    • Kids love them!!! A little too much ;p

  • Can anyone recommend a recessed light fitting so that the bulb is flush with the roof like a downlight?

    • You might be better off looking at BR30 fixtures.

  • Are the new model also on special?

    • +1

This 50% if only for the LIFX Original bulbs. If you buy two or more of the new Color 1000 bulbs you will get a multipack discount.

  • +1

I am very tempted by this. I was looking at getting one of the Xiaomi Yeelight but they are only 600 lumens for a few dollars less. I have just bought one.

    • +1

Get one (or two) to play with them. You won't regret it. They're awesome to have. Only drawback is that there's no 'out of the box' way to automate them based on triggering a switch or proximity, etc.

      • I am interested in using colored light in my room to read to, as well as using it as a wake up light on a timer.

        • +1

I use them for that too. In the bedroom I set it to the lowest K light (since high K blue light keeps you awake). Also dim it for reading. In the morning I've set it to wake me up before the alarm, and it totally works.

Sometimes I turn all of them in the house at the same time with trippy colors. It's like color theraphy to brighten the mood.

        • @cnut: Have you gone the other way for the walke up light side of things and set it to a very high blue light to stimulate serotonin ? That should, in theory, wake you up quicker.

        • +1

@leftspeaker2000: Yep it's set to higher K when I wake up from memory. You can pick a color or temperature from the schedule settings.

Can I ask a noob question, I don't have these at home. Can I use these to switch on my lights remotely via 4G away from home? Also if say the light switch is off, so the bulb has no power and isn't connected to the wifi, does the app show the bulb in a offline/online type status?

    • +1

      1) These need to be on all the time at the switch. Won't work otherwise. It'll show as being offline since they're not powered at all.
      2) They draw relatively minimal power even when the switch is always on. 1.7W which at 20c/kWh is about $3 a year on standby.
      3) They work over 4G, so you can control your lights remotely.
      4) When you're away, you can automatically set them to turn on at 6pm for instance to deter thieves.

      • How does one control them over 4G?

When I'm away from home the option to control the lights doesn't come up on the app..

        • Hmmmmm works for me. Need to create an account from memory.

        • @cnut: Have you linked through the cloud or directly through the app on your phone/tablet?

        • @cristobaljames: I'm doing it directly via the app. I did sign into the app.

  • +1

and i just bought 4. thanks OP!

  • How long is this deal going to last for? I ordered 1 and would like to test it out before buying a few more since they're not cheap.

    • Seems to me like international stock is all gone and this is all that's left. So probably not that long. These are the older models, so whatever stock is left is it. You can grab two as they still fetch a decent price on eBay.

  • It does look like these are easy to hack according to http://www.contextis.com/resources/blog/hacking-internet-con… and may pose a security risk to your wifi network and your personal details.

    • +1

      On that page

      "VENDOR FIX

Context informed LIFX of our research findings, who were proactive in their response. Context have since worked with LIFX to help them provide a fix this specific issue, along with other further security improvements. The fix, which is included in the new firmware available at http://updates.lifx.co/, now encrypts all 6LoWPAN traffic, using an encryption key derived from the WiFi credentials, and includes functionality for secure on-boarding of new bulbs on to the network."

      • Yes, firmware fixes were made back in 2014 to address this. Wow time flies, that doesn't seem that long ago.

    • The hacker would need to be within WiFi range. Yeah it's possible, but highly unlikely for most people.

  • +1

Thanks, picked one up. Now my room is going to be lit…

  • XIaomi's bulbs are $22 do you recommend them

    • Looks like they are only 600 lumens. The LIFX Original is 1000. So you will need more of them to get the same brightness.

Also unsure if they work with other companies like Nest, IFTTT, Logitech. We work closely with these companies to make sure we play well together. Checkout: http://www.lifx.com/pages/connects-with-lifx

    • They and other Chinese brands have issues with insurance etc if they burn your house down as not compliant with Australian standards.
Is LIFX better in this regard?

      • +1

LIFX do undergo rigorous testing and certifications. LIFX CE, FCC are c-tick compliant which is the standard for Australia.

  • What do these offer that a normal bulb doesn't?

    • +1

With LIFX you have complete control over the colour temperature and brightness via the LIFX App. Warm to Cool Whites or 16 Million Colours. You can remotely control your lights when you are away to make it look like someone is home. You can connect them to other smart devices like a Nest Smoke Alarm to flash red when smoke is detected or use your Logitech harmony remote to dim your lights when watching a movie. Create a wake up alarm to have your lights gentle fade on like a sunrise or just have fun with the music visualiser which changes the lights to the beat of your music. The options are endless.

      • What app do i need to utilize the music visualizer settings? Very interested in this

        • The LIFX App. It can now also work in the background so you don't need to have it open.

        • @kavalier27:

How many do i need to start my own Stereosonic?

        • +1

          @TightAssDrake: you'll need a six pack of course ;p

  • So if I leave these on at the switch, but off with the app, and the kids walk into the room and want to turn on at the switch, will switching it off and on again turn on the light at 100% (or some other programmable amount)?

    • +1

Yes the bulbs will go back to the default setting which is a soft white.

      • Thanks. Are you able to change that default (colour, brightness level, or even to stay off when its powered)?

        • +2

Assuming they work the same as the newer models - a single off / on toggle would turn them on at their last state (colour / brightness) - where a double (off / on / off / on) would reset them to full brightness.

  • Is there any difference between the NZ and Australia options? and is GST included?

    • No difference, it just helps make it clear to customers outside AU/NZ that they are not available to purchase.

      • How about GST?

        • No GST payable. LIFX is run out of California

  • +1

Damn… it made me buy one! That video ad is convincing!! hahahaha

  • +1

Backed for two of these on the original Kickstarter project. While I had initial issues with what happened there (including the bulbs arriving for sale in Harvey Norman before any backers got theirs), I can't fault the hardware.. and the software eventually got to top class, too. My original bulbs still work, but at this price I'll be picking up a spare.

If you've got a Flic or little bluetooth button, see if you can get it running with IFTTT and/or LIFX Cloud. I've got a Flic set up to toggle, fade over 2 mins and set default colours for each bulb. If you're a coder the documentation and API is pretty good now for tinkering with your own things too.

  • do they have programming or memory of sorts so that for example if you had them programmed to dim down over 20 minutes and your phone froze they would still dim and if nothing is talking to them and you switch back on will they remember last colour and brightness?

    • Yes, for a preset schedule or alarm the function is controlled in the cloud so as long as you bulb is connected your phone doesn't need to be on or even in the house.

Some parts are controlled locally on the bulb like the white reset (turning the bulb off and on to go back to white) but schedules are cloud based.

      • wow! I'd already ordered so thats excellent to hear :)

I'd want the schedules to work no matter what smart devices in the house are up to - I have an illness which induces photophobia and insomnia so these could be very useful with amber light at sunset and blue hues to assist waking gentle

        • +1

Ah yes they will be great for this. Lot's of people are using them for this. Let us know how you go with them. Always nice to understand the benefits people can have with them.

  • +1

    Got one! Thanks

    • Awesome! Enjoy :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Isgdt07nB3o quick review. nice and tidy.

  • Hey Rep - can you consider a sale or alternate route to get the GU10 down-lights. I want quite a few but Harvey Norman for some bizarre reason has an exclusive on them as I understand it and I can't even buy them from you directly.

    • Yeah we don't make the Original GU10 anymore. We trailed it for the kick starter campaign but didn't continue mass production of them.

As we expand into Europe and Australia we will be looking to add this to our product lineup. Stay tuned.

      • +2

        interested in downlights too.

      • +1

Will buy your product once a GU10 downlight variant is available.

        • keep an eye out end of year/early 2017

  • $60 for a bulb? Holy sheep what does it do have sex with you or something o.O

    • +23

We are not in a position to confirm future product functionality at this time.

      • Lol ill +1 that. But seriously never heard your item Nd at work so no time to research, whats the bulb do thats worth that much money.

        • Check out our video as it sums it up better than I can type ;p https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQkdQlXOBGU

        • +1

i started off as sceptical as you, but after watching a few reviews, it really is worth the price hey, the functionality in the video kavalier27 links is backed up by heaps of other reviewers ;)

        • @yupyup: well just wait for the review on the new function series ;)

  • I dunno why but I just bought it.

    • +1

      haha you'll love it!

      • I'm now considering getting more seeing that this sale has not ended.
Could I know what are the main differences between these and LIFX Color 1000.

        • +1

The Original are slightly bigger in size and use a little more power, 17W at 100% brightness vs 11W.

Both bulbs to all the same functions once you update the firmware.

If you have small lamps go for the Color 1000, if you are screwing into larger pendants or ceiling mounts the Originals will work fine.

        • +1

@kavalier27: Sweet. I got my 4 LEDs today. One of the areas I found the bulb to be too large for the ceiling lamp flush mount but somehow managed. Love it. Thanks! I am now considering buying 6 more.

        • @vchan: Nice one :) Still some left…

  • Just bought two, not sure why. Anyone recommend a cool desk lamp that these could be fitted into?

  • +1

Got two of these and I love them. It's great having everything turn on when I get home.

    • Can you recommend any ceiling ones?

  • a little bit over budget

  • +1

I already have 6 (3 originals, and 3 of the newer version).

    Just bought another 2!

  • -1

wtf LIFX ???? just got an email asking me to email photo id.
sorry but no way, not happening.
how the hell would photo id help confirm my identity anyway unless you already know what i look like ?
sounds very suspect to me :/

    • Might be a fraud check based on your IP. Seems like your IP address has a flag against it. Just email Matt back and he will help approve it.

      • +1

ahh OK….. using a vpn when i placed the order. usually i pretend to be in canada but today i opted for russia which obviously raised a red flag (pun intended :P)

        • Lol yeah that will do it. We would normally just cancel your order. Our entire office started strobing when you placed it. Matt will help you out, all good.

  • +1

Hey this looks really cool! Is it possible to use Tasker (on Android) to automate some features? I was thinking something like, when i connect to home wifi, my phone instructs these lights to switch on. Or maybe using NFC chips to do certain things.

  • +1

Good deal! Unfortunately my whole ecosystem is on the Philips Hue which seems to have longer life expectancy hours and you can buy wall switches with dimmers built in. But those looking for a cheap way to get into home automation, this deal is perfect.

    • Fair enough. Always hard to change once all setup.

    • actually according to the Just in Tech video I watched Lifx claims 35000 hours, Hue only 15000 hrs

  • Like to grab one of these to use in an uplight, for scheduled use as well as being able to dim automatically when playing something on Kodi (and brightening on pause or stop) which I'm guessing it would be perfect for with a bit of tinkering.

Only problem is the length of the original means it will stick out the top, probably not look so good. Only grey being available in the E27 means it would be even more noticeable.

Bummer.. might just have to wait for a discount on the new ones, or get a white only..

How long till the fun of changing colour wears off? :)

    • Most people do end up using the whites more. It is nice to be able to add some colour every now and them though for watching a movie or having a party etc… Also weather notifications and smoke alarm integrations etc.. are much better in colour.

  • +1

So tempted so I got one to play around. LoL

    • You'll have fun with them!

  • +1

Bought three. Hopefully can make life that little better. Regarding length - 135mm doesn't look that long to me. Workable. Led globes I'm currently using are 115mm.

  • Just wanted to say that these lights are great, and the customer service top notch from my experience.

My current house has Bayonet fittings, but will be moving shortly.

Would appreciate some advice on whether to buy bayonets or screw styles? Is it easy to buy and use an adapter to convert one style to the other? Is using a converter a viable option?

    Thanks!

    • +2

eBay does sell adapters for B22 to E27 and vise versa. Both add a bit more length to the bulb.

From the adapters I can see in the office here the B22 to E27 are smaller so you are better off buying a bayonet.

    • +2

B22 bayonet is way more common is Australia

    • +1

Are you moving within Australia? Then B22 Bayonet.
