Would you still qualify for the $20 discount bundle if you take up a sim only plan with Optus?

    • Yes - have been offered a $20 discount on broadband after signing up on a 12-month $40 10GB SIM only plan.

      • I've got broadband, then signed up for the same mobile plan that you're on, and I get $10 off my mobile plan.

Does this mean, when I renew my plan for broadband, they are giving me $20 off, and taking the $10 off offer, back from my mobile plan?

        A bit confused now.

      • I'm on the same plan at you, any chance you think we can upgrade to this one?

    • +2

I have the 50gb home wireless broadband month to month. In the online chat at first the guy said i need to have mobile service first, then add broadband only then i would be eligible for the $20 discount.

I asked him if he could go double check if i could do it the other way around. He came back and confirmed yes actually it would be eligible.

  • +7

Be careful of this if you travel on the train from Sydney to the Central Coast. I left Vodafone for Optus because of the data they offered but now find I can't get close to my monthly quota because reception is so poor.

    • +6

I find it a problem for both telstra and optus.

      • Same issue with Voda/Optus.

Train lines are terrible on any network

        • +5

I'd have to say though Voda worked way better than Optus for me, never thought that would be the case.

    • +1

Yeah this is one of reason why im considering to move from Optus to Telstra or Vodaphone :\

    • +1

      Hopefully this happens.

      http://www.itnews.com.au/news/turnbull-pledges-12m-to-mobile…

Has to be some silver lining for having these clowns in office

    • I find that on the bus from Sydney CBD to Warriewood (Northern Beaches) that Optus is marginally better than Vodafone for data. My estimate for this route would be Optus 85% coverage and Vodafone 82% coverage. I believe from a friend that Telstra is no better than Optus/Voda on this route, but haven't tried them myself.

  • +3

Damn Optus is bringing out some good deals, 15gb for $50 and charged in kb is amazinggggg, would definitely help with my Netflix issue that I currently have (keep going over with Telstra). I'm just worried that the reception/data usage will be shizzle and I'm in Melb metro.

I hope Telstra follow, but highly doubt it

    • +3

im in melbourne metro, and have no problems accessing internet usage anywhere (mainly in the south east and eastern suburbs) using optus now

      • I can second this

      • might have to look into it! I'm in northern suburbs so hopefully it's good, what about the city, no issues there either?

        • I'm living in North East. It's terrible from Heidelberg to Cliffton Hill. Although all of the networks are terrible. Vodafone is probably the worse. Telstra & Optus are about the same.

        • i havent had problems in the city..granted I dont head into the CBD much, eventhough I work in richmond (and optus is fine here)

      • We have issues about 20% of the time, though they say they're got some works going on. Works on the train except for the Hawthorn area.

    • I live in Blackburn and currently get between 15-20Mbps

  • Damn! Almost double what I currently get for the same price! Have an upvote!

Edit: Well I tried my luck, but they said specifically new customers only. Oh well… good for those not with Optus yet

    • +1

It says in the deal link that it's for new and recontracting customers, so if you're in the latter category you should be able to convince them.

      • Trust me I tried that angle. He kept saying "new customers only". Gonna try again later today and hope I get someone else.

        • That sucks… I was planning on trying that angle. Good luck and let us know how you go later :)

        • @meriyas: Shall do

        • +1

I suggest trying their Facebook/Twitter teams if you still have problems getting it. They have solved issues for me when the usual chat support cant, including applying the student discount.

        • @JordanM: I'll give it a go!

        • Tell them you will leave and rejoin!

        • @camelthief: I tried that too - no luck :( Waiting for the twits (twitter peeps) to get back to me

        • @camelthief:

Yeah i've done this a few times with Optus, transfer number to Vodaphone prepaid $10 for a few days and then transfer back to Optus on a sweet new deal for "new customers only"

        • When I called no one could do it ! Only option was for them to give me a new number. Was transferred 3 times and no one could get it done.

Online chat was a long wait but they done the recontract for my number with no problem !

        • @Skids andy: Do you have your online chat transcript? Or can you tell me who you talked to? They've being super cagey

        • @nytrojen:
Nah I didn't save it was in a hurry done it on my phone at work.

They changed the terms so I guess you can't do it unless you port your number then rejoin as a 'new' customer.

  • +5

Cannot wait to get off my telstra plan. Currently pay $108 a month for 3.5gb and go wayyyy over each month so pay upwards of $150. This looks like it could be the plan for me! Cheers OP

    • Buy a data pack???

      • +27

hand in your ozbargain badge, you are fired.

        • +4

$40 in excess data or $10 for a data pack

I know which one isn't the stupid choice

        • -3

          @sagiballs:

You are right, but the best solution is a new plan.

        • @sagiballs: you can't buy them, they are added on in 1gb increments for $10. And I go over by close to 5gb a month… Which is … Shit

        • @petermcram:

You can buy them. I get emails all the time about them. Some with double data promotions.

You can also go up a plan if you ask nicely

You could have also invoked the Telstra New Phone feeling to go to newer better value plans and upgrade your handset as well

… Just a thought. Since you are bleeding money unnecessarily

        • @sagiballs: upgrade with new phone feeling means another 2 year contract. No thank you. regardless of buying new data packs no one should be paying over $150 a month for a phone when deals like this one are around. Like I said earlier. Can't wait to get off this contract!

    • Cannot wait to get off my telstra plan. Currently pay $108 a month for 3.5gb

      huh?? :(

      • Yeah signed up 2 years ago now when the plans were exorpitant:( plan is up mid September so will BYO else where !

    • Sign up gor the BYO MX bundle $40/month for 5gb and $1000 worth of calls. They let me break my 12 month contract ($50/month 2.5gb data) 4 months into it as long as I agreed to a new 12month contract.

      Took 10 minutes on Telstra

      Link to deal
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/259464

      • My plans up on the 19 of September and I will then have my iPhone 6 outright. Love telstra but just too expensive compared to the competition. Best bet for me is to get a BYO plan with Circa 7-10gb data.

      • you could probably get 8gb if you tried again as that was offered to me when I spoke to disconnections via livechat.

    • I'm in the same boat as you but my plan expire in november. Paying over $100/month and only 2.5gb.

      • Wow I thought I had it bad! You going to change providers when your contracts up?

    • +2

Just letting ppl know I contacted telstra to price match and they offered me 13gb of data and unlimited calls and text for $50 a month plus voided the amounted owing on my handset of roughly $70. V happy!!! Thanks again op!

      • are you able to post a screenshot of the service summary? itll show the plan details and what you pay, im keen to upgrade to this :)

  • Does this include the free EPL for the year also? Sounds very tempting!

    • Should be. It's said free for any plan over $30/m

  • Should be eligible if you register before the 22nd of August according to the banner on their website (www.optus.com.au)

  • I'm on Optus. Find their network to be getting slower. Probably because of the new customers they're getting.

  • +1

Hmm I left Optus for the attractive 7GB Telstra deal.

Now I might have to go back as 15GB is enormous. Would only have to pay $60 to terminate my contract with Telstra. Most interesting.

    • how did you find out the termination fee?

  • Damn thta's a bargain. Has anyone tried to deal-match with Telstra or Voda?

    • -1

its not the good guys vs harvey norman

      • +44

Well, how wrong you were Tuzli.

I just negotiated $50 for 13GB on 12mnth plan with unlimited calls and text

Spoke to 24x7 Team member via LiveChat. They couldn't match it, but put me onto Retentions Team. I told them the plan details, sent them the link (but they can't view anything other than Telstra pages) and they gave me the best deal. I couldn't get the full 15GB out of them though. Good enough.

So while it may not be Good Guys vs Harvey Norman, it's most definitely Optus vs Telstra.

        • +2

          A true OZ bargainer!!

        • +1

Damn that is a sweet deal! I'm going to try later to upgrade to that deal too!

When you say you sent them the link, was that to this page? Or the actual SIS link that OP posted?

        • @eltito:

I sent them the Optus link in this deal.

        • +1

Thank you. Got the same deal directly through LiveChat. They even didn't ask for the link. It does not come with international call, but it's not a big issue for me. Telstra also waived the rest 3 month cancellation fee.

        • +1

@go2home: I've just confirmed with LiveChat that'll we'll also receive 6 Months Apple Music too https://www.telstra.com.au/applemusic This is despite the fact I've had it before on my previous plan. So it's not just new customers. So that's a $72 bonus.

        • -2

          @captain smash:
How have you managed to get Telstra to match the deal?

        • -3

@RJE91: What part of my post above didn't make sense? It's pretty straight forward if you can read.

        • -1

          @captain smash:
Nevermind if your attitude is that poor, I only asked as the Telstra rep said that they don't match other policies.

        • they can be so frustrating with things like this. I tried yesterday and they wouldn't give me any sort of discount or bonus to come close to the optus deals. My dad has been a telstra customer of some sort (internet, home phone or mobile) for 30+ years. They mentioned this in the chat, and yet the only thing they offered was a $10 discount on the galaxy s7 edge $105 plan, which is still far more expensive than elsewhere.

        • +1

@RJE91: You obviously weren't speaking to a retentions team member.

        • @captain smash: How do you speak to a retentions team member? Do you have to get referred to one on live chat?

        • @Alcoano: Yes, they referred me to one in the LiveChat - it was via link which opened a new chat window.

        • @captain smash: And sorry if its obvious, but are you already with Telstra if they referred you to a retentions team member?

        • +2

I also can safely admit that I negotiated with Vodafone a few months ago to go on a $35/month on a 24 month contract with 13 gb of data and unlimited calls within Aus and unlimited calls to 10 countries! with the $5 roaming.

I guess it comes down to how you negotiate with them. FYI before anyone asks, it was a $45/month plan with a $10 loyalty credit and 1gb additional data to go with the actual 12gb.

I dont mind the contract at that price for 24 months and I get to retain it on a month to month after that.

        • @Alcoano: Yes I am a Telstra customer who was currently off plan.

        • $50 for 13GB is really attractive! I am a big data user.

        • @garylau: I highly doubt they'll let you switch down if you've still got 4 months to run. They've sort of got you by the balls and you don't have the 'i'll leave' leverage yet - they've got you on the hook for 4 x $80 + a contract break fee.

        • +14

@captain smash: Captain smash you are the best! I spoke to retention and the lady was super nice, she offered 10gb (with addtitional 3gb as extra, so total 13gb) for $40 a month on 12 month contract! I was happy to go ahead but she was having issues adding it on, so she told me she would call me once it was done. About 20 minutes later she called and said she got me 14gb instead of 13gb (I am assuming because she couldn't do 13gb for some reason and had to do 14gb). I was super stoked, all that for $40 a month! Netflix here I comeeee!!

Edit: For anyone who is wondering I was previously on $50 month to month plan with 5gb data

        • +1

@eltito: well done! Thats an awesome deal

        • +1

@Heizenberg: Thanks! I was surprised she offered it at $40, I told them that I had someone who had gone through this process earlier and was offered an amazing deal but didn't give the specifics, and when she offered $40 I jumped on board ASAP

        • @eltito: strangely I just got a text message confirming my plan change and I too have been upgraded to 14GB a month, but at $50 not $40. Good work!.

        • @eltito: Is this for the M or L byo plan?

        • @eltito: Can you go into your 24x7 Telstra App, Select your mobile and do 'manage your add ons' Apple Music should be there. Mine just gave me 12 months, not 6 months free….

        • @cheapsk8t: So the plan she put me on was Go Mobile BYO Plan $70 (I can't remember what plan I was on previously sorry, but it was month to month with 5gb data I had that plan for about a year or so), with $30 discount so coming down to $40 and 14gb

Edit: I just checked my previous plan, it was actually the same plan Go Mobile BYO Plan $70, but I had a $10 loyalty discount which was applied about 6 months ago, as I was going to head to prepaid Telstra.

So essentially I've always had the same plan, but with higher discount and data now.

        • @captain smash: I haven't activated mine yet, but it says 6 months free offer period. Once I activate it, where do I go to check to see if it has giving me 6 or 12 months?

Also, sorry for the newbie question, but I never took the offer up previously for apple music, so once I activate it, can I cancel straight away, so it gives me the free period and doesn't automatically roll me on auto billing? Or do I have to do it at the end of the free period?

        • @eltito:

It'll tell you in the app before you activate it. When you activate it - you receive a pin code - it will again tell you what you've got. I'm assuming $40 = 6 mnths and $50+ = 12. It will warn you as you approach the end that you'll be renewing and will automatically bill your iTunes account month to month

        • @captain smash: ah thanks! I'll do it when I finish work tonight, if it gives me 12 months I'll let you know.

When you say it warns you, how does that occur? Sms? or through the app? or another app?

        • @eltito: you'll get an email to your associated Apple ID email / iTunes Store email

        • SO to get that telstra deal, you would have to be an existing telstra user i assume? given only retention team can offer this deal.

        • +1

@scheps: Correct. There's been no evidence a new customer can get it.

        • +1

13GB, $50, Apple Music. Signed, sealed and delivered.

          Thank you Captain.

        • +1

@miguelsanchez: Good stuff. Also, For some reason I ended up getting 14GB when I got my Plan Confirmation TXT message. I'm wondering if it's because I had a second SIM attached to my account.

        • Just spoke to Telstra's retention team, he said he's never heard of such a plan, even after consulting his supervisor. Guess i'll have to try again another time.

        • +1

@General Seal: it's not a plan, it's a negotiation to get them to match the offer you have from Optus

        • +1

I got recontracted to 13.5 GB on $50 with Telstra now because of you! Thank you very much man!!

For those with Telstra: you need to speak to the customer retention team. I still had 2 months to go on my BYO 50 (7GB per month) and she was nice enough to waive the $68 fees

        • @Viderzo: thx dude :)

        • Didn't have much luck with this approach on Live Chat - got into a messy argument about device payout fees and wouldn't go near your great deal - guess it depends who you get - perhaps better off trying through daylight hours

        • +1

I just got the same deal from Telstra, for me and my wife.

Had to argue a bit with the initial chat, asked to be put through to retentions at least twice. They had lots of marketing cut'n-pastes they were using. I said the networks are like for like, so it comes down to price. They put me through.

Deal - $50 per month, 12 month contract, 13GB data per month, reverts to monthly after contract end, same terms.

          Nice one!

        • @warwickjames:

No luck for me. Try chatting with Live Chat. Can't do the deal then referred to another team. Soon got a call from them. Didn't offer me any good deal, only ask me to wait to contract finish and go in a Team plan SIM. How to get hold of retention team? The Live chat said that person called me was from there.

        • +3

spoke to retentions and $50 for 13GB on 12mnth plan with unlimited calls and text + $30 international connect pack
