  • Any value on the SIM?

    • Assume it's a blank SIM waiting to replace your current one..

  • From where it said free mobile phone? And what model?

I wonder if they just look to see if the SMS was received on 2G or they match the IMEI to a model. I have a 2G/3G candy bar phone I could restrict to 2G.

Edit: :( can't test. My old Telstra SIM expired. > 6 months.

    • Must be the IMEI as I have a Moto G3 with the 2nd sim on 2g and I never got the sms.

      • +1

At work I receive the list of our remaining corporate 2G services. The list details the IMEI last registered and also the make and model of the handset. The list advises whether each service requires a new SIM and device, new device only, new SIM only or device setting change only. A Moto G3 with a non-2G sim operating on 2G will only require a settings change so you are very unlikely to receive this offer.

    • Telstra are using IMEIs for their 2g migration list.

      • Well I'm testing with an old Nokia 3120, that really is a 2G-only device, with an IMEI to match, and after nearly a day I haven't gotten the SMS. So there must be some other criteria in play, as well as IMEI matching.

  • i put in my old dead optus number, lets see if the sim comes.

FREE 3G Mobile Phone + SIM Card for Telstra 2G Customers [Targeted?]

      probably not :)

  • +1

Targeted, and you get a Telstra Cruise, a sim card, and a $29 voucher!!!!!!!! (for instore phone setup and what not aka worthless)

    • nice, thanks - $29 voucher that can be spent on anything?

      • It's just for setting up the phone, something they value it at 29 bucks. It's useless unless someone know of some tricks…..

        • Cheaper then toilet paper and just as useful I guess?

      • It's a platinum Tech bar voucher. For use in transfering contacts, pictures across.

    • +1

Wow - that was a phone on sale @ $9 with 5Gb data last year:

  • This will work well for all those than run eg an alarm system that reports through the 2G GSM network. Not.

    • Do they even have alarm systems which work on 3G or 4G yet?

    • +1

Sure. But don't blame telstra for the equipment industrys and users shortcomings. There was plenty of warning this was happening. Even without warning, common sense should have prevailed that 2g would become extinct. Why should telstra (and therefore its users) foot the bill for legacy hardware?

Or perhaps it would be in society's better interest not to roll out 3g, 4g, 4gx.. Let's just stop developing all technology so we can better serve the minority.

  • so will this work if i use my dual sim phone (telstra sim for data/googleplay) and (aldi for phone/sms) as long as the telstra is read as 2nd sim, therefore 2G ?

    • I don't think so, I've got voda on sim1 which is 4/3G and telstra on 2nd sim which is 2G only, it's been set up like this for a while, never received this offer.

  • I got an Alcatel pixie late last week. Worth 15$ on eBay I guess.

  • +1

To stay connected by upgrading to our 3G network, you, or your authourised rep should complete the details

Seems legit. How did Telstra even let this person write their website?

    • +1

They forgot to turn on Predictive Text

    • +3

"Social Media Managers" these days are all recently turned 18, with their qualifications gained by using Facebook since they were 12..

They all have probably never heard of the word "representative".

      • They plan to be Vice President within two years or they will complain to the Sydney Morning Herald that young people are discriminated against.

      • And they write addicting instead of addictive.

I've tried inserting multiple old Telstra SIMs (one with expired credit, one with current credit, and expired ones from years ago) into an old Nokia (same 3120 model as the OP), and no SMS received.

However they have all previously been used on a 3G/4G handset, and were registered to my Telstra account (which has a 4G handset). So I'm wondering if it's a requirement that:
    a) the SIM was never used on a 3G or 4G handset.
    and/or:
    b) Not linked to an account which had ever used a 3G or 4G handset.

Or maybe I just need to leave a SIM inserted for a day, and see if these messages are only sent out every so often?

    • +1

Too much mucking around for a cheapie phone

      • Hey! It's free, and it's on OzBargain!

    • It will be defined by the SIM, not by the phone. If you have one of the old pre "Next G" SIMs it will probably trip the deal. They're probably targeting a particular range of SIM serials or ones that register to a certain system.

    • my mutli-fit sim was first used in a 3g handset, then when the starter credit expired but with the number still active, put into the 3120

      • Weird, that's exactly the same SIM scenario + 2G handset as me, but no SMS from Telstra, even after nearly a day. I'll leave it for a week (since that's how long the battery life is on these old handsets anyway), and see if anything happens.

        • sorry, forgot to add that i only switched on the mobile a few days ago and received the sms immediately - it had been off for months

  • What free phone? :) not a bad deal for people with old shit laying around

  • removing an active telstra sim from the current mobile and inserting it into an old 2G mobile will be sufficient ?

    • Nope, need an old 2G SIM.

      • +1

        mine was a multi-fit sim :)

        • I tried to put into my old Sony Ericsson k750i 2G phone but didn't receive any sms : (

[looks in drawer] … what would I do with another Telstra Cruise?

  • +1

if the phone is anything like the tempo i wouldn't even bother

  • wonder if forcing GSM mode on a smartphone will be enough??
    will try later

    • See above where a comment said the migration list is based on IMEI - eg, dropping to 2G won't work.

      • Is the upgrade only offered to phones that Telstra originally sold?

        • iirc my 3120 was an unlocked optus :)

        • @tonester: Telstra are likely only using the first digits which identify manufacturer and model. As Telstra likewise sold the Nokia 3120 I think this is why it would have triggered.

        • @kipps: I tried with a Nokia 6300 that came from Vodafone and have yet to receive the offer. I'm not sure if Telstra sold this model themselves back in the day.

        • @JIMB0: I can confirm that Telstra didn't sell the Nokia 6300 at the time.

  • I have 2G on my dial SIM and I got this text on June 16.

"Hi. On 1 Dec our 2G network is closing. For continued service set your device Carrier Settings to 'Auto' to access 3G. See telstra.com/2ghelp or call 1800718650"

Nothing about a phone sadly but ill try apply for it still.

    • I tried it too, but I all I got was the $29 techbar voucher and some sheets of papers with instructions to set carrier settings to Auto.

      • that's what I got too :(

  • has anyone actually gotten a phone or received sms confirmation of order?

  • +1

I just got mine today. I received an Alcatel One-Touch Pixi 3. Pretty good!

    • nice :)

i've received a dispatch confirmation sms but my number doesn't seem to be in the startrack system yet

      • Yeah, it takes a while to register on the tracker. If you got the confirmation SMS, then you'll get the delivery tomorrow (or next business day).

        • received telstra cruise - wish it had been a pixi :(

wonder if it's cruise for vic, pixi for wa?

    • pics or it didn't happen please :) I wonder how they determine what phone you get, whether it's the Alcatel or Telstra brand phone?

      • +3

It's a Telstra branded (and I presume Telstra locked) Alcatel phone.

        • If it can handle basic apps, it could prove to be a useful temporary backup phone. For free :)

  • So has anyone tried to get it without the sms coming through, my grandfather needs a new phone currently using my old 3210 which I gave him years back otherwise I might have to give him one of my old smartphones with Senior software installed.

    • I registered 2 numbers that I have used on the 2G network without receiving an sms. Received an sms to confirm address. Spoke to a nice girl from Telstra overseas call centre, confirmed my address and she said phone has been ordered and will be sent in under 10 business days. Give it a try.

      • nice :)

        • Ok, ours came as a SIM card, it is really not going to help with a 3120, time to jump ship I think.

  • +1

i only got a gift card for plat tech which is useless to me. no phone in the star track bag just a letter telling me to change from 2g settings to 3/4g. i guess they must of known i had a multi fit sim card activated using a smart phone a couple of months ago and stuck it in a 2g phone to get the sms for this offer?

  • Anyone been told by Telstra that they are only sending out new SIM cards? They told me they are not sending out phones.

  • All I got was the $29 gift card unfortunately. My dual SIM is 2G and I used that. Been active for over a year.

  • Mine came, to the wrong address. Telstra were supposed to call back on Friday to setup phone, they didn't. And to top it off they sent 2 useless setup cards. Not sure what type of phone was sent as I gave it to a friend who had one of my 2G phones.

  • What a w#nk!

    Received a 'Telstra Cruise T126' [RRP: $29 (cost to make … $3.99)]

    https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/tel…

As a long time loyal customer, they could have at least sent a 'Telstra 4GX Smart' [RRP: $69]

    https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/tel…

… would help use more of their 4GX data !!

  • Haha, got the banner 2GEXIT 1DEC on my old candy bar phone when I powered it up with an expired Woolies SIM. Nothing to do with the self-immolation of GB. Fortunately that phone also does 3G.

  • Came across this post on Friday. I was getting all this annoying messages on my 2G mobile so decided to search ozbargain. Glad I did. Filled in the form and got my Telstra care pack today (Wednesday).

    • What phone did Telstra send ?

      • Cruise

  • Just started using my motorola c650 2G phone. Tried a unused Telstra sim. and a unregisted Telstra 2g sim. Ha-vent gotten any messages yet. I guess my spare phone will be paper weight in a few days
