Usually people doing reviews aren't very good with comput0rs. I'll update you when I upgrade mine with my leet hax0r skills and tell you how sweet it is. I think it'll make a good pen testing machine

    • +1

pretty fast and capable with the cpu/ram, the SSD is the winner for me. I was almost about to buy another laptop with 500GB Hard drive. The hard disk space wasn't important for me, only the benefits of SSD (google for full benefits)

      reading one of them:
This computer will not read or write to my USB2 floppy drive. it wont s(4) four other computers in the house.. I bough this unit to use when on trips. and I like to keep personal info of the internet and out of the cloud.

      usb 2 floppy? yeah right!~

      • Chuckle, yes, but there were certainly many (on the few pages I read) that did seem a little better informed. Of course these may not have been for the ssd model. Pity the comments weren't segregated. Zechem seems pleased with his, which I trust, tho' I'm now tending toward a secondhand latitude with i5. Decisions……..

        • that latitude is 11" if not then you are not comparing apple with apple…
11 and 14 in screen is big difference.

        • @eisniwre: fair comment. Wasn't actually considering size, more speed and functions. Size not really that important (she says!)

        • @Hen: i did write screen… :) in other context maybe. im still undecided as well

      • Floppy was under utilised during USB 1 times! USB unlocked the true power of floppy

    • Have a couple of similar set ups with 4GB ram and ssd and for everyday basic use is fairly snappy, even browsing the web in Chrome with multiple tabs open.

Will slow down multitasking a bit, but then again so would a lot of the previous gen i3U low voltage CPU's found in more expensive models.

Just don't expect top gaming and graphics on this or most other under $600 laptops. Great little travel/coffee table unit.

      • Thanks ozhunter, appreciate your feedback. No gaming required. So hard to choose b/n this or secondhand older but better specced….and with only very basic knowledge. Arrrggghhhh!

If your happy with the small screen and form factor ( as well as the choice of colours :-), just go for this as it's a great price for a new laptop with decent Pentium Quad Core/4GB RAM and SSD all in one without need to spend extra. Second hand might have issues soon.

Unless you get refurbished or second hand, this is the best deal for the last few months for this type of W10 machine with AU new warranty.

I think the $100 ends today, although the 20% runs longer.

        • @ozhunter68:

Looks like the original deal is still on.

Have just ordered one for my daughter to use. Couldnt say I looked the red colour, so ordered white, as the blue was out of stock.

Anyone any experience with reformatting out of the box and going with a clean install of Windows 10? I will of course take an image backup of the SSD before I do so.

    • +1

want to know this as well. probably need to extract the serial number so we can use clean ISO windows installation downloaded from MS website and then activate?
dont want to have dell bloatwares

      • +2

I just want as much usable space on the SSD as possible. She likes to watch TV and movies in places that dont have good internet connections

        • I got one of these - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/251274 - seemed the easiest upgrade to me. :-)

        • +1

@JH100: good but it takes one usb port.
anyway, doesnt answer ocean and my question.
what if i want to upgrade the ssd to a bigger one but dont want to clone the existing window os because it has too much bloatwares. possible?

        • +1

          @eisniwre:

It's cheap and easy usable space as per ocean's requirement, and portable.

Can't answer yours but I'm keeping an eye out for it.

        • +2

Or if its extra space just for movies, you could get one of the 64-128gb sdcard deals, and then you wont use up a usb port.

This would be perfect for basic uni stuff, right? Pretty much just need it for word processing, viewing some pdfs, Spotify and Chrome (3-4 tabs). Would it handle all of that once without any issues?

    • +1

Should handle that easily and a lot more. The main consideration is if your eyes are good to read small fonts on a smallish screen.

      • +1

        "if your eyes are good"

If they're not, glasses are a good upgrade. For reading BigW do decent ones for $10.

        • True, ok for some. My eyes are just still ok for 14" or bigger without needing glasses ( not too proud to wear but too annoying ).

Can always enlarge font with software clicks, but more steps to just read/surf net.

After going through some reviews it appears that Dell had to cut some corners in order to provide all the specs on such a small price range. The biggest hit was the display, with most reviewers complaining about poor viewing angles and low brightness.

I haven't tested it yet though. Just mentioning it if in case that helps you make up your mind.

  • Does this come with Microsoft word pre installed?

    • I havent received it yet, but…

      It wont.

Windows 10 Home will come with a 30 day trial of Office 365, which includes Word.

  • I just ordered a red Inspiron 11 from Dell's eBay store. Seems like a really good deal for that price.

Did anyone try running Linux on this? Any initial hardware compatibility issues e.g. Wireless, trackpad, IO?

  • +2

Just thought I'd pop back in and say if you are after a sleeve case for this I purchased one from here http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/371309390500. Received it this week and the Dell fits like a glove and the pockets fit a wireless mouse and the charging cable

  • Received my laptop today, but when I looked under system -> about, it says Processor: Intel (R) Pentium (R) CPU N3710 @ 1.60 GHz, this doesn't seem right…I thought it should be Processor: Intel® Pentium ® Processor N3710 2.56ghz?

Edit: Just saw that Processor Base Frequency 1.60 GHz, Burst Frequency 2.56 GHz

    • Just curious, what are your thoughts on the laptop so far?

  • Is the battery changeable?
In case the battery die, I can buy off market battery to replace it

  • +1

I've only had it for half a day and have been doing some windows updates and installing a few programs. It is very lightweight and portable, 11" screen is relatively smaller compared to my current computer screen so that'll take some adjusting to, other than that, so far so good.

Edit: meant to be a reply to hotdog85

    • Awesome to hear! Thanks for the reply.

    • Just wondering if you bothered getting extended warranty with Dell for this? My previous laptop was a XPS 13 and it gave up just over 2 years. I only had the standard 1yr warranty unfortunately.

  • Can anyone comment on this laptop's suitability for running Visual Studio with ReSharper? I've read that 4-8GB RAM, 64bit and SSD are all essential for this, so seems like it's suitable. Other than that it's just the smaller screen that worries me.

  • Has anyone bothered getting extra warranty from Dell for this? You can get 2 years premium support (where they come to your place) for $78. You have to send the laptop away with the standard 1yr warranty that comes with it.

  • straight up is this notebook good for student use? is the ssd boot up time fast? from sleep and startup?

is it fine if i have music running in the background from youtube and type away on microsoft word, thats something really important that i need to know

also is the battery life good? what about the keyboard, is it squishy or or nice to type on? thats also important, is the keyboard tactical?

  • Hey guys, can anyone point me at how best to streamline this thing, speed it up? I have two other (much) older computers in the house, desktops, and they are much faster 'online' than this laptop. Biggest difference is this is on wifi while other 2 are wired. Both are running hard drives while the laptop is SSD, which I thought would be faster out of the box.

I have deleted some stuff it came with (MS and Dell) but I don't really know what I'm doing there so am leaving much alone. Is there a list anywhere of what to keep and what to delete? Help would be much appreciated.

    • If its only online may be wifi being whats slowing it down try running ad block if you are using chrome to disable the ads loading which will speed up your browser

      • Thanks. I use adblock on firefox. It's just that I sometimes read about getting rid of bloatware making the computer faster, I thought there might be some guide to that.
