      Thanks PJC. Added.

      • +1

        Thank you.

  • Thanks Op :)

I bought four a few months ago directly from Lifx and can't recommend them enough! Shipped from HK but because it was DHL, it only took a few days to arrive :)

One got corrupted during a firmware upgrade but the support team promptly sent me a replacement. Some advice: update the firmware using a computer. (To be fair, the iOS app has been updated several times since I stuffed up a bulb so updating from your phone could be OK now.)

    • +1

Thanks for the feedback. Agree the computer firmware updater is quicker and more reliable especially for these generation 1 bulbs. For those wanting to use it, you can download it here for Mac, Windows or Linux: http://www.lifx.com/pages/updates

      • My two arrived yesterday. Little bit of frustration trying to get them onboarded with my Netgear D7000, then I updated one-at-a-time via the Windows firmware updater. Both stalled at 99.99%, but after a power cycle and re-update they came good.

Now they're set up, they're fantastic. Just ordered another two.

        • Nice trouble shooting. So many routers, so many possible issues.

  • +4

Also, all these units will ship from our Sydney warehouse so should only take a few days to ship.

    • probably should have checked before ordering, are auspost parcel lockers ok to deliver to ? :)

      • +1

Yep all good. We ship via Australia post locally.

    • I just got another two (seriously, you guys need to stop letting me purchase these, it's making me go broke!) but I'm just wondering: Is this brand new stock? It's not returned stuff from previous customers that are refurbs or anything, right?

      • +1

Brand new. We don't sell any returned or refurbished stock.

        • +2

Sweet. I have 6 now. The only thing is I wish there was a system like the Samsung SmartThings that would let me automate the lights. Having to always use my phone gets a bit tedious.

Is there a good way to set this up to automate things a bit? Like if I walk into a room? IFTTT is laggy apparently even if you use a sensor somehow.

        • Got any cheap refurbished stock then?

        • @ATangk: Not currently.

        • +2

@cnut: I now have 9 of these from the last sale. It opened a world of Home automation, presence detection, z-wave etc.

I can recommend looking into Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi if you feel like tinkering. Smart Things isn't out in Australia yet.

        • +1

@t3chshopper: Sweet, cheers. I'll look into it. That's so far the only drawback - having to keep using the phone. I was going to at least superglue one on the wall to always have a panel to use.

On the bright side, sometimes I get lazy and don't bother turning the lights on. So I save electricity. Haha.

        • +3

@cnut: I may or may not have an old iphone stuck to the wall ;p

        • +2

          @cnut:

I am using some motion detectors (D-Link and Belkin Wemo) to trigger the LIFXs via IFTTT, works pretty well with a second or two delay most of the time. No phones and they switch on automagically!

        • @cnut: You might be able to do some stuff with Tasker and NFC tags if you're on Android.

There are also these tiny little physical clicker buttons that could be carried in a pocket or even clipped to a lapel https://flic.io/ - currently 20% off with code SCHOOLFLIC which I have been thinking of getting for other uses. Can be programed with single double and triple clicks. Might be good instead of a phone stuck to the wall. (I've got a couple of old Nexus 7's stuck up with double sided velcro dots)

        • @BaryGusey: That's awesome. Lots of good ideas here.

I assume these bulbs have an API we can use? If so is there a way to get a Pi and write custom code for some switches like Flic to do it in real time (not rely on IFTTT so there's less lag)?

        • @cnut: I have 2 lifx bulbs and agree with your experience. The lack of a physical switch means that these tend to be turned off at the power limiting my ability to control these. Lag and the unreliability of ifttt is a problem. Buy it but accept that the WAF (wife acceptance factor) is likely going to be very low after the novelty of colours wear off. Going to the switch to turn power on then opening the app on my phone to control it gets very tedious. These bulbs produce beautiful colours however.

I also have 3 wemo physical light switches and love them. I use them only for outdoor lights and the automation capability is rock solid. They communicate with my wemo makers that control my front gate and garage door so when these open after sunset all exterior lights come on for a set duration of 5 minutes and works consistently everytime.

        • +1

@cnut: I think so but I don't know that it's easily accessible from the little I've read. I'm just using IFTTT for my simple needs and testing.

I've got some cheaper bulbs from http://www.limitlessled.com/ that I've been using for a while now and only got the LIFX to test from the last deal. The limitlessLED version uses a bridge and the timing of on/off signals can be a bit hit and miss, you send a UDP command to the bridge which then sends it on to the bulb. I like these LIFX ones not having a bridge and being easily cloud triggerable but they are also much more expensive and the original ones I have don't fit inside my light fittings.

Was also considering getting an Amazon Alexa thing but I'm holding out for the google version due soon. Using tasker I have my LimitlessLEDs voice activated so I reckon you could do that with LIFX.

Hey @kavalier27: - what are the chances of getting some tasker integration built into your app?

        • @t3chshopper: thanks for advising on Home Assistant to overcome the lag with IFTTT. Will be a weekend project to add it to a VM on my home server. Maybe WAF will improve if I'm successful.

        • +3

          @cnut:

Have you tried using Amazon Echo with LIFX setup? It's freaking awesome. Wifi controlled lights isn't actually easy to use at all - you need to find a phone/tablet, open the app, then tap. But voice control from anywhere in the room is a true convenience feature.

        • +3

@systema: I also use the D-Link. It works but a bit of a delay.
For a bit of fun and using IFTTT, a D-Link motion sensor I programmed the lights to flash red and at the same time to play a voice recorded message (go to bed)through a Bluetooth connected speaker in the lounge. It scares the shit out of the kids.

        • @Jinster: Nope. I'd love one though! Did see Google Home so maybe that's similar and good too.

        • @Jinster: does the Amazon echo have a LIFX skill or are you using IFTTT for integration?

        • @Vietsoldier: It has a lifx skill. Pretty much fully controllable using Alexa.

        • +1

Just bought a Logitech Pop starter kit for US$99 and a small shipping fee from Amazon. It has US style plug for the bridge (hopefully it is 240 volt capable as LIFX staff use one in Australia). It only has 2 switches included, but apparently being wifi instead of bluetooth it's better than Flic.

  • Awesome thanks!!

  • +2

If only Apple wasn't so restrictive with HomeKit, these could integrate it and be brilliant :(

    • It looks like new HomeKit compatible model is coming.
The following answer was updated 13 hours ago.
      https://support.lifx.com/hc/en-us/articles/202248504-Will-LI…

      • Ah. Still, that requires a new hardware model, as Apple requires an Apple chip in every HomeKit device. These will never be compatible with HomeKit unless Apple eases their ridiculous restrictions (lol) or you use a complicated bridge on a raspberry pi or something.

      • Good news. Might consider them once thats in place instead of the Philips Hue I was planning on.

MATE CAN THESE BE USED WITH A DIMMER SWITCH?

    • +4
    • +1

Yep that link will answer it. You should be able to set the dimmer to 100% and then use the App to dim.

      • +6

Thanks bdl and kavalier27 for shedding some light on that. I'm rather dim at times, I don't see things even if they're glaringly obvious.

These are really amazing bulbs but they are HUGE and won't fit many fittings. I bought 4 but only use one in a lamp. The others didn't fit :S

    • Yeah they are A21 size which is pretty heafty. They do work of in normal roof and pedant lights but can be too big for some smaller table lamps etc.. The new Color 1000 are A19 size so are better for smaller lamps.

      • +12

        "pedant lights"

Should be popular with JV then.

    • +1

Here is an image of the two (new and old) to compare sizes - surprisingly hard to find an image online that does this. I would not say the new globes are tiny either.

      https://instagram.fper2-1.fna.fbcdn.net/t51.2885-15/e35/1293…

Bought 4 Bayonett style ones from the kickstarter way back when. By the time I received them I had moved house and the entire place is ceiling down lights - except two in the kitchen which I bought the newer Lifx screw globes for.

Years later still trying to figure what to do with the Bayonets - can't get a lamp with that fitting.

  • +1

    came to say great bulb!

  • I tried looking, but couldn't find: how many lumens can these bulbs emit? ..or is that not relevant?

EDIT: found it, 1017 lumens https://support.lifx.com/hc/en-us/articles/200064629-LIFX-Pr…

  • I know these aren't compatible with HomeKit and never will be thanks to Apple, but are these fully compatible with the LifX iPhone app and Apple Watch apps? The app doesn't list compatibility.

    • Yes, the LIFX bulbs are compatible with the LIFX apps

  • Will these stick out of the normal roof sockets?

    • Yes as long as you have E27 Screw or B22 Bayonet fitting. Most Australian homes have these two fittings or downlights.

      • +1

yeah I have e27 and b22 fittings, i was wondering if they were massive and jut out of the light bulb cutting?.

Ill be ordering 4 to try em out.

        Thanks OP

  • +1

awesome :) got two on the last sale and bought another one on this one. Thanks!

  • +1

Very happy customers here from previous deal on original LIFX. Works very well with ITTT.

Be ware it is a very long unit, not suitable for all fittings/lamps.

    • +4

      that's what she said

      • +2

Yeah, but it's LED so at least they'll last for ages!

  • +1

I bought two last time a deal was on. Only complaint I have is switching them on from the wall switch takes a second or so to react, as opposed to the instant light from a conventional lightbulb. Otherwise great bulb.

Mine shipped from Hong Kong via dhl which only took a few days. Funnily enough these ship from sydney via auspost so i'm sure it'll be slower to get to me in Perth :)

Oo another thing. Updating the firmware is a horrendous experience. But according to other comments ive realised there is an update utility on their website. So use that instead of their apps.

    • Agree, firmware updates are a pain the first time on the Original Bulbs. Once you have upgraded from the base firmware (which can take up to 30 minutes), all future updated should only take 60 seconds or so.

  • +1

Might be a stupid question but if I have one installed and I keep the light switch on at all times but turn the light off through the app, will it be using no power at all during that time it is off?

    • +1

It will be using standby power in order to maintain it's connection with the cloud.

    • +1

Yes, someone posted this link in the last deal with the standby power consumption: https://support.lifx.com/hc/en-us/articles/202298574-How-muc…

      • +1

At 1.7W, based on 24/7 over a year and 20c per kWh, it's about $3 per year on standby for anyone wondering.

        • -1

I was just working that out too and for 1 bulb sitting on standby for the entire year, I calculated the cost would be 30 cents.

          1.7W per hour * 24 Hours * 365 Days = 14,892W = roughly 1.5kw/h x 20c = 30c

        • +2

          @Master Baiter: The calculation is:

          kWh/year = 1.7W x 24 / 1000 W/kW * 365 = 14.892 kWh per year (0.0408 per day).

At 20c per kWh that's $2.90 odd per year.

EDIT: Found this which works it out for us: http://www.rapidtables.com/calc/electric/electricity-calcula…

        • +1

@cnut: Nice, thanks for clarifying. I see the error in my maths; 15kWh not 1.5kWh!

        • @Master Baiter: Either way, it's relatively cheap! Even with 6 now that's under $20 a year. Not exactly cheap, but for the cool stuff you can do it's worth it. Plus you can always turn them off at the power if you don't use them regularly.

    • +2

It will be using a small amount of power, as it is connected to your WiFi network to allow control by the app. ~1.7W according to LIFX, which is actually a lot considering the consumption of LED's when on!
      https://support.lifx.com/hc/en-us/articles/202298574-How-muc…

      Edit: beaten above!

    • +2

It will still be using power (to keep connection to wifi, and wait for a possible response), however, this will be less power drain then if left on 24/7

    • +1

Thanks for the responses everyone! Grabbing one to try!

  • +2

Been happy with mine. Great alternate to Hues with no bridge required. App even works on Android Nougat.

  • What is the difference between the original one and the newer versions?

    • +2

The new version are a little smaller in size so fit in more lamp styles and a little more energy efficient 11W vs 17W at maximum brightness. Both support the same functionality and connections with other devices etc… The new model only comes in the pearl white finish.

      • Great thanks! Any additional discount if we buy 6 or more? :) might be cheaper for you to ship?

        • +3

This is as low as I could go. But yes please buy 6 or more. ;p

        • @kavalier27: oh cmon additional 10% if we buy 6 or more…? ;) Then i will buy!

        • +1

          @kavalier27: just bought 6!

  • I tried a program called Maxlifx, which makes the globes react to your computer screen which is great for Games, and i suppose would work nice for movies. It is how ever a bit confusing and it would be awesome if Lifx them selves made a version.

    • +3

will pass this on to the engineering team cheers

      • Hi mate, how many of these do you have in stock left?

  • very good customer service, both of my bulbs that I bought last time seemed to be duds (very unreliable in terms of being controlled by the app as they kept randomly disconnecting). Talked to support and followed their solutions, since that didn't work out, they promptly sent a replacement and informed me that they don't have originals so are sending the new color variant :D WIN :D

    • Mine don't seem to like being switched off with a Harmony Hub - they turn on fine but won't respond to the off command using the remote.

The Harmony app, and LIFX app are fine. So I make ask support too!

      • I can't even see the option in Harmony to add LIFX. It only has Philips Hue.

        • +1

Ah Ha my Harmony & hub needed a software update.

  • +7

Bought 4 of these a few months ago and so far they've been close to flawless. My crib looks totally pimpin' now. The ladies absolutely love them get nausea when I turn them on and never come back to my place again.

Still, I'd definitely buy a few more.

These sound awesome, but do I really need to spend $40 when I already have a perfectly functional light globe in my room? Hmm..

    • +4

Yes. I have 4 already and ordered 2 more. #noragrets

  • +1

Bought a bunch of these earlier this year during the last promo. Bloody brilliant having the one in the kids room scheduled to turn on and fade up to a certain brightness each morning.

And the novelty of the various flickers hasn't worn off yet.
