Nice post, that's a great price

  • How do you install radio in Toyota car where the car radio bracket is not square ? Eg Toyota Corolla, Camry, aurion ?

    • You would most probably need a fascia kit

    • Buy a bracket off ebay to suit the car in question :) most of the time its a double din conversion kit.

    • +6

Its some what easy if like working with your hands. Ive done this a few times.
Easiest way is to google is the following way, "2013 Toyota Camry aftermarket head unit install". You will get results whereby people have step by step instructions about how to do it.

You may get some American pages/forum results but remember that generally the only difference is the side the steering wheel and dash cluster is. The components of these cars are the same.

To make wiring easy you will need something like the following to connect to your head unit. http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Harne…
      &
To connect to your car stereo wiring http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TOYOTA-CAMRY-ACV40R-AHV40R-2006-2…

Then you connect these wiring harnesses together.
      Hope this helps.

      • +1

the total of the three parts is around $49! Plus the price of the stereo.
I am considering this guy instead.
        http://www.ebay.it/itm/112020091898?euid=399d10230e1c4956b9a…
        Anyone ever heard of it?
I am not fussy about power, loudness stuff, etc.. I am after the king of the tightarse car stereo.
Of course I don't want it to lose the buttons.

      • +1

Buying those two harnesses you linked will nearly cost as much as this receiver itself.

Is it cheaper to do a DIY soldering job? Or should I just find cheaper ones on AliExpress?

        • +1

Yep that would be the cheapest way, i have also done it like this in the past, not easy with restrictive space.

Also to consider, for what ever reason you want to change the head unit at a later time back to the stock head unit, you will have to find a harness for the stock head unit unless you save the harness when you cut it.

Ive been wanting to get one of these stereo things for a while so i could replace my 2001 mazda default one, so i could listen to my own music. Is there any compatability issues i should be looking at before purchasing? And are they fairly easy to change out? Thanks

    • +1

What does you '2001 Mazda' head unit look like? Is it single or double DIN or is it one of those integrated types? Wiring-wise it should just be a simple matter of buying an adaptor cable. Most head units can be replaced in a matter of minutes with only a few screws and a few unclip/clip plug & socket connections. See if you can find a link to an online pic of the head unit you've already got and we'll take it from there…

      • Hi there,

Thanks for your reply, its a double din. And looks like this:

        http://www.goauto.com.au/mellor/mellor.nsf/0/9F7980AF5FFB0F1ACA256A8C000DF066/$file/2001.5.17nAUB01B_souA%20_Mazda_SP20.jpg?OpenElement

        • If you still want a stock look.

          You can purchase this:
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Car-MP3-Music-Player-3-5mm-Audio-…

Plugs into the back of the OEM headunit CD stacker port (i believe). Mines currently on its way.

        • +2

I assume it's a Mazda 323 SP20. If so then you could go down the inexpensive 'universal' Single-DIN adaptor route for around $15-$20 but to make the install quick, easy and 'factory fresh' I recommend you get something like this instead: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AERPRO-MAZDA-323-SP20-HATCHBACK-O… Costs more than the head unit but it'll make a world of difference and allow you to DIY the install. You may want to also enquire with those guys about an adaptor cable (if required) and prepare to add another $20 to the overall bill.

So, $57 for the Head Unit + $60 for the proper Mazda DIN adaptor + $20 for the adaptor cable you're looking at $137 total… but yeah, it'll be a massive improvement to your in-car audio enjoyment.

        • Wow the Mazda DIN adapter is red hot!!!

        • @SteveAndBelle: sorry, yeah it is a Mazda 323 Astina Shades Hatchback. Thanks for this info, will have a look further into this!

        • @flylin:

Would the adapter work with this? It doesn't come with the box thingy in the middle.

        • @Kingfabay:

Not sure to be honest. The videos and forums Ive watched all have the box. Its only $5 so its worth the punt.

      • Hi Steveandbelle

Wonder how to change on Mazda 3 2005
        The HU is like this

        https://www.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.car…

        Thanns

        • +2

Just as easy but you need to buy a whole fascia kit. Luckily the Mazda 3 fascia only covers the audio system so something like this will do the trick: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mazda-3-BK-2004-09-FACIA-KIT-fasc… I've fitted a Double-DIN AV system to a Lancer and its fascia kit included the AC vents so cost twice as much… but everything just went together beautifully and resulted in a 'factory fresh' DIY install.

Also, for any cars with factory fitted Steering Wheel controls then there should also be adaptor cables available to allow control of aftermarket head units however only if the head unit itself has an input for external controls and I'm pretty sure a unit of this calibre wouldn't. The Lancer I mentioned above is an example of a typical install for a car with an 'integrated' head unit with Steering Wheel controls. The Fascia + Pioneer-to-Mitsubishi adaptor cable + Steering Wheel adaptor was available as a kit on eBay but wasn't cheap. From memory it was around $200 but it's all relative because the head unit I installed was a high-end Pioneer with DAB & GPS etc. and cost around $1500 by itself anyway so the extra $200 on bits & pieces to make it look & operate as though it came that way from the factory really wasn't a problem for the owner.

        • @SteveAndBelle: thanks for that, so i think, its better for me to find a Double Din HU to perfectly fit in those fascia kit

        • +1

@eegos: Only you can answer that question (if it was a question) ;) Most inexpensive Double-DIN head units are just over-priced single-DINs in a larger box with larger buttons and larger bouncy light displays. Not bad at all, just bigger and more expensive for no better specs than the one in this deal. The 'better' Double-DIN head units (at least the known branded ones anyway) start to kick in with models that have a full 6-7" touch-screen but of course you're looking at around $300+ then.

If money is tight then you could get the Double-DIN fascia kit as per the link above then just get the Single-DIN Pioneer in this deal and get an inexpensive Single-DIN 'pocket' to fill the hole. Then, later on you can simply, quickly & easily pop this cheapie Pioneer Single-DIN out and replace it with a nice Double-DIN of your liking/budget/expectations.

EDIT: Looks like this Pioneer is out of stock now anyway but hey it's all food for though so you're ready for the next time you see a bargain appear :)

        • @SteveAndBelle: yeah. The time I replied your comment above its OOS
          Snoozer loser. Hehe
          Thanks for the enlightment SteveAndBelle

this is great, shame it cant be installed in most modern cars

    • shame it cant be installed in most modern cars

      Why can't it?

      • Some cars have the HVAC controls integrated in with the stereo system. Falcon's in particular do this.

        • +1

BA / BF falcons can still be done with a fascia kit. Most modern cars will have these features anyway, this is just a basic head unit with Bluetooth.

        • +3

          @bhubb18:
You don't even need a kit. I just removed the "tissue-box / cig lighter" unit, cut away enough plastic to fit the radio, and reinstalled it. The radio comes with a bezel for the front panel, so it does not look too bad.

    • +2

Look on gumtree, people love shoving cheap ugly units in modern alfa/bmw/audi, they just care about a loud stereo and not 99% of the computer and its useful functions.
I mean a engine light is good enough? critical low oil and the engine is getting ruined? who cares, turn triple M up

      • i wouldn't say i've seen many in "modern" ones. Perhaps 20 year old 3 series shitboxes, but no chance of finding one of these an in F30 3 series

  • Bought one, thanks. Had to choose delivery (+$10) since it didn't seem to be available in any nearby stores (lower northshore).

    • Same, ordered one with delivery.
Now have to find instruction how to replace my parents' 2001 Nissan X-Trail factory stereo with this one. No prior experience doing it myself :-/

  • I currently have a Pioneer Mp3 Player DEH-P3550MP. If I buy this, can I easily pull my existing one out, put that in and connect a cable and it's done?

    • 95% sure that will work fine. I've done this with Sony headunits.

      • Thanks, that's what I'm hoping, that its the same size etc and a clear easy replacement. If it's too fiddly I could return it and get a refund. Cheers

  • +2

"Digital Media Receiver" makes it sound like the tuner can receive DAB+ stations, but it cannot, so just a heads up to others. I personally would not get a new unit without DAB+. Still a good price….

    • what do you mean by cannot receive DAB+ stations? please elaborate, thanks!

But in a nutshell, you get all the regular AM/FM stations plus heaps of other stations (I get about 59 in Melbourne) all in crystal clear CD quality sound. My new Mustang and Mondeo both have the Ford Sync 2 which has DAB+ and it's awesome!

      • Digital radio. Meaning AM broadcasters. Which all broadcast on the internet. DAB+ is more convenient though in that it has normal radio controls which makes it nicer than an app/device.

  • +2

At this price - I was thinking of mounting one of these into the wall of my house. I'd get a AC to DC inverter from Jaycar for $50. Picking up some cheap sony speakers from SCA for $30.

Then voila - a nice little speaker set for when I'm working in the garage. Bluetooth. Aux. USB. 10/10!

Then I realised, I've got too many sets of speakers already and as fun as this would be, I'm just wasting money… :(

    • +1

Isn't it cheaper to just get a stereo that has Bluetooth and AUX?

      • +3

It is - but this would be a fun little project. I personally am a petrol head, so it would be a 'cool' little thing to have in the home for the novelty factor.

    • +1

I'd get a AC to DC inverter from Jaycar for $50

Inverter is the other way around.
You just need a 12V power supply, which is cheaper. Don't you have a few lying around?
It probably only needs an amp or two for the kitchen.

      • Yep. You're correct. 12V PSU is what I'd need.

The on board 50w x 4 should be plenty. I think it equates to about 17watts RMS.

Later if I'm feeling like 'updating' it, I can probably find a KTTP 445 and hard wire that in or a decent 2 channel amp(but this would stress my PSU a bit more than I would like for home use).

12V PSU - I don't have a few lying around unfortunately. I have an old PC PSU, where I could probably grab the 12V rails from and do it.. anyway. I'm just dreaming here. I'm not going to spend the money and do this, when I've got a simple Bose Soundlink Mini (received as a present). This whole idea is completely unnecessary, but so cool..

  • So how much would installation typically cost for a standard car ?

    • I'm hoping $0 for me. Already have a Pioneer MP3 player installed a few years ago so all the cabling is already done. Im hoping it's just a remove, replace and plug in and I'm done. If not, getting a refund is an option. My initial cabling plus installation was approx a couple hundred dollars.

  • Nice price. A shame it is as badly designed as all the others!
Please give me some big fat PAUSE, SKIP <, SKIP > , and SOURCE buttons that I can use from the driving position without having to bend down and squint.

I know, I should just pay more $$$ to connect the steering wheel controls.

    • Don't worry this ones designed so you have to take your eyes and one hand off the road as you fumble about for your phone and turn it on then press pause. May involve one hand juggling if you own a phablet.

      It's totes better :p

      • There should be music controls on the radio for bluetooth.
On my Sony, it is '3' for pause (a tiny button under the display) . Works for podcasts, spotify, etc.

  • damnit. i just bought a pioneer unit that is almost the same as this, about a month ago, for $150 :(

    • are u happy with the unit?

  • +1

At first glance I was thinking holy cow that is cheap for an A/V reciever o.0

  • +1

If only I didn't have to recode my ECU to get a headunit, this would have been very tempting.

Bluetooth & Pioneer for <$60 is a damn good deal.

  • thanks scotty

  • super deal, already shipped!

  • +4

Another good deal would be Sony DSX-A60 220W Receiver with Bluetooth for $79. Wasn't the cheapest so far (it was $71.40 last Boxing Day), but when Spackbace posted it for $95.20 somehow it got lots of votes :)

    • Are you familiar with both? Which would you get if both were equally as good for the price?

      • +1

Avoid the Sony Head units. I had two. one replaced on warranty due to poor reception, received the replacement had the same issue.

I'm going to buy this to replace that, and Sony won't include a external mic rendering the BT handsfree useless until you buy their mic @30 dollars or there about.

        • Thanks for the input. I'm actually surprised that it doesn't come with the mic as the BT hands free seems to be the drawcard over the Pioneer. No way would I pay $30 for it, could you just heatshrink and solder up a connection to the back of the HU and use a $2 mic?

My last sony head unit was the 'black face' OLED beast circa 2005 which was fantastic rocking that with my P plates and Cadence 500w RMS 5ch amp with JBL 12", Pioneer front splits and Cadence rear 6" in my '92 prelude that I did every single cable run and solder myself. Now I'm stuck with the 2006 base level BMW 320i stock setup which I can't even change the headunit without paying a silly amount to recode the ECU as the HU is used as a trip computer also. It sounds so flat and hollow, but I make do.

          I can't avoid nostalgia :)

    • +1

I think ill grab one of these. I have a Sony unit in the car already which makes the swap easier. I find it really annoying having to buy adapters that match the car/headunit maker.

  • +2

Can the USB port be used to charge phones etc?

    • +1

      Yes.

    • IT does not charge or support play back for the iPhone 6 over usb.

  • +1

1 x pair of RCA outputs

For anyone looking to expand with amps/speakers I recommend a head unit with 3 pairs of RCAs (front, rear, sub).

    • Why not one or two?
If you had two, one pair could go to an amp, the other to the sub
If you had only one, you buy a better amp that can handle more channels, so speakers plus sub
Rather than letting the head unit control it all

      • Why not one or two?

The convenience having full control at the head unit of front to rear fade balance, along with sub LPF/phase and other adjustments etc. far outweighs flapping around going back and forth to the amp/amps to make adjustments.

  • +1

Awesome price for this unit. Does it really support Siri eyes free though I wonder? Manual for 285BT and 385BT says that only 385BT does (page 11 on manual) —>
    http://www.pioneer-mea.com/operation-manual/Car%20Audio/MVH-…

Probably just a typo in manual. I picked up 385BT in recent JB sale and love the launch Siri or Google Now from stereo feature so thought I'd mention it as I remembered from reading manual.

  • The specs on jbhifi site differ to ones at pioneer

    http://www.pioneer-car.eu/au/products/mvh-285bt

    Pioneer suggest its 4x100W

Actually seems a different model: One on sale has an x in the model number. Perhaps they are different models but I can't find it on the pioneer site

  • So my car is a toyota 2005 Yaris Sedan, does anyone know exactly what parts I'll I need to change this receiver into the car? Thanks in advance

    • No idea what a Yaris interior looks like, but the standard Toyota stuff is:

ISO cable adaptors $15, Toyota antenna adaptor $10, Single Din fascia kit $20 - $50.

If the car is the type where you can't see the standard Toyota rectangle unit, you'll need a full replacement fascia kit which are usually $100-$150 if you can find one.

      • No fascia kit needed. Yaris runs standard Toyota size 200mm double DIN, TA13 will need "ears" and a pocket. There is no need for an antenna adaptor on an '05 model.

        • Hi Pinz, You sound like you know this area well. I currently have a Pioneer Mp3 Player DEH-P3550MP. If I buy this, can I easily pull my existing one out, put that in and connect a cable and it's done? Thanks for your help

        • @Alex10: Sometimes it's as easy as that, but the manufacturers do have a tendency to change connectors from time to time. One way to tell is looking at the manuals online for each of the units and see if the connection on the head unit looks the same. But the true way to check is removing the unit and comparing the existing plug with the replacement unit plug to make sure wire colours marry up.

  • I have Honda Civic 2005 Sedan and the ent unit in the car says anti-theft. Does that mean I won't be able to open and replace it ?

    • +1

No it means as soon as you disconnect the power on the radio, the next time you plug it back it it will ask for the security code otherwise it's a brick.

      • Thanks mate

  • Is there any better place to Wiring Harness ?

If it helps, I have Mitsubishi Lancer 2007 Sedan

    • -1

I usually go to Autobarn, their customer service and advise is always really good.

  • Does anybody know if this supports steering wheel controls? (for a vx commodore)

  • If anyone in GC or Brissie areas that needs help with fitting, send me a PM or visit my site for more contact info.

WMA, MP3, WAV, and AAC audio files

It's 2016 and still no FLAC support? If you are going to save gobs of money by not including a CD
player in it, it would be nice to play more than dumb WAVs in the device natively (if we want lossless). It's not like royalties need to be paid for FLAC.

Regardless of claimed regular price, to me it's not worth a cent more than it's selling for.

    • As a fello audiophile I completely agree that people like us need FLAC support but lets be realistic - for 99% of people, mp3 and aac support is more than enough for them to enjoy all of their media.

Expired unfortunately. Had it in my cart but those who hesitate are lost

  • crap, i thought this will last til the weekend for me to have a look at it personally in store =( bummer!

  • Glad I jumped on this when I had the chance. Now I just need to learn how to install it. Thanks Scotty.

  • Got one before it became out of stock. Thank you Scotty :)

  • Can confirm there are a couple around in stores in Vic, not many in stock though.

  • I bought one too as my car Peugeot 307CC had a factory provided unit which doesn't support any form of connectivity to mobile.

If any of you have any idea how difficult or easy it will be to swap the stereo unit for Peugeot 307 CC, kindly let me know. I don't have prior expecting in this.

If you have an idea on cheapest service centres in Sydney to get this done, please let me know that as well. Thanks!

    • YouTube it, had a quick search and theres videos for your car

  • these are pretty easy to install just need a iso harness and a few minutes of your time , thanks scotty

  • Went and bought one, great price for a great unit, been looking for a while and finally caved

  • For those who have not yet had confirmation, I have just had a call from Modbury JB Hi-Fi - they miscalcualted their stock and have cancelled my order. I had some sympathy for the polite lass whose task was to ask me if I "wanted a store credit or a refund to my Paypal account.".
FWIW, I took the refund - and have opened a dispute with paypal for item not delivered just in case the refund takes as long as managements ability to relate stock numbers to the number of orders confirmed…

    • What a shame.
      Luckily I received mine yesterday.

    • Phew - I went to modbury to collect my headunits. The checkout chick said they were flying out the door
