The 20% discount on the Qantas Points required is for eligible flights booked between 12.01am (AEST) 24 August 2016 and 11.59pm (AEST) 27 August 2016 for travel between 27 September 2016 and 12 August 2017 on Qantas and for travel between 27 September 2016 and 30 June 2017 on Jetstar. For example, if an itinerary included an eligible Classic Flight Reward flight between Sydney and London Heathrow with a Transfer flight to Brussels, this Trip would not be eligible to receive the discount. Good work! Looks like my next three days will be wasted scheming.

    • +3

How much of that will be on work time? 😂

      • What job do you have where you can just browse the internet?

        • I run my own company.

  • Thanks for finding this and posting !

  • +2

great find !!! damn, i booked on the weekend already :(

    • Wow. Why did someone neg you for saying that? Weird..

    • Me too! Just missed out, dammit.

    • grrr. I know the feeling. Just made a booking last week!

  • Time to stock up ff points from ozbargain classifieds. Point is how to not get banned.

    • +1

with taxes considered it's not a great use of points for economy bookings given that flights often go on sale.

    • +6

Unless you just required a top up to get you over the line it doesn't offer that great of value. Take Sydney to L.A return. You can Purchase the 72k points for $720 and then you pay $500 taxes so you will pay $1220 in points value and taxes combined. Or you could purchase from a Qantas sale for $1050 last week.

    • Sometimes I find flights are still on a lower fare for points redemption, but on sale in a higher fare category retail, so in those cases it works to use the points also

  • Dangit! Just booked a flight last week!

    Great find OP!

    • +1

Read your own comment, and then reassess your point.

It's for domestic + international + trans Tasman.

    • +3

Australia is international to itself. Consider Hurstville. It's basically its own country.

    • It does sound like only for international. "International destinations to and from Australia" could mean the flight there and return, to Australia would be the return flight from NYC and from Australia could be the flight from SYD to NYC.

      • +1

Yep a little confusing, but purely domestic flights are definitely eligible, I booked a couple earlier today.

  • +2

As always, it's a shame to see this restricted to economy only. International economy award bookings on QF metal don't usually represent good value when taxes are thrown in.

    • Is it worth spending points on domestic economy?

      • +2

Best to use on business, but at least the taxes on domestic economy are not inflated like intl.

      • +4

Domestic economy is not too bad but you should compare it to how much you'd be paying in cash for it. Also depends in how much you value your points.

        e.g. SYD-MEL 8000pts +~$32 tax
If you value that at 1c/pt then you're "paying" the equivalent of ~$115 in cash for it. If you can't find a cash fare that's $115 or cheaper than it's worth considering your points.

Personally don't find it worth spending it on business especially domestically because I don't find it worth the extra points for a short flight. My goal on a flight of <4 hours is to get from A to B for the cheapest price possible so getting business would be completely against that.

        • It can sometimes be worth spending points on a Y->J classic upgrade if you're already paying for a higher fare class - I spent 5,000 points upgrading a flex economy SYD->CBR ticket and I don't regret it, but it helped that (a) this was a work trip, and the only reason I had a flex economy ticket was because it was all I could get, and (b) I was travelling with a colleague, so both of us got access to the Qantas Club and thus a decent dinner.

  • Perfect. Didn't quite have 16,000 points and needed to book CBR to Syd return for my wife's connecting flights from NZ..

  • Does anyone know if jetstar flies to south East Asia? I'm trying to get Singapore in December, but if I can go via some other place cheap I'll do it lol

    • Jetstar Asia fly all through the region based out of Singapore (I think, may be Bangkok). Not sure if flights with them would be covered by this sale.

    • For Singapore they fly direct from PER/DRW/MEL. Should be possible to connect to one of those flights if you're based elsewhere, just makes sure domestic connection is also Jetstar, otherwise they'll add the cost of the Qantas leg separately.

  • Anyone know what the process is if you were to cancel and existing points booking and rebook it? Do you lose the taxes paid on the original booking?

    • +1

Easy to do online. Costs 3,500 points to change or 5,000 points to cancel a booking and they'll refund taxes/fees. Up to 24 hours before departure.

      • I tried changing and the points of the new flight are unchanged (ie. no discount applied). They might have imposed a rule such that you won't get any points difference back.

Edit: what I meant was the only option seems to be cancelling and rebooking

        • Be careful if you go the cancel/rebook option as from my experience when i've cancelled a points booking with the intention of then rebooking its taken weeks after the cancellation to be credited back the points, if this happens it will mean you will miss out on the promotion cut of date of 27th August

        • +1

@sloba: thanks for the warning. Fortunately though I have enough points to make a new booking. Did the tax refund take long too?

        • @macadamia:

that works then, It was about a year ago since I had to cancel a reward booking , but I think the refund to my credit card for the taxes was actually really quick (within a few days), it was just the points refund that took weeks.

        • +1

@sloba: I cancelled a reward booking yesterday. Points refunded same day and ccard fees took 2 days.

        • @sloba: thanks! :D

        • @The Champagne Mile:
Nice! wish when I did it that it was that quick, maybe they have improved on the process or I was just unlucky in the past.

      • I have no idea how Qantas points work. I presume points required to fly go up and down like normal ticket prices? If not, if I book today for June next year and change the dates of flights in January next year for August next year, provided there is a redemption flight available on the dates I want, do I only pay those above fees?

        • +1

Reward seats generally have fixed points - except from time to time promo like this comes up.

  • redeem flight from BNE to SYD for 4 last week for DEC trip and lost 6,400pts :( but happy that i put off redeeming an international flight till today (thanks OP), and save 44,800pts, net saving = 38400 pts, still happy :)

  • +2

Hmm looked at booking some different flights but feel like it's still cheaper to fly TigerAir and cash in the points for gift cards or something.

    • +5

Or price match with Jetstar, even better then.

  • Where are you seeing Syd -> HK for 28k points?

    • My bad - I was ticking the "view in points" box on the results page, not the "search classic rewards" on the selection page… All good now. Great deal

  • Makes me wish I waited a few more weeks to book my Japan flights, oh well!

  • I'm confused about T&C's:

If a Trip includes a Transfer (a flight within 24 hours) from or to the international Qantas or Jetstar gateway or a Transfer (domestic same day or international within 24 hours) between Qantas and Jetstar, that Trip is not eligible for this offer. For example, if an itinerary included an eligible Classic Flight Reward flight between Sydney and London Heathrow with a Transfer flight to Brussels, this Trip would not be eligible to receive the discount

Can someone please clarify? Does this mean flights with transfers/stopovers don't apply?

    • Yep didn't really get my head around this either. Transfers are definitely ok - I booked MEL-SYD-CBR earlier today. Stopovers (>24hrs) have never been possible without paying for both segments separately.

  • +2

Yep, just received an email from Qantas about this. Apparently its to celebrate their record earnings in their financials which they just released… #wepaytoomuchforflights

Email reads as follows in case anyone is interested:

Qantas today announced a record full year financial result. We couldn't have achieved this without our loyal members, so thank you for your support.

Our financial performance puts us in a strong position to keep investing in our product and service, and rewarding your loyalty. Some of the initiatives we announced today are:

Designing the Dreamliner experience: Qantas is working with a team of world-class designers and sleep experts to design the 787-9 Dreamliner interiors in Economy, Premium Economy and Business to best-in-class standards. We'll be announcing more detail soon.

First flights on sale: The first Qantas Dreamliner flights will be on sale by Christmas this year, ahead of this aircraft entering service in late 2017. We'll be unveiling parts of the Dreamliner network soon.

Expanding Wi-Fi: We're in the final stages of scoping options to ultimately extend Wi-Fi to our QantasLink and Qantas International fleets. We want to deliver a better service level than what's commonly available, so we're investing the time to deliver a product you will really enjoy.

Domestic Wi-Fi rollout: We're prioritising the rollout of fast, free Wi-Fi to Qantas Domestic, which starts with a trial on a single aircraft at the end of this year and will feature on our B737 and A330 fleet from early 2017. To demonstrate its potential, Qantas is exploring a partnership with Cricket Australia to live-stream cricket over summer 2016-17 on the aircraft involved in the Wi-Fi technology trial.

Watch this space over the coming weeks and months for more exciting announcements. As a sign of our appreciation we're also pleased to offer 20% off the Qantas Points required for eligible Qantas and Jetstar Classic Flight Rewards* booked from today until 27 August 2016. See below for details.

Thank you again for your loyalty.

    • Yeah, the age just put a front page article about them scoring 1bil profit and worker get 3k bonus, damn.

  • Does anyone have a rough idea of what flights from MEL-LAX usually costs, either from a points redemption perspective or a sale fare?
Looked it up just now and it says 72,000 points + $390 taxes etc per person (return). Just wondering if this is a good price? Travelling in May 2017

    • +1

regular point cost is 90k points. I dont think its the best use of points as there is regular sub $900 fares to LAX

  • +5

    Dammit… I booked last week… :(

    • Wanna book one for me?

  • Once booked, can these points economy redemptions be upgraded to business using points?

    • Based on previous experience, economy FF bookings don't qualify for points based upgrades. However, you could cancel with 5000 points per traveller booking penalty and rebook in Business with the 20% discount.

      • How do you book Business with 20% discount?

        • 'As a sign of our appreciation we're also pleased to offer 20% off the Qantas Points required for eligible Qantas and Jetstar Classic Flight Rewards* booked from today until 27 August 2016. ' Doesn't say anything about being restricted to Economy and Classic Flight Rewards includes all classes* (*'subject to availability')

        • +1

To receive the 20% discount, all flights in your Trip must be eligible Classic Flight Rewards which are Economy Classic Flight Rewards operated by Qantas or Jetsblah blah blah…

        • @muncan: Where did you cut that quote from?? Mine came directly from an email from QFF to me as a member and it DEFINITELY doesn't contain that text or that restriction .. "-( .. !!
Edit: Hold the phone, its in the fine print. Economy only. Good ol' Qantas, offer a deal then f*** it up a usual!!

      • They have changed the rule such that we can request upgrade on reward ticket. The points required are higher though compared to paid tickets.

  • +1

thanks booking some domestic flights - i can't see a sale happening for this period.

  • I had the same exp too

  • Does anyone know why the taxes for SYD to BKK return is $290 but for BKK to SYD return is $480?

    • At a guess the ridiculously high airport charges in Sydney could be a major factor in the difference (thank Macquarie Bank for that little touch up).

      • There's a $55 passenger movement charge levied by the Australian government for any international departure at any airport

  • Just got this in an email too. Pretty nice offer. Doesn't seem to be near as good for international flights, which you would be paying full price/using full points. But really quite good for Jetstar domestic flights, especially during peak periods.

  • Hi guys, I'd love a bit of help if possible ~ new to this whole redeeming flights thing (usually sell the points).

How can I see the 2% reduction or is it included already? Looking at flights MNL - SYD (and/or vice versa). Showing as 22400 points each way (is that the reduced cost?).

Also - the taxes seem to make very little logical sense - as pointed out above in the BKK example. With these flights is there any benefit in keeping a return set as a single booking or makes no real difference (2 one way flights)?

Any other tips regarding QF to MNL would be appreciated!

    Thanks

    • +1

20% discount included already as long as you have selected eligible flights.

      • +2

on the page you select the flight times/seats at the bottom it will show this in the summary:

        Includes promotion discount
        Reward Type: Classic Reward

  • Thanks!

From your experience are the taxes usually different depending the direction of travel (on return trips)?

Is there any benefit to keep my booking as a return pair or is 2 separate bookings the same (like LCC where 2 separate usually is cheaper)?

  • aw man booked the flight last week

  • I'm sad. Barely any seats around the dates I'm looking at :(

(to be expected - Xmas time)

  • Is it 20% off the points requirement only or does the 20% also apply to the taxes they'd usually charge?

  • I need to buy 4 tickets for my family, but can only afford 2 with this. Does anyone have any idea how to get 4 on the same booking, with half paid via classic rewards flights, and the other 2 paid via normal ticketing?

    • I would probably suggest giving them a call.

  • Thanks everyone. I learn so much from Ozb!! xxx

    • No worries, can I have a peck on the cheek?

  • What are the costs involved in changing a reward flight in the worst case scenario? (thinking about booking for mid next year)

  • ughhh use 18k points + $79 tax or just pay $299 on jetstar…choices choices

    • 18k points + $79 tax

  • Thank you for saving me so many points!
