Wii Console (Refurbished) + Wii Sports (Preowned) - $28 @ EB Games

3530

OK, this is one for those families who may have missed out on the Wii phase, may have not bothered, may now have kids old enough to play that weren't able to before. Whatever the reason, this is basically chump change for a fun console that can be easily soft-modded to play from USB to get more life out of it! Buy a 2nd remote and have fun :)

What's included?

Nintendo Wii Console (Refurbished, colour of console may vary)
Nintendo Wii Remote
Nintendo Wii Nunchuck
AV Cable
Sensor Bar

  • i used to do lots of softmods back in the day, still have mine all those years ago and everything still running great, if ppl miss out on the $28 ive seen these go for $35 at Pawn shops. I noticed the newer wii's dont have the GC controller ports on them anymore.

  • WOULD THIS BE WORTH A FORTUNE IN 20 YAERS TIME? GOOD INVESTMENT?

    • If it was unused in original box. Yes

    • +2

Hell no. They sold over 100 million of these worldwide.

  • I wish older PS and Xbox do the same

  • +1

for some reason mine has a lipstick mark on it.
Why are people kissing their consoles

    • I'd be concerned about the remote lol it vibrates…

      • Reminds me of this time in high school when this girl was 'playing games' with her PS2 controller….

        • +1

Sounds like a fun time ;)

      • +1

did a major wipe down with tissues and hand sanitiser

  • Expired for anyone? I get this message when I hit add to cart "Oh, no! You may only order -1 Wii Console (Refurbished by EB Games) + 1 Game (preowned) - Nintendo Wii per order." My cart is empty and I'm trying to buy just one. Same for anyone else?

    • Might still be stock in stores

    • Yep, I just got that too :(

    • Yep I get the same message when adding it to cart, bought mine yesterday.

If the sale has ended there are quite a few on cash converters webshop, some cheaper than ebgames if you pick up. If you went in-store they'd likely take less.

      • Check the inclusions and condition of the cashies ones. I checked originally when I put this post up, and many don't have remotes, or sensor bars etc.

Certainly can't compare their asking price to this.

        Buyer beware

        • Well yeah, if it doesn't list including a controller or cables then you would look at another listing. There are several for under $28 with a controller/nunchuck and all the cables.

My point is they will likely sell them for a bit less in-store if that is the online list price, and they legally have to provide a warranty so I really dont get why you'd be any more wary of buying a used console from one place over the other.

You can certainly compare their asking price to the EBgames sale, especially for the many like myself on here who have softmodded the console which reduces the perceived value of including wii sports.

Don't get me wrong the EBgames sale was a good price with many units available, I bought one myself. But if it has ended then there are comparable alternatives available for anyone still looking :)

  • Might be safe to say the sale price has ended? I just coughed up the extra $10 for their normal pricing ($38). Picking up tomorrow.

    • Will still be in-store

    • When u pick up in store, it should scan as $28. Thats what happenen to me. And u will get a refund.

    • ..

    • I saw that too when browsing online, scrolled down about 4 ads down and there was tbe $28+ wii sports version.

    • picked up and they gave me the ten bux back :)

  • +1

Picked up one from point cook, black with motion plus controller, online order only allowed Wii play but store manager happily swapped with Wii sports when i went for pickup. Thanks OP

  • +1

I went a bit crazy, ended up with another 3 remote and nunchuck along with new mario brothers….

  • Because of this deal finally I softmod my Wii to get it a new life, haven't touch it for years.

Any good classic control? Are those from eBay OK or I should get official?

      • You may get lucky and find some genuine nintendo Gamecube controllers on Gumtree if you have a look, just picked up a console + 3 controllers for $45

        • just picked up a console + 3 controllers for $45

Man, that's one heck of a score!

superforever was asking for Classic Controllers (the ones that plug into the back of a Wii remote) however.

      • Get one of these PDP ones for $28 from EB Games (there are other colours too)(ebgames.com.au)
Or if you'll like to wait, get the Hori one for $26.14 delivered from Beat the Bomb (Pikachu only)(

Are they OK for Wii? They are for Wii U.

I think I may try this one from HK for $6.37.

        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Classic-Joypad-Remote-Control…

        • Are they OK for Wii? They are for Wii U.

They work for the Wii or Wii U, since they both use the Wii remote (which the Classic Controller requires).

I have the PDP one (Wario-flavoured) and it's a good controller - responsive enough and control sticks that will last longer than an official Gamecube controller. However, it does feel a little cheap though and doesn't have that official-controller feel that we all know and love.

  • +1

picked mine up today, opened the box and wondered why it looked in such great condition, actually looks new (and its white). Spent the afternoon working out what 'softmod' and 'homebrew' means, and my downloads should be finished soon ;-)

  • An update and tip for anyone using a Mac, you can format your partition to WBFS with the usb loader gx

    • And for those on Windows WBFS Manager is old but think it still works well for managing your ISOs

    • +1

I'd strongly recommend a FAT32 drive and files transferred over in .wbfs format rather than formatting the drive to WBFS. NTFS can also be used but FAT32 is the 'safer' bet in terms of compatibility. Wii backup manager automatically creates 2 .wbfs files if you transfer a game that is over the 4GB limit of the filesystem.

You can then use the drive to also store ROMS for emulators, gamecube games, or just backups of the tools you use on your computer for setting it all up.

A WBFS formatted drive is the 'older' way of doing things.

http://www.wiibackupmanager.co.uk/ is the best tool for windows, not sure of a mac equivalent.

      • thanks for the update, so I can just convert to .wbfs and then copy those over to a FAT32 drive?

I converted an iso to wbfs and it went from 4gb to 400mb, is this all I need to copy over?

        • +1

Yep, the disc data is packaged into the wbfs format within the file so the launcher on the wii (cfg usb launcher, wiiflow etc) can run it from a normal FAT32 drive. Adding games is then just a matter of drag and drop (or using something like wii backup manager to help keep naming consistent etc).

The .wbfs file gets copied to X:\wbfs\ on the usb drive, or a subfolder.
Wii backup manager defaults to creating a folder for each game to keep things neat.

          Eg: X:\wbfs\Wii Sports [RSPP01]\RSPP01.wbfs

Note the 6 character code in the [] brackets. I believe the launchers use this to identify each game so they can download cover art/game info.

wiijmanager looks like it will do the job, although I have no experience with it it.

A list of different managers: http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/WBFS_Managers

        • Yep, games will often come out much smaller as the process of converting to .wbfs should strip out any junk/padding data that a raw disc dump would contain.

Wii sports for example is about 653MB.

I'm not sure if the manager app you are using automatically renames the file to include the game's code. Ideally find one that does if possible (in the options of wii backup manager is a setting to download a titles.txt file, which contains the names and associated codes for all games to allow it to do the renaming).

I'd assume there is at least one good mac manager program, at worst you could spin up a windows VM I guess.

        • @CountDuckula:
Yep, just did a transfer and it automatically creates the folders & renames them with the codes so WiiJManager is definitely the way to go

Thanks again for all the help

        • @impoze:

Glad it's working. Did you use modmii or follow one of the guides?

A few other things to note, unrelated to copying files to hdd:
-Ensure you disable 'wii connect 24' in the wii's settings menu, if this is on it prevents the console from fully powering down which also means it keeps the USB HDD spinning. With it disabled the HDD will spin down with the console turning off.

-Set the console to widescreen in the settings, but it's not true widescreen it's anamorphic widescreen. Meaning its just a normal 640x480 4:3 signal, but the image is squashed so that your TV can fill the screen by stretching it to 16:9 without everything looking too wide. Some games dont support widescreen so you'd need to set your TV to either stretch or not stretch the signal depending on the game. Emulators for old systems like megadrive obviously should run with your TV showing the 4:3 signal as-is (Pillarboxes aka black bars down the sides of the screen).

        • I used letterbomb and a YT video

is there anything that I need to set in USB GX to get it to detect .wbfs in a fat32 partition?

        • @impoze:

I'm not sure sorry, I have always used CFG USB Launcher.
If its a later version of USB GX I would think it would auto detect them. Do you have the HDD connected to the USB port closest to the outside of the wii's case?

        • @CountDuckula:
do you have a link to a guide for setting up CFG loader?

I just loaded the app and it reads the wbfs files on the HDD but I don't think I have the ISOs setup

        • @impoze:

Do you mean IOSs? So the launcher now shows the game but is unable to load it?

You should have D2X V8(can use the later V10 versions but no need if V8 works) base 56 IOS installed to IOS slot 248 (or another free slot around that number). For CFG you then need a config file to tell the launcher which IOS to use (they normally default to 249, but that isn't used any more as it causes issues with being detected).

The steps for installing the modded IOS files can be found here: http://gwht.wikidot.com/d2x Pay attention to the 'What you should install first' section, ensure you have installed IOS236 before proceeding.
The download for the D2X installer linked on that page only includes D2X V6, you need to download V8final from here https://code.google.com/archive/p/d2x-cios/downloads and extract the zip file's contents to X:\apps\d2x-cios-installer on your SD card.

Steps for setting up cfg usb launcher are here. You'd want to go into the settings in cfg after you install it and update as it will be WAY out of date: http://gwht.wikidot.com/usb-loader

        • @CountDuckula:

i had to update to d2x v10 and it works now

        • @impoze:

Nice, glad you got it going.

The main difference after V8 final is increased HDD compatibility, possibly at the expense of emunand compatibility (running wiiware/virtual console games from USB/SD rather than internal storage). There are other methods to do that anyway and the only wiiware game you need is muscle march (its just bizarre) :)

WD HDDs (either 2.5" or 3.5") seemed to be the best bet from memory, although with recent drives who knows.

        • @CountDuckula:

, if this is on it prevents the console from fully powering down which also means it keeps the USB HDD spinning

You can always hold the power button for a few seconds to fully turn it off.

      • I'd strongly recommend a FAT32 drive

If you use FAT32 you will have problem with game over 4GB like Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I have problem backup my smash bros, have to use WBFS.

        • This isn't an issue as wii backup manager automatically splits games over 4GB into 2 .wbfs files, which any decent loader supports :)

Formatting a drive to wbfs was a deprecated method back while the wii was still a current console.

        • @CountDuckula:

Seem it didn't work for me. It stopped in the middle when I install game from disc on Wii. May be OK with ISO file on PC.

        • @superforever:

Strange, later launchers should auto-split (im pretty sure CFG does), if not you could always rip to a cheapo 16GB thumb drive formatted to ntfs then copy to your usb hdd via PC and wii backup manager.

wbfs formatted drives had issues with corruption, and the hassle of it not being directly readable on a PC. Whatever works though :)

        • @CountDuckula:

So far I have no problem with wbfs on my 500GB USB hard disk.

        • @superforever: Oh it works, but if you search old threads on gbatemp or other similar forums from after fat32 support came in you'll find countless moderators and others who know far more than me about the wii warning people off wbfs formatted drives.

        • @CountDuckula:

I am already using the latest 5.1 version and I also saw the split option in USBLoader settings but I am not sure why it stopped in the middle of installing.

May be I will try it later again since I have the discs and ISO files.

If I reformat the drive will I loose my saved games? Are they store in the Wii internal memory instead of the USB drive?

        • @superforever:

I tried to use Wii manager to transfer smash bros to another fat32 drive but still didn't work. It said completed but error and didn't create the game on the drive but game with smaller size are OK.

        • @superforever:

          http://www.wiibackupmanager.co.uk/

I can say without a doubt I have transferred games over 4GB using that program and it creates the 2 files no problem. There's even an option in its settings to split to 1/2/4GB segments.

"Automatic or manual selection of WBFS file split size. Automatic means unlimited on NTFS, otherwise 4GB."

If you're having issues I'd suggest posting on the wii gbatemp forum.

        • @CountDuckula:

Yes I am using this program and tried 2 or 4GB.

Do you have smash bros? I think it may only happened to this one.

        • @superforever:

I have it on my wii's HDD (transferred long ago), I dont have the files on my PC any more though.

  • i ordered for a pick up from a store. order still shows "Processing". do i need to worry about it?

i ordered with my friends credit card(somehow my card was not working). order has different billing address than my friends billing address.is this billing address difference going to be a problem?

    Thanks.

    • EB may call to verify your order if using a different credit card. Paypal is the easiest.

  • Cheap@$$ Tip : Crack the Wii and get games online.

    • Pretty sure that's what most of the discussion is about already ;)

  • Should I get component cable or Hdmi to Wii? Both roughly the same price.

    • hdmi

      • A lot of people are saying the picture quality is a matter of personal preference :/

      • They said 1080p upscaling, is it really make a difference?

        http://www.cnet.com/au/products/neoya-wii2hdmi-converter-for…

        Doesn't seem any difference:

"THE BOTTOM LINE Though it won't improve the picture quality had on a current Wii component connection, the Wii2HDMI adapter successfully carries audio and video over a single HDMI signal."

        • There won't be any picture difference over component. But if it's the same price then go hdmi for easier connection. That's the only real benefit. Or unless your TV doesn't have component input.

        • @CVonC:

There won't be any picture difference over component.

Yeah I am using component now so no need to use HDMI unless it can really upscaling.

        • All my HDMI ports are taken, so Component means I don't have to keep swapping out HDMI cables

  • +1

Finally! Been wiiting 10 years for this deal.

  • I picked mine up yesterday and had a play with it. The sensor bar was faulty so took it back and they happily replaced it at Morley galleria WA. They don't have anymore stock. Now to softmod!

  • Looks like it's expired. Back to normal price of $38 with no games.

  • +5

Well that was a fun ride :) Honestly I was surprised with the popularity of this, but good to see some people dusting off their old consoles to breathe new life into them, and newcomers learning the fun of this console :)

  • Picked mine up on the weekend. Thanks OP.

Good conditioned as well. I already had one but for $28 why not another :)

Will softmod again. I think I will mainly use my second one for Gamecube games :)

Is the genuine nintendo component cable better or are those $9 ebay ones good enough? Can you tell the difference?

Also is it worth picking up a genuine GC controller or a wii classic controller is as good/better?

    Thanks,
    K.

    • Gamecube Controller plugs straight into the Wii. The Wii Classic Controller plugs into the Wiimote. The newer model of the Wii Console, lacks the Gamecube ports, therefore the only option is the Wii Classic Controller.

      • Ok thanks. I have the one with the GameCube ports.

Are there any games on GameCube that is worth getting that is not on the wii? Also is the gc controller better than the wii classic controller?

        • Are there any games on GameCube that is worth getting that is not on the wii?

Ahhh, there are so many good ones, but almost all Gamecube games are pricey in general. Here are my personal picks:

          • Super Mario Sunshine
          • F-Zero GX
          • Paper Mario: 1000 year door
          • Mario Kart Double Dash
          • Spiderman 2

Also is the gc controller better than the wii classic controller?

In my opinion, yes - but if you were to buy an second-handed official one, it will have lots of wear-and-tear since Nintendo have stopped producing them a long time ago…

…but they did produce these Super Smash ones as one-offs (if you can find them, that is).
          Official Gamecube controller - $28 (in-store only)

        • @silverrat23:

Thanks Silver. Are the super smash controllers official nintendo ones? As good as the ones with nintendo gamecube on the front of it instead of that logo?

        • @k3nnis:

Yes, they are official controllers. They work and play like just the old ones (the Nintendo Gamecube text printed on the front).

        • @silverrat23:

Thanks I will pick one up then. Or 2 :)

Is there any reason to buy a GameCube if I wanted to play GameCube games when I already have a wii that has the ports for GC controls?

      • Got the newer model black console, so I guess Wii Classic Controller is the only way to go.

  • Thanks OP. I got mine earlier today. Controllers were icky and console look clean inside and out except for mismatching gamecube cover thing and some scratches.
The normal Wii composite video cable looks dated with 480i resolution. I will buy component cables later. I can see the lines on the screen when playing games but it's ok.

  • +1

On the subject of SD cards, I can confirm I haved had no issues using a 32GB SD card for adding Homebrew and using it to run Not64 or Gamecube ISOs

  • Anyone know which rechargeable Eneloop battery works on the Nintendo wii Controller?

    • I use the standard eneloops in mine. They shouldn't use up too much power.

      • oh, i see . I just wanted to make sure i didn't buy the wrong battery ..

  • I've received my package this afternoon. The console (a white unit) looks decently clean: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/155414/41249/wii_conso…

There was also a Wii sports game included, which I took out when I opened the package. https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/155414/41250/wii_game.…

PS: Guys, I am not a gamer and never owned a Wii console before so are the items in the package (minus an old SD card which I can easily find somewhere in my place) everything I need for the console to use? I saw people talking about an HDMI cable and other stuff etc here lately.

    • +1

The HDMI/Component cable are an upgrade which is kinda recommended for new TVs. Hell they were recommended when the Wii first came out!

It depends what connections are on the TV you're plugging it into as to which cable is more practical for you.

But you have everything there to start with and play Wii Sports. The SD card etc are for when you want to make it run 'backed up' games

      • +1

That helps a lot. I have a several year old Samsung Full HD LCD TV & I am sure there's an HDMI cable somewhere around here too so will give it a try on the weekend. Thanks, Spackbace (unless I wanna type your username out, I always mistake it for backspace, which is, I think, why you've a backspace on your avatar, you sneaky, you! lol).

        • I always think of Spaceback ^^

        • +1

          @CVonC: That's some mind-fcuk shit he's doing to us there. :D

    • whats that grey thing on the bottom right hand corner?

I've received my package this afternoon. The console (a white unit) looks decently clean: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/155414/41249/wii_conso…

i didn't receive that on my Wii ..

      • +1

        It's the stand

You can always buy charging stands if you also want to buy rechargeable battery packs for the remotes

        • do you mean stand for the Wii Console to go on?

also, whats the benefit of charging in the charging stand you recommend, compared to charging just on the Eneloop charger?

      • <— what he said. :)

  • is this wii remote (which comes with this piece) is non-motion or motion controller? first time owning Wii. still waiting for package.

    • +1

      non-motion or motion controller?

I think it's random (remember that the second-hand stock is from other people who traded theirs in). Some had regular remotes and others had the Motion-plus.

    • +1

They're all motion controllers. Newer consoles got the 'Motion plus' controller, which is needed for newer games (however there are add-on accessories to add the motion plus to older remotes)

So, straight out of the box, you can play the Wii Sports that comes with it (and many other games), but you won't be able to play Wii Sports Resort, for example.
