Telstra BYO M Plan $50/mo 5GB Data - Plus Existing Contract Break Fees Waived

190

Got this special Telstra upgrade, it may be a targeted offer but not in the position to know for sure. The best bit is around if you're still in contract they will waive any remaining costs. Chances are if your current plan is > $50/mo OR you have more than 12 months left on your contract you may be rejected - but could be worth a try as there is no fine print to say otherwise.

"Upgrade to this BYO plan today, and we’ll give you massive data and voice inclusions to use in Australia. And if you’re still in contract, we’ll waive any remaining costs so you can switch straight away."

Details:
* $50/mo
* 5GB/mo + $1000 calls + unlimited SMS
* 12 month contract
* Can break contract later on if you're buying a new phone
* Offer ends 31st August 2016

This offer was provided as a link in my Telstra online account.

Ouch! So much for rewarding a loyal customer…

      • I pay $30 for this deal with 7GB
They actually called me and said they had a better deal for me LOL

        • +1

How did you get it for $30? I got the 7GB for $40! Feeling ripped off right now lmao.

  • +6

got 10 gb with optus for $36 a month.

    • -4

Got 11gb on Telstra 12 month contract + data share sim for $38/m

      • +1

        What!?

      • What the (profanity)? What's the source?

    • Yup same.

$40 sim only plan with 10% off using myunidays code. Ditched Telstra for Optus which actually has better reception at my home and work.

  • +1

You could upgrade to the Mx plan which is $40. Most of the reps will say there will be a fee you need to pay but if you ask nicely, they'll waive it for you.

I've tried it before and saved $20. Live chat is usually the best way to do it. If the rep doesn't want to do it, end chat and find another rep.

    • I was wondering if perhaps someone who was on a higher plan would try it… the word "upgrade" is there though, so that might rule it out.

      • I just "upgraded" from a 6month old $50/month 2.5gb Data and similar calls plan to this ($40/month, 5gb).

Did it via online chat. I just asked if they could offer it to me though I was only 6months through a 12month byo plan. They said yes.

        Only took 10 minutes.

        • So is it 40, or 50?
          The link says 50?

        • +1

          @albanyson:

It's $50 but for a limited time $40/- if you sign up for 12 months. You get charged $50/- but a $10 discount is applied each month.

Do it via online chat, only took 10min. Remember to save the chat transcript to refer back to if they don't honour the deal.

      • Hi closey
Can you do me a favour? Can you pm me and i give you my email address and you forward the email offer you received from Telstra (without your personal info of course)?

        • +1

It was a link inside the My Account section.

    • My contract runs out in a month, cheers for that :) $90 down to $40, and 2gb to 5gb,happy day :)

    • +1

Had a month left, was able to swap to this $40/month plan! Cheers :)

  • +1

If you can handle going via Amway they do better BYO plans, specifically 10gb data rather then 5gb for 52.50 PM

    https://www.telstra.com.au/amway/mobile-plans

  • +1

    Its targetted.
Telstra gained a lot of new customers due to the iphone 6 release.
They wish to retain as many of these customers as possible.
The contracts are invite only and these customers have notes on there accounts.

    • So is the new 90 dollar BYO plan as well, shame because 20gb of data would be mighty nice

      • Yes the 90 byo would be awesome, and also free international call to selected countries.

  • I assume they don't waive handset repayments? Got about 8 months left on my HTC M9 contact.

    • You could pay off what is left of your M9 contract. You'd probably save money in the future.

      • Likely to be true. Will do the math.

      • I'm on the $45 casual plan with 12 months to go. Would it be worth it to switch? Considering i could get a new phone now. You know that allow for new phone every 12 months.

    • -1

I think you could probably force them to pay for the handset because on the webpage it says:

And if you’re still in contract, we’ll waive any remaining costs so you can switch straight away.

Edit: Actually says in the 'Things you need to know' section that it covers the device payments

Offer ends 31 August 2016. You must recontract to the recommended BYO plan tier or higher to be eligible for an early termination charges/device payment contract waiver.

      • Confirmed via online chat that this is a targeted offer:
"I can see that this offer is on the basis of the invitation. If you have received any invitation you can surely opt for this upgrade, however if you have not received the invitation then I'd request you to please wait for the invitation ."

      • I applied for the $60/m 10GB plan since it said they'd waive all remaining costs. Looking at my account it looks like they've already changed me over to the new plan as data allowance has been bumped up to 11GB (kinda weird) and ETC costs have changed to $420. Hopefully there's no extra cost for the remaining handset fee

        • +1

DIs you receive an offer or did you follow the link above?

        • @rye: I went to the link below for the $60/m plan

        • +1

@Twirtle2: How long did you have lest on your contract?

        • @rye: from memory it was going to end in April next year. None of that information is showing in the telstra app anymore though.

        • Hopefully the ETC (early termination charges?) only apply if you break the new 12 month contract.

  • I'm on $50 for 7gb?
I think this was a previous offer posted on here..

  • -6

For $50 I expect at least 8gb.No deal.

  • +1

I'm half way through my 24 month contract on a Go Mobile $95 plan with a iPhone 6S. Submitted my request and got a message saying "Winning! Your order has been sent. Once complete, you'll receive a confirmation SMS…"

    • Hello Rye,
Can you confirm if you received the targeted email or just via the link above? And did it all go through ok and you received your confirmation sms?
      Thanks
      Ray

      • +1

        Hi Ray
I never received a targeted offer, just followed the link.
I'll let you know how I go.

        • +1

I never received the offer but just followed the link provided earlier. New data cap was applied this morning also added another data share sim for the iPad

        • @MATTDAMON: sounds promising! what plan were you on before? Did you have any handset repayments?

        • @rye:

Also how long did you both have on your contract?

        • +1

@raytriplej: I have 12 months left. Haven't received confirmation yet. My plan hasn't been changed.

        • @rye: Was on the 95 dollar accelerate plan but with 6gb data. Only had 1 month left on contract but no handset repayment.

      • +1

No go Ray. Because I couldn't provide a copy of the invitation I received, they would only waive my contract fee. I would still be up for a device payment fee, even though I don't pay a handset payment each month. If I had less than 6 months left on my contract they would waive all fees.

        • Thanks for the update Rye

    • I chatted to telstra support. They want me to payout my device on the iPhone 6s plus 128 GB phone. My plan fee will wavered if I proceed with the go ahead.

You will need to payout your iPhone 6S.

      • I don't pay any handset payments for my 6S, hoping this will go through. If not, I'll talk to support. Did you get a targeted offer?

      • Did chat today. They confirmed the same thing, they would waive the service contract fee but not the device, (even though I don't have any device payments).
If I had 6 months or less remaining on my contract, they would of waived the device payment

  • +1

    Any good toll$tra prepaid offerings?

  • I've currently got a "loyal customer" discount - I wonder if it'd still apply?

  • +4

Why would I commit to a 12 month BYO plan when I can get 6GB + unlimited calls/texts for $40 on prepaid with no commitment… and that $40 can be transferred via creditme2u to my partners/kids accounts to re-use?

    • Gee that looks an attractive plan - any downsides vs a contract?

      • New number each month or costs/time of porting.

        • It's not new number each month. You simply re-charge your existing sim/number. You can even set up auto recharge.

If it's the plan there data is split into on and off peak, and 3gb therefore applies to times where I'd personally be at home connected to my home wifi. That massively reduces the usefulness of the data for me.

Not a biggie for most, but I don't think Prepaid gets Messagebank Plus which means no visual voicemail for supported devices.

    • Plus you can use credit to buy stuffs on Google play. Eg Pokemon go, hearthstone, Netflix etc. If you don't use any of it you can get 50% cash back and it means you only pay 20 bux for 6gb and all. Much better deal IMO.

      • How do you get the 50% cash back? Is it just for next month's credit?
The 40 freedom plus plan, I didn't know you could get cash back?

      • Hi, do you know if they still offer this with the credit deal? I thought that was a limited time offer that finished already as I can,t find anything about it anymore on their site

        • +1

I'm pretty sure it's still active. I mean it is on my account so would apply to all Freedom Plus customers. It's prepaid so if bonuses/features are added or removed from a plan, they affect all customers, new and old.

          See: https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/tppm_drawdown

        • @dazweeja:
Thanks dazweeja - hopefully they are still continuing, I might give it a go and see. I signed up a few months back when the website explicitly stated the additional credits as a bonus but had an expiry date. At the time I asked a rep in chat who told me it would only continue to give bonus credits to people who activated before that offer expired (however, different reps do provide different advice sometimes so fingers crossed).

  • Includes device payout as well!! Hope I can swap.

    (From the fine print:)

Waiver of Early Termination Charges: Offer ends 31 August 2016. You must recontract to the recommended BYO plan tier or higher to be eligible for an early termination charges/device payment contract waiver.

    • +1

I confirmed with chat that you must have received an email offer and be able to provide a copy to honour the device payment waiver if you have more than 6months remaining on your contract

  • +1

Can anybody confirm how this "invitation" to swap arrives? via email to targeted customers?

    • Yes, can someone provide some details on what the invitation was? Email? Post?…

  • It not targeted. Just jump on the chat 24/7 and quote that link

  • Thanks. My existing contract shows I can "re-contract" if I pay out the device. Always has. So when the offer showed the "early termination/device payment waiver" it caught my attention. Less so if I have to pay out the device.

  • Confirmed to also work with the 10gb for $60 plan. Awesome find, thanks OP!!

  • I'm on the 45/month S5 plan from last year. I ended up getting the cashrewards cashback for that plus selling the phone.

This upgrade for $5 extra for +3GB pm could be a cherry on top :)

How does the bonus $100 credit work?

  • I would maybe hold out on this, as they had the $60 for 10 gig deal. Im sure $50 for at least 7.5gig will be on offer before to long. they have to remain competitive.

  • OK tried it and got:

Winning! Your order has been sent

Your order will take 3-7 days to process.

Once complete, you'lll receive a confirmation SMS and email from us and you can start enjoying your new data allowance immediately.

If you're waiting for a new phone, we can keep you up to date on the release date and pricing by tapping the button below.

Hopefully I'm eligible. A Telstra agent screwed my order up last year when they offered $45/7Gb for XMas and I got put on $55/4Gb instead and no amount of pleading with agent or Telstra ever fixed that so I'm still pretty peed off with Telstra and their agents…..

  • Sorry, quick question.

If I take this up, will I be recontracting?

    • Yes, for 12 months. But you can move to a new phone plan with Telstra within that period.

  • I got a call about this deal last week and signed up. Maybe it was targeted as im on iPhone 6.

Lost my iTunes Apple Music access as a result of the change, which would have had another 10 months to go for free.

On the otherhand, OneDrive still has bonus storage.

  • Anyone have a copy of the email they received? PM me?

  • +1

Added clarification to the deal - it was provided as a link in My Account

  • Six month to the end of my contact and got upgraded to 20GB for $90 12 month contract great deal thanks

  • Just a heads up - despite being able to change plans via that link - the Device Repayments are not initially covered.

I specifically asked if all costs would be waived and was told yes they would.

My partner changed via this method (also confirming on live chat about outstanding costs), then I read about rye's issues above - on contacting live support they stated she would have to pay over $700 for the remaining device repayments!

They offered to let her make a payment plan, but it would still end up costing her more than her (now) old plan per month and if known she wouldn't have changed.

I contacted live chat and asked about my plan change (only had a few months left) and he reviewed my transcript and stated that since I was told there were no costs that we would both not have to pay any device repayment or contract fees.

I've saved this transcript and will be using it as proof when the new bill arrives.

4 hours of telstra chat tonight- not making much progress
When I logged into 24x7 app on phone got a link to $90 20gb offer. Basically paying $10 less than current contract to get 15gb more data than Im using.
Presently use 2.5-3.5gb/month buying extra on holidays minimal phone/text use.

Thanks to ozbargain Im now using my woolies $1 sim as 3gb data backup streamed to my phone when i start to run out

Best I got from chat is waive all fees and charges if i take $90 offer. Or can have $50 5gb or $60 10gb plan plus $10/month credit for staying connected.. $40/$50
but have to pay phone termination 4months to go of $222

Chat kept saying I haven't been sent an email….wait for email heaps being sent out. Maybe
reminiscent of the double broadband offer rollout mess-up?

Not sure what to do at the moment ..
especially in this Optus $50 15gb offer
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/259574

I see this telstra price near match…Just letting ppl know I contacted telstra to price match and they offered me 13gb of data and unlimited calls and text for $50 a month plus voided the amounted owing on my handset of roughly $70. V happy!!! Thanks again op!……

Plus other mention of recieving similar?

Anybody got links to discussion of this offer on whirlpool .. coundnt find anything

Seems I need to be put through to a retentions rep

    ….

    • talked to rep today - another hour of my life gone!!
changed 2 phones over to $60 plan with waiving of fees after reference to loyalty dept.

Wasn't able to get price match on optus 15gb offer - maybe I'm not pretty enough - loyal enough?

    • wow good effort - anyone else managed to get a price match?

    • Hey @jirvin_4505, I failed to get Telstra to match the plan. Spoke to 3 people and 4 LiveChats :(

Could you please PM me? Much much appreciated :D

  • I upgraded on Sunday after chatting to confirm I'd have no repayments even the I didn't get an offer. Got a $900 bill for phone today… 10min on Chat with transcript from Sunday's chat = device repayments waived thanks guys

    • Is there any chance you can PM me a copy of your transcript where a Telstra rep confirmed it? I've got the same issue as you however I didn't speak to a rep in advance.

Edit: Or more specifically just a screencap of their confirmation if you think it'd help me plead my case ;) Just to avoid any of your personal info.

      • How did you go thejoshy? I have some screen captures of the offer from mobile phone that I saved just in case. I got a bill for $500 handset repayments. A couple of minutes on 24/7 chat and all fees waived Didn't need screen captures I just said the conditions stated that all fees would be waived and received a revised bill an hour later.

Btw I never received an invite. Just followed link. Had 10 months left in 24 month contract.

        • That's interesting. I had an argument and stated the same. Got tired of dealing with a rude supervisor so I told her I'm leaving to Optus and refuse to pay a single cent to leave my contract other than my device repayment fee to cover what was owed on my phone.

Lodged a complaint because the woman was a cow and that horrified me as I'd never had rude staff, only useless staff - but this one was rude. I deal with the lovely people of society day in day out, so I was very nice to her as I know what it's like - and yet she still met me with rudeness.

Complaints case manager got back to me and said she'd waive half the device fees. I owe $400 and no longer in a contract and own a $1700 handset after only 11 months of paying my bill. I still came out a winner.

        • @TheJoshy:

That's a reasonable outcome then. So you still had 13 months left in your contract? That might explain their response.

        • @TightBottom: exactly! So can't complain now.

  • cool just signed up to the $60/10gb/month plan - got the ETC and device waived as confirmed through live chat (however, didnt save the transcript d'oh) but i only have 2 months left on my current $103/4.5gb/month plan. =) thanks OP

  • Just got a $90 20gb email. I have no use for 20gb though!

  • Thanks for this: It also works with the following:

    https://www.telstra.com.au/latest-offers/upgrade-plan-M-100 $50 for 5GB
    https://www.telstra.com.au/latest-offers/upgrade-plan-L-100 $60 for 10GB
    https://www.telstra.com.au/latest-offers/upgrade-plan-XL-100 $90 for 20GB

Tried recontracting via link but was not offered it as there was no note on my account, or that Im not important enough of a customer :/

    Hope this helps!
