closest to the outside of the wii case
          -Enjoy

Emulators and other homebrew are just a matter of copying over a couple of folders to the wii's SD card once it is modded, and launching them via the homebrew channel (or installing a forwarder for each one)

I've modded 10-15 wiis for friends and family with that guide, you could do it in your sleep after the first couple.

Alternatively follow the guide on https://sites.google.com/site/completesg/hacking-guide, it seems pretty good but I've never followed it myself.

        • +1

          @CountDuckula:

Modmii seemed to be the most popular 'newb friendly' means…

I couldn't remember the name of that thing, hence my vague comments above.

However I also used the manual methods like you did.

I remember that even back many years ago, much of the information was old and complicated. It took me weeks of reading to decide on which guide to follow… and about an hour to actually do the deed.

An important thing is what CountDuckula alluded to "and can follow step by step instructions its really not so bad.". I agree with that comment, but need to add that during the process you MUST follow the step-by-step instructions to the letter. Every single step is there for a reason and they MUST be done in the order stated. One guide might have a particular step in one place, yet another guide does that seemingly same step at a different point… do not be tempted to mix up 2 guides.

So, to summarise, follow only one guide and do it EXACTLY the way that they document. If you do that, the process is painless and quick. Do it in a sloppy fashion, or deviate, and you brick the Wii or simply fail.

        • @CountDuckula: Wow so much info thanks mate!

    • -1

Which systems can be emulated? I take it the DS is too new to be emulated on the Wii, hey?

      • +2

DS can be done but it's not 100%, I'd personally just use DraStic on your phone if you really wanna scratch that DS itch.

PS1 & N64 are hit and miss, some games run great, others not at all.

Anything earlier than that and you should be right.

Game Cube is where it's at though, those (profanity) run perfectly and it's honestly the main reason I keep my Wii U.

    • Sorry guys! Yeah, I last did this on my Wii U and forgot the game was only needed for that way. Sorry :)

  • When you pick this up in store, does it come with a Wii Box?

    • Almost certainly not

    • The box is pretty small.
