What bothers you most about OzBargain?

Interested to see what your biggest gripe is with OzBargain.

For me it is their insanely stupid referral rule that allows a deal submitter to put their referral link in the OP instead of forcing everyone to go through the Random referral system, which would make it fairer for everyone. Not only that having one person get all referrals often makes companies suspicious and in the past led to ing direct blocking ozbargain referrals because clearly OP made bank.

Just because someone is 5 minutes to submit than you, it could result in them making thousands from them getting to have their link in OP potentially forever, if it's a long running deal.

It is a bit annoying when somebody asks a question, leaving out critical info, then never posts a follow up.

    • Rude people
    • Obvious referral profiteering
    • People liking/buying from a deal but too lazy to click + button
    • People who never post deals but run down others
    • The fact that the site is super addictive and I spend way too much time on it
  • +5

Nothing bothers me about Ozbargain. Apart from deals, I have my dosage of daily laughs in the forum with those first world problems.

That is because I don't care about neg votes or rude people in the online world. I have enough to deal with in real life.

Time I spent on this site while working.

  • it bothers me how bargains that are simply not bargains being posted and up voted eg government entitlements to a select few. how is receiving a rebate on electricity a bargain because your a pensioner or low income earner receiving family tax benefit. makes no sense to me. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/160597

    • There are deals and competitions on the sidebar. perhaps a third category is needed?

      • I vote that it doesn't get called Entitlements, though it kind of fits. Too many people will think it's a category just for them and will complain on each post that they're not eligible for.

        • I vote that it doesn't get called Entitlements, though it kind of fits.

how about "the benefits of living in Australia"

and will complain on each post that they're not eligible for.

Why am I not entitled to free pap smears AND prostrate examinations?!?!?

Comments getting downvoted for no apparent reason. Racist? Clearly wrong? Self righteous dick? Ok. Someone having an actual bad experience with an app or deal? Someone who found a better deal elsewhere or pointing out why something is not a deal? Getting downvoted for that seems petty.

People finding the bargains and buying them before I do.

    Irresistible bargains.

I've got 6 Gaming mouses now, 4 still unboxed.
A brand new power supply 750w PSU collecting dust.
    4 New phones in 6 months~. Gionee, S5, G4, now S7. Wtf?
    100s un-touched $5 clothing from Target.

List goes on, but for now. That's all I can think of.

    • +14

One of the main things that OzBargain taught me is the value of saying "no". The largest saving is for a deal that you never buy and didn't need.

Now I ask myself before buying: Do I really need this, or do I really have a non-transient preexisting genuine want for this thing? In a year's time, will I be happy with this purchase, or would I rather have the money it cost back? And if it's a replacement, did I use the old one, and is the old one really broken/knackered/beyond its useful life? And if it's a not a replacement: Will I really use it, or will it be landfill? And if I'm not happy with the answers to those questions, I don't buy it.

When in doubt, remember: there will always be another deal later on, and there will always be a newer better shinier model just around the corner, and material possessions cannot buy happiness.

And even with all of the above: sometimes you just won't know whether something is a good deal or not for you, until a year or so later, when you can look back and evaluate how much use & value you got out of something, versus how much it cost. Some of the purchases I was unsure about turned out to be great and fantastic value (especially if they were < $50), and some I thought I would use but never did and felt regret over (especially if they were > $100). I.e. do your best, but then don't be too hard on yourself!

    • Yep, I've got 6 of those $1 "gaming" mice. Also have 3 unopened MS keyboard&mice sets from that $2(with rebate) deal from 2 Yeats ago. WTF. Though I have learnt to say no to many things.

Except travel. This year I've been to Melbourne twice, Hawaii, Japan. Will be going to Darwin in Oct. Booked cairns in Feb. I justify it by saying "travel broadens the mind" but it empties the wallet. I would have booked more trips but the kids can't miss too much school and I sort of have to turn up to work.

      • +4

I think I share this sentiment too.
The confluence of deep discount airlines plus OzBargain to sniff out the best deals makes my kids stunningly well travelled compared to a generation ago.
My first overseas trip was my honeymoon and the off peak return London flights were a good price at $2400. That same amount of money has bought return flights to Japan, Vietnam, Bali, Singapore, Fiji and Thailand with change left over. It is a great time to be a keen tourist.

    • Ozb needs a way to share recent spoils with each other. E.g. I'll trade you some eneloops for a gaming mouse or the like. Money is not saved when you buy things you don't need.

I really don't like the "free samples" posts, many of which are offered by businesses in good faith for genuine prospective customers - not to be raided by those who may not even want the product on offer, but just want the "ooh free!" item.

    • +3

I don't mind free samples, but only respond to the ones I genuinely would use.

  • People with weird usernames that no one seems to be able to remember when writing it back…

  • +2

That they have to have the last word of the argument. Also so many users here could learn a thing or two from reading Sun Tz's 'The Art of War' instead of arguing to the bitter end.

  • +2

Falsely accusing others of neg voting, first world problem!

  • +5

People seemingly mindlessly upvoting deals which haven't been confirmed or where the bargains are yet to be determined. The ebay sales in particular are the worst for this. This also applies after the fact - at times there are hundreds of votes yet everyone is keeping it a secret as to what they bought? I'm not saying it has to be 1:1 or even 1:3 but sometimes the hitrate on positive votes to comment feedback ratio is abysmal. I feel the community can do better - and I base that comment on how awesome the community is at other times.

I also gotta say the tired/forced jokes. This isn't Reddit, although I do love Reddit. I don't know how funny "phone is fine" was the first time but you've got to be pretty simple minded if you still think its funny at this point or the many other times its been said in the last several months. That said I myself have attempted to be funny in comments to some success and some failure in the past. It's just the persistant and uninspired nature of it from some posters and across some deal threads because there was a funny word in the title or something else so basic it makes you start to question the average age of the community here or what exactly they get out of this site.

    • +4

I got a lot out of your mum last night

      • Yes, well illustrated veritas_mendax. Case in point.

      • That went over his head, cheeky mendax. haha!

    • i agree with the mindless upvoting of deals, especially when the deal is pretty shit anyway. phone is fine was never funny, but i'm sure some of my dumb jokes are the reason this website is so popular.

    • I understand your view, but there is also benefit in getting exposure to potential deals, so the group benefits of thousands of eyes looking at it helps distill where the value lies.
So I do tend to up vote a 20% off ebay deal, even before I make a purchase, because it's presence well exposed on the front page spurs many people to hunt for bargains, that they then often post as new deals or as comments.

As to the second half of your post, I just say we are "professionals" because our humour doesn't need to come from Reddit.

    • People always complain about the eBay deals because they're posted before going live. No one seems to recall that 95% of the time they turn out to be confirmed and there's always bargains to be had. It's not like they're clogging your feed either so there really is no basis for your gripe.

When an Apple deal gets posted and you have a bunch of elitists coming in telling you you're an idiot for buying it and talking down to you if you don't use Android. No thanks, I've done my research, I know what I want. Comment on the deal, not the customer.

    • +3

I agree. Sick of the "sheep" argument when there are far more Androids circulating around. Makes little sense to me.

    • +2

As an Android user I can honestly say I am very jealous of how long Apple products get updates…

Exactly. Plus our permission system, option for smaller phones, backup system, Reachability, Handoff, iMessage, Continuity, 3D Touch, Apple Watch…

      • +4

You guys are harsh. In 4 years of membership and pretty frequent commenting I have never hit the daily limit.
I use my negs like a sub captain handles torpedos. When I launch one it is a well considered event, that will hopefully sink the target.

  • +2

Not enough bargains for stuff I actually want/need.

    • Post moar.

  • Long-time lurker. This thread inspired me to finally sign up.

I often read the comments (mostly on deals, but I also look at threads in the discussion forum at times). I personally don't understand the concept of "voting" for comments at all. What's the point of "negging" people? If you don't like what somebody says, who cares?

    • Well if enough people neg a person's comment then it becomes invisible. It's a way of group censorship. Of course, even if the comment is made invisible you can still read it if you want to.

      • +1

Which is sometimes useful if the comment is misleading, for example.

    • Welcome aboard. In deal threads, voting can snuff out inaccurate or problem comments (e.g. on a mobile deal where people are mixing up plans).
And plus votes have a shorthand effect to show you benefits, like when somebody reminds about Cashrewards or a current AMEX deal for the vendor.

In discussion threads it is more about opinions, but in deal threads voting often provides very pertinent feedback.

  • I don't like when bargains are geographically specific, especially if they are on the other side of .au from me ..

  • I feel like this thread is in my honour after the recent RateSetter deal. The great thing about OzBargain is you can hide stores if they are of no interest to you.

  • +7

Another member used to post up the eBay % sales 1 minute before they started too which benefited their company immensely.

Reps often post very good deals.

What bothered me is the amount of kids and close minded people here who keep reporting stupid stuff(Lets not talk about the snitch who will go and inform retailers about price errorHINT:Jeanswest gift card), my old username was MILF Hunter and someone reported me for that name. Long story short, my username was change to Guest and i can't get my old username so have to create new one.

    • Lets not talk about the snitch who will go and inform retailers about price errorHINT:Jeanswest gift card

Whilst there may be those people that call to double check, and the company finds out, you're assuming they wouldn't already have found out by checking invoices.

      • +1

If they found out then you may get full refund and free $10 gift card :) Just like whats happen with every JB Hifi price error. Also, price error can pass through very easily if the price is not extremely low just like whats happened with Harvey Norman Logitech steering wheels couple months ago or you may even be able to price match with other retailers.

I am very pleased to be a member of a site that takes these things seriously. That said, I often am robust in my discussions with others.
So far, it has been a good balance where disagreements have been allowed to play out, yet I gather cases of actual directed nastiness have been stopped.
To OzBargain members credit, I think I have called people fools, cretins, gooses, simpletons and idiots without anybody taking mortal offence.
Savas, you can pick which of those epithets I direct your way.

      • Does this include one specific member who negs my every post and often makes comments about things about myself that fall outside this website (often moving into the forays of personal life)

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/8421/comments

But no mods ever do anything about it, but must be that protected species list coming into play again.

        • It's best you start a Talk with a Moderator thread so you can give us the details.

        • @neil: Yeah im not going to trawl through hundreds of posts to find them again, i do remember reporting some and nothing ever came out of it, so i didnt bother from then on.

        • @MATTDAMON:

Your last report was actioned and was dealt with. The public forum is not the appropriate place to discuss further so I ask you start a private Talk with a Moderator thread where we have the tools to search and assist with your queries.

        • -1

Not sure what your objection is, most of your posts get high ratings. The only ones of your posts that have any negs attached are from years ago and other users than the one you linked to.
Are you saying Reality causes you a problem? If so, what is it? If they are being uncool I suspect the mods will have input.
If somebody doesn't like your deals, I'm not sure that is bullying.

        • @mskeggs:

High ratings? I'm averaging a -3.8 vote tally

Great deals being posted - but because of the time difference between W.A. & A.E.S.T. - it means we lose out very often as they have either expired, or the limits have already been reached.
Number 2 big gripe is this " Price Hipster " guy who is forever posting the fact of his intentions to bring the best prices etc. & always seems to have his comments in our comments replied page. Do not think his site is worth it & totally fed up with receiving more from him - don't know how to stop it.

  • +1

The way it constantly introduces me to things I didn't know that I wanted.

On a slightly more serious note, it does kind of annoy when I see people comment on how they buy crazy large quantities of bargains. It makes sense to buy some things in bulk (ie consumables), but it's crazy seeing people comment "thx OP, bought 5" on, for example, a toaster deal. Just buy one, and leave more for everyone else.

  • +8

    As a retailer

    • People who buy or say "this deal is great" and dont leave a vote
    • 90% I can usually spot an ozbargainer, literally, the second they walk in the store. What gives them away is their body language, they walk in looking guilty …dunno why.
    • Biggest whingers and complainers.
    • Threats of taking things further because they missed out on a deal.
    • Idiots who click and buy without researching first, causing others to miss out on the deal and then demanding a refund because they did not do their research.

many more … just cant think of it right now.

Please note - that most ozbargainers I am sure are normal people but this is just what bothers me about Ozb
